We welcomed back Bill Harwood, veteran CBS Space Reporter, to talk with us about the recent success with the Orbital Sciences Cygnus ISS resupply vehicle plus the last ESA ATV 5 resupply mission now in orbit and due to dock with the ISS on August 12.  We spoke in general about ISS resupply and the download capability of the SpaceX Dragon.  Bill was also asked about the US goal of extending the ISS to 2024 but we wondered if Russian and the other ISS partners would go along with that extension.  At this time, it is an unknown.  The subject of US sanctions against Russia came up and Bill said that so far the sanctions had not impacted the ISS but that the station needs both the American and Russian sides to fly and maintain the station.  Bill did not know if the terrestrial politics would remain outside the space and ISS relationship with the two countries.   Bill also explained why ATV5 was the last ATV resupply mission.  We covered other topics as well during this Hotel Mars segment.

We welcomed back Anatoly Zak to discuss the new Russian launch vehicle that was successfully tested a few days ago. The new Russian rocket, the Angara, is a modular launch system that will eventually have GEO launch capabilities as well as human spaceflight capabilities.  It will be replacing the Proton rocket and eventually other launchers used by Russia.  The successful test launch was suborbital but the next test launch by the end of the year should be orbital.  Anatoly talked about the slow move away from using the Baikonur Cosmodrome.  Anatoly explained the 20 year period it took to test and fly the rocket.  The main problem was the lack of funding over this time.  He also talked about the plans to eventually test the Angara HSF version of the rocket.  I asked Anatoly about the RD-191 rocket motor which will be used on all version of Angara.  John used a good metaphor for the modular Angara launcher system in comparing it to a Swiss Army knife.

We welcomed back space attorney Michael Listner to explain and discuss the Air Force Motion to Dismiss the SpaceX lawsuit regarding launch block buys.  Michael took us through the motion which claims SpaceX does not have standing to bring their suit.  Michael explained the Air Force & ULA reasoning behind this position which they documented in detail in their motion.  We talked about the evolution of space law, where it is going, and how it relates to various components of the space industry.  Michael thought the Air Force motion was solid but one never knows what a judge might do.  Also, he pointed out that these cases are decided in a way that is most favorable to SpaceX who brought the original action against the Air Force.  Finally, this is not a regular court.  This case is in the Court of Federal Claims.  SpaceX has not yet replied but they have around 20 days from the date the Air Force filed their motion to respond.  We will follow up on this story with the SpaceX response.

We welcomed to Hotel Mars Doug Messier to discuss the latest news and developments with Virgin Galactic.  Doug talked about their engine issues their replacement with a nylon fuel motor.  He also talked about possibly reaching 50 miles rather than 62 miles.  John asked Doug about the upcoming science flights and passenger flights.  Doug commented about Branson and his sons going aboard SpaceShipTwo after the Virgin CEO flies first.  John seemed skeptical about Virgin throughout the discussion.   Doug also talked about the investment company from Abu Dhabi involved in Virgin to the tune of $390 million.

We welcomed to Hotel Mars Pablo de Leon to discuss HSF capsules from Vostok to Dragon Rider. We discussed the capsule design, why we are still using them, how they were out of favor at one time and are now in favor, plus the future for capsules for human spaceflight.  We talked about the thrusters on the Soyuz plus what Dragon Rider is planning to use, plus electronics and computer advancements along with environmental advancements being used in the new capsules.  Pablo also discussed alternatives to capsules that we have attempted to develop over the years but without success.

We welcomed to Hotel Mars Dr. John Logsdon to help us understand recent statements made by Dmitry Rogozin of Roskosmos regarding the Russian future for the ISS past 2020, new space relationships the Russians are building with other nations, and the issue of Russia shutting down 11 US GPS correctional sites within Russia.  Dr. Logsdon spoke about out overall space program, policy and goals. We also asked if the US was dependent on Russia with out space program and we are not though we are dependent with them regarding the ISS.  We also talked about targeted sanctions against Russian individuals rather than the nation and what happens when things calm down.

We welcomed back to Hotel Mars veteran Anatoly Zak to help us understand recent statements made by Russia regarding their breaking off space relations with us by the year 2020 in response to U.S. sanctions against Russia over the Crimea and Ukraine. Anatoly provided us with valuable insights to the rhetoric on both sides, the Russian rocket engine issue, the newly announced Russian space budget, Russian-Chinese space agreements and joint programs, Russia’s new launch site and the ISS orbit, and the likelihood of Russian going it alone with their ISS module plus the unlaunched segments of what might make up a Russian only space station. We also talked more about the RD-180 engine problem. At one point Anatoly said damage had already been done regarding our joint space programs but he was optimistic the situation would stabilize.

We welcomed back to Hotel Mars attorney Michael Listner to help us discuss recent statements by the Chinese President indicating that China should pursue the militarization of space. Coupled with this were the new warnings from Russia that our new sanctions against Russia may force Russia to cease working with the U.S. in space. Finally, we talked with Michael about the SpaceX lawsuit against the DOD so that they can break the ULA launch monopoly for Air Force high value satellites. Michael took us through discussion points on each of these issues and from a legal perspective.

We welcomed back to Hotel Mars Dr. Haym Benaroya from Rutgers University. Dr. Benaroya discussed the NASA LADEE mission, lunar dust issues, the lunar surface, the importance our astronauts returning to the Moon and the Lunar Dust Experiment which so far has proven to be inconclusive regarding the questions it was to solve. Dr. Benaroya went over the toxic and corrosive nature of lunar dust to both humans and equipment, had similar things to say about Martian dust, and talked about how important it is for us to go back to the Moon. He also made the point that we should have a permanent settlement on the Moon and not just use it as a way station stepping stone to Mars, abandoning it again once we are on Mars. The three of us discussed the LADEE project in detail (as much detail as we could in this short segment). We also talked about its end which should come April 21 by crashing into the far side of the Moon.
