We welcomed Chris Carberry, Executive Director of ExploreMars.org as we discussed the ExoLance Mars Life Detection project now in its design stage.  For more information, visit https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/exolance.  Chris explained the project, told us about some of the project’s consulting scientists, using the tungsten penetrator probes as possible spaceship ballast on upcoming NASA missions to Mars, and the “biology lab on a chip” concept for the actual life detection experiments on the penetrators.  Chris was also asked why finding life on Mars is important and why his group is looking to do this for microbial life rather than NASA.

We welcomed back Bill Harwood, veteran CBS Space Reporter, to talk with us about the recent success with the Orbital Sciences Cygnus ISS resupply vehicle plus the last ESA ATV 5 resupply mission now in orbit and due to dock with the ISS on August 12.  We spoke in general about ISS resupply and the download capability of the SpaceX Dragon.  Bill was also asked about the US goal of extending the ISS to 2024 but we wondered if Russian and the other ISS partners would go along with that extension.  At this time, it is an unknown.  The subject of US sanctions against Russia came up and Bill said that so far the sanctions had not impacted the ISS but that the station needs both the American and Russian sides to fly and maintain the station.  Bill did not know if the terrestrial politics would remain outside the space and ISS relationship with the two countries.   Bill also explained why ATV5 was the last ATV resupply mission.  We covered other topics as well during this Hotel Mars segment.

We welcomed back Anatoly Zak to discuss the new Russian launch vehicle that was successfully tested a few days ago. The new Russian rocket, the Angara, is a modular launch system that will eventually have GEO launch capabilities as well as human spaceflight capabilities.  It will be replacing the Proton rocket and eventually other launchers used by Russia.  The successful test launch was suborbital but the next test launch by the end of the year should be orbital.  Anatoly talked about the slow move away from using the Baikonur Cosmodrome.  Anatoly explained the 20 year period it took to test and fly the rocket.  The main problem was the lack of funding over this time.  He also talked about the plans to eventually test the Angara HSF version of the rocket.  I asked Anatoly about the RD-191 rocket motor which will be used on all version of Angara.  John used a good metaphor for the modular Angara launcher system in comparing it to a Swiss Army knife.

We welcomed back space attorney Michael Listner to explain and discuss the Air Force Motion to Dismiss the SpaceX lawsuit regarding launch block buys.  Michael took us through the motion which claims SpaceX does not have standing to bring their suit.  Michael explained the Air Force & ULA reasoning behind this position which they documented in detail in their motion.  We talked about the evolution of space law, where it is going, and how it relates to various components of the space industry.  Michael thought the Air Force motion was solid but one never knows what a judge might do.  Also, he pointed out that these cases are decided in a way that is most favorable to SpaceX who brought the original action against the Air Force.  Finally, this is not a regular court.  This case is in the Court of Federal Claims.  SpaceX has not yet replied but they have around 20 days from the date the Air Force filed their motion to respond.  We will follow up on this story with the SpaceX response.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience.  I welcomed our listeners to The Space Show 13th birthday celebration LITE.

During the first segment of our nearly 2 hour discussion, I started off with the usual announcements & talked about some of my perspectives with the space industry over time & as a result of hosting the show.  Some of what I said helps to explain why I go on rants from time to time about la la & thinking & being grounded in the sciences, engineering, markets, finance, etc.  Our friend & first caller was Michael Listner who called in to offer congratulations to TSS & me.  Michael has become a real friend over the years as a result of TSS & our Hotel Mars segments as so many of you have despite the fact that I have yet to meet many of you in person.  By the way, during this opening segment, I thanked all the listeners who have been sending in great emails about TSS & my hosting it.  I did not have time to read each & everyone but do know the success of TSS has as much to do with you the listener & you the guest as it does with anything that I do.  Also in this segment, I talked about a detailed email with questions from our friend Bob Krone.  I read his email on air & responded to most of his questions as best as I could though as you will hear, in a few instances I pleaded ignorance to what he was asking & in other instances, I lightly imposed my understanding of his question on him with my modified answer.  Don’t miss Bob’s excellent questions & how I responded to them.  In the second segment, we continued talking about Bob’s email, then Tony from Seattle called to talk about Bigelow, SpaceX, reusability, & being optimistic not negative. This prompted me to explain the difference in being optimistic & a cheerleader which I am not.  Tony also talked about SpaceX going to Mars, plus he had much to say in honoring TSS show.  He talked about methane engines & listener Doug’s work regarding lunar concepts & engineering, plus his frequent Space Show calls which are typically deemed excellent by Space Show listeners.  Brian Laubscher called to offer congratulations to TSS show plus he did a mini update on his carbon nanotube work & briefly let us know some of the space elevator updates.  Brian will returning to the show on June 8 for a full discussion re carbon nanotube work & advancements plus the space elevator.  As we were drawing to a close on the show, I again thanked everyone for their support & participation over the years & their contribution in making TSS successful for us all.  I joked with some of the listeners about another 13 years of TSS (I noted that I would then be 81).  If I am still able to do the show, I sure as heck hope we have gone some place, done some cool things, & that we are truly space fairing by then.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog.  If you want to reach any of the callers, you can do so through me.

We welcomed Anatoly Zak of (www.russianspaceweb.com) to the program to discuss  the Russian action underway in the Crimea and the Ukraine. Since the Ukraine has many supporting space industries, companies, and space products, we talked with Anatoly about the stability of our ISS partnership & interconnected space partnerships.  The U.S. has a strong dependency on Russia and in particular the Ukraine for Soyuz components, Orbital’s Antares first stage, and much more.  Anatoly thought things would remain stable providing thee was no escalation.  I specifically asked if he thought economic sanctions would represent escalation and he said yes.  We also talked about the new space center Russia is building, the consolidation of their space industry, and the Russian people’s interest level in space activities.
