We welcomed Dr. Gil Levin back to the show to discuss Mars new updates, the possibility of life on Mars, and news based on his Viking Labeled Release life detection experiments from the two Viking missions to Mars in 1976. During the first segment of our 93 minute show, Dr. Levin told us about three important announcements that have either happened or will happen. The first was is by the ISRO in India saying they would release their methane experiment data from their Mars orbiter on Oct. 1. We discussed the implications of Martian methane later in the program. The second announcement which will take place on Monday, Sept. 27 with an afternoon NASA press conference is expected to announce the confirmation of flowing water on Mars. All NASA will say is they are going to finally disclose answers about a significant Mars mystery that has finally been answered. The speculation all points to water. The third news announcement was that the Viking 1 landing site from 1976 has been selected by the appropriate NASA team as the first landing site for the Mars human mission. Dr. Levin spent most of the rest of the first segment talking about the Viking Labeled Release experiments, why the science continues to be rejected today and some theories behind the rejection. Some of this discussion followed us into the second segment. I asked Gil to describe what a modern life detection experiment would consist of and he went into that in some detail. Gil was asked if he believed in conspiracy theories. He did not want to go there but we did talk about them from time to time during the show. BJohn for example suggested NASA did not want to announce life on Mars for fear of planetary protection rules and policies stopping their humans to Mars program. We also talked about that being a possible stumbling bloc for wealthy private sector space entrepreneurs to launch their own life detection experiment because planetary protection rules would impact their plans just as they would NASA. The 25 year NASA Roadmap to Mars program came up and like many others, Dr. Levin did not think it was credible. We spent mor time discussing wealthy private sector people possibly funding their own Mars science and eventual human missions. Gil addressed methane on Mars in some detail and what finding it on Mars may mean for life detection. He was also asked if he could propose experiments for missions from other national space agencies. He said he could but then told how he was doing that for Russia in 1996 & then the mission was cancelled because the US blocked him from exporting and talking about Carbon 14. As the first segment ended, Gil identified scientists that had published credible research in support of life on Mars. Don’t miss what he had to say about the scientists, their work, and what happened when it was published.

In the second segment, Gil suggested that possibly his work was dismissed because he was an engineer, not a scientist. He talked about this possibility in some detail. I asked him to support his contention that life existed on Mars now. For a significant part of this segment, he listed experiment after experiment, solid evidence, some solid theory, all in support of and to back up his claims. It was a convincing impressive list so don’t miss this part of the discussion. Ben from Chicago challenged Gill with a few hard hitting questions about his work being dismissed. Essentially he asked Gil if he might just be dismissed because he is seen as an old, angry guy, fighting for his decades old experiment to be valid so his claims and efforts are pretty much dismissed for those reasons. Gil agreed with part of it and said he was looking and hoping for younger, more open minded researchers to take a fresh look at the data. We talked about open minded researchers, their organizations, and institutions for a good portion of this segment. As the show was nearing its end, we talked about NASA life detection experiments that flirted with detecting past or present live as compared to experiments designed to confirm once and for all life or no life. As the show was ending, BJohn asked why everyone was in such a hurry to do the life detection experiments given Mars was not going anywhere. I thought Gil gave a terrific answer to this question which also served as his conclusion to our discussion. Don’t miss his response to BJohn. Let us know what you think by posting your thoughts on the blog.

We welcomed Chris Carberry back to the show to discuss Explore Mars events & activities. During the first segment of our 96 minute program, Chris started out by telling us about the upcoming Humans2Mars Summit planned for May 5-7 in Washington, DC. All the conference and registration information is available at http://h2m.exploremars.org. This discussion led me to asking him why we should go to Mars and why now. As part of this discussion, I challenged Chris on using tax payer money for a Mars mission rather than letting the private sector do it. In fact, he did get a listener question about this, suggesting that either Mars One or SpaceX take us to Mars, not the government. Eric sent in a note asking who we thought might be the next NASA administrator or at least who the candidates might be. He also wanted Chris to advise how best to influence officials, policy makers, members of congress, etc. to go to Mars. Chris offered several suggestions to this part of Eric’s two question email. Chris responded to emails about the Affordable Mars Workshop architecture for Mars that we have been hearing about over the past week, plus the recent NSS-SFF meeting where settlement seemed to be the agreed upon goal. Don’t miss what Chris had to say about these events as he attended both. Doug called from S. California to make the case for going back to the Moon on its own, not just as a stepping stone to Mars. Doug suggested that the lunar return folks team with the Mars folks to find the best way to do both missions as it should not be one or the other. He also wanted to make sure going back to the Moon did not delay going to Mars and that going to Mars did not delay or destroy the opportunities for returning to the Moon. Chris and Doug had a vibrant exchange on this subject, especially given this era of tight budgets & constraints.

In the second segment, John from Ft. Worth called to express a concern that going to Mars might end up like Apollo and after a few Martian visits, we quit that too. Chris explained why he did not think that would happen. Later, Dr. Lurio called and said that “these guys are ALL living in fantasy land, one version or another.” His call was to pick up from the email he sent us and to elaborate on his position which was hotly debated and challenged by Chris. One thing Chris and Charles agreed upon was that there would be no repeat of a so-called “Kennedy Moment.” As the show was ending, Chris went over the Humans2Mars Summit again and we talked about the need to start working on Mars plans rather than always just talking and “planning” about them.

I believe the noise was outdoor wind noise at the callers location.

We welcomed back Chris Carberry, Executive Director of Explore Mars, to outline for us their Mars 2015 plans along with proposed political advocacy with the new Congress and upcoming 2016 presidential election.  In the first segment of our 96 minute discussion, Chris mentioned some of the highlight planned for Explore Mars for 2015 including their H2M Conference at GWU from May 5-7 plus he updated us on the ExoLance and their time capsule projects.  We talked about the political work needed and what Explore Mars was doing regarding this with the incoming congressional members and in preparing for the 2016 presidential race.  I asked Chris to tell how human spaceflight to Mars is presented to congressional members for the most impact and what the biggest objections were which he said focused on the budget.  He also suggested there was lots of political interest in human spaceflight to Mars.  Later we talked about Mars or the Moon, competing for funding and for priority status.  Marshall called with questions about needed energy for a human venture to Mars, focusing on either solar power or nuclear power.  The nuclear power part set up a more extensive discussion.  Chris responded to several emails about lunar water and should it be the Moon or Mars.  He was also asked about depots and their possible support of a humans to Mars mission.

In the second segment, Kirk called in for updates on ExoLance and he asked about a sustainable one way mission to Mars, particularly if public money was used for the mission. Chris thought we were far off from a publicly funded one way Martian mission.  Later, Chris talked about increased interest and talk about going to Mars and he mentioned several companies have plans for a humans to Mars mission.  Orion and SLS came up as well.  A 20 year time line was suggested for the Mars mission.  Toward the end of the discussion, Chris said their 2015 agenda was to continue focusing on building the Mars coalition, to start briefing presidential candidates in advance of the 2016 election, plus working with the new congress.  Toward the end of the show, Chris was asked about going to the moons of Mars instead of Mars.  Tim, our last caller, wanted to know about Red Dragon.
