During our 11 minute plus discussion, Dr. Lu, John, and I talked about the Asteroid 2012 DA14 and its pass near Earth on Feb. 15 of this year, the discovery that Apophis is about 20% larger than originally thought and the significance of that discovery, plus our ability to deflect a NEO headed for Earth. We also talked about the B612 Foundation, its mission to protect the Earth from threatening asteroids before they find us, their Sentinel Project, and Dr. Lu directed our attention to their video on their website home page which shows NEOs in our solar system and around Earth. During our 11 minute plus discussion, we specifically talked with Dr. Zuber, the PI of GRAIL, about the Moon, the Ebb and Flow probes crashing into the lunar surface, the high resolution gravity map GRAIL has made of the Moon, lunar surface fractures and lunar water, and large lava-filled cracks that may be hundreds of miles long and many miles under the lunar surface. We talked about the significance of all of these GRAIL findings and addressed why Ebb and Flow crashed into a lunar mountain named after Sally Ride, the first American woman in space.

During our 11 minute plus discussion, we specifically talked with Dr. Mahaffy, the PI of SAM, about Curiosity, the first Mars rover able to scoop soil into analytical instruments. The specific soil sample we discussed came from a drift of windblown dust and sand called “Rocknest.” The site lies in a relatively flat part of Gale Crater still miles away from the rover’s main destination on the slope of a mountain called Mount Sharp. The rover’s laboratory includes the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) suite and the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument. SAM used three methods to analyze gases given off from the dusty sand when it was heated in a tiny oven. One class of substances SAM checks for is organic compounds — carbon-containing chemicals that can be ingredients for life. No definitive detection of Martian organics has so far been detected but as you will hear, it is way too early in the Curiosity exploration to rule out the possibility of organics on Mars. Dr. Mahaffy did say that perchlorics had been found based on questions by John, Paul talked about findings from Viking, Oppy, and Phoenix. In looking for organics, Paul told us that they needed to make absolutely sure that nothing being measuring came from Earth. Our guest of honor then explained the procedures being used to make sure there is no Earth contamination. Dr. Mahaffy had much more to say in this short segment so don’t miss it.

During our 11 minute discussion, Clara Moskowitz, science writer and editor at Live Science and Space.com, wrote an excellent article on the relationship of James Bond movies relative to the history of NASA with both human spaceflight as well as science missions. During our Hotel Mars segment, John wanted to know if government agents were pork and old fashioned in a way similar to NASA/civil space programs. Moonraker was discussed (for obvious reasons) plus we took a look at how Bond films evolved from the early days of Mercury with Dr. No to the latest movie, Skyfall, which uses advanced satellite and GPS technology as a natural part of our society and culture. We noted how the Bond space component evolution in many ways mirrors the reality with our space program. We also speculated that there might be a future James Bond on a Virgin Galactic SS2 space vehicle or a Dragon and become part of the commercial space movement.
