John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Robert (Bob) Zubrin to the program to discuss the NASA Road to Mars per the Evolvable Mars Campaign: Status Update as published Sept. 22, 2015 by NASA Spaceflight.com at www.nasaspaceflight.com/2015/09/sls-manifest-phobos-mars-2039. John and I asked Bob about parts of the plan including 41 SLS launches, cislunar development missions, a mission to Phobos and then finally in 2039 a Mars surface landing. Bob was highly critical of all stages of the plan. He also said it was the subject of a big debate at the recent Mars Society Conference. You can see the debate Dr. Zubrin referenced at www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oo4-ros2yEk&list=PLn0lnGc1SaimPHpRoH0XlwiCih-jYjC7F&index=11. Bob called the NASA plan absurd, was highly critical of plans to go to Phobos saying the science was at Mars, not on Phobos, plus he described orbital challenges and difficulties created by going to Phobos. Several times he said the plan was nothing more than a way to spend money on NASA projects. Near the end of the segment I asked Bob about the plan being sustainable and also leading to the settlement of Mars. You can imagine his response to my questions. In summary, he said a humans to Mars mission needs to be done from start to finish within the two terms of a president, not spread out over 25 years as is the case with the NASA Road to Mars program.

We welcomed back to the show Hannah Kerner for this 61 minute discussion about here recent space.com op-ed, “The Space Destination Debate Gets Us Nowhere…Literally.” You can read her op-ed at www.space.com/29659-debating-space-destination-is-grounding-exploration.html. Hannah is also the incoming new Executive Director of The Space Frontier Foundation (SFF) so we talked with about her ideas on space advocacy as well as SFF. We started out with a focus on the space destination debate which Hannah said was frustrating, not productive, and helped to create the situation where nobody goes anyplace. She also suggested that regardless of the destination, all space destinations benefit one another. The Stepping Stone Approach was discussed, especially in terms of what makes most sense from both the TRL and economic perspectives. Later in the segment, Hannah talked about the impact of the current go nowhere human spaceflight program on young people or millennials in school and entering the job market. This was a very interesting discussion from the millennial perspective so don’t miss it. As an example, our guest compared career options with NASA to those with companies such as Microsoft, Google, Apple, and other tech giants. We talked about their quick turnaround time with projects as compared to really long space projects, maybe up to a decade or more, with the risk of delays and even cancellation. Using the Europa mission as an example, I asked her how that would be viewed by a person in school wanting to do something important but seeing how long it would take plus the risks of delays or even project cancellation. She talked about devoting one’s career to a life long project like that and how that might be viewed by today’s students and graduates. For the balance of the program, we turned to The Space Frontier Foundation (SFF) and space advocacy in general. Hannah told us about an informal survey SFF conducted at the recent NewSpace Conference asking people how they viewed space players like Russia, China, India, the US, etc., either in terms of tension or innovation. She said 70% of those responding viewed participation by these players as spurring innovation, not adding to national or global tensions. The Linda Billings Scientific American article came up and Hannah gave us a different perspective than we have been hearing. She did not think it was an attack on SFF but rather the author was not that well informed about the Foundation or NewSpace. We then talked about the changes in the Foundation and space advocacy in general, diversity which is improving, the increase of women in the movement, having access to advocacy organizations, ideas, and information. Hannah said the new breed of space entrepreneurs and advocates are not promoting space settlement and issues the way it was promoted in years past which is what Linda was describing. We talked about the diversity among the NewSpace attendees which is vastly improved from the past, especially with women and Asians. In this context, we discussed technology, space settlement, Manifest Destiny, and much more. Hannah indicated that this new group of advocates was looking to establish more collaborative space eco-systems. Listeners emailed Hannah about diversity issues and finding ways to involve more minorities in space advocacy. Space attorney Michael Listner called to talk about advocacy and related issues from his perspective which was different than what Hannah was describing. Don’t miss this discussion. Hannah left us with closing comments you will certainly want to hear.

We welcomed Dr. Frank Martin to the program to discus the NRC human spaceflight study along with all aspects of human spaceflight including various destinations and missions. During the first segment of our 1 hour 39 minute show, Dr. Martin introduced us to the NRC Pathways study which you can download for free by using Google. He suggested it was a dose of reality as well as optimism. He said the study was very clear in saying “show me the money” for those wanting to do humans to Mars missions now or fairly soon and then explained some of the high costs and trades involved in these missions. One of his overriding themes throughout our discussion was the need to manage a very large mass in LEO in order to accomplish the goals of long duration human space mission. During our segment, we kept coming back to the need to manage a large mass in LEO and how this translated to costs as well as the need for technology advancement. Both myself and listeners asked our guest about doing human missions cheaper by using the private sector. This subject kept coming up during both segments of the program. We also addressed the rational for human spaceflight. In addition, the issue of walking away from HSF was looked at for the US as a nation as that is an option. The report attempted to address this and related issues. Joe sent in an email about the mice on the ISS and using them to determine the gravity RX for HSF. He sent us several additional emails on this subject as well. This prompted comments about the need to use the ISS for research in support of long duration HSF missions. Dr. Martin said Mars was an horizon goal. In this context, he talked about only a few other possible destinations near us, either the Moon or an asteroid. He then proceeded to address the issue of managing the risk for a Mars mission. Beverly asked a budget question and taking the lead from the most recent Mike Griffin interview, she asked Frank if it really was just a choice to be constrained by budget issues. While Frank agreed it was a choice, he said there were very good ways and choices to spend taxpayer money so he did not see significantly more money for space in the future. Another listener talked about nuclear propulsion which also crossed into the second segment. Near the end of the first segment, we got a call from a New Zealand listener. During his call, the idea of the Buzz Aldrin Mars cycler came up and there was a question or two about fuel depots.
In the second segment, I asked Dr. Martin why the study took 18 months, then SLS John called the program. John wanted to talk nuclear propulsion thinking it would be a cost saver but what was not known was the accurate cost of the R&D program or the cost for jumping through political hurdles. John suggested a new administration would make a difference and I challenged that. I asked Frank given all his years of space industry experience if it was reasonable to expect big changes in space policy due to a change in administrations. Don’t miss Frank’s reply. Dwayne called back to question the HSF rational. One of the points made by Dwayne was that cooperation with the Russians on the ISS does not modify Russia’s behavior other than for space.

We welcomed back Dr. Doug Plata for this two hour two minute discussion. NOTE THAT THREE SUPPLEMENTAL DOCUMENTS FROM DOUG WILL BE UPLOADED TO THE BLOG. During the first segment, Doug introduced us to the topics he discussed at the recent ISDC conference in Los Angeles. He talked about SpaceX and both the Falcon 9 & Heavy, Lunar ice, hollow ice, a concept he calls Moon for Mars, and more. He also suggested that the Moon was not necessary for a Mars mission. Additionally, while he certainly support a return to the Moon, he does not believe bringing back the VSE and Constellation is the way to do it. I asked him how he got is interest in and start in space advocacy about 4 years ago. Doug told us an interesting story, including how he was influenced by the LCROSS mission. Michael Listner called to ask Doug about the WHY for the missions & projects he was advocating. This was an interesting discussion though Michael got cut off due to a glitch at his end. Tony wanted to know if Doug might be considering a start-up around his ideas in the near future. Other first segment topics included ISRU, what makes space sustainable, and gaining the public interest and trust. I asked him what among his ISDC topics was the least popular. Listen for the answer.
In the second segment, Doug said people could find the lunar cots petition at http://www.lunarcots.com. Doug addressed a question submitted by Tony regarding the use of water for radiation shielding. Doug corrected some misunderstandings from his previous comment & went through the calculations in support of his conclusions. We talked about a recent Mars One announcement for payloads for their planned 2018 mission. Doug talked lunar cots, telerobotics, & benefits which he had sent me on an earlier show. It is the three benefits documents that I will upload to the blog. Doug had more to say on LCROSS & its impact on him. He also told us about his newly made NASA HQ and commercial space contacts regarding lunar cots and cislunar. As the program was ending, he talked about doing a special Flagstaff conference next year with a media event at nearby Meteor Crater. Several times during our discussion, Doug cited Hops Blog for lunar and Mars lander/hopper ideas. See http://hopsblog-hop.blogspot.com.
Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog. You can reach Doug through me or his lunar cots page.

We welcomed Dennis Wingo back to the program to discuss his ideas as stated in his Space Ref Op-Ed of March 6, 2014, “The Path Forward In American Space-2014 Edition.” Check http://spaceref.com/the-path-forward-in-american-space—2014-edition.html. During the first segment of our 1 hour 46 minute discussion, Dennis began with a space program historical overview going back to JFK, James Webb, early space policy, and the FY 1966 peak NASA budget. He was making the case that budget problems are not the sole cause for problems in our space policy. Instead, government, NASA and policy makers are choosing programs to spend money on and space has shown a sharp decline in prioritization over a long period of time. Dennis talked about the three programs consuming large amounts of NASA’s budget but with strong congressional support: ISS, the James Webb Telescope, and SLS. He says we muddle along not having sufficient funds to do any of these project properly so he makes the case for SLS and & ISS working together to maximize the potential benefit of each program. When asked if the Russian political problems might be a game changer for Commercial Crew, he said it was possible but too early to tell. During this segment, Dennis elaborated on this idea with information, facts, and assumptions. He then shows how such a plan can produce practical benefits for the American people, a must in modern day space programs. He also talked about Silicon Valley and their investments in commercial space companies and what this means to the industry.
In the second segment, we talked about needed American public support and ways to influence policy makers, congressional leaders, etc. We also talked about the media, the specific science and space media, and problems with it. Dennis mentioned the upcoming comet flyby of Mars and its potential impact on people. Check out Comet Siding Spring. Dennis was asked for his action plan to help implement his idea, then he was asked for his thoughts on international participation and for his level of concern over the Chinese lunar program. He concluded saying that American citizens needed to see practical benefits from our space program, that inspiration, spinoffs, etc. had not worked all that well over the decades as space program drivers.
Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can contact Dennis directly or through me.

Welcome to our second Space Show guest audition program. During the first segment of our 1 hour 28 minute program, we fielded no calls from potential new Space Show guests but Doug called in from S. California for a lengthy discussion regarding the reasons for returning to the Moon and what may in his opinion be the best reason for the public to get excited about returning to the Moon with a settlement appeal. Doug was talking about couples & their possible flight schedules to the Moon, we talked about Mars One and that researchers have proposed all women crews as many believe they will do much better than men in long duration spaceflight. Doug then asked about how many people could identify the Moon walking astronauts as to how many could identify the cast of the old TV show, Gilligan’s Island. Everyone thought that more people would know the Gilligan’s cast than the Apollo astronauts. John Hunt then emailed in a comment that Gilligan’s Island had a theme song, suggesting the song made the difference. In honor of John’s “discovery,” I played the Gilligan theme song on air and challenged Doug and John to collaborate with one another on a Return to the Moon theme song. Doug also thought taking a dog as a pet (and a research subject) to the Moon would really interest the public. We had some fun talking about this topic but in the end, I expressed my skepticism and cynical nature regarding Doug’s five points with the general public and policy makers, and even the dog in space possibility though I am in support for traveling with my dog as listeners know since I have brought this up on many Space Show programs.
In the second segment, Marshall called in to talk about wanting to return as a guest to The Space Show regarding his ideas of lunar settlement. He talked about artificial gravity and possible nitrogen problems on the Moon. Marshall connected the possible nitrogen problems, even with ammonia on the Moon, to some of the issues Doug talked about during his call.
This audition program did not turn up as many potential new guests as the first audition show did but do keep in mind we are always interested in new guests, your suggestions, and recommendations. Self-invited guests need to call an Open Lines show to tell us what is on their mind and why they think they should be a Space Show guest. Please post comments/questions on The Space Show blog.
