We welcomed Doug Messier back to the program.  During the first segment of our nearly two hour show, Doug started off by telling about his current multi-part series running this past week on www.paraboloicarc.com regarding Virgin Galactic and SpaceShipTwo.  Given the accident happened slightly more than a year ago, Doug put together a comprehensive series of articles on the accident, the pilots, the NTSB report, Virgin Galactic, Scaled and more.  This is a multi-part series you will want to read.  The majority of the first segment’s discussion was based on the articles with questions from listeners and myself about various aspects of the company, the accident, the people involved, the mission control room, and the NTSB report plus supporting documents which Doug studied for his articles.  Listener Alec sent in an email before the show wanting to know if SS2 has been more closely modeled after SS! if the company would have been flying by now.  Doug had much to say in response to this question dealing with the expansion to SS2 which was 3 times larger than SS1 and more.  When asked about return to flight, Doug suggested the possibility of Feb. 2016 but that was not definite.  This was in response to Josh asking for a Virgin time line.  Doug also got questions about Virgin and Spaceport America, then he was asked if noticed differences in Virgin’s presentation both pre and post the accident.  The subject of safety and test flight programs came up for Virgin, XCOR and all the companies.  We talked about safety and test flight programs in general with Doug, myself and some listeners,  agreeing that the test programs were not extensive enough or sufficiently comprehensive.  Don’t miss this discussion which included comments about the flight test envelope challenges, the X-15 as a possible model, and comments made by Neil Armstrong at the recent Suborbital Conference held a few years ago in Palo Alto, CA.

In the second segment, I started out by asking Doug about the new Commercial Space Law agreed upon by the House and Senate, specifically the part about asteroid mining and quasi-property rights.  I pointed out the feedback I was getting about this section being in opposition to the Outer Space Treat and many were not happy with it, nor did we know if it would have any legal standing outside the U.S.  Tim called in to support the asteroid mining provisions in the law.  John from Ft. Worth called in to talk about the DARPA XS-1 program and Masten Space Sciences. Burton in Canada asked about SLS, then Dr. Lurio called in to talk safety and many other topics.  Before the show ended, Tim called back to ask about the XCOR piston pump progress.

We welcomed Doug Messier of www.parabolicarc.com to the program to discuss Virgin Galactic and its hybrid engine problems.  Doug follows this issue closely and had much to say about their engine, testing program, powered flight tests, possible engine replacements and more.  He also talked about the role of Sir Richard Branson with Virgin and the possible commercial flight schedule for the company.

We welcomes Randa and Rod Milliron back for this 1 hour 36 minute discussion about their company, Interorbital Systems (IOS), rocket engine development and testing, and much more.  Visit their website at www.interorbital.com for more information and details of topics discussed today.  We started out by getting details about the IOS static engine test in Oct. 2012.  Our guests talked about the test and described their engine and the Neptune modular launch system.  Rod talked about using hypergolic propellants and why they chose to do so, plus our guests went over the capability of the Neptune rocket depending on how many modules and stages were used.  They also talked about adding a stage for the lunar lander as they are a GLXP participant.  We talked about the GLXP, getting secondary payload rides to the Moon or using a dedicated launcher such as the Neptune. Our guests described their plans for doing a sea launch and why, probably in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii.  They also talked about having spaceport launching capabilities as well.  Listeners asked about demo flights and time lines, plus suborbital test flights.  Another listener asked about the plans for Olav Zipser to jump from a rocket in light of the Red Bull success.  Wes from Tampa emailed in about suborbital flights offering a space view for sensor testing, retrieving payloads, & testing low gravity manufacturing/3D printing.  IOS suborbital flights are their test flights.  Our guests had much to say about these matters, especially retrievable payloads.  Blair emailed in about IOS due diligence, their launch track record, and their consumer sales.  We then talked about the IOS personal satellite TubeSat and CubeSat kits. Wes called in to talk about his positive experiences given he has purchased one of the kits.  I also asked Wes about his due diligence on IOS before buying the kit.  Listen to how our guests and Wes responded to this line of questioning.

In the second segment, I asked about engine test regulations & required permits for testing at Mojave.  Randa and Rod mentioned complying with ITAR because they have foreign sales of the personal satellite kits.  They also talked about a 4H group on the Utah Colorado border building a personal satellite and the educational outreach this involves with the Ute Native Americans and others.  The Millirons were asked about their being considered fringe by some in the space community.  Note what they said about this and about attending space conferences.  A question came in as to why they were not using a hybrid engine.  Rod had lots to say about hybrids, don’t miss his comments.  Our discussion concluded with a summary of their forthcoming rocket plans and development program.
