Welcome to this two hour webinar regarding the choices and considerations that can be made in designing and configuring launch systems.  TO VIEW THE WEBINAR VERSION OFTHIS PROGRAM, GO TO https://vimeo.com/126223310.   Note that on the blog for this program are two Power Point presentations for your use.  Dr. Jurist referred to both of them during the webinar, especially the presentation titled “Choices: Some Considerations in Configuring Launch Systems.”  I urge you to follow along with them during the webinar.  During the first segment, Dr. Jurist explained the target market for the webinar and his two presentations.  He then talked about how hard it was to go to Mars and do other missions.  Then he got to the point by saying in designing or configuring the launch system for a mission, you started with the payload requirements which then provide additional constraints once the payload has been defined.  He also talked about the application of the basic rocket equation and explained the importance of exhaust velocity, the Delta-v, and the mass ratio.  Listeners started asking questions so two stage compared to single stage was discussed.  John pointed to the Choices presentation, slide 8.  He talked about propellant and pressures, both in a pressure fed system and with a turbo pump system.  Another listener asked about solids versus liquids, then Marshall called to talk about rocket g forces.  Dr. Jurist talked about designing the rocket envelope environment to the payload specifications.  He then brought in and discussed the vibration envelope.  Helen asked how things would be different with a human payload rather than a satellite or cargo.  Reliability was a big concern.  Near the end of the segment, Dr. Jurist talked about payload mass in Leo and BLEO.  Doug inquired about the gravity loss during the launch, then the segment ended talking about heavy lift, solids and proportional cost factors for SRBs.


In the second segment,  Penny asked how the variable that had been discussed would change were one launch from the Moon or Mars.  Adrian emailed in about the NERVA rocket and nuclear propulsion.  Dr. Jurist used the German V2 as an example of launching from the Moon.  Specific impulse and exhaust velocity came up again, then the focus turned to rocket motor cooling systems.  Questions continued coming in asking about 3D printing of rocket motor parts to lower the cost and the use of hybrid rocket fuels with their advantages and disadvantages.  Regulatory issues came up in this segment as did political issues, plus our guest got a question about amateur rocketry.  A listener asked about environmental concerns over rocket fuel . Dr. Jurist directed the audience to the Choice presentation, slide 22, and talked about ways to possibly shed some weight such as dumping the payload shroud.  Near the end, John got questions about the Falcon Heavy, Doug called in with questions about lunar lander economics and more.  In closing, Dr. Jurist said “the fundamental theme of the presentation was the many variables that come into play in designing or configuring a space launch system, how the many variables are inter-related, and how every decision in the process constrains or narrows the remaining options.”

We welcomed Charles Pooley back to the program to discuss his Microlaunchers concept in detail.  You can follow along and learn more about the program from visiting www.microlaunchers.com.  Charles started the discussion with his comments on the NANOSAT Challenge and the logo design winner.  From there, he directed us to his website and began talking about the initial project, the ML-1 launcher.  Charles spent most of the first segment talking about his Microlauncher plans.  Callers asked him about the technology, RC airplanes, liquid fuel motors, amateur launches, FAA AST rules, his three stage design, and even his having wanted to use irrigation tubing for his launchers.  I asked Charles for his time line for getting Microlaunchers off the ground and he talked about this on and off for the entire discussion.  Funding idea were tossed around, including the use of crowd sourcing and Kickstarter.  The Small Sat Conference came up with lots of pressure on Charles to attend.  Guidance systems and ITAR came up and there was more discussion about FAA AST launch rules, range fees and tracking.

In our second segment, a listener called in to suggest that Charles start writing articles for The Space Review and use social media including Facebook and Twitter.  A listener asked about tracking and data collection for his rockets, and more comments came in directing Charles to learn & start using Twitter to help get the word out about his ideas.  I then asked Charles to give us his step by step action plan.  In response, he outlined the first four or five steps of his plan.  Charles got more feedback for the usage of Twitter & social media and then Charles took us through ML-1 through ML-3.  Near the end of the show, Charles was asked about Google Lunar X Prize as compared to his model. He had much to say about this comparison.  We talked about N-Prize and Charles offered us a good summary of the Microlaunchers concept for his closing comments.

Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright.  We welcomed Dr. Perry Ballard, Chief Engineer, DOD Manned Spaceflight Payloads Office, Space and Missile Systems Center, JSC.  Dr. Ballard began our discussion with an overview of the DoD Space Test Program (STP), why it was created, its purpose, and some of the experiments that have flown with great success because of STP efforts.  Dr. Ballard also spoke about the Hyperspectral Imager for the Coastal Ocean (HICO) imaging spectrometer mission which with the help of STP flew on the Japanese Experiment Module Exposed Facility (JEM-EF) on the ISS.  Dr. Ballard responded to listener questions about the impact on STP of budget cuts as well as payload capacity downgrades due to the retirement of the shuttle.  You might be surprised by his response to these questions.  Another issue that was addressed was the NASA two year integration period for ISS missions.  Lots of questions came in about this, most wondering if a private company such as Bigelow could substantially reduce the two year period.  This prompted a more thorough discussion about integration and each rocket’s environment as well as the way it rides.  Professor Fevig from UND Space Studies asked about opportunities for student-built spacecraft to be launched as a secondary payload into GTO.  Launching to GTO, specifically cubesats, also turned into a significant discussion that you will not want to miss. At the end of this segment, Perry received some questions about assisting with payloads for sounding rockets.  In his response, he said they also work with balloon launches and sometimes even with high altitude aircraft. 

In our second segment, we talked about secondary payload capacity and the need for the payloads to be ready when the capacity is ready.  If the payloads are not ready, the capacity can go elsewhere.  This is quite a challenge for the university and cubesat community.  When you listen to what Dr. Ballard had to say about this issue, some of the challenges, the relationships with payloads, integration, timing, missions, and orbital dynamics, will become much clearer.  Later in this segment, Perry was asked about STP using foreign launchers and also finding rides for foreign payloads. 

In our final segment, we talked about the work of his office with the amateur satellite network, the challenges to provide ground stations for schools, and to increase broadband capacity.  He talked about the mission priority list he gets that he has to work with and the priorities for science missions above all else. Later in this segment, he put forth his own idea of getting sponsors, Space Grant, and others to supply rocket motors to student groups, classes, organizations, to help inspire students by actually doing things rather than just hearing a lecture or reading a book.  See what you think of his idea and run with it if you like it.  His idea is centered around getting students to build spacecraft, to bend metal so to speak.  Since the rocket motor may be the most expensive part needed, if it can be furnished by a sponsor, he believes it can be a driver for STEM education at different grade levels through college.  If you have comments or questions for Dr. Perry Ballard, please post them on The Space Show blog URL above.  Any notes you have for Dr. Ballard can be sent through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.
