Welcome to our Open Lines show.  During our first segment of this 2 hour 20 minute program, we mostly talked about both the recent Antares rocket explosion a few seconds after launch and the Virgin Galactic SS2 accident resulting in the loss of one crew member.  After my opening statement about not engaging in accident speculation and my reading an op-ed by Dennis Wing on the accident titled “Thoughts on the SS2 Crash” (http://denniswingo.wordpress.com), we opened the lines for callers. Dr. Jurist called first to strongly urge against speculation.  Michael Listner called & updated us regarding the Air Force-SpaceX litigation, then Michael talked about the SS2 accident & to guard against speculation.  He did give us the relevant parts of the commercial space law pertaining to the Dept. of Transportation and FAA having regulatory oversight of the suborbital industry.  He cited 51 U.S.C. § 50903(c) & pointed out this paragraph:  “(c) SAFETY.-In carrying out the responsibilities under subsection (b), the Secretary shall encourage, facilitate, and promote the continuous improvement of the safety of launch vehicles designed to carry humans, and the Secretary may, consistent with this chapter, promulgate regulations to carry out this subsection.”  Dr. Rowe called and talked about cardiovascular risks for longer spaceflights as well as the problems associated with using pharmaceuticals in space.  Bill also addressed some space tourism issues.  During this segment, I read an anti-space tourism article from Wired.com which you will see on the Dennis Wingo Blog as Dennis commented on the Wired article.

In the second segment, Kirk called from Trinidad.  He mentioned the SR71 flight breakup with Bill Weaver and the loss of the other pilot, plus I asked questions about the interest in space in Trinidad.  Dr. Dwayne Day called next to resist speculation on the SS2 accident, plus he shared some of his experiences in accident investigation and how things progress as he was part of the Columbia investigation team.  We then talked about really bad network and cable news reporting on both the Antares rocket failure and the SS2 coverage.   Dwayne recently did a tour of SpaceX and ULA so he told us about each one and highlighted some of the differences that he saw regarding each company.  I think you will find this discussion very interesting.  Dwayne mentioned early commercial spaceflight history, problems, and setbacks as points of reference for us.  Tim called from Huntsville about the SS2 crash and the Russian engine used by Antares.  He wondered if the British Skylon space tourism vehicle would be an alternative.  SLS John was our final caller who again urged against speculation on the cause of the accident.  He mentioned risks to the space tourism industry and concluded saying what others have said and that is that rockets are a risky business no matter what.

Welcome to this 2 hour 11 minute Open Lines Show.  As we started our first segment, I made several announcements including the return to action for the Space Cynics blog.  This time we will be accepting guest editorials.  Watch for the guidelines/rules for guest editors and those submitting comments to the blog.  Once you see the guidelines/rules on the top blog menu bar, Space Cynics will be officially back. See http://spacecynic.wordpress.com.  I also talked about a recent NPR interview with the inventor of the Super Soaker water gun who just happens to be a top guy at JPL!  I’ll make an effort to invite this person to the show.  Our first caller was from Scott who wanted to talk about and promote his Droid platform app for orbital speed calculations.  If you are interested in downloading this app to your Droid device, search in Google Play for “Orbital Speed.”   Scott described his app and how it worked and since there was some history re the app and the Charles Pooley Microlaunchers book, that came up during the discussion.  This was probably the dominant topic in the first segment.  Pooley did call in regarding the app and the references to his book, but Charles, in addition to promoting Microlaunchers as he usually does, also spoke about himself as the SPACE Heretic.  You can read about this at the tiny URL goo.gl/vo7Ux7 (cut & paste to your browser or use the full URL http://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20140620023828-9942227-charles-pooley-heratic?_mSplash=1).  During this segment, we also talked briefly about hybrid rocket motors and specifically about escape velocity.  I read an email from B John in Sweden suggesting that going to the Moon or Mars was and is counterproductive for our HSF program.  I asked for listener comment but unfortunately this topic was not picked up by the listeners.  Perhaps some of you listening on archives will post a blog comment about B John’s ideas.

In the second segment, John Hunt called in to talk some more about escape velocity and the formulas for it.  He then asked a series of question about science and STEM education.  I shared what I knew about the topic but we were hoping for teachers or others involved in this field to call in with more information.  Perhaps those of you working in these fields can post some detailed comments in response to John’s questions on the blog.  We had several emails about American public participation for a better HSF policy and for influencing policy makers and Congress for space policy.  The email questions seemed to think some level of American public participation was needed but that the pressure in numbers was not there compared to non-space issues receiving funding.  Also, most thought that the next election was actually the focus of Congress so without the numbers and pressure pushing for this or that policy, other projects get priority funding.  John called back to talk about the need for competition and the lack of it.  Near the end, I read a series of emails with a space advocate saying those that disagreed with him on specific issues were wrong, uninformed, etc. I asked listeners what they thought of this my way or the highway space advocacy mindset.  John did talk about the upcoming NASA down select process and we both thought for sure SpaceX would be selected.  John then said NASA and the public program lacked vision but SpaceX had a vision.

We welcomed Robert Sackheim to the program to discuss NASA, commercial space, the current state of rocket propulsion and advancements in the field.  During our first segment of this 1 hour 47 minute discussion, Mr. Sackheim talked about his background and experience at TRW, NASA MSFC, and his current consulting.  I asked him several questions about the current state of rocket propulsion. Bob had much to say about this, focusing on chemical rocket propulsion, satellite propulsion, electric propulsion, and the need for nuclear propulsion.  He talked about booster rockets, various rocket stages and their propulsion, rocket engines, and even SRBs.  Several questions came in asking him if we had the current technology for HSF to Mars or even the Inspiration Mars flyby mission talked about so much in the recent press.  Listeners wanted to know if our current levels of propulsion were up to the task.  After a rather thorough propulsion discussions, Bob turned to commercial space, lowering total space mission costs, regulatory policy, and commercial spaceports.  He also talked about budget issues and raised the question a few times as to why ten NASA centers were needed given their often overlapping, competitive, and duplicate work.

In our second segment, commercial space took the lead with a discussion on public/private partnerships & the belief that Americans can do anything if we set our mind to it, including space travel.  Of course here the problem as we know lies in leadership and today it appears that leadership in space & other areas is sparse at best.   Bob then focused on geo satellites and the increasing development and capabilities applicable to cubesats.  HSF came up for discussion as did the robotic missions. You might be surprised by what our guest had to say about HSF.  Other issues in this segment included the lunar space elevator, the congressional and NASA track record in canceling ongoing projects & taking lessons from history, SSP, & ways to reform & move NASA forward.  Bob spoke about evolving toward the old NACA model.  I asked about the impact of space advocacy from his perspective given his leadership experience and past positions in leading organizations and projects.  We also asked him about space tourism and hybrid rocket engines. He had much to say about hybrids, don’t miss the discussion.  Bob talked about the Falcon rockets, testing including static fire tests, and SRBs as related to the Constellation project and safety.  Toward the end, our guest was asked about NewSpace, fuel depots, & cryo transfer.  For closing comments, he talked about commercial space being the way to go & the path to our space future.

Contact The Space Show for further information.  We welcomed Doug Messier back to the program to discuss his reporting on Spaceport America and Virgin informed consent issues and possible contract issues.  We also talked to him about his management of Parabolic Arc, his possible expansion of the blog and even accepting guest contributors.  Check out his reporting and stories at www.parabolicarc.com. Our first subject was on Spaceport America and Virgin starting with Doug’s most recent post about possible Virgin rent payment disputes followed by the informed consent issues which may now have been resolved through negotiations with Virgin, the NM legislature, and NM trial attorneys.  We took listener calls and emails and as it turned out, the spaceport and Virgin story was controversial with listeners all over the board on these issues ranging from Charles who believes the spaceport and the industry are way ahead of their time to others who believe success will definitely prevail for the spaceport, Virgin and the industry.  Another issue discussed in the first segment was the hybrid rocket engine, possible Virgin problems with it, and related items. Doug shared his information with us on the subject and provided us with a brief history & overview on the hybrid engine.  We talked about powered test flights and the difficulty in doing these ventures given they always seem to be about two years away from operations.

     In the second segment, Doug told us about activities at the Mojave Air and Space Port including the construction for Stratolaunch.  Somehow we ended up again discussing hybrid engines and informed consent.  Doug was asked about Virgin and XCOR differences and he spoke as much as he could about the Lynx but said he was under NDA with XCOR as he is working on an XCOR book.  He seemed to favor the XCOR approach.  We talked about his future plans for Parabolic Arc. He is thinking of broadening it to other areas and accepting guest contributions.  I asked him about his visits to see the ATK five segment SRB tests and his thoughts on solids, ATK, etc.  He had much to say about it and SLS.  He continued talking about Mojave, I asked him if he had ever seen the Orbital L1011 and he told us about his tour of it and hearing Bill Weaver speak about his SR-71 breakup and survival.  A listener asked him about Interorbital out of Mojave, we talked about Dream Chaser, and more.

Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright.  We welcomes Mark Sirangelo of Sierra Nevada Corp Space Systems to the program to discuss Dream Chaser, hybrid rocket motors, human spaceflight, space policy, budgets and more.  You can learn more about Dream Chaser at http://sncspace.com/space_exploration.php.  For those of you interested in learning more on the previous NASA HL-20 concept vehicle, visit www.nasa.gov/centers/langley/news/factsheets/HL-20.html.  We started our discussion by asking Mr. Sirangelo for a brief history and overview of Dream Chaser.  He talked about the lifting body design and the capabilities of a lifting body, including costs and reusability.  In response to questions he did say it was meant for LEO though later in the program he discussed the potential to scale Dream Chaser up if markets warranted it.  He was also asked to compare the Dream Chaser style of vehicle to a capsule.  Mark was asked about the choice of rocket, the Atlas V.  While he explained that choice, he also said Dream Chaser was rocket agnostic. Don’t miss his comments on the rocket question.  A listener asked him to clarify the current status with the SAA, the FAR, and a possible CCDEV 3 round of NASA support.  Mark said there would be a round three with a call for awards in February with winners announced later in the summer.  He talked about the companies going to the next level, the Critical Design Review (CDR) and what this means for NASA as well as the companies.  Mark talked about the switch back to the SAA but said at some point down the road, the FAR will likely be used, probably in the acquisition stage.  Again, you do not want to miss what he had to say on this important issue.  Yves from Canada asked about the launch abort system for Dream Chaser and its ability to land in places and the ocean instead of a designated runway.  We talked about test flights, the number of needed flights, and the view that testing is not based on the number of flights but on successfully completing the essential and needed testing/flight protocols.  In our second segment, Trent called from Australia and wanted to know more about the full history and struggles for Dream Chaser up to now.  This time around Mark provided us with a more comprehensive vehicle history.  We also talked quite a bit about the hybrid rocket motor so you will for sure want to hear this segment.  Mark was asked if the Dream Chaser hybrid was the same being used for the Virgin SS2 and he said essentially yes other than for size.  He was asked some more questions about his work on SS2 for Virgin but deferred those questions to Virgin .  Our guest received a few questions about the GAP, buying rides on the Soyuz, recent Soyuz issues, and speeding up the development of Dream Chaser.  Harry wanted to know about using Dream Chaser for various types of orbital space tourism, and much was said about certifying Dream Chaser as safe for human spaceflight.  Near the end, Robert wanted to know if Dream Chaser might be used for Point to Point travel.  John from Jersey City called to ask about multiple markets for Dream Chaser.  As our discussion was drawing to a close, our guest was asked about hypergolic fuels and reaction control systems and again about the thermal protection system.  Please post your comments/questions for Mark Sirangelo on The Space Show blog at the above URL.
