We welcomed back Dr. Bruce Cordell for this 1 hour 38 minute discussion of Maslow Windows suggesting the strong possibility of a large & successful expansion of our space program by 2016, including a possible large space project on the order of Apollo or even the turn of the century Panama Canal.  To find out more about Maslow Windows, visit www.21stcenturywaves.com.

In preparation for this program, Dr. Cordell posted this on his site:  http://21stcenturywaves.com/2013/11/21/bruce-returns-to-the-space-show-on-december-6.  Make sure to click on the link for his article “10 Space Trends for 2013-Featuring the Approach of the New International Space Age.”  During our first segment, Dr. Cordell provided us with a brief introduction to Maslow Windows and the historical trends supporting this analysis.  He compared economic and financial times of past large government projects and expansions to our recent times and how we are now evolving towards a large expansion project as was the case many times over the past 200 years.  A key ingredient needed to bring about the changes Dr. Cordell spoke about is the emergency of economic growth and a national ebullient feeling, both of which are absent today.  He also said he was looking to the elections of 2014 and 2016 to produce substantial change, opening the door to the possibility pointed to by his Maslow Window analysis.  In response to one of my questions, Dr. Cordell was clear that change did not necessarily mean changing political parties.  Bruce received several questions from the NewSpace segment of the community, challenging the need for a large government space program and for SLS.  Bruce talked about this at length in both segments as listeners kept this as a front and center topic for the full program.  We also talked about the need for advances in technology to be ripe in order for the expanded space program to happen.  John from Ft. Worth called in with questions related to the Chinese program and Bruce connected dots in this conversation to his analysis.  Among the many things he said, it was clear the project being alluded to did not have to be American and could be Chinese. He also strongly advocated international participation.  We talked about Mars and going first to Phobos or Deimos, then he talked about the failed Phobos-Grunt mission.

We started the second segment with our guest pointing out similarities in JFK’s time to today, including Iran today and the Cuban Missile Crisis for JFK.  Bruce commented about huge changes going on around the world, including here in the U.S. with energy production.  Space education came up, there were lots of comments about our Congress, the administration and public disconnect over space.  This has to change for the Maslow Window to open up and produce the space expansion project.  He also talked about how we live in turbulent times and at least for now, the public and most in government do not have the stomach for the large Apollo like space project.  He said change would bring wealth creation, a better economy, and the people would soon be in a better position to want to do something like another Apollo.  Near the end, we talked about the ISS and its success.  In his concluding remarks, he pointed out that we live in scary times and that global changes were happening very fast.  This fast rate of change is a key predictors of the coming space boom.

We welcomed Dr. James (Jim) Hansen back to the program to discuss the biography of retired astronaut John Young which Dr. Hansen helped in writing.  The book, “Forever Young A Life Of Adventure in Air and Space,” is readily available at bookstores and Amazon. Remember, if you go through The Space Show/OGLF Amazon portal (instructions are on the blog, our website & the OGLF website), Amazon will make a contribution to The Space Show.  The first segment of our nearly two hour program, Dr. Hansen and I started out with an early aviation history overview as I asked our guest about the idea that in space we are as advanced today as was the DC-3 to where aviation is today.  This proved to be an interesting discussion, focusing not just on the DC-3 but NACA, the role of government in helping to develop advanced technologies and much more.  We then turned our attention John Young.  As you will hear, the book we are discussing was a biography written in first person and Jim was asked to help make it so.  We talked about Young’s focus on both astronaut safety and the NEO threat to Earth.  We talked about John Young both on Apollo and his shuttle flights.  The subject of space and aviation history came up again and we talked about the Enola Gay and what it took to display it at the Smithsonian as there was lots of opposition to doing so.  Dr. Hansen then returned to the John Young book, he told us about his suggestions to turn Young’s manuscript into a book & he described working with John and his wife on the project.  Space history was also a topic in this segment as we talked about historians and authors often having their work amended by later versions of the history.  Dr. Hansen cited some very famous examples when I said I wanted to rewrite my dissertation and correct my errors.

In the second segment, Jim was asked about John Young and Mars.  Jim said that John’s preference was returning to the Moon, plus his focus on his concern for NEOs hitting Earth.  But he did support being a multi-planet species.  We asked Jim about his preference or comparison of Apollo & the Saturn 5 to the shuttle.  Jim told us that John loved the shuttle and was fortunate to fly two shuttle missions.  Doug called in and wanted to know Jim’s perspective as a historian on the space frontier model common among space enthusiasts.  The frontier metaphor sparked quite the conversation with the three of us.  Dr. Hansen returned to talking about John Young’s interest in returning to the Moon and why.  Much was said in both segments about how shuttle should not have been cancelled nor should Constellation have been cancelled.  Ben emailed us about astronauts and role models and do they have a responsibility to us in being role models.  This also sparked an extensive conversation about astronauts, their role in society, what we make them into. Toward the end, Jim and I digressed into other areas of space, aviation, and political history.  We talked about the Cuban Missile Crisis, I cited memories of B 52’s at the ready at the Tulsa Municipal Airport, the remaining Moon Walker Astronauts, private sector lunar astronauts as a possibility before government astronauts return to the Moon, and digressions about Alabama, Oklahoma, and Jim’s next book about Robert Trent Jones and golf. Also in both segments, Dr. Hansen often referred to Neil Armstrong and his book about Neil which we discussed the last time Jim was our guest.

We welcomed back Dr. Bruce Cordell to discuss the ten major space trends for 2013 and the Maslow Window forecast for a coming period of ebullience, economic boom, and large space projects.  For more information, visit his website, www.21stcenturywaves.com.  His article titled “10 Space Trends for 2013 – Featuring the Approach of the New International Space Age can be found at http://21stcenturywaves.com/2013/02/13/state-of-the-wave-10-space-trends-for-2013-featuring-the-approach-of-the-new-international-space-age.  During the first half of our two hour discussion, Dr. Cordell took us through the history of his development of fractal Maslow Window forecasts, plus the historical data used to predict a Maslow Window.  After his introduction, we then talked about Mars and the excitement surrounding Mars with the Curiosity rover and the newly announced Inspiration Mars HSF mission Mars flyby per Dennis Tito.  Dr. Cordell spent considerable time connecting the dots for us to the importance of the Inspiration Mars mission & the coming predicted boom and period of ebullience.  Michael Listener called in to suggest the possibility of the government not providing a launch license for the Inspiration Mars launch.  This sparked an intense discussion regarding the likelihood of the government blocking such a mission.

In our second segment, Dr. Cordell talked about the space relationship to the war threats made North Korea and Iran.  Here, he connected the dots to the U.S. B2 Korean flyover and the Iranian and N. Korea threats to precursors that show up before the boom and period of ebullience.  He cited the Cuban Missile Crisis as an example prior to Apollo.  Again citing the precursors, he suggested that the “bumpy road” most always led to the boom period.  Several email listener questions came in regarding the U.S. & global economic condition & how it impacted his forecast.  Here, he referenced panics before each boom.  Bruce suggested we would be entering the period of ebullience around 2014 or 2015 but he also cited some reasons why the period could possibly be delayed, thus appearing much later.  But he definitely cited periods of financial panic as precursors to the boom periods.  He also talked about geopolitical events & their influence, including the role of conflicts.  Near the end of our program, he talked about the importance of the 2014 elections & our then had more to say about the Tito Mars flyby mission.

Guest:  Dr. Bruce Cordell.   Topics:  Maslow Windows and a coming economic and space exploration boom.  You are invited to comment, ask questions, and discuss the Space Show program/guest(s) on the Space Show blog, https://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments, questions, and any discussion must be relevant and applicable to Space Show programming. Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright. We welcomed back Dr. Bruce Cordell to discuss new information pertaining to fractal Maslow Windows, a possible coming economic and space exploration boom.  In our first segment of this 2 hour 15 minute program, Dr. Cordell provided us with an overview of his Maslow Windows research and conclusions.  As Dr. Cordell has been a guest on The Space Show several times, this particular overview is short so if you want more information on the history behind Maslow Windows and his research, please listen to the earlier discussions with our guest and visit his website, www.21stcenturywaves.com. We also talked about his presentation at this year’s Mars Society Conference.  You can follow along with this PowerPoint by visiting http://21stcenturywaves.com/2012/09/16/bruces-mars-society-convention-presentation-8312. After his overview, Dr. Cordell talked about earlier economic panics, comparing them to today, plus two other influencing factors, war/conflict, and a political realignment seeking prosperity.  During our discussion, Dr. Cordell makes the case that history is repeating itself and given current events including recent events in the Middle East, with our economy, and globally, it is very likely that around 2014-2015 we will be entering another Maslow Window opportunity for prosperity and a great exploration which he believes will be something to do with space exploration.  Several listeners called the program to ask him questions about his theory.  Some of the questions dealt with our present manufacturing & industrial capabilities as compared to the 60’s, global as well as domestic economic conditions & pressures, and human spaceflight risk assessment.
In our longer second segment, Doug was the first caller with questions about planetary missions around water, mission economics, and how this factored into the analysis Dr. Cordell was sharing with us. Bruce made a point of being specific that it was the history that was helping to predict the future, citing the numerous historical periods similar to the one we are in now and the great projects that followed including Apollo and the Panama Canal as examples. In this segment, he discusses many other relevant historical periods and examples as well.  I asked him how he knew that the great project being predicted would be in space rather than in something else.  You will find his response interesting but Jerry emailed in the idea that the great project could be The Bering Straights rail freight tunnel.  This sparked a bit of a discussion during the balance of the program.  Later in this segment, Bruce said he had looked at more than 200 years of our history.  He also suggested that if we miss the current Maslow Window coming up, history points to the next one happening around 2070.  During both segments, Dr. Cordell was asked about factors in our coming presidential election making a difference including education, culture, the media, and ultimately who gets elected.  We discussed Maslow Windows from the perspective of their helping to make a great leader rather than a great leader bringing about the window. Near the end of the program, Terry asked about our $16 trillion deficit. Don’t miss what Bruce had to say about this.  He also addressed cultural and media issues.
