John Batchelor and I welcomed back Rand Simberg to discuss the recent Falcon 9 launch and barge landing attempt of the Falcon 9 first stage. In addition to discussing these events, we talked about the recent SpaceX statements about trying to land the first stage on land at either the Cape or Vandenberg. Rand talked about what would be needed to do that. Next, we talked about the recent press conference and release of information by ULA regarding their Vulcan rocket project and their plans to recover the first stage rocket motor. Rand also had much to say about the CEO at ULA and the different direction the company seems to be taking.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Anatoly Zak (http://russianspaceweb.com) to update us on the latest labor and work issues with the new Vostochny Cosmodrome, the new Vostochny airport, launch progress with the new Soyuz and Angara rockets, the launch timelines for later this year and then manned launches in 2018. We talked about the construction, labor issues, the needed infrastructure, the transportation challenges, the various launch pads needed, and more. Near the end of the segment, Anatoly updated us on the biological experiments that were on the Foton-M4 and the plans for the next round of these experiments including exposing living organisms to space radiation at very high altitudes.

We talked about Mars methane, nitrogen in the Martian soil, water on Mars, the use of lava tubes, Mars gravity, engineering Martian structures and more. John asked Dr. Benaroya for a timeline for going to and living on Mars. He suggested around the time range of 2075. He also said robots would go there first and pave the way for humans.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Doug Messier to discuss Mars One, Virgin Galactic and Launcher One. Mars One was up first, then John focused on Virgin Galactic. Doug talked about their recent job fair success in Long Beach, their new hanger for Launcher One and we talked about the small satellite launch business in general including the Air Force rail gun small satellite launcher, Super Strypi. John asked lots of questions about the viability of Mars One plus the small satellite launcher industry and the new participants developing this industry at a fast clip.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Michael Mumma to the show to discuss water and oceans throughout the solar system. We focused in on Mars oceans and where the water might have gone, plus we talked about sub-surface oceans on Enceladus, and oceans on Ganymede and Europa. We also talked about early in solar system history the trading ejecta with planets and other terrestrial bodies. I asked about similarities in solar system oceans to the oceans here on Earth, plus I asked if the oceans and bodies of water on these celestial bodies were similar in make-up to oceans on Earth. Our guest said there was no wind, waves, or tides but there was clear water movement. Also, the discovery of water and oceans was very puzzling in many locations. With the Dawn spacecraft now in orbit around Ceres, we also talked about water vapor and plumes on Ceres with more to come as Dawn gets closer and closer to the Ceres surface.

You can email Mr. Batchelor or Dr. Mumma through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Bill Harwood of CBS Space News to discuss the recent successful SpaceX Falcon 9 double satellite launch of two Boeing satellites that will use ion propulsion to get to their designated orbit over several months. Given the all electric propulsion for these satellites, the payload mass was significantly reduced so both satellites could be launched together resulting in dramatically reducing launch costs. In addition, we discussed the latest glitch with Mars Curiosity that may be a short somewhere in the system which showed up this past Saturday when the Curiosity drill was being used.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. William (Bill) Borucki back to the show to discuss the recently announced discovery of the small five planet system 11.2 billion years old, Kepler-444. This is approximately 2.5 times older than the Earth. We discussed the exoplanet search, rocky planets and their early formation, the surprises contained within the discovery of Kepler-444, and life detection in the habitable zone. As it turns out, the five small planets orbit their sun in 10 days so they are far too hot for life. However, Dr. Borucki did at one point during our discussion estimate the number of planetary candidates that were possible in the habitable zone. One can see Kepler-444 with binoculars so I asked our guest where to look to find it. He also said it was a triple star system! Among the surprises included the discover of dust and metal that early and the discovery that stars formed so very early at all.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog. You can email Mr. Batchelor or Dr. Borucki through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience.

Welcome to our Open Lines program.  During the first segment of our two hour seven minute program, we took several calls starting with John in Florida who wanted to talk about early Mars colonization, one way Mars trips and similar topics.  He wondered about buried Martian ruins deep under the ground and I drew an analogy to archaeological digs here on Earth in finding towns and early civilizations buried on top of one another far below the surface of the Earth.  John from Ft. Worth called in to talk about the Al Worden interview in which Al did not think there was any reason for returning to the Moon. You can read the Worden interview at http://www.dw.de/apollo-15-command-module-pilot-alfred-m-worden-nasa-took-a-step-backwards/a-18211468.  I also asked John about the release of thousands of UFO documents, http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2015/01/19/air-force-ufo-files/21985651.  John and I then returned to discuss more about the Worden interview, his comments on the shuttle, the ISS, Saturn V and more.

In the second segment, Michael Listner called to update us on the settlement of the SpaceX Air Force litigation.  Michael summarized the mediation and the settlement details for us.  Dr. Doug from S. California called to talk about a variety of topics including radiation.  He referred to an Al Globus article regarding his view on shielding requirements. You can read Al’s article here:  http://space.alglobus.net/papers/RadiationPaper2014.pdf.  Doug also talked about a permanent base on the Moon and his Mars Return Option.  Dwayne was the next caller and he spoke of John Logsdon’s upcoming book on Apollo and the Nixon space policy.  He talked about all the budget cuts and slashes back then and how they negatively impacted the program. Dwayne also talked about the nuclear thermal rocket and the fact that it can’t go active until it out of Earth orbit.  Adrian sent in an email about radiation debris putting satellites at risk.  Here is the older NY Times article he sent me:  http://www.nytimes.com/1995/02/26/world/radioactive-debris-in-space-threatens-satellites-in-use.html.  Tim called to debunk the Mars crew living in a tuna can analogy and instead wanted to compare it to submarines.  He got some pushback on his submarine analogy.  Earlier, Jon from NJ had sent in a note about the SpaceX satellite plans & what this may mean for SpaceX.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog.  You can reach any of the participants through me.
