John Batchelor and I did a quick 2015 year in review. We both agreed that the latest Falcon 9 launch by SpaceX was a potential game changer with the success of their flyback booster landing upright at the Cape. We also talked about the rest of this particular SpaceX mission which was just as impressive. For planetary science, we selected several mission for our 2015 best including New Horizons, Dawn, Akatsuki which started orbiting Venus after being lost for five years, and the Japanese Hayabusa 1 and 2 missions,. We commented that we were disappointed in the suborbital industry progress other than for Blue Origin and their recent successful test flight with their rocket return to the pad. John liked the European Rosetta Mission for Comet 67P and specifically the Philae lander. We summarized our short discussion by wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, plus we look forward to 2016 being another exciting year for space.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Jeff Coughlin to discuss the recent announcements about the false positives for finding exoplanets regarding the Kepler mission. False positives for identifying exoplanets regarding large bodies is upwards of 52%. Our guest discussed why this was so and why the discovery of the false positive rate for large objects was not a big surprise. False positives for smaller exoplanets is not nearly as high as for the large bodies. Dr. Coughlin talked about the process used to confirm that an object is an exoplanet rather than something else. The process involves the use of ground based observations, the study of brightness of the object, and much more. He talked about how the James Webb Space Telescope will make it easier to detect exoplanets from something else though the use of Hubble is not that applicable given how hard it is to get time on Hubble and the cost of using Hubble. Dr. Coughlin suggested that finding an Earth-like exoplanet with an oxygen and nitrogen atmosphere is certainly possible within “our” lifetime and he said he was optimistic about finding such a discovery.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Anatoly Zak (see www.russianspaceweb.com) to update us on the Russian space program and new Russian defense projects making use of satellites and space. Our discussion topics included the antisatellite missile test known as NUDOL, the Heads-up satellite early warning system to detect incoming ICBMs and other weapons on a global basis, the new space complex, Baiterek, plus the proposed joint European and Russian lunar mission to start lunar settlement, scheduled for approximately 2029. Anatoly had much to say about these developments, including expressing his opinion as to the long term sustainability of the project or the potential impact of the project, especially on the defense side.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Dr. Charles Lurio to discuss the suborbital space industry and in particular, Blue Origin. Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin is building the New Shepard suborbital spacecraft which recently flew to 100 km, returned to the pad & landed vertically demonstrating reusability for the first time for a launch vehicle returning from space. Dr. Lurio, John and I discussed the flight, its significance and then John wanted to compare this success to the efforts of SpaceX to land the first stage of the Falcon 9 on a barge in the Atlantic. Both Dr. Lurio and I explained the differences and the challenges faced by SpaceX as they were very different than the challenges faced by Blue Origin. John wanted to know if NASA or other national space agencies were working on reusability. Charles said no with specific comments about NASA. We also talked about the animated part of the Blue Origin video which can be seen at www.blueorigin.com. I also asked Charles about the vehicle plan to go to and from space with passengers on an automatic basis without a pilot or crew.

You can email Mr. Batchelor or D r. Charles Lurio through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com. You can get more information about Dr. Lurio at www.thelurioreport.com.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Michael Listner, space attorney, to discuss the recently passed Commercial Space Law by Congress. This law included a section on asteroid mining that may be an effort to convey to US citizens space property rights. Property rights are not permitted by the UN treaties and Michael said that the new law was sufficiently vague between conveying a property right as opposed to a use right which is allowed in the treaty. Michael and others believe it conflicts with the treaty but many within the industry and space enthusiasts believe this is important as it sets a baseline to improve upon in terms of property rights for the future. Michael also suggested it might be good for the asteroid mining companies as they can show their investors that there is now a basis in law which might help with getting new investment. I asked Michael if international space players would care about this or if it the provisions were enforceable outside the US. Michael suggested they would care because it granted these “rights” only to US citizens and they would likely object to it. John made several references to pirates and corporate plunder but I did not agree with those descriptions. What do you think? Let us know on the blog.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Dr. David Brain who is part of the NASA MAVEN team to discuss the recent findings regarding the solar wind as causing the loss of the Martian atmosphere over billions of years. Dr. Brain discussed the findings for the Martian upper atmosphere, he explained the solar wind, the channel which most of the atmosphere seemed to use to disappear, plus he talked about the various stages and ages of the geologic history of Mars. We talked about the conditions needed for surface water, the early Martian history and its cooling which would cause it to lose its magnetic field in the first place. John asked several questions comparing the early history of Mars with Earth, especially regarding magnetic fields, the magnetosphere and shielding from the solar wind. I asked Dr. Brain to explain the solar wind so we would all know what the solar wind is and how it fluctuates. This is an information packed 11-12 minutes, don’t miss it.

We also talked about other locations for water on Mars including ice which could be converted to rocket fuel were there sufficient energy available for such a conversion by those on Mars wanting the fuel. Dr. Vasavada explained the liquid flowing water and answered questions about the Martian atmosphere. We also talked about Curiosity and its examination of the early Martian climate history through its work in Gale Crater. We talked about the possibility of finding signs of life. With respect to this question, our guest said that the odds for finding signs of life are improving all the time. They odds “keep going up.”

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Dr. Curt Niebur, NASAs program scientist for Cassini, to update us on the close flyby of Enceladus, one of Saturn’s moons. The flyby was 30 miles above the moon’s surface and took place approximately 10AM PDT Oct. 28, 2015. Cassini flew through the south pole plumes or seafloor vents of expelled water given that it is believed that Enceladus has an under the ice ocean. The flyby will be able to tell the nature and content of ocean plus much more, including the possible detection of organics. Dr. Niebur also described the north pole area since it was viewed for the first time in recent weeks, revealing a very cracked and crevice filled area. Our guest was asked about the Cassini instruments used to gather the information as it flew through the plumes and we learned that two instruments had to be recalculated to do this mission. Another topic briefly discussed was the use of nuclear power for this mission and why solar power would not have worked. Don’t miss what our guest had to say about this and more regarding Cassini and this strange moon of Saturn.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Dr. Marc Rayman for important news and discovery update information on Ceres and the Dawn Mission. Some of the topics we discussed included the latest on impacts and accumulation of debris over millions of years making Ceres into a sort of sponge for impact material. We also discussed the latest theories on the bright spots, including the possibility of salt and what that may mean for Ceres development and science. I asked Marc general science questions and what it would take to have definitive answers to many of the Ceres mysteries. Near the end, John talked about Vesta and how it might compare to Earth in contrast to how Ceres might compare to Earth.
