We welcomed back Mike Gold, particularly in his new position as the Chair of the Office of Commercial Space Transportation (COMSTAC) Advisory Committee, as well as for Bigelow Aerospace updates in the second half of our program.  During the first segment of our one hour discussion, Mr. Gold talked about the Office of Commercial Space Transportation, the COMSTAC which is the Advisory Committee of which he is the new Chair. He also explained the relationship of the COMSTAC with the FAA AST and let us know that their meetings are open to the public.  Announcements, archived videos and other important COMSTAC information can be found on their website at http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ast/advisory_committee.  ITAR reform was also a big part of our discussion.

In the second segment, Mr. Gold provided us with Bigelow Aerospace updates.  We started with Tony’s email about the Landis Land orbit in the Venusian Atmosphere in which in which he inquired if Bigelow or anyone had any plans to put a habitat in that orbit.  Mile’s response seemed to leave some openings there for a future down the road.  We talked more about ITAR, a subject that was discussed in both segments.  Mr. Gold talked about the upcoming ISS Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM), which is scheduled to arrive at the space station in 2015 for a two-year technology demonstration (www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/news/beam_feature.html).  Mike mentioned that an astronaut would actually board the module.  We talked about government regulations, going BLEO and space property rights.  In fact, Mike suggested that the absence space property rights or legal processes for investment by private space companies is at least a partial explanation for why we have done so little in space development over the past several decades.  In the context of space based property right, we discussed the Outer Space Treaty (OST), benefit sharing issues, and the Moon Treaty.  Mike talked about an important first step in property right which would be to make sure that companies who operate and engage in space development can do so in an exclusive non-interference zone.  Near the end of the discussion we talked about the frustration in waiting for progress to be made, the earlier Bigelow successes including Genesis 1 & 2 and the BA 330 full service/size habitat.

John asked about their engine and fuels, I asked about passenger issues like being able to float freely, the need for spacesuits, and if there was government money invested in the project.  George talked about their test flights to date and their testing program.  I asked when prices might come down and their plans for Launcher One..  Doug talked about their engine issues their replacement with a nylon fuel motor.  Other topics were discussed as well.

We welcomed Ed Wright back to the show to discuss Citizens in Space and the new U.S. Rocket Academy Lynx Cub Payload Carrier they developed with the Texas A&M Space Engineering Research Center.  For more information, visit http://www.citizensinspace.org.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 34 minute program, Ed talked about space settlement per his recent talk at ISDC 2014 in Los Angles.  After introducing us to the topic, he talked about how space settlement needs to evolve to a permanent base by starting smaller and boot strapping along the way.  He explained the process as he visualized it and outlined how such a process, including how both suborbital and orbital flights would lead to job creation, eventually job creation in space.  As part over his overall strategy, he includes the Maker Faire movement and contrasted Maker Faire to a typical space conference where Maker Faire draws thousands of people and a typical space conference draws a few hundred to maybe a thousand people.  We talked about the role to be played by ISS, military space, and the challenges presented by the human factors medical issues as well as other technical challenges.

In the second segment, Doug emailed asking about the ISDC reception Ed got regarding his talk at ISDC.  Also, Charles emailed in during both segments to suggest the Microlaunchers approach and to once again voice his doubt about suborbital tourism becoming a successful industry.  We also talked about the Citizens In Space New Space Research Platform which is ready for flight testing, the Lynx Cub Payload Carrier developed with the Texas A&M Space Engineering Research Center and XCOR.  The carrier will be used on 10 Lynx mission and made available to XCIR customers as ready to fly hardware or even as open-source hardware.  You can read about it at http://www.citizensinspace.org/2014/05/lynx-cub-payload-carrier-ready-for-flight-test and at http://www.citizensinspace.org/2014/05/lynx-cub-payload-platform-will-be-unveiled-at-makercon.  Ed then explained how Citizens In Space is broader than his earlier program, the original Teachers in Space program, and that now preference for being flown to space goes to those submitting science experiments for the upcoming suborbital flights using the Lynx Cub Payload Carrier.  He offered excellent closing comments.

We welcomed Mark Fisher, VP, General Manager & Director of Huntsville Operations for Schafer Corporation (www.schafercorp.com.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 25 minute discussion, Mark Fisher introduced us to the Schafer Corporation which has in excess of 40 years experience and activity in the civil, commercial, DOD, & the government space industry.  We honed in on civil and commercial and Mark talked about Bigelow Aerospace, Stratolaunch, the entrepreneurial community, and NewSpace.  This discussion took us to new technologies and here Mark said that NewSpace was providing lots of new technology.  We also talked about human spaceflight and its growth, particularly on the NewSpace side of things.  Listener Jack emailed in a question about the wisdom of international partnerships to which Mark had much to say.  I asked our guest about overlapping areas with DOD & commercial space, then about pursuing ROIs from space activities & projects & if that was a big switch from just a decade ago.  That brought up a discussion about business models and the role Schafer plays with clients in business as well as with engineering as Schafer is an engineering company.  One point made continuously by our guest was that space investment leads to results but its an ebb & flow over the long haul.  We talked about space technology, computer, and electronic advances, plus changes over time in materials and optics.  The subject of launch vehicles & the industry came up, especially with cubesats, SpaceX & Orbital.  Pooley called in to talk once again about small launchers & Microlaunchers.  At one point he commented that Leo, being too crowded, should be abandoned for escape orbital opportunities.  Both Mark & I had some interesting comments per what Charles was talking about.

In the second segment we talked about the U.S. capability to build new launchers & engines but we also talked about the high costs and long development & testing time in doing so.  Mark shared with us his rocket motor development experience.  We talked about Mark’s Schafer team, the development of an internship program at Schafer, and Shafer employment opportunities.  A listener asked about difference in approach to the public, civil, & commercial side of space projects & the need for commercial to fund itself.  We talked about wireless medial monitoring, miniaturization, & other space spinoff technologies.  Much was said about the biomedical push by NASA.  I asked about the once robust Huntsville space economy which has had some issues in recent years. An inquiry was made about DOD, Mars technology development, sharing tools with NASA, and if we needed to make weapons to advance technology.

We welcomed Dr. Ajay Kothari to the show to discuss first stage  and full rocket reusability.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 44 minute discussion, Dr. Kothari opened with references to his April 14, 2014 Space Review article, “Robust and Reusable.”  I suggest you read this article and have it handy as a reference as you listen, http://thespacereview.com/article/2490/1.  Dr. Kothari explained  his model and analysis process to evaluate the costs and economics for rocket reusability options.  Our guest goes through his models and scenarios for us, notes that they are only for TSTO rockets (2 stage to orbit), plus he identifies his analysis and software tools.  His analysis led him to understanding the importance of the First Unit Production Cost (FUPC) and how this is a killer without a high rocket launch rate.  Dr. Kothari then talked about the possibilities for space tourism.  As you will hear, he thinks much more of orbital tourism over suborbital tourism which is understandable when you see his costing, price points, percentage of net income being spent on the flight, & a few other parameters.  When asked if he thought orbital space tourism would be the economic driver for rocket reusability, he said he thought it had the potential to be a significant contributor to it.  Listener Paul asked him about the reusability penalty due to added mass for a reusable rocket.  Ajay said they addressed that in their model and suggested a reusable rocket capable of the same payload and destination as an expendable would need to be 2-4 times the size of the expendable!  John from Ft. Worth was a caller with many questions but near the end of this segment, he asked for Ajay’s thoughts on the SpaceX reusable system and process.  Our guest thought highly of the SpaceX effort, process, and concept.  We also talked about both flyback and boostback options.

In our second segment, Dr. Jurist called in and addressed efficiencies in the learning curve which benefit expendables over reusables though our guest was quick to point out that after decades we still cannot build on these learning curve efficiencies to move further out with expendables in technology and cost reduction.  Dr. Kothari and John spoke about the flight rate b/e point which is largely unknown.  I then asked our guest about full rocket reusability and his ideas for a hypersonic second stage to orbit and back.  Dr. Kothari spent time with us during the balance of our program discussing his concept.  We even discussed point to point transportation as a result of this model and he suggested the innovative idea of combining limited orbital space tourism with Point to Point to make it more acceptable. Don’t miss his explanation of this idea.  Tim called in wanting to know about landing large payloads on Mars , possibly using inflatables or magnetic fields generated by a hypersonic in the Martian atmosphere. Doug was our last caller asking about rarefied gas flow & possibly returning to Earth from the Moon with a lighter weight heat shield, even what bouncing off the Earth’s atmosphere meant for Earth capture of the incoming spacecraft.  Our guest talked with him about this along with steady flow or steady heat conduction.  To conclude our discussion, Ajay summarized his models that closed the business case for orbital space tourism, including the one model that could not close.  Note the parameters he talks about for each model.  For more information, check out Dr. Kothari’s website for Astrox Corporation (www.astrox.com).

We welcomed Kevin Heath, CEO and President of Waypoint 2 Space, a new human spaceflight training company located near JSC near Houston, Texas.  Visit their website for more information, http://www.waypoint2space.com.  While our program was 90 minutes and covered two segments, since we talked about Waypoint 2 Space in both segments, along with their training program and plans, this summary will cover both segments as one.  We started our discussion with Mr. Heath providing us with an historical overview leading up to the creation of Waypoint 2 Space followed by the why of starting this business.  One of the important points made early in the discussion was the fact that Waypoint has received the FAA Safety Approval which is important, especially for the platform customers.  Kevin then went over their training plans and programs, explaining that they will have three main programs, a Level 1 Spaceflight Fundamentals; Level 2 Sub-orbital Training & Level 3 Orbital Training.  Waypoint also has a Commercial Payload Specialist Program which was explained to us.  Our guest went through the special equipment they have and will acquire as Kevin made the point throughout our discussion that Waypoint provided comprehensive spaceflight training.  As you will hear, the programs are being implemented as the markets appear. For example, the Level 3 Orbital Training Program will be delayed until there are orbital flights available for their customer base.  Kevin talked a lot about spacesuits in the training, having sizes for their customer base, and he described more regarding their comprehensive spacesuit training.  He also talked about making Waypoint broad to appeal to and serve a large and diverse market.  When asked, our guest went over the physical requirements for the program along with the guidelines for one’s health.  Listeners asked lots of questions, including wanting to know if training for focus, calmness, and on psychological concerns was part of the training.  Others asked questions about the training per se, space sickness, competition, and of course the pricing.  The price for the Level 1 Program is $45,000 & Kevin spent some time discussing pricing with us.  Later we learned that Waypoint has expansion plans that may even include a foreign type of franchise at various spaceport locations around the world.  Kevin was asked about special lunar or Mars mission profile and settlement training, plus I asked him if he used space tourism market studies in his creating the business.  Our guest had much to say about this particular subject.  Others wanted to know about class size, registration, & possible NASA endorsements to the training.

We welcomed back Dr. Jeff Bell & was at his best for blunt talk, specifically the need for a winning rational for human spaceflight (HSF).  For those of you new to Dr. Bell, hold on tight for a ride that will likely be upsetting.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 58 minute program, Dr. Bell started with saying he was pessimistic over the future of human spaceflight.  In fact, this was an overriding theme throughout the full discussion.  He said it was more than just not properly telling the story either by NASA or space advocates.  He said there was no winning rational for the need or the urgency of HSF.  While he was pessimistic on HSF, he was just the opposite on science, robotic, & unmanned missions which he said were doing well & in a class of their own.  He also talked about the success of satellites & that part of the commercial industry.  Listeners challenged him during the show.  He got several emails regarding space settlement which Jeff addressed in terms of his perspective on HSF.  He also nixed the idea of leaving Earth as a safety valve for when Earth might be destroyed by an incoming NEO.  This led Jeff to talk about planetary defense.  Tony called with an idea to keep a Martian settlement from freezing at night, a point Jeff talked about re Mars settlements.  A listener asked about radiation & magnetic fields.  Jeff said the atmosphere was more of a screen for Earth, again in a discussion about lunar & Martian settlements.  Jeff talked about Orion & SLS, various ideas for Mars missions & the NASA asteroid mission.  I asked Jeff what he was positive about & he replied the Russian space program & SpaceX with Elon.  He then spoke about some of the Russian programs he follows.  He was asked about space tourism & suborbital flights, then he spoke about SpaceShip2 problems, hybrid engine issues, Richard Branson & more.

In the second segment, he had more to say re SpaceShip2 & Branson.  Next, he was asked about space debris cleanup ideas being skeptical of them.  He was also skeptical of propellant depots.  He spoke about small boosters costing much more than using one large booster.  Pooley called in to support everything Jeff was talking about.  Dr. Bell was asked about Dream Chaser.  In general, Jeff was very critical of lifting bodies & their CG problems.  Listeners asked for his assessment of Inspiration Mars & Mars One which was not positive.  In his closing comments, he said HSF was probably mature & needed radical new technologies to make it cheaper & feasible.  I told him he should come back on the show, invite only callers & emails suggesting radically new & different technologies & he could assess the ideas.  Dr. Bell agreed to do that so watch the newsletter for this upcoming program.

We welcomed Jeff Smith to the program to discuss the recent Space Expedition Corp program held at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.  We initially learned of this event when Doug Messier was recent a guest on the program and since Jeff was going to be in Los Angeles, he decided to attend the event while in Los Angeles.  During the first segment of our 91 minute, Jeff introduced us to Space Expedition Corp (www.spacexc.com) which is a Netherlands based space service company wanting to sell & service flights on the XCOR Lynx suborbital vehicle in Curacao.  Jeff described the audience attending the event, spoke about the qualifications, expertise, and knowledge regarding the Space Expedition Corp’s (SXC) speaker at the event and others in the company.  Listeners asked many questions, including environmental questions regarding rocket pollution in the atmosphere.  Jeff said this was discussed at the event.  Another listener asked about ITAR given XCOR was working with a company in the Netherlands. Both Jeff and then later another listener, Carl, responded and explained the ITAR situation vis a vis XCOR.  Jeff also talked about opportunities in aerospace as a result of many leaving the Air Force or other services after their 20 years.  Another observation Jeff offered was that he thought more companies were interested in marketing space, not doing space.  Jeff was asked if SXC planned Lynx flights at locations other than Curacao.  Listener Carl responded that XCOR was planning flights in the States and elsewhere but it was not clear if SXC would be operating in locations other than Curacao.

In the second segment, I asked Jeff for his thoughts on the NewSpace industry in general, plus the emerging suborbital industry.  Here, Jeff had lots to say, including some concern for market issues and the low barrier to entry for parts of the industry.  Betsy in Tulsa asked him what inspired his interest in NewSpace and like many of us, Jeff was addicted to space everything at a very early age, chose to get an education in a related field and follow a career in aerospace.  He also wanted to follow the entrepreneurial side of things through NewSpace.  He said NewSpace seems to be more ideologically driven than traditional aerospace.  We talked about star gazing in Tucson, the Planetary Science Institute plan for telescopes on a Lynx, & the ability of students, especially at the high school level, to do science experiments that were space related through cubesats and more.

We welcomed Doug Messier of www.parabolicarc.com to the program to discuss Virgin Galactic and its hybrid engine problems.  Doug follows this issue closely and had much to say about their engine, testing program, powered flight tests, possible engine replacements and more.  He also talked about the role of Sir Richard Branson with Virgin and the possible commercial flight schedule for the company.

We welcomed back Doug Messier, Managing Editor of ParabolicArc.com for this 1 hour 43 minute discussion.  During our first segment, Doug talked about the proposed Google space program involving up to 1,600 satellites for global communication and wifi.  Doug shared with us as much information as was currently known regarding this program, plus he talked about the Loon Project and explained why he referred to the multiple satellite program as “Son of Teledesic.”  While no launch vehicle has been identified Doug and listeners did talk about the possible impact launch services needed for such a large program.  Doug also reported on Masten Space Systems. He also talked about Masten in the second segment.  Many listeners sent in emails about the proposed Google program, some expressing skepticism, some wanting more information.  Doug then turned his attention to Virgin Galactic and he talked about their powered test flights, engine issues, possible hybrid replacement engines, and more.  We talked about the signed up Virgin passengers and PR efforts to keep them informed of Virgin’s progress.  Doug also briefed us on XCOR and the Google Lunar XPrize contest.  A listener emailed in about the decline of the California aerospace industry and state regulatory issues.  Doug had much to say about this.  Before the break, a listener asked for an update on Stratolaunch.

In the second segment, Doug talked about the management changes at Virgin given three executives have left in recent times.  In addition, he said some of the lower level employees were sending out resumes.  In response to a question, he updated us on Virgin’s Launcher One.  We talked about Dream Chaser test flights, the name change at Dryden, & the NASA Ames name.  Near the end he gave us a brief report on Garvey Space, then Dr. Lurio called in and they discussed at length the Virgin hybrid engine issues, vehicle modifications, & the possibilities for a replacement engine.  Doug commented that they may not make it to 100KM!  As the program was ending, Doug said it would be an interesting year, that he thought there would be crewed vehicle flights later this year, and then he shared his thoughts regarding possible commercial crew downsizing. During this segment, I asked Doug to comment on his most exciting and frustrating stories of last year.
