We welcomed Dr. Frank Martin to the program to discus the NRC human spaceflight study along with all aspects of human spaceflight including various destinations and missions.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 39 minute show, Dr. Martin introduced us to the NRC Pathways study which you can download for free by using Google.  He suggested it was a dose of reality as well as optimism.  He said the study was very clear in saying “show me the money” for those wanting to do humans to Mars missions now or fairly soon and then explained some of the high costs and trades involved in these missions.  One of his overriding themes throughout our discussion was the need to manage a very large mass in LEO in order to accomplish the goals of long duration human space mission.  During our segment, we kept coming back to the need to manage a large mass in LEO and how this translated to costs as well as the need for technology advancement.  Both myself and listeners asked our guest about doing human missions cheaper by using the private sector.  This subject kept coming up during both segments of the program.  We also addressed the rational for human spaceflight.  In addition, the issue of walking away from HSF was looked at for the US as a nation as that is an option. The report attempted to address this and related issues.   Joe sent in an email about the mice on the ISS and using them to determine the gravity RX for HSF.  He sent us several additional emails on this subject as well.  This prompted comments about the need to use the ISS for research in support of long duration HSF missions.  Dr. Martin said Mars was an horizon goal.  In this context, he talked about only a few other possible destinations near us, either the Moon or an asteroid.  He then proceeded to address the issue of managing the risk for a Mars mission.  Beverly asked a budget question and taking the lead from the most recent Mike Griffin interview, she asked Frank if it really was just a choice to be constrained by budget issues.  While Frank agreed it was a choice, he said there were very good ways and choices to spend taxpayer money so he did not see significantly more money for space in the future.  Another listener talked about nuclear propulsion which also crossed into the second segment.  Near the end of the first segment, we got a call from a New Zealand listener.  During his call, the idea of the Buzz Aldrin Mars cycler came up and there was a question or two about fuel depots.

In the second segment, I asked Dr. Martin why the study took 18 months, then SLS John called the program.  John wanted to talk nuclear propulsion thinking it would be a cost saver but what was not known was the accurate cost of the R&D program or the cost for jumping through political hurdles.  John suggested a new administration would make a difference and I challenged that.  I asked Frank given all his years of space industry experience if it was reasonable to expect big changes in space policy due to a change in administrations.  Don’t miss Frank’s reply.  Dwayne called back to question the HSF rational. One of the points made by Dwayne was that cooperation with the Russians on the ISS does not modify Russia’s behavior other than for space.

We welcomed Dr. David Brain of the NASA MAVEN Mission team to the program for a discussion about MAVEN and Mars science.  In the first segment of our 1 hour 22 minute program, Dr. Brain provided us with an overview of the MAVEN Mission which was launched on Nov. 18.  As we heard, it is on track for its orbital insertion around Mars on Sept. 22, 2014.  I asked Dr. Brain if he thought Mars orbits were getting crowded and also if he knew if there were traffic management issues in orbiting Mars.  We also talked about the Indian Mars mission, Mangalyaan, as it was launched a few days before MAVEN and will arrive shortly after MAVEN arrives at Mars.  Dr. Brain, in describing MAVEN, said it was going to answer two questions:  1) What happened to the atmosphere of Mars and 2) What happened to the water and where did it go?  We then talked about the absence of a Martian magnetic field but we learned that there are strongly magnetized rocks along the edges and such rocks are 10-20 times the magnetic strength of similar rocks on Earth.  Dr. Brain provided us with theories on this.  We extrapolated that it was possible for something similar to happen on Earth.  He also talked about magnetic fields, how one might generate a magnetic field on Mars & more.  This latter point was in reply to a listener question asking if terraforming included creating a Martian magnetic field.  Our next topic dealt with how these types of missions are developed, the hardware and scientific tool risk issues, the use of heritage hardware and instruments, program funding, and review panels.  Marshall called and talked about instrument redundancy, electronic improvements from mission to mission and more.  We also talked about sending data back to Earth using the Deep Space Network (DSN).  This brought up questions about private Mars missions using the DSN for their communications.

In the second segment, Doug called to ask how MAVEN was impacted by the government shutdown. Dave relayed the shutdown stories to us which were most interesting, especially since it went right up to the minute for possible mission delays of 18-24 months.  In fact, MAVEN did get an exemption from the shutdown but not because of its science.  It was exempted because of its function as a communications relay satellite.  Also in this segment, Dave responded to listener questions asking how the instruments are designed, tested, and protected for their trip to Mars so they would be sure to work.  Dave took us through the entire process for planning, designing, developing and testing hardware & operating components  over and over again.    This is a fascinating inside look at what is involved in a successful Mars, lunar, or planetary mission.  Doug then asked about methane on Mars and here Dave had much to say about competing methane theories and the latest findings from instruments on Mars including Curiosity.

Welcome to this 2 hour 2 minute Open Lines discussion.  Jeff was our first caller regarding propulsion, SLS, Orion, SRBs, ATK, advanced technology as compared to existing or old technology, composite materials, and much more.  I also asked him about sequestration in the defense side of space.  Todd sent an email to Jeff to inquire what he thought about the possibility of an SLS cancelation.  We talked about the possibility of canceling the SLS project due to economic issues with the government.  Jeff also spoke about XCOR, ULA, Rocketdyne, pumps, and lower cost options with NewSpace companies.  Charles Pooley called in to talk about the Indian Mars mission, the 4 stage PSLV rocket, and his forthcoming book due out before the end of the year.  Tim sent in a STEM article & he called so we talked about the article but both of us did not think much of the author’s comments on the subject.  Next up was Doug from Southern California regarding articles about Bigelow and Lunar Cots.  The use of SLS was discussed for commercial missions or public/private partnerships and I parted company from his analysis and conclusions.  The articles suggested by Doug included www.parabolicarc.com/2013/11/12/50647 and www.newspacejournal.com/2013/11/12/bigelow-report-calls-for-use-of-cots-model-for-cislunar-transportation.  As frequent listeners know, Doug is a strong advocate of lunar cots.  I also asked him what the profitable commercial mission would for lunar cots.  Mostly Doug talked about selling rides to NASA except with the SLS, they would be using a gov. vehicle. It’s an interesting discussion.  What do you think about the ideas we talked about?  Andrew from Tucson was our last caller and we learned he has been busy with precision tool and engineering for rocket parts.  We also talked about the need for cultural changes in the country and he talked specifics in this area, not with generalizations.  We also talked about astronomy, career paths, and telescopes.
