During our 11 minute plus discussion, John and I talked about the planned Mars 2020 advanced robotic mission to search for past and possibly current life on Mars. For full mission information, visit the JPL Mars 2020 website,   http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/m2020/mission/overview.  John talked about life evolving here on Earth over millions of years and extrapolated to possible similar patterns on Mars.  We talked about the planned mission science, the search for fossils showing ancient microbial life on Mars, plus we talked about mission funding issues and costs.

During our 11 minute plus discussion with Dr. Pal Brekke & John Batchelor, we discussed the current solar cycle 24, the Solar Max, sunspots, climate change, and the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).  Please note that John Batchelor spoke with Dr. Brekke in Norway via a cell phone so the audio is up to its usual quality.  Dr. Brekke explained the Northern Lights, answered many questions and then we connect our discussion to the current solar cycle, the issue of fewer sunspots at this time and why, plus what does it mean to see fewer sunspots.  Near the end of the segment, I asked Dr. Brekke about the impact of the double peak which is making the Solar Max quite different.

During our 11 minute plus discussion with Dr. Ed Stone & John Batchelor, we discussed the current status of the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft and their soon entry into interstellar space. Dr. Stone, who has been the Chief Scientist of the Voyager project since the beginning with the project development in 1972, then the launches in 1977, talked to us about the Voyager mission, the Golden Record onboard Voyager 1, the role of Dr. Sagan, and what it will mean when the spacecraft finally leaves the heliosphere and enters interstellar space.  We also talked about the rest of Voyager’s life after the power goes out for good around 2020.  When Voyager was launched in 1977, it was able to do a flyby of the giant gas planets in a special orbit that comes about once every 176 years.  This orbit also made it possible for Voyager to reach Neptune in just 12 years!  Also discussed were total Voyager 1 and 2 mission & development costs plus their annual operating costs which run around $5 million.

During our 11 minute plus discussion with William (Bill) Borucki, PI for the Kepler Space Telescope mission,  we talked about the Kepler problems including the gyros, stability wheels, power, solar pressure, and even Kepler related budget issues if the mission gets redefined as a result of the spacecraft problems now being worked on by a special Kepler team. Kepler is now in a safe mode, conserving power and no longer capturing new data.  It may take months to a few years to see if it can be repaired or if it can sustain a modified mission with other goals than planet finding.  We also talked about upcoming planet finding missions around our sun and elsewhere.  One, TESS, is due to launch around 2017.  The other, TPF, is due to launch in the mid 2020’s.  Our guest said that there is about 18 to 24 months of data still in the pipeline awaiting analysis. For sure Kepler is not through just yet!

During our 11 minute plus discussion with William (Bill) Harwood, CBS space news space reporter at the Cape, we discussed the recent ISS problems with the ammonia cooling loop and the space walk repairs, the new problems with the Kepler Space Telescope which may suggest an ending of this marvelous planet finding tool, and the ULA Atlas 5 GPS launch.  I also asked Bill to compare an Atlas 5 launch to a Falcon 9 launch.  As our discussion was ending, John asked Bill if he thought NASA was becoming more accepting of private space and commercial crew efforts.  Bill talked about this for a few minutes, summarizing with his take of the NASA mood as a result of challenges facing the organization.
