We welcomed author Frank White back to the show to discuss the 3rd edition of “The Overview Effect” and a philosophy of space exploration.  Special pricing is available for the book at http://arc.aiaa.org/page/25for25sale.  During the first segment of our 93 minute program, Frank said that he had interviewed 29 astronauts plus three future astronauts.  He then talked about new interviews for the newly released 3rd edition of the book, highlighting interviews with Helen Sharman in the UK, Sandy Magnus, Akihiko Hoshide, Sir Richard Branson, George Whitesides & Loretta Hidalgo Whitesides among others.  He also spoke about his interview with Loren Acton.  One of the significant differences from the earlier editions was the focus on the New Astronauts.  One theme that was repeated during the show was based on the interview with Dr. Sandy Magnus and her comments about their being a difference in understanding the overview effect intellectually as compared to experiencing it.  This opened the door to listener emails about the type of communication among people who have experienced the overview effect with those who have not experienced it.  Later in the segment, Frank mentioned there was no philosophy of space exploration, suggesting that the overview effect might be able to create such a philosophy.  As the segment was ending, Marshall called to ask about gender differences as well as differences among engineers & those with other backgrounds.

In the second segment, we heard from Joey in the UK about the overview effect with Chinese and Russian taikonauts and cosmonauts.  Carl sent in a note to challenge the peace and harmony picture being presented by bringing up  today’s reality with a focus on those wanting to destroy others.  He did not think such groups would be particularly open to transitioning from their ideology to one supported by the overview effect.  Don’t miss Frank’s response to Carl.  Frank took a few minutes to talk about his Kindle book, “The New Camelot.”  The book looks into the King Arthur and Knights of the Roundtable story, suggesting that President Kennedy was Arthur sending out astronauts on a quest.  Like Arthur, JFK was hoping to unify the realm (so to speak).  This topic came up later in this segment in more detail.  We did talk about human spaceflight and global advocacy, commercial spaceflight, & the benefits of simulation for getting people to “get it” about the overview effect.  Listeners emailed Frank asking if overview effect training was being included in the many personal spaceflight training programs now available on the market.  Near the end, Frank talked about a possible 4th edition of his classic book.

We welcomed Jamie Guined to the show to discuss her new business start-up which is offering the first ever professional credential designed to provide fitness professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to support commercial spaceflight aerospace and the related medical team, the Spaceflight Fitness Specialist Credential (www.launch-fitness.com).  During the first segment of our 1 hour 32 minute program, Jamie talked about her exercise physiology and science background, some of the work she does in this and related fields at NASA JSC, and why she decided to set up this credentialed program.  Jamie spoke about the physical conditioning problems of the general public and chronic disease which largely goes unmanaged. She explained how this can show up in human spaceflight with the space tourists flights about to happen and the general public going to space rather than only well trained military and government astronauts.  In discussing the purpose and reach of her new program, our guest was asked if the program provided training for mental issues in an emergency. Here she referred to another guest from earlier this year who does have such a program. We learned that her credentialed program is for exercise fitness professionals, not the end user.  Listeners wanted to know if her credentialed program might be overkill for suborbital flights and I asked about applying the NASA information on exercise physiology, say with bone loss and osteoporosis, to the general public not interested in space but needing physical therapy or an exercise routine to mitigate bone issues.  Heather called in to ask Jamie what she thought the ideal attributes would be for the fitness expert seeking certification.  Doug called in to talk about FAA and DOT physical exams & adopting the information to lifestyle management medicine.  They talked about stress tests, counter measures, and centrifuge studies.

In the second segment, Jamie talked about her five year business plan and the need to understand the functional movement of the spaceflight candidate.  We spent some time talking about functional movement and body limitations.  We also learned that Jamie does screening for those interested in coming to Houston for a day or so to be evaluated.  We also talked about the specific of the credentialed program which will be made public shortly.  Its an online course with a year to complete and a written exam at the end of it.  Jamie pointed out the use of credible accreditation organizations for the certification, we talked about working with people outside the U.S. and any potential differences.  Jamie mentioned Americans as leading the pack in hypokinetic disorders.  Near the end, our guest was asked if the certification program had mitigation strategies for avoiding space sickness.  Jamie repeated that this was an emerging market and industry and she again explained why it was important for her to be the first to market.  As the show was about to end, Harriet asked Jamie about her consulting role with Mars One.

Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog. Jamie provided her email address in the second segment of the program or you can contact her through her website or me.

Dr. Bruce Cordell, Sunday, 9-16-12

Guest:  Dr. Bruce Cordell.   Topics:  Maslow Windows and a coming economic and space exploration boom.  You are invited to comment, ask questions, and discuss the Space Show program/guest(s) on the Space Show blog, https://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments, questions, and any discussion must be relevant and applicable to Space Show programming. Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright. We welcomed back Dr. Bruce Cordell to discuss new information pertaining to fractal Maslow Windows, a possible coming economic and space exploration boom.  In our first segment of this 2 hour 15 minute program, Dr. Cordell provided us with an overview of his Maslow Windows research and conclusions.  As Dr. Cordell has been a guest on The Space Show several times, this particular overview is short so if you want more information on the history behind Maslow Windows and his research, please listen to the earlier discussions with our guest and visit his website, www.21stcenturywaves.com. We also talked about his presentation at this year’s Mars Society Conference.  You can follow along with this PowerPoint by visiting http://21stcenturywaves.com/2012/09/16/bruces-mars-society-convention-presentation-8312. After his overview, Dr. Cordell talked about earlier economic panics, comparing them to today, plus two other influencing factors, war/conflict, and a political realignment seeking prosperity.  During our discussion, Dr. Cordell makes the case that history is repeating itself and given current events including recent events in the Middle East, with our economy, and globally, it is very likely that around 2014-2015 we will be entering another Maslow Window opportunity for prosperity and a great exploration which he believes will be something to do with space exploration.  Several listeners called the program to ask him questions about his theory.  Some of the questions dealt with our present manufacturing & industrial capabilities as compared to the 60’s, global as well as domestic economic conditions & pressures, and human spaceflight risk assessment.
In our longer second segment, Doug was the first caller with questions about planetary missions around water, mission economics, and how this factored into the analysis Dr. Cordell was sharing with us. Bruce made a point of being specific that it was the history that was helping to predict the future, citing the numerous historical periods similar to the one we are in now and the great projects that followed including Apollo and the Panama Canal as examples. In this segment, he discusses many other relevant historical periods and examples as well.  I asked him how he knew that the great project being predicted would be in space rather than in something else.  You will find his response interesting but Jerry emailed in the idea that the great project could be The Bering Straights rail freight tunnel.  This sparked a bit of a discussion during the balance of the program.  Later in this segment, Bruce said he had looked at more than 200 years of our history.  He also suggested that if we miss the current Maslow Window coming up, history points to the next one happening around 2070.  During both segments, Dr. Cordell was asked about factors in our coming presidential election making a difference including education, culture, the media, and ultimately who gets elected.  We discussed Maslow Windows from the perspective of their helping to make a great leader rather than a great leader bringing about the window. Near the end of the program, Terry asked about our $16 trillion deficit. Don’t miss what Bruce had to say about this.  He also addressed cultural and media issues.
