We welcomed Jim Muncy back to the show to discuss the recent Virgin Galactic accident, Antares, commercial space, regulations & more.  During the first segment of our 100 minute program, Jim started off by discussing the Virgin Galactic accident and possible new regulations for the industry or vehicle specific to Virgin.  Jim explained the Commercial Space Launch Amendments Act of 2004 in terms of the regulatory regime which already exists and what might come about once the NTSB issues its final accident report.  This is an excellent discussion as well as clarification of the existing and potential regulatory environment so don’t miss it.  Space attorney Michael Listner emailed & called in to support what Jim was talking about regarding regulatory regime for commercial space with the AST.  Doug Messier sent in an email addressing the issue of there being a difference between having an incentive to fly safely and being able to operate safely with regards to Virgin as our conversation had turned to flight safety for the new spaceplanes.  Regarding flight safety, Jim made the point that safety was ongoing and a continued learning lesson, even after the vehicle was in commercial service. I agreed & pointed to commercial aviation accidents that have happened after thousands of flight hours as some defect shows up that late into commercial operations.  Jim seized the opportunity to talk about the choice of wording regarding space tourism and said it was not a good choice of words.  Listen to what he had to say about this.  We talked about negative press after the accident and here Jim stressed that the spaceflight in question was not taxpayer supported and was between private individuals and companies.  It was not the business of journalists or others.  Cost plus contracting came up with a listener question as did several established Republican senators and the role they might play regarding commercial space in the new congress.  Jim had made several earlier comments about the British press negative articles on Virgin and the industry.  I asked him why that was so and said it was largely Richard Branson driven given he is and has been such a controversial person in the UK.

In the second segment, we talked about some emerging commercial lunar opportunities that Jim has worked on for awhile.  He provided the background to the current situation including fights over SLS, Orion, & other big ticket NASA programs.  This is a very interesting discussion because it shows how one can find areas to agree on and work together and even get funded if the amounts are not too large.  I urge you to pay close attention to this part of our discussion.  As you will hear, the end result is the development of commercial lunar programs such as the NASA Lunar CATALYST Program.  Dr. Doug called from S. California to ask questions about CATALYST, public/private partnerships, & the ULA-Masten lunar lander work.  Listeners also wanted to know if  a ULA second stage would ever fly on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy such as the ULA concept ACES (Advanced Common Evolved Stage).  We talked about the Orbital Sciences plan to fly their cargo on another rocket while they sort their engine problems out and a listener asked Jim if he thought the Falcon Heavy would have a significant and positive impact on the dialog supporting the American space industry.  Near the end of the program, Christine in Chicago asked Jim if he was as excited today about commercial space as he was when he started out 35 years ago.  Do not miss Jim’s most reflective and thoughtful response to this question.  Jerry from Florida got in one more question by asking about Space Florida and a spaceport that could operate outside the realm of the Air Force range rules.  Jim had much to say on this as well as there is a definite need for modern range rules for commercial spaceflight.  As the program drew to a close, Benny in Dallas asked about the space interest of Senator Cruz and Becky asked what was going on with California aerospace and politics.  In his concluding comments, Jim hoped the commercial industry would soon be back on track, that 2015 would be a good and safe year for space.  We look forward to talking to him again on TSS.

We welcomed Rand Simberg back to the show for a wide ranging discussion on top space news items, the SS2 accident update, space policy issues, and more.  During the first segment of this 96 minute program, Rand led off with the mentioning of the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 12 launch.  Next up was a short discussion about Comet 67P and the Philae lander, then Rand mentioned his current article in PJ Media, http://pjmedia.com/blog/commercial-spaceflights-terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad-last-week-of-october.  Rand talked about what is currently known about the SS2 accident, the NTSB investigation, & that nothing has been ruled out as a cause or partial cause for the accident.  When asked if he thought the accident would cause the FAA to start regulating the industry, he did not think so but listen to his reply.  This topic also came up in the last segment of our show. Rand mentioned that XCOR was moving ahead & there technology is different from the one employed by Virgin.  He also made a point of explaining multiple times that a test flight was not a commercial flight.  Rand got some listener emails about investment in Virgin and if it was waning.  Helen emailed in asking about a possible lapse in the Virgin safety culture.  Carl emailed in about the impact of the SS2 accident on Spaceport America.  We switched gears and talked about Antares, the Orbital-ATK merger, & the use of Russian rocket motors.

In the second segment, Rand was asked about the possible impact on Virgin’s customer base.  Rand said that the bigger risk was the investment risk.  The RD180 came up again as did the Atlas 5, Delta 4, and the Falcon 9.  We talked about possible midterm election impact and here Rand thought there might be more impact on the DOD side than NASA.  We discussed projects that might be cancelled as a result of the election and the ARM topped the list.  he did talk SLS and thought that eventually it would be shut down, especially if SpaceX gets Falcon Heavy flying.  Rand also mentioned the NRC Pathways Human Spaceflight Study but was critical of it, especially the part that said there had been no and will be no launch vehicle advances for the past 30 years.  Dr. Lurio was our first caller & he wanted to discuss possible FAA regulations, his understanding of the test flight vs. commercial flight policy application & more.  They talked about hybrid rocket motor vibrations and the unknowns regarding the current test flight.  Toward the end of their discussion they joked about using SLS to launch many many cubesats.  Kirk emailed us with a question about methane engine.  Rand had much to say about methane rocket motors so don’t miss his reply.  Rand talked about hybrid rocket motors and some of their problems, specifically for SS2 and Dream Chaser.  I asked our guest about the upcoming Orion test flight and the heat shield comments offered earlier in the week by Bob Zimmerman.  I then asked if he thought there would be a surge in return to the Moon projects.  Michael Listner called in regarding the likelihood of safety regulations coming to pass as a result of the accident.  Rand and Michael had an active discussion about this possibility.  As the program was ending, Rand talked about his book, “Safe Is Not An Option” which is available online and in the ebook format.  Remember, if you buy it through the OGLF Amazon portal, Amazon makes a contribution to TSS.  Rand mentioned he might update the book once the NTSB report on the accident is finalized.  Read Rand’s blog, Transterrestrial Musings at  http://transterrestrial.com.

We welcomed Bob Zimmerman back to the show to discuss a variety of space news items and events.  During the first segment of our 2 hour 2 minute show, Bob opened up talking about Comet 67P, the Rosetta mission, and the Philae lander which will land on the comet on Nov. 12, 2014.  Bob spent some time describing 67P, the lander, the landing site, and the topography of the landing zone.  Next, I asked Bob about the recent court decisions in Italy regarding the appeals court decision on the seven scientists accused of incorrectly predicting an earthquake that led to lots of damage and death. Bob clarified the issues for us and the decision  of the appeals court.  We talked some about the possible impact on space policy for the recently held mid-term elections.  Bob was asked by a listener if he thought the election result would lead to the cancellation of SLS as well as the NASA ARM project.  See if you are surprised by Bob’s analysis.  Ken in San Diego asked Bob about negative press articles regarding stopping space tourism in light of the SpaceShipTwo accident.  The USA Today editorial of today was cited as an example.  Bob did not think these articles would have any serious or long lasting impact and had much to say about the authors and publications writing them.  Before our break, Rob in Denver emailed in about Comet Siding Spring changing the Martian atmosphere when it swung by Mars.

In the second segment, Jeff emailed in about comments that Virgin has said it would be flying by April.  Bob was very skeptical about that timeline.  He had much to say about the investment and more regarding Virgin.  Bob then spoke about the upcoming Orion test flight set for Dec. 4 and heat shield issues.  Our guest spent some time dwelling on the heat shield issues which he said helped make his case that SLS/Orion were not sustainable projects.  Ben called from Orange County to talk with Bob about the Bigelow module going to the ISS in 2016, then they talked a bit about solar sales.  Ed emailed Bob to see if he knew what alternative launcher Orbital might choose given the Antares problems.  Bob spoke about the upcoming Russian rocket test for the new Angara 5 rocket.  SLS John called in about earlier comments Bob made regarding the Saturn 5, then they talked about SLS.

Welcome to our Open Lines show.  During our first segment of this 2 hour 20 minute program, we mostly talked about both the recent Antares rocket explosion a few seconds after launch and the Virgin Galactic SS2 accident resulting in the loss of one crew member.  After my opening statement about not engaging in accident speculation and my reading an op-ed by Dennis Wing on the accident titled “Thoughts on the SS2 Crash” (http://denniswingo.wordpress.com), we opened the lines for callers. Dr. Jurist called first to strongly urge against speculation.  Michael Listner called & updated us regarding the Air Force-SpaceX litigation, then Michael talked about the SS2 accident & to guard against speculation.  He did give us the relevant parts of the commercial space law pertaining to the Dept. of Transportation and FAA having regulatory oversight of the suborbital industry.  He cited 51 U.S.C. § 50903(c) & pointed out this paragraph:  “(c) SAFETY.-In carrying out the responsibilities under subsection (b), the Secretary shall encourage, facilitate, and promote the continuous improvement of the safety of launch vehicles designed to carry humans, and the Secretary may, consistent with this chapter, promulgate regulations to carry out this subsection.”  Dr. Rowe called and talked about cardiovascular risks for longer spaceflights as well as the problems associated with using pharmaceuticals in space.  Bill also addressed some space tourism issues.  During this segment, I read an anti-space tourism article from Wired.com which you will see on the Dennis Wingo Blog as Dennis commented on the Wired article.

In the second segment, Kirk called from Trinidad.  He mentioned the SR71 flight breakup with Bill Weaver and the loss of the other pilot, plus I asked questions about the interest in space in Trinidad.  Dr. Dwayne Day called next to resist speculation on the SS2 accident, plus he shared some of his experiences in accident investigation and how things progress as he was part of the Columbia investigation team.  We then talked about really bad network and cable news reporting on both the Antares rocket failure and the SS2 coverage.   Dwayne recently did a tour of SpaceX and ULA so he told us about each one and highlighted some of the differences that he saw regarding each company.  I think you will find this discussion very interesting.  Dwayne mentioned early commercial spaceflight history, problems, and setbacks as points of reference for us.  Tim called from Huntsville about the SS2 crash and the Russian engine used by Antares.  He wondered if the British Skylon space tourism vehicle would be an alternative.  SLS John was our final caller who again urged against speculation on the cause of the accident.  He mentioned risks to the space tourism industry and concluded saying what others have said and that is that rockets are a risky business no matter what.

We welcomed former NASA astronaut Leland Melvin to the program to discuss Spaceship Earth Grants (SEG) (www.spaceshipearthgrants.com) as Leland is the president of the organization.  This program was a one hour show so there was no break as we had just one segment.  Mr. Melvin started out by telling us about SEG which he said was formed to do good in the world.  He talked about their contest for raising money to send people to space so that they will experience an orbital shift in perception (The Overview Effect) and upon return, do work and good with this new perspective of Earth.  They want this new perspective shared with others for the benefit of all.  He talked about the application for the contest and the fee structure which you will find fully explained on their website so see the above URL.  Leland explained that this was a crowd funding program though not like others that use specific crowd funding program such as Kickstarter or Indiegogo.  We also learned from a listener question that the contest winners will choose their own carrier for going to space and will need to comply with the rules & conditions set by that particular carrier.  Later, he mentioned that they would have a spaceflight training academy but details would not be announced until later in October.  The contest involves paying a fee which is on a sliding scale, submitting a video and writing an essay on why you want to go space.  I asked our guest why the average person needs to go to space.  Leland spent some time responding to this question so don’t miss this crucial discussion.  Leland was asked if students on a global bases seemed interested & inspired by space when he spoke to them.  He said yes & told us a great story about what happened with a Brooklyn student who slept through his talk.  We talked about international space cooperation, specifically with the Russians even when our non-space relationship with Russia was at a low point.  Regarding their contest, Leland talked about some of the benefits early adopters get by filling out an application, submitting the video, essay, and fee.  A listener asked if they would market their space flights for adventure as do the space tourism companies or are they only going after the change in perspective & Overview Effect benefits.  I asked Leland if he had experienced the Overview Effect on his two Atlantis flights. The same question was asked about his astronaut peers.  Leland had much to say in response to this question because when he went to space, he was not familiar with the Overview Effect but told us that what he experienced was the Overview Effect without putting a name to it.  Later in the program, we discussed SEG being founded on the principles of Muhammad Yunis, then Leland was asked by Kristin if SEG would focus on space settlement as well as tourism.  We learned that the organization was accepting applications from 156 countries.  In his summary, our guest talked about civilizations coming together through space, the orbital shift in perspective by just being in space, and the need to fund STEM programs/students.

We welcomed Michael Belfiore back to the show to discuss a variety of space news and current events items, plus trends in the industry.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 41 minute program, Michael talked about DARPA given his recent book on the agency, then we turned to the recent commercial crew down select NASA announcement naming the Boeing CST100 and SpaceX Dragon as the two companies that NASA will continue supporting for commercial crew.  We spent lots of time talking about Boeing and SpaceX plus everyone was wondering if Sierra Nevada and Dream Chaser would find a way to stay in the game.  The next topic was the Google Lunar X Prize challenge. Michael pointed out that a government had gotten to the Moon fist with a rover, the Chinese, thus the rules of the contest were changed to allow the contest to continue.  Marshall called to talk about the down select process and winners. SLS John called to tell us that he thought Dream Chaser and SpaceX would be the winners.  He and others suggested Boeing was the conservative choice.  He also asked about the news that a Boeing-Bezos deal was in the making for the new American made RD180 engine replacement.  Michael suggested throughout our discussion that the old guard or the traditional aerospace industry and participants were under lots of pressure from NewSpace.

In the second segment, we took a call from Doug who commented on the down select process.  Michael then talked about the Tesla deal for Nevada and their proposed gigafactory for electric car batteries.  We talked about electric cars in general, then Tim called to suggest a conversion kit for conventional autos to turn them into electric cars.  I questioned that from a market perspective.  Michael then introduced space manifesting and we talked about the 3D printer on the way to the ISS.  Michael mentioned Maven which was to be inserted into Mars orbit Sunday evening, 9:37 EDT.  News update:  Maven’s orbital insertion was a big success!  Congrats to NASA and the entire Maven team.  We also talked about Comet Siding Spring,  Suborbital flights came up and we heard Michael express concerns about Virgin Galactic & confidence with the Lynx and XCOR.  He talked about the early spaceflight participants and the risks they would be taking.  Visit his website, http://www.michaelbelfiore.com. We welcomed Dr. Bill Rowe back to the program to discuss cardiovascular issues for human spaceflight & EVAs, plus many other issues pertaining to long duration spaceflight.  Note that we experienced serious phone line issues with Bill about 12 minutes into the program forcing us to stop for repairs.  Evidently the fiber phone lines now serving Dr. Rowe cause broadcast equipment problems.  Bill was able to go to a neighbor’s house to do the show but you will hear some line issues plus unusual cuts as I spliced together part of his opening to the point we were able to resume with a good phone line.  Once past that point, there were no further phone line issues.  During the first segment of our 2 hour 11 minute program, Dr. Rowe introduced us to his discussion main points and we began using his website for references throughout the show.  It is important to be on his website and go where he points at various times in the discussion (see http://www.femsinspace.com).  While parts of the discussion relied on medical terms and descriptions, our guest did an excellent job of breaking it down for us non-medical types to easily understand the information he was sharing with us.  Among the issues we talked about were cardiac issues that don’t present symptoms, plus the problems with increased adrenalin secretion in the body which happens in space.  Dr. Rowe spent significant time discussing the adrenalin issues citing known astronaut examples.  In fact when talking about the adrenalin levels in space, he said that within five days of being in space the levels are twice that of being on Earth.  Another issue brought up was possible cardiovascular damage for excessive exercise and here he cited the research projects he had been involved in with marathon running athletes.  He strongly suggested the use of regularly taken electrocardiograms on the crews while in space.  Next, Dr. Rowe talked about EVA issues, specifically cooling.  He explained other risks and made the case for future robotic EVA missions instead of human mission.  Before the segment ended, he had much to say about exercise in space.

In our second segment, Bill reviewed for us his comments on oxidative stress and suggested we follow along with his website submarine model, http://www.femsinspace.com/Oxidative_stress.htm.  A listener then emailed in that the ISS did have an ultrasound on board which could be used for the purposes Dr. Rowe suggested (see http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/benefits/ultrasound.html).  Bill talked more about lunar dust toxicity plus magnesium and calcium usage in space and in general.  He referenced former astronaut Jim Irwin losing consciousness for a brief time on the Moon & he provided the reference for that fact.  Rodent research on the ISS was discussed, then he got a listener question about possible different health standards for government trained and fit astronauts as compared to space tourists and possible private sector astronauts.  Near the end of our discussion, space tourism came up and he pointed out risks for the middle age, overweight segment of the space tourism market.  Bill spoke to pharmaceutical use in space and the issues with it.  Just before ending our discussion, he pointed out that for Mars he thought an all female crew was best given the advantages they have over men.  He did explain his comment.

We welcomed back Mike Gold, particularly in his new position as the Chair of the Office of Commercial Space Transportation (COMSTAC) Advisory Committee, as well as for Bigelow Aerospace updates in the second half of our program.  During the first segment of our one hour discussion, Mr. Gold talked about the Office of Commercial Space Transportation, the COMSTAC which is the Advisory Committee of which he is the new Chair. He also explained the relationship of the COMSTAC with the FAA AST and let us know that their meetings are open to the public.  Announcements, archived videos and other important COMSTAC information can be found on their website at http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ast/advisory_committee.  ITAR reform was also a big part of our discussion.

In the second segment, Mr. Gold provided us with Bigelow Aerospace updates.  We started with Tony’s email about the Landis Land orbit in the Venusian Atmosphere in which in which he inquired if Bigelow or anyone had any plans to put a habitat in that orbit.  Mile’s response seemed to leave some openings there for a future down the road.  We talked more about ITAR, a subject that was discussed in both segments.  Mr. Gold talked about the upcoming ISS Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM), which is scheduled to arrive at the space station in 2015 for a two-year technology demonstration (www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/news/beam_feature.html).  Mike mentioned that an astronaut would actually board the module.  We talked about government regulations, going BLEO and space property rights.  In fact, Mike suggested that the absence space property rights or legal processes for investment by private space companies is at least a partial explanation for why we have done so little in space development over the past several decades.  In the context of space based property right, we discussed the Outer Space Treaty (OST), benefit sharing issues, and the Moon Treaty.  Mike talked about an important first step in property right which would be to make sure that companies who operate and engage in space development can do so in an exclusive non-interference zone.  Near the end of the discussion we talked about the frustration in waiting for progress to be made, the earlier Bigelow successes including Genesis 1 & 2 and the BA 330 full service/size habitat.

We welcomed to Hotel Mars George Whitesides, CEO of Virgin Galactic to discuss the latest news and developments with the company. John asked about their engine and fuels, I asked about passenger issues like being able to float freely, the need for spacesuits, and if there was government money invested in the project.  George talked about their test flights to date and their testing program.  I asked when prices might come down and their plans for Launcher One..  Doug talked about their engine issues their replacement with a nylon fuel motor.  Other topics were discussed as well.

We welcomed Ed Wright back to the show to discuss Citizens in Space and the new U.S. Rocket Academy Lynx Cub Payload Carrier they developed with the Texas A&M Space Engineering Research Center.  For more information, visit http://www.citizensinspace.org.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 34 minute program, Ed talked about space settlement per his recent talk at ISDC 2014 in Los Angles.  After introducing us to the topic, he talked about how space settlement needs to evolve to a permanent base by starting smaller and boot strapping along the way.  He explained the process as he visualized it and outlined how such a process, including how both suborbital and orbital flights would lead to job creation, eventually job creation in space.  As part over his overall strategy, he includes the Maker Faire movement and contrasted Maker Faire to a typical space conference where Maker Faire draws thousands of people and a typical space conference draws a few hundred to maybe a thousand people.  We talked about the role to be played by ISS, military space, and the challenges presented by the human factors medical issues as well as other technical challenges.

In the second segment, Doug emailed asking about the ISDC reception Ed got regarding his talk at ISDC.  Also, Charles emailed in during both segments to suggest the Microlaunchers approach and to once again voice his doubt about suborbital tourism becoming a successful industry.  We also talked about the Citizens In Space New Space Research Platform which is ready for flight testing, the Lynx Cub Payload Carrier developed with the Texas A&M Space Engineering Research Center and XCOR.  The carrier will be used on 10 Lynx mission and made available to XCIR customers as ready to fly hardware or even as open-source hardware.  You can read about it at http://www.citizensinspace.org/2014/05/lynx-cub-payload-carrier-ready-for-flight-test and at http://www.citizensinspace.org/2014/05/lynx-cub-payload-platform-will-be-unveiled-at-makercon.  Ed then explained how Citizens In Space is broader than his earlier program, the original Teachers in Space program, and that now preference for being flown to space goes to those submitting science experiments for the upcoming suborbital flights using the Lynx Cub Payload Carrier.  He offered excellent closing comments.
