We welcomed Dr. James (Jim) Benford to the program to discuss his book (he was the co-editor) “Starship Century,” and his chapter, Sailships, plus his editing of the book.  During our first segment of this 1 hour 26 minute discussion, Dr. Benford introduced us to Microwave Power Beaming, sailships, solar sails, terrestrial beamed power, in-space beamed power and more.  We talked about microwave beaming as a possible space weapon, the storage of beamed energy, and the use of the millimeter band width for beamed power.  Also in our first segment, we talked about possible time lines for development for interstellar travel.  In this discussion, our guest used Alpha Centauri B as a reference point.  Propulsion in general was discussed with a thumbs down for chemical rockets for doing anything like what we were talking about in this segment.  Listeners asked questions as to why interstellar travel was important at this time given it is so far into the future.

In our second segment, we talked about his goals in editing the book and the fact that if it is bought through the book’s website, www.starshipcentury.com, the proceeds are donated to legitimate interstellar organizations and research.   Jim listed several of the organizations being considered for receiving such proceeds and interestingly, most if not all have been guests on The Space Show over the years.  Dr. Benford mentioned conferences and the Arthur C. Clarke Center at UCSD.  We then talked about the Fermi Paradox and factor L as to the probabilities of finding intelligent life someplace other than Earth.  Faster Than Light Travel was a discussion topic, Jim was asked what his non-space friends thought of his microwave beam power work and interstellar travel.  A listener asked about students in these subject, particularly in the UK and the US.

We welcomed Dr. John Cramer to the program to discuss his chapter in the book “Starship Century.”  Dr. Cramer titled his chapter Exotic Technologies for Interstellar Travel.  Remember, if you purchase this book using The Space Show/OGLF Amazon portal, Amazon will contribute to The Space Show.  Instructions for doing this are in all archived program summaries on our website and our blog.  Dr. Cramer’s website is http://faculty.washington.edu/jcramer.  During the first segment of our 90 minute discussion, Dr. Cramer talked about his chapter, interstellar spaceflight, exotic technologies, and the Quantum Grounded Theory.  He mentioned James Woodward and his work with Mach’s Principle.  I also asked him about the level of interest expressed by his students in interstellar travel and we talked about timelines for realizing interstellar travel.  Our guest said we needed breakthroughs and the progress in 100 years would depend on realizing key breakthroughs.  Dr. Cramer suggested that our challenges were still in the fields of theory as we needed much better understandings of lots of things associated with interstellar travel.  The issue of space settlement came up in terms of Mars and deep space.  We also talked about worm holes but we spent more time on that subject in the second segment.  I asked if finding the Higgs-Boson was helpful. Dr. Cramer had much to say on this as well as on the LHC and colliders in general.  Dr. Cramer was asked about his science fiction works and his writing for Analog.  We also talked about the impact of our having cancelled our collider to be built in Texas and the impact of that decision on American science for decades following that political decision.

In the second segment, Dr. Cramer went into more detail about worm holes, including an explanation of the “back reaction” issue.  Later, we talked about timelines, budgets and our political funding process.  Near the end of the program, NASA was discussed as was our reliance on large rockets.  Dr. Cramer said we would need to get away from rockets and propulsion thrust if we were to do anything with interstellar travel or deep space.  At the end, he was asked about ET based on the comments Dr. Davies made on his interview earlier this week.

We welcomed Dr. Paul Davies to this 65 minute discussion about his contribution to the excellent book, “Starship Century: Toward the Grandest Horizon.” Other topics included interstellar travel, microbiology, human spaceflight, Mars, ET and much more.  We started our discussion with his Afterword in the “Starship Century” book and I asked him about his comments regarding microbes.  One quickly learns from reading his Afterword that it is not the propulsion and engineering that presents the greatest challenge to interstellar travel but what happens to essential microbes needed for life in microgravity and the space environment.  We learned that even in LEO such microbes can transform and become toxic to life.  This is a fascinating microbiology discussion regarding deep space missions to Mars, the Moon, and long interstellar travel. Don’t miss what Dr. Davies said about microbes as it opens up an entirely new study in human factors for human spaceflight.  Other issues we talked about included planetary contamination, microbial ecosystems, figuring out the minimal needed for sustainability regarding the good microbial environment.  Also, what microbes are crucial and those that might be irrelevant for the spaceflight passengers as well as for animals and plants needed for sustaining the mission.  Dr. Davies was asked that given microbiology being a bigger challenge than propulsion and engineering, were we close to having propulsion and engineering for interstellar travel.  You will appreciate his very “witty” answer to this listener’s question.  Faster than light travel came up and so did the work being done around the Alcubierre Drive.  Dr. Davies had much to say about faster than light travel, the speed of light, physics, and related disciplines.  In this discussion, we also talked about both black holes and worm holes.  Later, we talked about the possibility of life in the solar system other than on Earth.  You might be surprised by some of what Dr. Davies said, including the probabilities that Earth might have been visited over 100 million years ago.  Don’t jump to conclusions, listen to the discussion first.  Helen of Atlanta asked why bother with interstellar travel when we can’t even return to the Moon. Again, another terrific response by our guest.  More came up on the Fermi Paradox, the need to stay grounded in fundamental science but to have a vision and healthy skepticism.  Viking and Gil Levin came up regarding the possibility of life on Mars and the reluctance of NASA to do biological experiments regarding the possibility of life on Mars.  A listener asked our guest about ET conspiracy theories and government cover-ups.  In closing, Dr. Davies reminded us to have and conduct healthy speculation which means always staying in tune with fundamental science.  That is what separates speculation from fantasy, Kool Aid, and La La thinking.  As the program was ending, we talked some about his work in cancer research. Guests: Dr. Richard Obousy, Dr. Eric Davis, Dr. Harold Sonny White.  Topics:  Faster Than Light (FTL) Travel, Warp Drive, Interstellar Travel. Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. Written Transcripts of Space Show programs are a violation of our copyright and are not permitted without prior written consent, even if for your own use. We do not permit the commercial use of Space Show programs or any part thereof, nor do we permit editing, YouTube clips, or clips placed on other private channels & websites. Space Show programs can be quoted, but the quote must be cited or referenced using the proper citation format. Contact The Space Show for further information.  We welcomed our three guests, Drs. Obousy, Davis, and White to the program to discuss FTL travel, warp drive, and interstellar flight.  More information is available at the Icarus Interstellar website, http://www.icarusinterstellar.org.  We did not take a break during our program.  Also, at times our discussion was technical and scientific. I looked up many terms & used my search engine frequently during the discussion given the advanced nature of the subject and our discussion.  Don’t be shy about looking up that which you may not understand or know about. I promise, if you do it will be well worth your time.  We started with an introduction to Icarus Interstellar, FTL travel, and why interstellar propulsion & travel is important.  Our guests then suggested the two most common approaches to FTL travel included warp drive and worm holes.  For most of the program, we focused on the characteristics and research around warp drive.  Our guests explained their research, including how they were able to develop the theories that reduced the amount of energy needed for warp drive from Jupiter size energy requirements to energy requirements representing the approximate mass of Voyager 1.  Our discussion addressed the Miguel Alcubierre warp drive in light of the advanced work by Dr. White and others.  The concept of the McMonigal Fatal Flaw was addressed with our guests explaining why it was not applicable.  The workings of the warp drive were explained and though the discussion was heavy in physics, I urge you to take the time and embrace & learn about the advanced theoretical physics subjects discussed by our guests.  Later, a listener asked about the use of a sun gravitational lens telescope at a specific AU from the sun as perhaps an alternative to interstellar flight.  As you will hear, such a device would likely be a good tool enhancing FTL travel, not replacing it.  As our discussion progressed, or guests rebutted many of the warp drive criticisms. Near the end of the program, we talked about what was needed to go from the lab and theory to small scale demo experiments to prove out the concepts.  Our guests referenced to the Chicago Pile-1(CP-1) 1942 nuclear experiment & the subsequent step by step evolution of nuclear technology.  Our guests talked about starting small with a demo proof and evolving upwards with more and more discovery, technology, and engineering.  Another example cited for the typical development path included the discovery of the electron in 1897 followed by the discovery of the proton in 1917, and the discovery of the neutron in 1932. Throughout our discussion, our guests put forth compelling reasons why we should be developing FTL travel and interstellar spaceflight.  Their respective concluding comments reinforced the importance and why of our being interested in FTL and exotic concepts.
