We welcomed back Dr. Alan Stern for the first hour of this two hour program. Dr. Stern first talked about his new company, Golden Spike, then he told us about the upcoming NSRC 2013 Conference. Please visit these websites for more information: http://goldenspikecompany.com; http://nsrc.swri.org. Dr. Stern started by telling us about the Golden Spike company plan, goals, objectives, and time tables. He talked about the technology, their business plan, pricing, who may want to buy the two seats to go to the Moon for $1.5 billion and what they might do on the Moon though that is the choice of the customer. He talked about the number of launches needed based the specific launch vehicle to be used. We also talked about the lunar lander, challenges to the mission, and the company financial needs. Return payload requirements were mentioned which are 50 kilos at this time. Questions were asked about EVAs and spacesuits, capsule life support, radiation, etc. Dr. Stern also received questions pertaining to the future plans for Golden Spike and potential mission expansion plans. As we approached the end of the first segment of the two hour program, we talked about the upcoming NSRC 2013 conference to be held from June 3-5 in Broomfield, CO. Alan went through the logistics, keynote speakers & he talked about the potential impact of sequestration on the conference. During our hour with Dr. Stern, he also talked about two Indiegogo programs underway. The first campaign Alan talked about re $1 for each mile to the Moon can be found at http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/golden-spike-is-sending-nations-and-people-to-the-moon-join-in. Later, Alan talked about naming the closest exoplanet via Indiegogo. Check it out at www.uwingu.com.
In our second segment, we went to Open Lines. I talked about the recent set of astronaut panels at Rocky Mountain College and when they might be archived on Space Show websites. I also went over the coming Space Show schedule. Doug called to talk about sequestration and he had Space X, Falcon Heavy and reusable questions per our discussion with Dr. Stern. Later, John from Atlanta called re Golden Spike, Inspiration Mars, and the NASA budget. He also talked about the continuing resolution (CR) and did not think there would be much blowback on Congress or NASA budget and spending issues. In our sequestration comments, we talked about the FAA closure of some controlled airports and the political use of the sequestration.

Space Show programs can be quoted, but the quote must be cited or referenced using the proper citation format. Contact The Space Show for further information. We welcomed Dr. Alan Stern back to the program to further discuss Uwingu and their first product which is focused on planet naming and voting opportunities. Please see the Uwingu website for more details, www.uwingu.com. During this one hour program, Dr. Stern explained the Uwingu concept and the first product, the opportunity to suggest names for planets and to vote on them. The goal is to build a data base of names that might be used as new planets are discovered. It costs 99 cents to suggest a name or vote for one name, but there is discount pricing if you plan on nominating or voting for more than just one name. See http://betaclone.uwingu.com/faq/pricing for discounted pricing details for larger orders. We heard from many listeners with great ideas on how to promote planet naming because the goal for Uwingu is to put half the proceeds into the Uwingu Fund to support space development projects. Suggestions ranged from school and classroom activities to birthday parties, holiday stocking stuffers, gifts, and more. As you will hear, you can certainly nominate more than one name and you can vote for more than one name and you can vote as often as possible. Alan explained the rules governing a name nomination plus plans for versions of this concept to be in different languages on the Uwingu site. There are time parameters to this planet naming opportunity which Alan discussed during our program. The subject of payment came up and Uwingu accepts all major credit cards as well as Pay Pal. This is applicable for those outside the United States as well as here in the States. Alan explained the use of the Citation for your nomination. Here, you get to make a brief statement as to why you are nominating a specific name.
If you have questions or comments about Uwingu, the planet naming & voting opportunities, or anything related, please post them on The Space Show blog and I will call them to Dr. Stern’s attention. When you nominate a name, also post it on our blog so we can follow along with Space Show listener suggestions. Lastly, you will hear some “rough” edit cuts near the end of the program. Unfortunately, workers on the premises triggered a central station fire alarm and I had to excuse myself from the discussion with Alan for a few minutes to silence the alarm. This interference was edited out for our archives and podcasting recordings.

Guest: Dr. Alan Stern. Topics: Uwingu space venture, updates for New Horizons, Pluto and more. You are invited to comment, ask questions, and discuss the Space Show program/guest(s) on the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments, questions, and any discussion must be relevant and applicable to Space Show programming. Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright. We welcomed back Dr. Alan Stern to discuss a new kind of business venture, Uwingu (see www.uwingu.com). During our first segment, Dr. Stern fully explained this new venture and showed why it was like no other. We also talked about the start-up funding campaign on Indiegogo (www.indiegogo.com/projects/180221?c=home). For the record, I became a supporter of Uwingu after our program. I found the Indiegogo process to be especially simple, clear, easy, and quick. I do recommend you support Uwingu because it does represent a completely different funding model for space ventures, college education, programs such as The Space Show, research proposals, and more. As you will hear, Uwingu will sell space related products off their website (to be announced later), and the proceeds go to the Uwingu Fund to be used to give out awards based on review, due diligence, and in some cases, peer review. Alan explained this process in our first segment and in parts of our second segment.
In our second segment, we asked Alan for updates to the New Horizons Mission on its way to Pluto. We learned about important New Horizon events coming up in 2013, including a full rehearsal of the mission prior to its arrival at Pluto. I asked Alan about the Pluto postage stamp campaign and learned that it is now before the U.S. Post Office for consideration. Alan talked about other projects he is working on, including the suborbital research flight projects with the Southwest Research Institute. These projects include his being the PI of the LAMP instrument on NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission, which launched in 2009, and the PI for ALICE on ESA’s ROSETTA Mission. Going back to Uwingu, Dr. Stern was asked about ITAR issues, the social media contacts for Uwingu, and then he was asked about other questions pertaining to the Kuiper Belt objects, . As the program ended, Alan talked about the upcoming Next Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference, June 3-5, 2012 in Broomfield, Colorado. For full information about this conference, visit http://nsrc.swri.org.

Guest: Dr. Alan Stern. Topics: The upcoming Next Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference 2012 followed by a New Horizons and Pluto update. Alan Stern for this special one hour program to discuss the upcoming Next Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference to take place in Palo Alto, CA from Feb. 27-29, 2012. Note that registration rates increase after Feb. 10th so for those of you interested in attending, you should register before the cut off date if possible. To find out more about this conference and suborbital scientific research, visit http://nsrc.swri.org. During the first half of the program, Dr. Stern told us about the conference and fielded many questions about suborbital flight and science research. Not only did we go through the keynote speakers, the conference format, and the possibility of winning a ride on an XCOR Lynx once you register, we talked about the NASA Flight Opportunities Program (https://flightopportunities.nasa.gov), foreign interest in suborbital spaceflight and research, international spaceports, and the leasing of the vehicles much as is done in the airline industry. In the last half of the program, we talked about the New Horizons Pluto mission as Alan is the P.I. for the mission. As you will hear, the spacecraft is doing well and on its way to Pluto. Alan was asked about the actual New Horizons Pluto mission and then what happens to the spacecraft after the Pluto mission is finished. He said it would continue on into deep space, leave our solar system and become an interstellar mission much in the way of Voyager. He also said it had power on board for perhaps 25-30 more years and that it would study objects in the Kuiper Belt which it would transit. A listener asked him about the possible need to change course for New Horizons due to debris. Alan talked about this problem and the contingency plans to put New Horizons on a different approach to Pluto if necessary. We also learned that the New Horizons team started a petition drive at Change.org to have the U.S. Post Office issue a Pluto stamp for the mission. I signed the petition, perhaps you will want to do so as well. You can read about it on Alan Boyle’s Cosmic Log and he has a link in the article that will take you to the petition ; http://cosmiclog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/02/01/10284883-petition-pushes-for-a-pluto-stamp. There were 4,000 signatures for the Pluto stamp at the time of my archiving this program.
If you have questions or comments about this program, please post them on The Space Show blog. If you need additional information on the conference, use the contact information from their website.
