We welcomed Paul Turner to the show to discuss his new book “The Space Trade” and his concept for developing orbital real estate for profit. Visit his website for more information, http://www.thespacetrade.com.  In the first segment of our 1 hour 55 minute show, Paul introduced us to The Space Trade idea.  He first described what the mature space trade industry would look like, then he talked about how to develop a space trade.  He suggested the space trade would likely start with asteroid mining and he referenced Planetary Resources multiple times during our discussion.  He also mentioned the need for an orbital transfer vehicle and a spin ship which he described later in the discussion.  He talked about mining water and bring it back to LEO.  He recalled he had seen a suggested price for water at $50 million/ton in LEO which he said was on the Planetary Resources website at one time.  Later in the segment, this price was disputed by several listeners.  Listeners asked questions about the potential profitability of the space trade early stage since Paul thought it might not be profitable at the start.  Another early industry suggested by Paul was the servicing and refueling of satellites.  Joe then asked if a proof of concept could be applied to capturing small asteroids near Earth and bringing them back to Earth targeting their re-entry to land in Australia somewhere.  Paul said it was possible and it was important to have a proof of concept for people to see. John from Ft. Worth called to inquire about space manufacturing.  Paul had much to say about this part of his concept.

In the second segment, a listener asked about property rights and the national as well as international legal regime to make possible the space trade.  JP emailed in about manned vs. unmanned asteroid mining.  Benny asked Paul to describe a spin ship.  Later Robert inquired if lunar development might be the starting point for the space trade industry rather than asteroid mining. Listeners asked Paul many other questions including one about why establishing a space trade was important.  Paul referred us to chapter 12.1 of his book but he did mention a few of the reasons.  Later, he talked about the Carrington Event. I asked him what our TRL was for getting the space trade going and he said we could start today.  Don’t miss what he had to say about this.  In closing comments, he advocated doing something rather than just talking about it.  Pooley then called to talk about DIY space plus they discussed the old Conestoga project and JP emailed in on that as well.

Welcome to our Open Lines program.  The first segment of our 131 minute program opened with a technical glitch so you will hear some announcement repeats, etc.  We had a damaged wire connection that I did not pick up on until I got several email complaints.  I did start the program over again but you can tell we had a glitch listening to the opening of this program.  Prior to taking calls, I put out some suggested talking points including the recent Chinese ASAT test, the NewSpace 2014 conference, the Asteroids Act 2014, and the recently dismissed ULA petition to the SpaceX-Air Force litigation.  I also went over the upcoming Space Show schedule.  Our first caller was Doug from Australia who wanted to talk about his app for the iPhone and iPad, Leo-Low Earth Orbit.  Search for that title in the App store. You can find out more about his app, orbital dynamics and the uses for this app at http://leo-lowearthorbit.com.  For those of you wanting to try out the app but using a different platform for your smartphone, email Doug for assistance.  You can reach him through his website plus he gave out his email address on air.  Marshall called in to talk about the need to take on more risks for human spaceflight. He also talked about the RD-180 rocket motor.  John from Ft. Worth called in to give us his theory of ducking jury duty since I mentioned I had jury duty the end of the week and had to cancel the Friday show because of it.  When he got around to space, he wanted to know if the Aquarius paper had been uploaded to the SEI website per a recent Space Show discussion.  You can find the paper at http://www.spaceenterpriseinstitute.org/downloads.  As the segment ended, we started talking about artificial gravity and asking about the gravity RX needed for HSF plus other related issues.

In the second segment, I read an email from B John in Sweden who believes he has the answers to the human factors challenges and criticizes both space doctors and me for not recognizing his solutions and what he has said on a past show regarding known 17th century solutions for the human factors challenges.  I read his email in full, then promised him a guest appearance on The Space Show providing he bring credentials, facts, science, medicine, numbers, etc. to his discussion.  I said he could not do a Space Show program on this topic with only his hunch, his ideas, unfounded theories, ideology, & religion. He needs to come to the debate with facts.  You can hear more on this subject by listening to my reading of his emails on the July 22  program with Dr. Mark Shelhamer.  If he can support his theories, you will see his show listed on the website newsletter for coming attractions and in the weekly newsletter for the time and date of his interview.  Atty Michael Listner called in to talk about the Asteroids Bill 2014 in Congress which we discussed in detail.  Google Asteroids Bill 2014 and you can easily find it. It’s a very short read, about five pages.  We also talked about the SpaceX-Air Force litigation and the court dismissing the ULA petition though mandating negotiation talks between SpaceX and ULA.  Rick called in to talk about having won the Lightening Round at NewSpace.  The company, CubeCab (www.cubecab.com), intends to place specific cubesats in LEO one at a time. He talked about using air launch so check them out at their website.  Rick also told us that we could see the Newspace 2014 videos by going to http://www.youtube.com and searching for NewSpace 2014.  There you will see most of the talks and panel discussions from the conference.  You can email any of the guests for today’s show through me.

We welcomed both Sara Jennings and Aaron Oesterle to the show to discuss the upcoming NewSpace 2014 conference to be held at the Doubletree in San Jose, CA from July 24-26, 2014 in the heart of Silicon Valley.  This was a one hour conference promotion program leading off with Sara, the conference chairman for this year, introducing us to the conference and the first day events.  Follow the discussion with us at their website, https://newspace.spacefrontier.org.  Sara started with the Thursday agenda with a focus on investors, the Lightening Round Pitches, the welcome reception and the keynote later in the day by Art Dula.  Also on Thursday, we talked about the Awards Ceremony and near the end of the program, Sara and Aaron announced the winners of this year’s awards.  We had telephone glitches early in the program, first dropping the call with Sara, then with Aaron.  Also, both guests used cell phones which created a few audio issues early on with Aaron.  Aaron talked about the Friday program leading off with comments about the Do It Yourself (DIY) space movement which is growing rapidly.  Next up we discussed property rights and the planned focus of the panel plus the panel members.  On Friday, Andy Aldrin is the lunch speaker and our guests talked about Andy wanting to go to the Moon as did his Dad, Buzz.  Andy is now president of the Moon Express.   team.  Also on Friday, our guests highlighted the lunar panel along with the paradigm shift panel.  Saturday, the last day of the conference, our focus was on Donna Edwards as the lunch speaker, then the Gala Event.  Our guests pointed out that registration on Thursday and later will be at an increased price so if you are planning to attend, do the online registration prior to the conference first day.  We also talked about the Doubletree and the fact that is filling up so act quickly to get the conference rate.  Throughout our discussion, we focused on the great networking available throughout the three day event.  Doug even sent in an email to support the conference for its excellent networking.  In addition, listeners wanted to know if HSF and risk averseness was part of the program and Tony wanted to know about SSP being part of the program.  The conference will be live streamed.  Check back on the website for details. If you attend NewSpace, please track me down and say hello.

Post your comments/questions on TSS blog. Our guests can be reached at the conference website.
