We welcomed Doug Messier back to the program.  During the first segment of our nearly two hour show, Doug started off by telling about his current multi-part series running this past week on www.paraboloicarc.com regarding Virgin Galactic and SpaceShipTwo.  Given the accident happened slightly more than a year ago, Doug put together a comprehensive series of articles on the accident, the pilots, the NTSB report, Virgin Galactic, Scaled and more.  This is a multi-part series you will want to read.  The majority of the first segment’s discussion was based on the articles with questions from listeners and myself about various aspects of the company, the accident, the people involved, the mission control room, and the NTSB report plus supporting documents which Doug studied for his articles.  Listener Alec sent in an email before the show wanting to know if SS2 has been more closely modeled after SS! if the company would have been flying by now.  Doug had much to say in response to this question dealing with the expansion to SS2 which was 3 times larger than SS1 and more.  When asked about return to flight, Doug suggested the possibility of Feb. 2016 but that was not definite.  This was in response to Josh asking for a Virgin time line.  Doug also got questions about Virgin and Spaceport America, then he was asked if noticed differences in Virgin’s presentation both pre and post the accident.  The subject of safety and test flight programs came up for Virgin, XCOR and all the companies.  We talked about safety and test flight programs in general with Doug, myself and some listeners,  agreeing that the test programs were not extensive enough or sufficiently comprehensive.  Don’t miss this discussion which included comments about the flight test envelope challenges, the X-15 as a possible model, and comments made by Neil Armstrong at the recent Suborbital Conference held a few years ago in Palo Alto, CA.

In the second segment, I started out by asking Doug about the new Commercial Space Law agreed upon by the House and Senate, specifically the part about asteroid mining and quasi-property rights.  I pointed out the feedback I was getting about this section being in opposition to the Outer Space Treat and many were not happy with it, nor did we know if it would have any legal standing outside the U.S.  Tim called in to support the asteroid mining provisions in the law.  John from Ft. Worth called in to talk about the DARPA XS-1 program and Masten Space Sciences. Burton in Canada asked about SLS, then Dr. Lurio called in to talk safety and many other topics.  Before the show ended, Tim called back to ask about the XCOR piston pump progress.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above.  You can reach Doug through www.parabolicarc.com or me.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Doug Messier of Parabolicarc.com to discuss the NTSB Virgin Galactic accident investigation report. Doug summarized the report for us, addressed key findings mostly directed at Scaled Composites regarding the failure to anticipate pilot and human failure. He also explained the feather mechanism, how its early deployment caused SpaceShip2 to breakup and what the remedy is going to be for SpaceShip2 going forward. John asked Doug about ongoing safety issues with Virgin Galactic, we talked about planned timelines for the renewal of test flights leading to commercial flights, and that many still have doubts regarding the Virgin Galactic operation. Doug was also asked about reports that there was pressure from Branson on AST for experimental permits and cutting oversight corners which many claim allowed an unsafe spaceship to fly.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Jeff Foust for the first ten minutes of our special edition Hotel Mars program. Our second guest was Doug Messier for the second half of the program.  During the first segment with Dr. Foust, we talked about the latest news on the recent Orbital Sciences Antares rocket failure.  It seems that Orbital Sciences is going to phase out the AJ26 rocket motor, replace it with a yet unidentified motor, and possibly do some short term launches of cargo to the ISS on an alternative rocket.  In the second segment, Doug Messier of www.parabolicarc.com was our guest to discuss the latest news regarding the SpaceShipTwo accident.  Doug talked about the NTSB investigation and disclosure about the on-off switch for the vehicles feather system, we talked about Virgin Galactic safety and the type of data that was collected which will assist the NTSB in the investigation.

We welcomed Doug Messier back to the show to discuss featured news articles of late on his blog, http://www.parabolicarc.com.  Please note that Doug used a cell phone and we did have audio issues at various times during the show.  During the first long segment of our 1 hour 38 minute program, Doug talked about the Mojave Air &Spaceport, Stratolaunch and then Doug got called to task by listeners for his recent reporting & comments regarding Virgin Galactic per his blog, his recent Space Show program and his appearance on the Hotel Mars John Batchelor segment last week.  The gist of the hard questions asked Doug centered around asking him if he had a conflict of interest reporting on other companies given the XCOR book he is writing.  They asked this because to them, his reporting seemed unfair to Virgin while giving XCOR a pass on many of the same issues he talked about with Virgin.  We spent most of the first segment talking about these issues.  Doug spoke freely and talked about how he reports on these issues and why he reports the way he does.  He mentioned several Virgin stories as examples but he also made it very clear that he wants all the companies to be successful and for the industry to develop.  As you will see in the last segment, this particular type of question was asked of him as the program was drawing to a close.  Doug was in the hot seat for much of the first segment so you listen and you decide.  Let Doug know your thoughts on his Virgin reporting by posting on TSS blog or emailing him.  I then moved us to other topics & other companies at Mojave, the FAR for amateur rocketry, but the forces to be kept drawing us back to Doug, his Virgin reporting and XCOR comparisons.  Doug managed to talk about recent SFF and Space Access alerts about language in the Senate NASA funding bill that these organizations and others believe to be a poison pill.  Listen for details.  Also, I asked about Congress planning to fund at least $200 million for a new engine replacement for the RD-180.  We also talked about the Falcon 9 & AF SpaceX certification.  Dr. Doug called near the end of the segment.  During his call, he was sent an email question about the Moon by Tony in Seattle.

In the second segment, we talked about the NASA budget for FY 2015 in some detail.  Doug talked about SLS, Orion, commercial crew funding issues and SpaceX possibly expediting some flights prior to the 2017 schedule.  Doug went into detail about the Sen. Shelby amendment which many believe to be the poison pill mentioned in the first segment.  I took us through several of the top stories being reported on Parabolicarc.com including changes to the Arianne launcher, the Decelerator Flight Test, the NASA Centennial Challenge for Cubesat Deep Space, plus we talked about the Google acquisition of Skybox Imaging and their global broadband plans with Worldview.  Also mentioned as the show was drawing to a close was the GLXP, Doug’s visit to the Dragon V2 unveiling, & then Sally’s final email question asking Doug if he wanted Virgin Galactic to fail given how he reports on the company.  Don’t miss his response to Sally, plus my related comments.

Post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can reach Doug through his website or me.

We welcomed to Hotel Mars Doug Messier to discuss the latest news and developments with Virgin Galactic.  Doug talked about their engine issues their replacement with a nylon fuel motor.  He also talked about possibly reaching 50 miles rather than 62 miles.  John asked Doug about the upcoming science flights and passenger flights.  Doug commented about Branson and his sons going aboard SpaceShipTwo after the Virgin CEO flies first.  John seemed skeptical about Virgin throughout the discussion.   Doug also talked about the investment company from Abu Dhabi involved in Virgin to the tune of $390 million.

We welcomed back Doug Messier, Managing Editor of ParabolicArc.com for this 1 hour 43 minute discussion.  During our first segment, Doug talked about the proposed Google space program involving up to 1,600 satellites for global communication and wifi.  Doug shared with us as much information as was currently known regarding this program, plus he talked about the Loon Project and explained why he referred to the multiple satellite program as “Son of Teledesic.”  While no launch vehicle has been identified Doug and listeners did talk about the possible impact launch services needed for such a large program.  Doug also reported on Masten Space Systems. He also talked about Masten in the second segment.  Many listeners sent in emails about the proposed Google program, some expressing skepticism, some wanting more information.  Doug then turned his attention to Virgin Galactic and he talked about their powered test flights, engine issues, possible hybrid replacement engines, and more.  We talked about the signed up Virgin passengers and PR efforts to keep them informed of Virgin’s progress.  Doug also briefed us on XCOR and the Google Lunar XPrize contest.  A listener emailed in about the decline of the California aerospace industry and state regulatory issues.  Doug had much to say about this.  Before the break, a listener asked for an update on Stratolaunch.

In the second segment, Doug talked about the management changes at Virgin given three executives have left in recent times.  In addition, he said some of the lower level employees were sending out resumes.  In response to a question, he updated us on Virgin’s Launcher One.  We talked about Dream Chaser test flights, the name change at Dryden, & the NASA Ames name.  Near the end he gave us a brief report on Garvey Space, then Dr. Lurio called in and they discussed at length the Virgin hybrid engine issues, vehicle modifications, & the possibilities for a replacement engine.  Doug commented that they may not make it to 100KM!  As the program was ending, Doug said it would be an interesting year, that he thought there would be crewed vehicle flights later this year, and then he shared his thoughts regarding possible commercial crew downsizing. During this segment, I asked Doug to comment on his most exciting and frustrating stories of last year.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog. Doug can be reached through me or through ParabolicArc.com.

Guest:  Doug Messier.  Topics:  Spaceport America and Virgin Galactic informed consent, liability, & contract issues per www.parabolicarc.com & much more.  Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, https://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Space Show programs can be quoted, but the quote must be cited or referenced using the proper citation format. Contact The Space Show for further information.  We welcomed Doug Messier back to the program to discuss his reporting on Spaceport America and Virgin informed consent issues and possible contract issues.  We also talked to him about his management of Parabolic Arc, his possible expansion of the blog and even accepting guest contributors.  Check out his reporting and stories at www.parabolicarc.com. Our first subject was on Spaceport America and Virgin starting with Doug’s most recent post about possible Virgin rent payment disputes followed by the informed consent issues which may now have been resolved through negotiations with Virgin, the NM legislature, and NM trial attorneys.  We took listener calls and emails and as it turned out, the spaceport and Virgin story was controversial with listeners all over the board on these issues ranging from Charles who believes the spaceport and the industry are way ahead of their time to others who believe success will definitely prevail for the spaceport, Virgin and the industry.  Another issue discussed in the first segment was the hybrid rocket engine, possible Virgin problems with it, and related items. Doug shared his information with us on the subject and provided us with a brief history & overview on the hybrid engine.  We talked about powered test flights and the difficulty in doing these ventures given they always seem to be about two years away from operations.

In the second segment, Doug told us about activities at the Mojave Air and Space Port including the construction for Stratolaunch.  Somehow we ended up again discussing hybrid engines and informed consent.  Doug was asked about Virgin and XCOR differences and he spoke as much as he could about the Lynx but said he was under NDA with XCOR as he is working on an XCOR book.  He seemed to favor the XCOR approach.  We talked about his future plans for Parabolic Arc. He is thinking of broadening it to other areas and accepting guest contributions.  I asked him about his visits to see the ATK five segment SRB tests and his thoughts on solids, ATK, etc.  He had much to say about it and SLS.  He continued talking about Mojave, I asked him if he had ever seen the Orbital L1011 and he told us about his tour of it and hearing Bill Weaver speak about his SR-71 breakup and survival.  A listener asked him about Interorbital out of Mojave, we talked about Dream Chaser, and more.

If you have comments/questions for Doug, post them on The Space Show blog. You can email him through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.
