We welcomed Dr. Stuart Robbins to the show to discuss craters throughout the solar system, life experiments for Mars, thresholds for evidence, his PseudoAstronomy blog and podcasts, and education plus public outreach. In the first segment of our 1 hour 37 minute program, Dr. Robbins started out by sharing with us how he got interested in Mars as part of his thesis project. We then discussed his crater analysis work on Mars, Mercury, our Moon, and Saturn’s moons. This detailed crater discussion was most interesting so don’t miss it. Additional topics included why study craters, dating, Carbon14 and other radio metric ways to date objects & zones off Earth. You will learn about the significance of crater size per planetary body, determining age, impacts and more. We even compared impact craters on Earth to those elsewhere in the solar system. Also discussed were Canyon Diablo Meteorites regarding Meteor Crater in Arizona, and the use of craters as a poor man’s drill. Listeners asked about asteroid impacts and the impact on possible life or past life traces in an impact crater. Prior to the segment ending, he talked about the high bar needed for confirming evidence of life off Earth.

In the second segment, Dr. Doug called in to talk about a way to do an experiment, possibly no costlier than Curiosity, to search for life on Mars. This involved the use of a tethered rover which our caller explained. More than technology issues, our guest pointed out the policy and economic challenges that are today governing space policy & projects which made him skeptical about doing something like Doug suggested. Dr. Robbins was asked several times during our discussion if NASA wanted to discover and disclose life on Mars. When this discussion comes up on programs, planetary protection is brought up and with Dr. Robbins, this is also what happened. Note how Dr. Robbins described planetary protection during our discussion. I switched topics and asked him to talk about his blog and podcast, Exposing PseudoAstronomy. You can read his blog @ https://pseudoastro.wordpress.com. You can hear his podcasts @ http://podcast.sjrdesign.net. More questions came in applicable to life on Mars, the threshold necessary for convincing evidence of Martian life, then I asked him about some of the popular paranormal and UFO topics that often pass off as real science. We talked about what makes so many of these stories believable to so many people. I wondered if it was our collective poor science education but Stuart suggested other reasons which you will hear him discuss. Adrian sent in a great email question about the expectation to find DNA off Earth which Adrian pointed was a bogus expectation. I read his note in full, Dr. Robbins agreed completely with him as do I so again, don’t miss what Adrian had to say. Stuart also talked about some of the famous UFO cases, image faking, CGI, and more. Near the end of the show, I asked if we could expect new big announcements from our Mars studies or would it be a much slower evolving process. He said the big things had probably been studied so he expected a type of evolutionary process for new Mars information. On the other hand, because we know so little about Pluto, New Horizons was providing us with giant leaps forward with our Pluto knowledge. The last question came in from Randy who wanted to zero out costs and risks and then find out if humans produced better research or was it robots. The answer was humans but when you add in risk and costs, the answer goes to robots. Listen to how Stuart explained this. Don’t miss Stuart’s closing comments.

We welcomed Dr. Don Lincoln back to the show to discuss his new book “Alien Universe: Extraterrestrial Life in Our Minds and in the Cosmo.”  During the first segment of our 1 hour 29 minute program, Dr. Lincoln discussed why he wrote this book, especially given his position as a senior scientist at the Fermilab plus his work in Cern at the Large Hadron Collider. After the introduction, he took us through major events, both physical and cultural that have fueled alien interest including the Betty and Barney Hill case, Roswell, and more.  He took us through these events with an actual historical timeline which put the events in a somewhat different perspective than we are used to hearing.  We also talked about the Drake & Fermi equations and the seven parameters of the Drake Equation, many of which have been upgraded due to new scientific information coming to light in recent years from the Kepler mission and other tools/events.  SETI was a topic of discussion as was the use of radio waves and light for ET detection.  The subject of alien abduction came up and Don pointed us to the 1835 media buzz known at the moon hoax appearing in the first tabloid style newspaper.  This was an interesting history lesson that was new to me and probably to many listeners as well.  Marshall called in to talk about Drake radio waves, the signal to noise ration, and a planet being either too close to the center of the galaxy or too far from the center of the galaxy which causes the planet to be a metal poor planet. Dr. Lincoln had much to on this subject.  Next, we talked about microbial life on Mars.  John from Ft. Worth called to talk about impractical physics given the need to cross interstellar space. Don agreed and talked about the possibility of using probes.;  The subject of technology & options such as a mother ship plus scout ships came up.  John and Don talked about the lack of objective studies and the difficulty in working with assumptions.  Don also talked about the high standards used in science which are hard to apply to the alien visitation theories.  Scientists are not usually inclined to lower their standards so true scientific studies on alien visitation are a challenge.

In the second segment, we talked about the Roswell event.  Our guest had much to say about this event so don’t miss this part of our discussion.  Some scientific studies were mentioned such as Project Blue Book. I asked about studies by other nations and scientists outside the U.S. We came back to microbial life off Earth which is an important study subject by scientists across many nations.  Near the end of the program, Dr. Lincoln talked about the idea of First Contact, Star Trek, and comments made by Professor Stephen Hawking.  In the concluding minutes of our discussion, I asked our guest about part of his subtitle, “Life in our Minds” & Don talked about how this subject has come to our minds.  He left us with a good summary and strongly urged us to separate sociology issues from astrobiology, the latter being a credible science in search of life off Earth.

We welcomed Dr. Bruce Damer back to the show to discuss his 3D real time simulations, the human NEO mission study & design project, planetary protection, astronaut safety and much more.  Here are the websites Bruce mentioned on air:  www.damer.com, www.levityzone.com, and www.digitalspace.com.  In addition, later in our discussion Bruce also talked about a Dave Brody YouTube video that was relevant to our discussion.  You can find this video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAm9escDxu0.   In the first segment of our 1 hour 31 minute discussion, Dr. Damer talked about the renewed interest in asteroid projects within NASA and by others, especially after the Russian event a few months ago.  Dr. Damer had lots to say about a recent meeting he attended at AMES, budgets, and the renewed interest in the subject.  Listeners started asking him questions early on, including questions about docking with an asteroid with little or no gravity, the use of aerogel to collect micrometeorite particles, plus the recently announced commercial asteroid missions being planned.  Robots versus humans came up many times, Curt asked about the use of the ISS, prioritizing budgets, lunar basis, etc.  Doug called in regarding the incremental approach Dr. Damer had mentioned or as referred to in our discussion, stepping stones.

In the second segment, we talked about the designs on www.digitalspace.com and the Brody YouTube video per the above URL.  Also discussed was planetary protection with the use of the gravity tractor. We talked about needed lead times to interfere with a potentially dangerous NEO that might be headed for Earth,  then more questions came in about a lunar base and what Bruce thought to be more important, the lunar base, Mars, or the NEO mission.  Doug called in to discuss and challenge some of the mission planning ideas Bruce put forth, especially around trial and error, R&D, incremental development and long time lines.  Near the end, we talked about human spaceflight safety & the ideas put forth by Rand Simberg & others that we needed to take more risks, not make safety the extreme priority.  Bruce had many relevant & important comments on this subject.  Final comments focused on 50-100 years in th future with asteroid & other capabilities but only if we keep moving forward today.

Space Show programs can be quoted, but the quote must be cited or referenced using the proper citation format. Contact The Space Show for further information.  We welcomed Kimberly (Kim) Arcand and Megan Watzke to the program to discuss their new book, “Your Ticket To the Universe: A Guide To Exploring The Cosmos” published by Smithsonian Books.  Visit their website for more information our guests and this amazing book, www.yourtickettotheuniverse.com/Index/Home.html.  Also check out this YouTube video for the book, www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-KamC0Plro.  If you order the book using this Amazon URL, Amazon will make a contribution to The Space Show:  www.amazon.com/Your-Ticket-Universe-Exploring-Cosmos/dp/1588343758/ref=onegiantlea20.

During the first part of our 90 minute discussion, our guests explained why they wrote this book and how they came up with its unique structure, format & famous person quote at the beginning of each chapter.  We talked about the pictures used in the book and a few of the items that stood out to me including “Taking an Alien to a Baseball Game” which helps us understand visible light along with all of the other types of light.  A listener with a copy of the book emailed in to ask about the use of the terms light second, light minutes, and light hours when describing objects in our Solar System.  Their discussion of Pluto as a dwarf planet came up in addition to my talking about the book as an excellent teaching tool for school libraries, students of all ages, even adults.  Our authors talked about art and I noticed the inclusion of the famous painting Starry Night in the book.  Don’t miss what Kim and Megan had to say about why Starry Night was used in their book and the overall subject of art, space science, aesthetics, and the night sky abundant with stars.  As our segment was ending, we talked about Mars analogs here on Earth such as Svalbard and Rio Tinto among the many Earth Mars analogs referenced in this book, plus the book’s astrobiology focus.

In our second segment, I asked our guests if space exploration was worth it and why.  Don’t miss what each had to say in answering the question.  We talked about the NASA budget, what is accomplished with the budget, and general population misunderstandings about the actual amount of the NASA budget.  I mentioned a TV documentary on the Dutch East Indies Company and the necessity of human exploration.  I asked our guests what they thought our world would look like had we sent robots out instead of humans in those very early and risky exploration missions.  A listener asked about the description of the book as both a coffee table book and a science book, and we talked about that hybrid description.  Near the end of our discussion, I asked each guest for their favorite place mentioned in the book where they would want to hang out.  You might be surprised by their choices.  Both Kim and Megan signed off with excellent closing comments that you will want to hear and remember.

If you have comments/questions, please post them on The Space Show blog.  You can contact both guests through their website, Twitter, and Facebook, as well as through me.
