We welcomed back Dr. Chris Impey for a one hour one segment discussion about his two recent books, “Dreams of Other Worlds: The Amazing Story of Unmanned Space Exploration,” and his newer book “Beyond: Our Future in Space.” We started our discussion with Dr. Impey describing “Dreams of Other Worlds” which describes 11 unmanned space missions that have made a difference in our understanding of distant worlds. We focused on a few of the 11 missions including Viking, Cassini, Voyager, & the WMAP mission. I asked Dr. Impey what would have been included had the book been written later. The Dawn Mission would have made it, so would the Kepler Space Telescope, New Horizons, Curiosity, and probably others. We then switched to the use of ground based telescopes and here Dr. Impey talked about how many of the telescopes are being repurposed for a new life doing different types of observation astronomy. Dr. Impey was asked about his favorite missions. He mentioned Viking and the WMAP microwave telescope mission and this led to his talking about The Big Bang, dark matter, and dark energy. I asked Chris about the recent article in The Economist about the two Chicago area scientists proposing a new theory on dark matter. Chris had read the article and had some interesting commentary on it and the proposed theory. Robert sent in an email asking our guest why there have been no life detection experiments on the NASA and other planetary missions. This sparked a good conversation on the subject which you do not want to miss. Chris proposed a very plausible reason why no suck experiments have been carried out but let us know what you think by posting on the blog. Another topic discussed was planetary protection. Linda from Austin asked our guest about the UofA astronomy and cosmology programs and students, then Bill asked our guest if he had read “The Martian” or seen the movie. Chris had both read the book and seen the movie which we discussed for several minutes. Don’t miss this discussion as Dr. Impey made some interesting points about both the book and the movie and the plausibility of the story line including the initial dust storm which caused the problems for The Martian. Before the end of the program, Chris fielded some questions about future missions. We addressed the Europa Clipper mission but he said many may be disappointed for what was not being included on the mission so again listen to what he had to say. He suggested a Titan mission would be interesting. In his book “Beyond” Our Future In Space,” Dr. Impey addressed the new commercial missions & human spaceflight. Chris guided us through all sorts of possibilities for future human spaceflight. Nuclear propulsion came up with Dr. Impey having much to say about how beneficial it would be if we had it though it was still futuristic. We spoke of advanced technology & the Decadal Survey and its impact on the type of science projects that get undertaken due to funding. Will sent in a note asking about the recent article about Elon Musk wanting to get to Mars in 10-15 years given the various risks Earth faced, including extremism. Dr. Impey also said it was probably unrealistic to think that one could have a $500k ticket price for Mars, another part of the Elon Musk article. Dr. Impey offered us good summary comments so don’t miss them. The last question dealt with a possible science backlash and referenced the following Huffington Post article: www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/solar-farm-suck-up-the-sun_566e9aeee4b0e292150e5d66.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can reach Dr. Impey through me or his University of Arizona faculty page.

We welcomed back Dr. Jim Woodward to the program to discuss the Mach Effect, Mach thrusters and drive, and breakthrough propulsion. During our discussion, Dr. Woodward mentioned his book, “Making Starships and Stargates which you can order at http://ssi.org/exotic-propulsion-initiative as this allows SSI to get a royalty payment on the sale of the book. If you buy the book through Amazon using TSS/OGLF portal, The Space Show gets a percentage of the sales price of the book. In addition, the Charles Platt article, “Strange thrust: the unproven science that could propel our children into space” can be found here: http://boingboing.net/2014/11/24/the-quest-for-a-reactionless-s.html. Finally, Dr. Woodward mentioned the paper written by Dr. Heidi Fearn, “New Theoretical Results for the Mach Effect Thruster.” You can download this paper at www.researchgate.net/publication/280134421_New_Theoretical_Results_for_the_Mach_Effect_Thruster. Note that in the final minutes of our program, Dr. Woodward spoke very softly and we were unable to get some of what he said as part of his final comments. While the 1 hour 56 minute program was divided into two segments, this summary will be in one segment only and short as the papers above tell the story. I urge you to read them and become familiar with Dr. Woodward’s work either before or after listening to this discussion which was at times very technical and heavy in the theoretical physics fields for gravitational forces, electromagnetic forces and more as he described the Mach Effect. In addition to the physics, since Dr. Woodward’s work is dependent on funding so he spent a good amount of time in both segments answering questions and telling us what it was like trying to get funding, approved proposals, etc. for cutting edge work or even work considered to be out of the box or on the fringe. His realistic assessment of the challenges posed by his and similar work goes to the point of why we don’t see more out of the box science & advanced projects being financed. In addition to the physics and funding discussions, we talked timelines for his having commercial uses for small Mach thrusters which would start off servicing satellites. This discussion covered both segments.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can contact Dr. Woodward through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com or his Cal State Fullerton website.

We welcomed back to the show Louise Riofrio to discuss her new book, “The Speed of Light.”  Remember that if you order this book through Amazon to use the OGLF Amazon portal so Amazon will make a contribution to TSS.  Instructions are on both The Space Show and our blog’s websites.  For more information, visit Riofrio’ s blog at http://riofriospacetime.blogsot.com. During the first segment of our 91 minute program, Louise told us about new developments and her work since her first Space Show appearance on Oct. 27, 2008.  She told her about her science work and related travels at JSC and her work with the moon rocks.  She also explained how her work with the moon rocks was important to human spaceflight, especially a return lunar mission and an asteroid mission.  She talked about why a lunar return mission was so important for science & why it was better to have astronauts on the mission rather than only robotic.  Out of this discussion came another SLS discussion as Louise pointed out the need for heavy lift for a lunar or any BLEO mission.  I explored her thoughts and opinions on SLS, asking her about the perspectives provided by those not supporting SLS.  In my opinion, Louise put forth excellent arguments in support of SLS during the show.  I even suggested she become the spokesperson for SLS and lunar return missions given how well she articulated and explained the need for SLS.  Louise also spoke about the distance from Earth to the Moon and the lunar orbit, referencing the LLRE (The Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment) from the Apollo era.  She used information from this device in comparison with three other measuring methods to support her theory that the speed of light is slowing down.  Listen to her explanation behind her theory assumptions.  Louise then mentioned the very accurate atomic clock soon to go up to the ISS, ACES (see http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Human_Spaceflight/Human_Spaceflight_Research/Atomic_Clock_Ensemble_in_Space_ACES).  She said this would be very helpful in detecting and clarifying the change in the speed of light.  John from Ft. Worth called with several questions and comments about the speed of light.   Next, Paul asked a series of email questions about time travel.

In the second segment, we started off discussing time travel and speed of light changes for a multi-generational human mission.  Louise introduced us to time dilation.  John in Montana asked about GPS timing & the change in the speed of light.   Christine emailed a question about an RTM mission and asked what might change if the speed of light is slowing down.  Next, we talked about Planck units and the equation GM=TC^3 which is the same as M=R=t.  Peer review was discussed as were the challenges of getting new theories introduced into the literature.  As you will hear, old ideas do not go lightly into the dark, so to speak.  Louise then talked about having discovered a lunar orbit anomaly and referenced her paper, “Calculating a Lunar Orbit Anomaly” which you can download at http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2013/pdf/2436.pdf.  As the program neared its end, I asked our guest about her idea that there might be a mini black hole in our sun.  Louise told us about her theory & talked in general about mini black holes.  Our last subject dealt with her interest in positive pressure suits for IVA purposes.

If you have comments/questions, please post them on TSS blog. You can reach Louise through her blog or me.

We welcomed back Eric Lerner for updates on his Focus Fusion work and then later, his work in cosmology as he challenges the Big Bang & expanding universe theories.  In the first segment of this 1 hour 40 minute show, we focused on fusion.  For more information, visit http://focusfusion.org.  Since much of this discussion involves physics, technical explanations, and more, referring to the website will be helpful.  Eric started out with an overview of focus fusion (Aneutronic Fusion).  He made clear their goal was to demonstrate the scientific feasibility of focus fusion.  Eric then described the challenges, possible solutions and progress being made in reaching their goal.  I suggest you review these website pages to help you understand what he talked about:  http://focusfusion.org/index.php/site/category/C36; http://focusfusion.org/index.php/site/category/C63; http://focusfusion.org/index.php/site/category/C70.  During this segment, Eric explained in detail the process, the physics, the science and more of what they do, have done, and still need to do.  We talked about pulse power, time sequences, the amount of power needed, and what has to happen to get more energy out than what they put into their reactor.  Marshall called to ask about computer power needed and simulations compared to actual experiments.  Eric also talked fuel options and then he talked about their financial needs.  He said they would soon be doing both a short movie and a Kickstarter program.  In fact, he made a call for volunteers so if you are interested, email him at eric@lphysics.com.  Questions came up about the safety of their work, then listeners asked how they contain such high temperatures, even if for a fraction of a second.  He talked about the need for using tungsten & we talked some about tungsten supplies and pricing.  Charles called in with several questions and comments about fuels and then about instead of using tungsten electrodes why not use boron or beryllium as the low atomic weight would contaminate the plasma less.  Charles & Eric has a very interesting discussion about these matters.  We then did a theoretical comparison of the potential cost of fusion energy with coal, natural gas & other conventional fuels.  Near the end of the segment, Eric was pressed for timelines to commercial breakeven if he had adequate funding.  Direct Energy Conversion was our last session topic.

In the second segment, Tim called to ask about fusion for space propulsion.  Next, Eric talked about cosmology as he said there was a debate about the Concordance Model which supports an expansive universe and The Big Bang Theory.  Eric challenges this and in this segment, provided support for his challenge to the Concordance Model of the Universe.  He also pointed out that his book on the topic is still in print so if you are interested, use the OGLF Amazon portal to buy “The Big Bang Never Happened.” OGLF portal instructions are in all program summary statements and blog archives.  You can also email me for help at drspace@thespaceshow.com.  Eric’s discussion of The Big Bang Theory and why he says it is likely incorrect was most interesting and I urge you to carefully listen to what he had to say about this & cosmology in general.  He also talked about how difficult it is to be published if you have a contrary theory and how peer review science flows to the status quo.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above.  You can contact Eric at his email address listed in this summary.

Space Show programs can be quoted, but the quote must be cited or referenced using the proper citation format. Contact The Space Show for further information.  We welcomed Kimberly (Kim) Arcand and Megan Watzke to the program to discuss their new book, “Your Ticket To the Universe: A Guide To Exploring The Cosmos” published by Smithsonian Books.  Visit their website for more information our guests and this amazing book, www.yourtickettotheuniverse.com/Index/Home.html.  Also check out this YouTube video for the book, www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-KamC0Plro.  If you order the book using this Amazon URL, Amazon will make a contribution to The Space Show:  www.amazon.com/Your-Ticket-Universe-Exploring-Cosmos/dp/1588343758/ref=onegiantlea20.

During the first part of our 90 minute discussion, our guests explained why they wrote this book and how they came up with its unique structure, format & famous person quote at the beginning of each chapter.  We talked about the pictures used in the book and a few of the items that stood out to me including “Taking an Alien to a Baseball Game” which helps us understand visible light along with all of the other types of light.  A listener with a copy of the book emailed in to ask about the use of the terms light second, light minutes, and light hours when describing objects in our Solar System.  Their discussion of Pluto as a dwarf planet came up in addition to my talking about the book as an excellent teaching tool for school libraries, students of all ages, even adults.  Our authors talked about art and I noticed the inclusion of the famous painting Starry Night in the book.  Don’t miss what Kim and Megan had to say about why Starry Night was used in their book and the overall subject of art, space science, aesthetics, and the night sky abundant with stars.  As our segment was ending, we talked about Mars analogs here on Earth such as Svalbard and Rio Tinto among the many Earth Mars analogs referenced in this book, plus the book’s astrobiology focus.

In our second segment, I asked our guests if space exploration was worth it and why.  Don’t miss what each had to say in answering the question.  We talked about the NASA budget, what is accomplished with the budget, and general population misunderstandings about the actual amount of the NASA budget.  I mentioned a TV documentary on the Dutch East Indies Company and the necessity of human exploration.  I asked our guests what they thought our world would look like had we sent robots out instead of humans in those very early and risky exploration missions.  A listener asked about the description of the book as both a coffee table book and a science book, and we talked about that hybrid description.  Near the end of our discussion, I asked each guest for their favorite place mentioned in the book where they would want to hang out.  You might be surprised by their choices.  Both Kim and Megan signed off with excellent closing comments that you will want to hear and remember.

If you have comments/questions, please post them on The Space Show blog.  You can contact both guests through their website, Twitter, and Facebook, as well as through me.

We welcomed back Dr. John Brandenburg for an interesting science fiction and physics discussion for 2 hours and 7 minutes.  We started our first segment with Dr. Brandenburg talking about the recent meteor impact on the Moon, parallels with the Shoemaker-Levy comet impact on Jupiter, and even referencing the Clementine Mission.  We then moved into John’s science fiction writing which he usually does under the name of Victor Norgarde.  However, his latest book project, a book that goes into the metaphysical realms and is titled “The Cosmic Jesus,” he uses his real name.  Based on his discussion of the book with us, I hope to feature it with John on future Space Show program.  Dr. Brandenburg then introduced us to the theories of Richard Feynman and John Wheeler and the impact of their work today.

In our second segment, Dr. Brandenburg talked about his GEM Tetra Unification Theory and the Higgs-Boson particle.  In this discussion, our guest did use a moderately heavy physics language citing several theories and the works of others such as Kaluza-Klein theory so stay with us as we talked about hidden dimensions, quantum mechanics, force fields, LENR & cold fusion, Mach’s Principle and much more.  John speculated on the Higgs being able to help us figure out how to reduce the mass of a spaceship so it could accelerate to the speed of light.  As you will hear, our caller John Hunt who is now in Ft. Worth rather than Atlanta talked with our guest about not impacting the inside of the spaceship and the occupants in reducing the mass of the spaceship.  At times, this was a very technical discussion.  Later in the segment, Sandra in Seattle emailed in asking our guest to assign himself to either traditional physics, the frontier of physics, or the lunatic fringe of physics.  This turned into a most interesting discussion about physics and each of the three classifications.  You guess where Dr. Brandenburg placed himself in terms of the three classification descriptors.  For most of the rest of the discussion, Dr. Brandenburg talked about physics, what it takes to get theories and ideas into the academic discussion and at some point accepted or at least seriously considered.  Another listener emailed him for conference suggestions since John said that it was important to go to conferences, publish, present, etc.  In Dr. Brandenburg’s closing remarks, he left us with a challenging question to consider!

Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog above.  You can email Dr. Brandenburg through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

Guest: Dr. John Brandenburg.  Topics:  We discussed his new book, the GEM Unification Theory, gravity, propulsion and more.  You are invited to comment, ask questions, and discuss the Space Show program/guest(s) on the Space Show blog, https://thespaceshow.wordpress.com.  Comments, questions, and any discussion must be relevant and applicable to Space Show programming. Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright.  The Space Show/OGLF is now engaged in its annual fundraising drive. Please check out our appeal at https://thespaceshow.wordpress.com/2011/11/21/space-show-2011-fundraising-campaign.  We welcomed Dr. John Brandenburg back to the program to discuss his new book, “Beyond Einstein’s Unified Field: Gravity & Electro-Magnetism Redefined.”  I urge you read his paper published in the Journal of Cosmology. “A Derivation of the Newton Gravitation Constant and the Proton Mass From The GEM Unification Theory of Baryo-Genesis” at http://journalofcosmology.com/JoC17pdfs/brandenburg2.pdf. Dr. Brandenburg & I have been friends for a very long time & our discussions are informal, sometimes meandering, & always great fun. At times this discussion was heavy into the physic so do bear with us.  In segment one, Dr. Brandenburg said that the GEM theory was a “theory of most stuff.”  He referred to the Gravitational Constant & the Planck Scale as well as the Middle Scale throughout the discussion. He provided the groundwork relating to Einstein and quantum mechanics, hidden dimensions, string theory, the 5th dimension, electro-magnetism & gravity theory.  He also referenced many times over the Kaluza-Klein theory & work by Sakharov.  An early question asked our guest to explain why there were different intensities of gravity on different planets.  Dr. Brandenburg talked about Big G, all matter being electromagnetic at the molecular level & ratios (with Earth)  used to predict the surface gravity of a planet made of rock.  In our second segment, Dr. Brandenburg went into more detail about his GEM theory which is also referred to as the Grandis et Medianis theory.  The Big Bang was discussed as well as what happened in the second before the Big Bang.  He also talked about string theory & its relationship to the GEM Theory.  A listener asked about the recent faster than light neutrino experiments. The experiment named OPERA was very simple & basic & most interesting.  In discussing this experiment & its results, he introduced us to tachyons which prompted a call from listener John in Atlanta & they spent some time discussing the physics of the GEM theory & what it might mean for propulsion.  To simplify this review, we now move forward to the need for portable fusion power & using gravity modification for space transportation.  While optimistic for gravity modification, Dr. Brandenburg was blunt in saying that without portable nuclear power, even with gravity modification, we would not leave the atmosphere & we would continue using big chemical rockets.  Don’t miss this discussion. We talked more about string theory & dimensions & then a listener asked about parallel dimensions.  Dr. Brandenburg had much to say on this topic as well. Near the end of our two hour discussion, I asked our guest about his next book & this opened up a different discussion line. Dr. Brandenburg is going to write about science, religion, the Middle East, Israel, ancient history, Greece, the Roman Empire & metaphysics before physics!  Look for him to be a guest on the show about this one.  We ended our show talking about thorium, thorium reactors, why thorium cannot be used for weapons, & natural nuclear events in Africa & on Mars which he discussed in detail when he was last on The Space Show.  Post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog URL above.  John can be emailed using brandenburgj@orbitec.com.
