John Batchelor and I welcomed Larry Price, Orion Deputy Program Manager, to Hotel Mars. During our 12 minute Hotel Mars segment, we talked about the successful EFT-1 test flight and recovery, how Orion is different from the Apollo capsule, the new heat shield, and Orion’s capabilities. We also talked about the planned initial Orion missions which will be in cislunar space, the Moon and even out to the lunar LaGrange point. Also discussed were planned Orion BLEO missions past the Moon. Given the proposed budget increase for Orion and SLS for FY 15, I asked Larry was if this increase could speed up readiness of Orion. Larry also talked about some of the flight test equipment and the type of data collected from both the flight and the return. We also talked about using UAV imaging for the return as well as the use of two Blackhawk helicopters. Near the end of the segment, Larry was asked about the possibility of Orion landing on land. While it can do that, the trades don’t typically support it as landing on water is more efficient. He explains why in our discussion. Near the end, John asked about Orion’s computer and its power.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Marc Millis (www.tauzero.aero) to discuss the movie “Interstellar,” worm holes, black holes, event horizons, folding space, advanced propulsion, and the realities of faster than light travel. We talked about some of the representations in the movie plus John also brought in some details from the older movie from the late 1990s, “Event Horizon.” Marc explained the theory behind worm holes, the need for massive amounts of negative energy, and the challenge in keeping the worm hole opening open once the starship has entered the worm hole. Also discussed were some of the liberties taken with science in representing science issues in the movie.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Anatoly Zak (http://russianspaceweb.com) to discuss reports that Russian plans to end its ISS participation in 2020. Mr. Zak cautioned us several times during our Hotel Mars segment that with Russia, there is a big difference in their rhetoric as compared to their reality. We also talked about the threat to leave the ISS as a negotiating ploy to remove or at least scale back the sanctions against the Russian government. Anatoly was asked if the station could be operated without the Russian control center and participation. He said no but that it might be possible to enter into a commercial type agreement with Russia to buy their operating services if they did pull out. Other issues discussed included the smaller replacement Russian space station, the Russian economy and their lunar plans along with the coming test flight of the Angara rocket. As the segment ended, I asked Anatoly if Russia had been following the news of the Antares and Virgin Galactic accidents. He said they follow rocket news closely but was unsure if VG was on their horizon.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. David Grinspoon (http://funkyscience.net) to Hotel Mars to discuss Comet 67P, the Philae lander, and what has been learned so far from the science instruments aboard Philae and the orbiting Rosetta spacecraft.  We discussed the likelihood of Philae waking up and working again as the comet gets closer to the sun, the unfortunate landing of Philae and its bounces, plus the discovery of organics for the comet. We also talked about the chances of finding amino acids & specific proteins once the data is evaluated.  I asked how high Philae bounced on the landing and how close it came to escape velocity given the low gravity on 67P and the very light mass of Philae equal to about a paperclip or piece of paper.  We also talked about the comet ice and if the ice would melt or survive were a comet like this to enter the earth’s atmosphere.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Jeff Foust for the first ten minutes of our special edition Hotel Mars program. Our second guest was Doug Messier for the second half of the program.  During the first segment with Dr. Foust, we talked about the latest news on the recent Orbital Sciences Antares rocket failure.  It seems that Orbital Sciences is going to phase out the AJ26 rocket motor, replace it with a yet unidentified motor, and possibly do some short term launches of cargo to the ISS on an alternative rocket.  In the second segment, Doug Messier of www.parabolicarc.com was our guest to discuss the latest news regarding the SpaceShipTwo accident.  Doug talked about the NTSB investigation and disclosure about the on-off switch for the vehicles feather system, we talked about Virgin Galactic safety and the type of data that was collected which will assist the NTSB in the investigation.

John Batchelor and I welcomed the head of R&D for Made In Space, Mike Snyder, to discuss the placement of a 3D printer on the ISS. We covered the printer, the source material for this demo printer, ABS plastic, the effects of microgravity on 3D printing & how Made In Space resolved them, plus the future for 3D printing in space.  Important to the future will be the benefits from printing spare parts for long duration spaceflight, including future Mars colonization missions.  While today 3D printing in space is a demo project, tomorrow it might prove to be an important problem solver and risk mitigation tool for BLEO spaceflight.

John Batchelor and I welcome Dr. Oliver de Weck, Sydney Do, Koki Ho, & Andrew Owens to Hotel Mars for our regarding their paper and analysis, “An Independent Assessment Of The Technical Feasibility Of The Mars One Mission Plan.” You can download their 35 page report at  http://web.mit.edu/sydneydo/Public/Mars%20One%20Feasibility%20Analysis%20IAC14.pdf.  We welcomed the MIT authors of the paper “An Independent Assessment Of The Technical Feasibility Of The Mars One Mission Plan.”  John recorded four segments for an hour broadcast on The John Batchelor Show which is why you will hear the archived version divided into four segment with their own introduction.  In addition, we used a conference calling system to bring all but one of the authors on the program so you will hear a tone difference in this show and perhaps a soft echo type sound.  We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause you.

We started our 40 minute program by John asking Dr. de Weck for the origin of this paper.  Dr. de Weck took us back to beginning in 2004 providing us with an interesting leading up to the present time.  Given the number of guests on the program, John and I directed our questions to each person by name.  Some of the issues we talked about were life support for being on Mars and other issues referenced in their report & analysis “An Independent Assessment Of The Technical Feasibility Of The Mars One Mission Plan.” We also discussed the Mars One plan to grow food and the possible O2 poisoning resulting from that effort.  Since Mars One said that all the technologies were here now and on the ISS, the authors used the ISS as a source.  They discovered that many of the needed life support technologies are not available or tested for space let alone the Martian environment even if used here on Earth.  Our guests took us through many of the assumptions of the Mars One Mission as taken from their own statements and website.  The authors concluded that most if not all the technologies needed for humans to survive on Mars per their mission plan were today at a very low TRL or Technology Readiness Level.  Other issues that we talked about focused on the need for spare parts with this need rapidly growing to a point beyond Mars One capabilities.  3D printing was discussed as a replacement for spare parts  as was ISRU, the possible need for a rescue mission, Martian gravity & artificial gravity, Falcon Heavy launches and Dragon’s lined up on the Martian surface for the habitat plus other parts of the Mission Plan.

We welcomed Dr. Heather Knutson to Hotel Mars for our discussion about Exoplanet HAT-P-11b given it has been discovered that this planet has clear skies and water vapor in its atmosphere. Dr. Knutson explained how clear skies and atmospheric water vapor was confirmed, what it means for this specific Neptune size exoplanet and what it means for our planet searches in general.  We talked about it having a hot atmosphere, a core but not a solid surface.  The exoplanet is not habitable.  HAT-P-11b is 120 light years from Earth.  Dr. Knutson also explained why so many exoplanets have a cloudy atmosphere and why that limits our research into the exoplanet.
