We welcomed Henry Kenyon to the show to discuss the subject of hybrid airships.  Mr. Kenyon wrote an article on this subject in the October issue of Aerospace America, a publication of AIAA. His article is titled “New life for an old hybrid (www.aerospaceamerica.org/Documents/Aerospace%20America%20PDFs%202015/October2015/AA_Oct2015.pdf.  Scroll down until you come to the article of interest).  In the first segment of our 85 minute program, Mr. Kenyon talked about modern airships, some of the differences from older style airships, plus he talked about different kinds of airships such as blimps, tethered vehicles, Dirigibles, Zeppelins and the hybrids, noting their differences from one to another.  Mr. Kenyon then talked about the Lockheed experimental P-791 airship which is discussed at length in his article.  He also has some very good pictures of the P-791 in the article.  He talked about its hover ability, how it works, size, speed and cargo capability.  We also learned that if fully loaded, it actually has to make a short take-off run to get off the ground.  Mr. Kenyon noted the military uses for a modern airship, then we talked about commercial uses but as you will hear, the commercial side of the project seems to still be emerging.  Henry was asked about UAVs as a competitor to airships.  We also talked about the recent Raytheon tethered vehicle that broke away from the tether due to high winds.  Our guest noted that the hybrid airship such as the experimental P-791 did not use a tether or mooring tower.  A listener asked our guest about cybersecurity given it was part of his bio that I read as I as I introduced today’s guest.  We had a short but very interesting discussion on cybersecurity issues which you will not want to miss.  Before the segment ended, we talked about the cargo capacity of the modern hybrid airship, comparing it to a large jet such as a C-130 or 747,  plus cargo transport times, cost overruns, and technical problems still needing to be resolved.

In the second segment, Henry told us the P-791 was on display at Palmdale, Ca.  I changed the subject and asked him based on his expertise and observations again from his bio, what type of programs were most likely to be cut or eliminated by congress.  You don’t want to miss his analysis on this subject.  Returning to airships, he was asked about the gas used for buoyancy.  This led to a listener questions about why helium over other gasses.  Our guest replied by talking about helium, hydrogen, and market concerns for helium as it is in limited supply since it is a naturally occurring element and not manmade.  Several listeners asked him about the commercial potential, include general delivery of Fed Exp or UPS type packages.  He explained the competition airships would face from existing low cost surface transportation options.  Before the show ended, listeners asked him about commercial business projects wanting to use airships for internet and communication platforms.  Adrian emailed in saying weather would destroy any real serious use of airships though our guest disagreed with Adrian.  Henry said with advanced weather radar and the speed of a modern airship, weather issues were not the same as with older airships that did not have radar or good weather forecasting services.  Henry said a modern airship could maneuver around a storm given their speeds and if they were grounded due to weather, much of aviation would probably be grounded as well.  Henry offered salient concluding comments you will want to hear.

We welcomed Doug Messier back to the show to discuss featured news articles of late on his blog, http://www.parabolicarc.com.  Please note that Doug used a cell phone and we did have audio issues at various times during the show.  During the first long segment of our 1 hour 38 minute program, Doug talked about the Mojave Air &Spaceport, Stratolaunch and then Doug got called to task by listeners for his recent reporting & comments regarding Virgin Galactic per his blog, his recent Space Show program and his appearance on the Hotel Mars John Batchelor segment last week.  The gist of the hard questions asked Doug centered around asking him if he had a conflict of interest reporting on other companies given the XCOR book he is writing.  They asked this because to them, his reporting seemed unfair to Virgin while giving XCOR a pass on many of the same issues he talked about with Virgin.  We spent most of the first segment talking about these issues.  Doug spoke freely and talked about how he reports on these issues and why he reports the way he does.  He mentioned several Virgin stories as examples but he also made it very clear that he wants all the companies to be successful and for the industry to develop.  As you will see in the last segment, this particular type of question was asked of him as the program was drawing to a close.  Doug was in the hot seat for much of the first segment so you listen and you decide.  Let Doug know your thoughts on his Virgin reporting by posting on TSS blog or emailing him.  I then moved us to other topics & other companies at Mojave, the FAR for amateur rocketry, but the forces to be kept drawing us back to Doug, his Virgin reporting and XCOR comparisons.  Doug managed to talk about recent SFF and Space Access alerts about language in the Senate NASA funding bill that these organizations and others believe to be a poison pill.  Listen for details.  Also, I asked about Congress planning to fund at least $200 million for a new engine replacement for the RD-180.  We also talked about the Falcon 9 & AF SpaceX certification.  Dr. Doug called near the end of the segment.  During his call, he was sent an email question about the Moon by Tony in Seattle.

In the second segment, we talked about the NASA budget for FY 2015 in some detail.  Doug talked about SLS, Orion, commercial crew funding issues and SpaceX possibly expediting some flights prior to the 2017 schedule.  Doug went into detail about the Sen. Shelby amendment which many believe to be the poison pill mentioned in the first segment.  I took us through several of the top stories being reported on Parabolicarc.com including changes to the Arianne launcher, the Decelerator Flight Test, the NASA Centennial Challenge for Cubesat Deep Space, plus we talked about the Google acquisition of Skybox Imaging and their global broadband plans with Worldview.  Also mentioned as the show was drawing to a close was the GLXP, Doug’s visit to the Dragon V2 unveiling, & then Sally’s final email question asking Doug if he wanted Virgin Galactic to fail given how he reports on the company.  Don’t miss his response to Sally, plus my related comments.

Cold Fusion/LENR

Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright.  We welcomed Dr. Edmund Storms to the program for a nearly two comprehensive discussion on LENR or as it is more commonly referred to, cold fusion.  Dr. Storms started us out with the history of cold fusion dating back to Pons and Fleischman on through to today.  He also explained why there is now a renewed interest in the field.  Jumping forward to today, Dr. Storms talked about Andrea Rossi and his E-Cat cold fusion device and demonstration, plus his special reactor units.  For more information, check out these sites: www.lenr.org, and the YouTube sites listed here:  www.lenr-canr.org/news.htm.  While Dr. Storms provided us with the basics, it was his response to listener questions and phone calls that allowed us to dig deeper into the potential of LENR.  Our program was devoted to exploring, understanding, and evaluating where the LENR field is today and what risks and challenges lie  ahead before the observed phenomena is understood and can be commercialized.  Dr. Storm talked about being able to replicate science but often in the early days when the research is not well understood, replication might be challenging.  He also talked about the difference with scientific observation of experiments and scientific replication.  Several of the listeners and callers went into detail with Dr. Storms. For example, John’s call from Atlanta inquired about quantum tunneling. Charles R. called in a few times with very technical questions, including asking about the Widom-Larsen Theory Portal (http://newenergytimes.com/v2/sr/WL/WLTheory.shtml#4step).  In the second segment, our friend Charles Pooley called in as a skeptic to debate cold fusion as being real, dismissing the observations and research across the board.  I know you will find this short “debate” interesting. Throughout the show, listeners wanted to know about the potential application and use of a Rossi device in the U.S., both in our homes or as part of the power supplied by utility companies.  We also talked about the broader uses for cold fusion in the less regulated third world.  In the second segment, our guest was asked about Andrea Rossi and his track record, plus his effort to commercialize, patent, and sell Rossi devices.  Later we talked about funding opportunities for LENR research, the lack of available funding from traditional sources such as NSF, and the paradigm shift required from traditionalists to realize that cold fusion may involve different processes from the well understood nuclear reaction process.  In fact, you will hear several listeners resist seeing this in a vastly different light and we talked about this during our program.  As you will hear, much research is needed to understand cold fusion and to validate its potential, especially its commercial potential.
