We welcomed back to Hotel Mars Dr. Haym Benaroya from Rutgers University. Dr. Benaroya discussed the NASA LADEE mission, lunar dust issues, the lunar surface, the importance our astronauts returning to the Moon and the Lunar Dust Experiment which so far has proven to be inconclusive regarding the questions it was to solve. Dr. Benaroya went over the toxic and corrosive nature of lunar dust to both humans and equipment, had similar things to say about Martian dust, and talked about how important it is for us to go back to the Moon. He also made the point that we should have a permanent settlement on the Moon and not just use it as a way station stepping stone to Mars, abandoning it again once we are on Mars. The three of us discussed the LADEE project in detail (as much detail as we could in this short segment). We also talked about its end which should come April 21 by crashing into the far side of the Moon.

We welcomed Marcia Smith of www.spacepolicyonline.com to the segment to discuss the National Research Council’s sanctions against Russia for their behavior in the Crimea/Ukraine region. We talked about the sanctions applicable to NASA, Roscosmos, exemptions from the sanctions of which there are several, the ISS, NASAs budget, the U.S. Congress and the continued funding, and a priority for SLS-Orion. We talked about Susan Eisenhower, a long time NASA advisor, siding with Senator Bill Nelson in thinking the sanctions may backfire on NASA & the U.S. because of the lack of scientific exchanges. Much more on this topic was discussed in this 11.5 minute segment.

Our discussion then moved to Uwingu (www.uwingu.com) and the opportunity for anyone to name Martian craters. John told listeners how the website worked by moving the cursor over Mars to see available craters, their pricing, and location.

We welcomed Anatoly Zak of (www.russianspaceweb.com) to the program to discuss  the Russian action underway in the Crimea and the Ukraine. Since the Ukraine has many supporting space industries, companies, and space products, we talked with Anatoly about the stability of our ISS partnership & interconnected space partnerships.  The U.S. has a strong dependency on Russia and in particular the Ukraine for Soyuz components, Orbital’s Antares first stage, and much more.  Anatoly thought things would remain stable providing thee was no escalation.  I specifically asked if he thought economic sanctions would represent escalation and he said yes.  We also talked about the new space center Russia is building, the consolidation of their space industry, and the Russian people’s interest level in space activities.

We welcomed Darrell Preston to the program to discuss his article for Bloomberg News, “Billionaire Musk Gets Brownsville to Pay for SpaceX.”  You can read the article at www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-02-12/states-competing-for-spacex-by-offering-financial-breaks.html.  Our discussion with Darrell as well as his article explains how Elon and SpaceX got Texas and Brownsville to compete with offers and benefits to get SpaceX to build a launch site near Brownsville.  As you will both read and hear, Texas is competing hard for space businesses to come to the Lone Star State.  Its an interesting story.  In my opinion, “enlightened” states understand the benefits of going after commercial space companies for the future of their state.
