We welcomed Anatoly Zak of (www.russianspaceweb.com) to the program to discuss  the Russian action underway in the Crimea and the Ukraine. Since the Ukraine has many supporting space industries, companies, and space products, we talked with Anatoly about the stability of our ISS partnership & interconnected space partnerships.  The U.S. has a strong dependency on Russia and in particular the Ukraine for Soyuz components, Orbital’s Antares first stage, and much more.  Anatoly thought things would remain stable providing thee was no escalation.  I specifically asked if he thought economic sanctions would represent escalation and he said yes.  We also talked about the new space center Russia is building, the consolidation of their space industry, and the Russian people’s interest level in space activities.

Guests:  Classroom:  Dr. David Livingston, Joe Carroll, Dr. John Jurist, Dr. Jim Logan.  Topics:  Manned artificial gravity research station in LEO.  Please note that this program originally aired as a Space Show Classroom program May 3, 2011.  This replay is being brought to you today as a result of the interest expressed in the subject during the Open Lines program of Feb. 2, 2014.  As this is a Golden Oldie replay, there is no live participation with this program.  If you have questions or comments for the co-hosts or Mr. Carroll, post them on The Space Show blog for this entry.  In addition, when the original Classroom program first aired, Mr. Carroll provided presentation material. You can see this material by going to http://spaceshowclassroom.wordpress.com/2011/05/01/lesson-three-presentation-material-5-3-11 and clicking on the two items available for review and download.  Also, the summary below is the unedited summary from the May 3, 2011 Classroom program which is posted both on The Space Show website archives for that date as well as on The Space Show Classroom archives for that date (http://spaceshowclassroom.wordpress.com).

Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com.  Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. Written Transcripts of Space Show programs are a violation of our copyright and are not permitted without prior written consent, even if for your own use. We do not permit the commercial use of Space Show programs or any part thereof, nor do we permit editing, YouTube clips, or clips placed on other private channels & websites. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm.

This two hour plus Classroom program was continuous without a break.  For this program, refer to the Power Point presentation by Joe, “Design Concepts for a Manned Artificial Gravity Research Facility.”  Mr. Carroll took us through this presentation slide by slide, plus he responded to listener and co-host questions throughout the program.  You can find this presentation plus his longer IAC Conference paper on The Space Show Classroom blog under Presentation Materials for our Classroom program for May 3, 2011.  Rather than writing a summary of this program, let me say that Mr. Carroll has given considerable thought to the engineering and human factors/human physiology issues regarding an artificial gravity research station in LEO.  Listener questions addressed technical issues relating to spin, center of mass/gravity, hits by orbital debris items and more.  Throughout this Classroom discussion, Joe took us into the technology, operations, and why’s regarding his artificial gravity research station.  Many issues were discussed including but not limited to Mars & lunar gravity, .06 G, spin rates, the Coriolis effect, the Gemini experiments, a Moon/Mars Dumbbell Concept, Airbeam tunnels, radial structure lengths, and much more.  Toward the end of the program, we discussed the economics, costs, and who might pay for and deploy such a station.  You will hear Joe talk about the present economic, cost, and R&D uncertainties for such a project, but you will also hear him talk about the commercial potentials, who should be given “free” access to the research station and why, the use of it with Space X as well as Bigelow, and why not doing it as a NASA project makes sense though he advocated NASA as a customer.  At the very end, I asked Joe about building some small models to help those of us who are not engineers in understanding and even visualizing his concept.  He liked that idea, talked about larger models of the size of a Boeing 737 cabin (he used this cabin size throughout his discussion and presentation), and possibly locating it at a company such as Space X.  As we concluded our discussion, all of us said that after 50 years of human spaceflight, to not be able to answer any of the questions regarding the issues discussed in this program was criminal. Furthermore, as you will hear Dr. Logan and the others say, you can determine the credibility of a human space program by the speed and determination of the commitment to understanding the necessary gravity needs for people, plants, and animals in space.  If there is no commitment to understanding these issues, the program is more likely a rhetoric only program.

We welcomed Darrell Preston to the program to discuss his article for Bloomberg News, “Billionaire Musk Gets Brownsville to Pay for SpaceX.”  You can read the article at www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-02-12/states-competing-for-spacex-by-offering-financial-breaks.html.  Our discussion with Darrell as well as his article explains how Elon and SpaceX got Texas and Brownsville to compete with offers and benefits to get SpaceX to build a launch site near Brownsville.  As you will both read and hear, Texas is competing hard for space businesses to come to the Lone Star State.  Its an interesting story.  In my opinion, “enlightened” states understand the benefits of going after commercial space companies for the future of their state.

We welcomed Dr. Humberto Campins to discuss with John Batchelor and myself the recent discover of the dwarf planet Ceres water spout spewing 13 pounds of water per second into space.  Dr. Campins talked about the possible two sources of water for Ceres, what it means and why it is such an important discovery.  We also talked about Vesta and the Dawn Mission as well as the theory that Earth water came from the asteroids.  Ceres helps to validate that theory.  This is a fascinating discussion about asteroids, water, and finding out more about our early start and existence.

During our 11 minute plus discussion, John, Dr. Elvis & I discussed the work done by Dr. Elvis in mathematically figuring out the potential number of commercially viable asteroids.  During the segment, he explains how he created his formula, he went through key assumptions with us, we talked about Delta V needed to reach the asteroids, the Delta V for the return trip with ore on board, and showing how this determines the minimum size for an asteroid of commercial value. He also said his analysis is probably on the conservative side and with more data, he can refine his analysis.  I am listing the URLs and articles that have reported on his work as he publication gave his work a different slant:  BBC:  The headline gives the wrong impression, though the article is fair enough (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-25716103).   Dr Elvis told BBC News: “I want to stress that my paper does not mean that there is no commercial future for asteroid mining. It does mean that gold mines are rare, which shouldn’t be too surprising. Not every mountain on Earth hides a fortune, and not every flying mountain in space will either.” New Scientist had it first:  www.newscientist.com/article/dn24696-alienhunting-equation-revamped-for-mining-asteroids.html#.Utf6F3kTs2Q.  Wired.co.uk:  www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2014-01/14/asteroid-mining-not-viable where they correctly say “Elvis does, however, continually point out in his research paper that the estimates are conservative, and that far more work needs to be done to improve upon these predictions. In fact, the paper is more of a call to action that a warning from a naysayer.”  Newser: www.newser.com/story/180656/there-are-only-10-asteroids-worth-mining.html;  Mining.com also has a good summary: www.mining.com/is-space-mining-commercially-viable-22553; They are all picking up off Slashdot (http://beta.slashdot.org/story/196587).   100s of comments, not all really to the point. Slashdot got it from a good summary at medium.com (https://medium.com/the-physics-arxiv-blog/e0063699d199).
