John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. William (Bill) Borucki back to the show to discuss the recently announced discovery of the small five planet system 11.2 billion years old, Kepler-444. This is approximately 2.5 times older than the Earth. We discussed the exoplanet search, rocky planets and their early formation, the surprises contained within the discovery of Kepler-444, and life detection in the habitable zone. As it turns out, the five small planets orbit their sun in 10 days so they are far too hot for life. However, Dr. Borucki did at one point during our discussion estimate the number of planetary candidates that were possible in the habitable zone. One can see Kepler-444 with binoculars so I asked our guest where to look to find it. He also said it was a triple star system! Among the surprises included the discover of dust and metal that early and the discovery that stars formed so very early at all.

Guest:  Open Lines with Dr. David Livingston.  Topics:  We discussed a wide range of space topics from Mars colonization to radiation issues, UFO files, the SpaceX-AF litigation, the Nixon space policy and much more.  Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, https://thespaceshow.wordpress.com.  Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. This will help me bring better programming to the audience.

Welcome to our Open Lines program.  During the first segment of our two hour seven minute program, we took several calls starting with John in Florida who wanted to talk about early Mars colonization, one way Mars trips and similar topics.  He wondered about buried Martian ruins deep under the ground and I drew an analogy to archaeological digs here on Earth in finding towns and early civilizations buried on top of one another far below the surface of the Earth.  John from Ft. Worth called in to talk about the Al Worden interview in which Al did not think there was any reason for returning to the Moon. You can read the Worden interview at http://www.dw.de/apollo-15-command-module-pilot-alfred-m-worden-nasa-took-a-step-backwards/a-18211468.  I also asked John about the release of thousands of UFO documents, http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2015/01/19/air-force-ufo-files/21985651.  John and I then returned to discuss more about the Worden interview, his comments on the shuttle, the ISS, Saturn V and more.

In the second segment, Michael Listner called to update us on the settlement of the SpaceX Air Force litigation.  Michael summarized the mediation and the settlement details for us.  Dr. Doug from S. California called to talk about a variety of topics including radiation.  He referred to an Al Globus article regarding his view on shielding requirements. You can read Al’s article here:  http://space.alglobus.net/papers/RadiationPaper2014.pdf.  Doug also talked about a permanent base on the Moon and his Mars Return Option.  Dwayne was the next caller and he spoke of John Logsdon’s upcoming book on Apollo and the Nixon space policy.  He talked about all the budget cuts and slashes back then and how they negatively impacted the program. Dwayne also talked about the nuclear thermal rocket and the fact that it can’t go active until it out of Earth orbit.  Adrian sent in an email about radiation debris putting satellites at risk.  Here is the older NY Times article he sent me:  http://www.nytimes.com/1995/02/26/world/radioactive-debris-in-space-threatens-satellites-in-use.html.  Tim called to debunk the Mars crew living in a tuna can analogy and instead wanted to compare it to submarines.  He got some pushback on his submarine analogy.  Earlier, Jon from NJ had sent in a note about the SpaceX satellite plans & what this may mean for SpaceX.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog.  You can reach any of the participants through me.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Ashwin Vasavada to Hotel Mars to discuss the latest findings announced by NASA in December 2013 regarding methane discoveries, organics in rocks, and indications that there had been flowing water on Mars, perhaps during the first billion years of Mars. As we learned, the first billion Martian years were likely to have been more supportive of microbial life than later times on Mars for a variety of reasons which our guest discussed during our 20 minute Hotel Mars segment. During our two part segment, we talked about free flowing water on Mars, the Mars methane as detected by Curiosity, and the organics found in Cumberland Rock. We asked Dr. Vasavada, the new Chief Scientist for MSL and Curiosity, many questions pertaining to these three end of the year 2013 NASA announcements and our guest guided us through the science, discoveries, plus he responded well to our inquiries. This is a Hotel Mars segment you will not want to miss! Note that the two parts of this segment are joined together as I eliminated the break.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Larry Price, Orion Deputy Program Manager, to Hotel Mars. During our 12 minute Hotel Mars segment, we talked about the successful EFT-1 test flight and recovery, how Orion is different from the Apollo capsule, the new heat shield, and Orion’s capabilities. We also talked about the planned initial Orion missions which will be in cislunar space, the Moon and even out to the lunar LaGrange point. Also discussed were planned Orion BLEO missions past the Moon. Given the proposed budget increase for Orion and SLS for FY 15, I asked Larry was if this increase could speed up readiness of Orion. Larry also talked about some of the flight test equipment and the type of data collected from both the flight and the return. We also talked about using UAV imaging for the return as well as the use of two Blackhawk helicopters. Near the end of the segment, Larry was asked about the possibility of Orion landing on land. While it can do that, the trades don’t typically support it as landing on water is more efficient. He explains why in our discussion. Near the end, John asked about Orion’s computer and its power.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Marc Millis (www.tauzero.aero) to discuss the movie “Interstellar,” worm holes, black holes, event horizons, folding space, advanced propulsion, and the realities of faster than light travel. We talked about some of the representations in the movie plus John also brought in some details from the older movie from the late 1990s, “Event Horizon.” Marc explained the theory behind worm holes, the need for massive amounts of negative energy, and the challenge in keeping the worm hole opening open once the starship has entered the worm hole. Also discussed were some of the liberties taken with science in representing science issues in the movie.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Anatoly Zak (http://russianspaceweb.com) to discuss reports that Russian plans to end its ISS participation in 2020. Mr. Zak cautioned us several times during our Hotel Mars segment that with Russia, there is a big difference in their rhetoric as compared to their reality. We also talked about the threat to leave the ISS as a negotiating ploy to remove or at least scale back the sanctions against the Russian government. Anatoly was asked if the station could be operated without the Russian control center and participation. He said no but that it might be possible to enter into a commercial type agreement with Russia to buy their operating services if they did pull out. Other issues discussed included the smaller replacement Russian space station, the Russian economy and their lunar plans along with the coming test flight of the Angara rocket. As the segment ended, I asked Anatoly if Russia had been following the news of the Antares and Virgin Galactic accidents. He said they follow rocket news closely but was unsure if VG was on their horizon.
