During our 11 minute plus discussion, John, Gordon & I discussed the Chinese space program, their lunar lander Chang’e 3 and their lunar rover, Yutu (Jade Rabbit).  We talked about the science to be done by the rover, the high quality cameras in use, photos already taken of the landing site and of Earth and possible future aspects of the Chinese program.

During our 11 minute plus discussion, John, Leonard David, Gordon Chang & I discussed the recent Chinese Chang’e 3 launch to the Moon on Dec. 2, 2013.  We discussed the lunar orbiting of the spacecraft before its attempted landing at Sinus Iridum (Bay of Rainbows).  We talked about some of the complexities of a soft landing and the scientific instrument package on board. Of special interest was the autonomous hazard avoidance capability that even NASA has not yet tried on a spacecraft. Leonard was asked about the Chinese military in their space program and their overall plans for the Moon as part of their space program.  They do have a lunar sample return mission planned and their program is advancing.  Leonard talked about their rover, the mission, and suggested it was clearly a 21st century effort.

During our 11 minute plus discussion, John, Paul, Gordon, and I talked about the upcoming Chang’e 3 mission to land a lunar robotic probe on the Moon with a scheduled launch of Dec. 1, 2013.  Dr. Spudis described the instrument package, the proposed science to be done, the payload capabilities of the launcher setting the stage for future Chinese lunar missions, and the absence of an American lunar program.  Both John and Gordon expressed concern that the Chinese space program is part of their military and they asked several questions detailing their concern with China and a possible military space program.  I agreed with Paul when he said the biggest concern he had was the fact that the U.S. was not in the game, abdicating leadership to the Chinese and others.  We also talked about the power supply for the Chang’e 3 mission hardware and surviving the long and very cold lunar night using batteries.
