John Batchelor and I welcomed back Doug Messier to discuss Mars One, Virgin Galactic and Launcher One. Mars One was up first, then John focused on Virgin Galactic. Doug talked about their recent job fair success in Long Beach, their new hanger for Launcher One and we talked about the small satellite launch business in general including the Air Force rail gun small satellite launcher, Super Strypi. John asked lots of questions about the viability of Mars One plus the small satellite launcher industry and the new participants developing this industry at a fast clip.

You can email Mr. Batchelor or Doug Messier through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com. Doug can also be reached through his excellent website, Parabolic Arc.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Michael Mumma to the show to discuss water and oceans throughout the solar system. We focused in on Mars oceans and where the water might have gone, plus we talked about sub-surface oceans on Enceladus, and oceans on Ganymede and Europa. We also talked about early in solar system history the trading ejecta with planets and other terrestrial bodies. I asked about similarities in solar system oceans to the oceans here on Earth, plus I asked if the oceans and bodies of water on these celestial bodies were similar in make-up to oceans on Earth. Our guest said there was no wind, waves, or tides but there was clear water movement. Also, the discovery of water and oceans was very puzzling in many locations. With the Dawn spacecraft now in orbit around Ceres, we also talked about water vapor and plumes on Ceres with more to come as Dawn gets closer and closer to the Ceres surface.

You can email Mr. Batchelor or Dr. Mumma through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Bruce Jakosky, the Maven Mission PI, to discuss the mysterious Martin plumes, the Martian atmosphere, and the Maven mission. As you will hear, the plumes are a real mystery with very mysterious characteristics. The scientists studying the plumes are puzzled and you will hear why as you listen to Dr. Jakosky. We also asked Dr. Jakosky about the Maven Mission and some questions about what happened to the water on Mars along with Martian atmosphere questions.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Bill Harwood of CBS Space News to discuss the recent successful SpaceX Falcon 9 double satellite launch of two Boeing satellites that will use ion propulsion to get to their designated orbit over several months. Given the all electric propulsion for these satellites, the payload mass was significantly reduced so both satellites could be launched together resulting in dramatically reducing launch costs. In addition, we discussed the latest glitch with Mars Curiosity that may be a short somewhere in the system which showed up this past Saturday when the Curiosity drill was being used.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. William (Bill) Borucki back to the show to discuss the recently announced discovery of the small five planet system 11.2 billion years old, Kepler-444. This is approximately 2.5 times older than the Earth. We discussed the exoplanet search, rocky planets and their early formation, the surprises contained within the discovery of Kepler-444, and life detection in the habitable zone. As it turns out, the five small planets orbit their sun in 10 days so they are far too hot for life. However, Dr. Borucki did at one point during our discussion estimate the number of planetary candidates that were possible in the habitable zone. One can see Kepler-444 with binoculars so I asked our guest where to look to find it. He also said it was a triple star system! Among the surprises included the discover of dust and metal that early and the discovery that stars formed so very early at all.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog. You can email Mr. Batchelor or Dr. Borucki through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Michael Listner, ATTY, back to the show to discuss the recently announced settlement in the SpaceX vs. USAF litigation around the block buy, SpaceX certification, etc. Michael took us through the origins of the law suit filed last year by SpaceX, the various motions to dismiss that were filed and the eventual settlement talks by both parties and the settlement reached about a week ago. Michael pointed out that nothing changed regarding the existing block buy of 36 core sole source contract buys awarded to ULA. The settlement did arrange for assistance to SpaceX to earn certification and for future bidding. Michael also provided us with his opinion as to a possible winner in the litigation or was there no winner. See what you think.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Ashwin Vasavada to Hotel Mars to discuss the latest findings announced by NASA in December 2013 regarding methane discoveries, organics in rocks, and indications that there had been flowing water on Mars, perhaps during the first billion years of Mars. As we learned, the first billion Martian years were likely to have been more supportive of microbial life than later times on Mars for a variety of reasons which our guest discussed during our 20 minute Hotel Mars segment. During our two part segment, we talked about free flowing water on Mars, the Mars methane as detected by Curiosity, and the organics found in Cumberland Rock. We asked Dr. Vasavada, the new Chief Scientist for MSL and Curiosity, many questions pertaining to these three end of the year 2013 NASA announcements and our guest guided us through the science, discoveries, plus he responded well to our inquiries. This is a Hotel Mars segment you will not want to miss! Note that the two parts of this segment are joined together as I eliminated the break.
