We welcomed our guests Dr. Dorit Donoviel & Dr. Eugene de Juan, Jr. to discuss the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) “Vision for Mars Challenge: A Unique Opportunity for Ophthalmology Companies.”  Read about this project at http://www.nsbri.org/newsflash/indivArticle.asp?id=454&articleID=212.  For additional information on the grants, visit http://www.smartcap.org.  I would also like to thank Kacey White for her hard work with both guests and TSS in making this program possible.  During the first segment of our 97 minute discussion, Dr. Donoviel started us off with background information for the Vision for Mars Challenge, then Dr. de Juan discussed the nature of the eye problems and the effects of low gravity on the optic nerve.  As you will hear from our guests, the Vision for Mars Challenge will award to small companies a grant of $100,000 to “to help identify and advance medical technologies for ocular health in space through collaboration and funding support.”  After this introductory part of our discussion, our guests went into detail about the medical issues relating to optic nerve changes, pressures, fluid balance and more and what this does to vision.  Our guests were asked how these vision issues might impact a crew on Mars or on the way to Mars but unfortunately not much information is known at this time. Also, we do not know the needed level of gravity to offset the optic nerve, fluid and pressure changes.  Our guests mentioned the upcoming year long crew visit to the ISS and that eye issues will be monitored so that accurate data on vision problems can be collected.  Dr. de Juan did go into many of the medical issues contributing to the vision problem including intraocular pressure and fluid balances.  In addition, we spoke about possible countermeasures.  Both artificial gravity with a short arm centrifuge and mechanical intervention via a certain type of pressure garment were discussed.  Medical intervention was also discussed, then BJohn suggested spinning the spaceship would be more cost effective that other types of countermeasures.  Our guests disagreed, saying medical countermeasures would be designed for patients on Earth as well as astronauts so the market size of potential beneficiaries worldwide would be huge as compared to just a handful of astronauts on a spinning spaceship.  Engineering problems were also cited as a severe cost driver in terms of creating artificial gravity for the crew.  Marshall called to ask about Lasik surgery.  Our guests were then asked about gender & other differences.  Don’t miss these discussions.

In the second segment, Dr. Doug was our first caller.  Doug had multiple questions as usual but first he wanted to know if astronauts could be selected for the longer space missions who had a lengthy stay on the ISS and did not show optic nerve changes or adverse effects.  Our guest thought this would be impractical given around 70% of all astronauts show some vision impact from being in space.  Prisms were talked about as part of mitigation in the form glasses with a variable prescription.  We talked about focus issues in space and on a submarine given my comments about wearing prisms glasses.  Doug’s additional questions dealt with doing a lumbar puncture in space as well as GCRs.  Doug and other listeners via email asked our guests if the vision problems were a show stopper for long duration spaceflight missions.  Don’t miss what Dorit & Gene had to say about this.  Near the end of the program, we talked about the impact of space medicine research on Earth medical problems.  The resulting discussion was most interesting, especially given the examples cited by Dorit via ultrasound in space.  The subject of aerospace medicine medical school programs came up and here Dorit explained the innovative program at Baylor’s Center for Space Medicine.

We welcomed Erik Seedhouse back to the program to discuss his latest book “Beyond Human: Engineering Our Future Evolution.”  During the first segment of our 90 minute program, Erik talked about long duration spaceflight and critical issues in radiation and microgravity that he believes may force changes or modifications in humans in order to survive the trips and live on Mars or another celestial location.  He also talked about changes here on Earth such as advances in bioprinting, especially for organs.  Our guest spent lots of time on the radiation challenges, shielding, and the need for possible genetic modification.  Another point he made was for nuclear propulsion to cut the travel time to Mars and other locals down and make the voyage safer.  His favorite advanced propulsion system was Vasimr.  Dr. Rowe called in and brought up his concerns with the cardiovascular  (CV) system in space, a subject Bill has talked about on many Space Show programs.  Erik’s research did not focus on the CV system so he was unable to comment on what Dr. Rowe was discussing.  Next, Erik spoke about muscle atrophy and other microgravity challenges and suggested human modification would address those areas as well.  He also talked about animal and human cloning, then a listener brought up a subject from our recent open lines program re pregnancy, childbirth, and kids in space.  Erik suggested there might be sterilization as a requirement or abortive medication on board.  I commented that this would cause a firestorm with the public, especially on publicly financed missions.

In our second segment, our lead off topic was a Posthuman/Transhuman future.  Erik cited examples and also used the classic movie Gattaca as an example.  Listener Paul sent in an email about the ethics behind what Erik was talking about.  Erik was asked about the lifespan of humans that might live on Mars or the Moon, then Ben asked if long duration spaceflight and humans in space were an economic driver for human genetic engineering.  Erik said no, that it was a very small part of the industry with organ printing as one of the major drivers.  Todd inquired about exercise and this led Erik to talk about genetic screening to select the most qualified people for the spaceflight missions.  As we neared the end of the show, Erik told us about his next book about expeditions, then he talked about Virgin Galactic and XCOR.

We welcomed NASA Astronaut Dr. Rick Linnehan to the program to discuss animals and their place in space in history, the present, and the future, plus human concerns for long duration spaceflight.  During this one hour program, we stared off by asking Dr. Linnehan for an overview of the role played by animals in space, including looking to the future for animals for agriculture, research pathology work, comfort, & other purposes.  We talked about microgravity issues and countermeasures, then I asked specifically about taking chickens to Mars for feed purposes.  Our guest talked about the effect of microgravity on chickens and the egg laying process.  He said a few times that while we might likely evolve over many years, decades or even longer to having a larger role for animals in space, most of the ideas and concepts today are pie in the sky.  We talked about some of the animals that had been and are in space including lab rodents, fruit flies, some small fish and others.  Our guest talked about the space acclimation process for animals, including the small fish, and we learned that in many instances the animals acclimate to microgravity faster than humans.  Our guest mentioned the need for advanced propulsion for long duration human spaceflight and suggested that Mars was on the edge of the possible using chemical rockets.  Rick mentioned some of the other human factors issues such as radiation and psychological challenges.  We also discussed astronaut exercise routines and the countermeasure exercise equipment currently being used with efforts underway to redesign the equipment to be more effective and lighter.  Several questions came up about private sector humans to Mars missions and crew health.  When asked if we could do a humans to Mars mission now or by the early 2020s, our guest said yes but listen to the details of this discussion.  Also, with regards to the private astronaut missions to Mars or elsewhere, several questions arose about the conditioning of the private astronaut crew, what microgravity countermeasures and exercise equipment they would have on board, what routines they would strictly follow and more.  Our guest was mostly referring to space agency astronauts in terms of our readiness to do human spaceflight to Mars now or the very near future.  He was unable to address private astronaut missions or their details because they are unknown.  We did talk about gravity and the absence of it in spaceflight, both for humans and animals.  Advanced propulsion questions and comments kept coming up during the entire show. At one point, I asked how essential advanced propulsion was for long duration human spaceflight and he said there would be no long duration spaceflight without.  Listen for the details regarding his opinion on this issue. Doug called to ask about bacteria, DNA, cat implants and more.  Artificial insemination came up with regards to surrogate species.  Doug also raised questions about the size for a minimum viable population.  After Doug’s call, I asked what our guest thought the priorities should be for Mars human spaceflight.  He listed advanced propulsion technology as first followed by human quality of life issues which he described for us.  I also asked questions about crew compatibility for psychological reasons as well as the probable command structure for the crew on a long duration human spaceflight.  One listener asked Dr. Linnehan about the differences in a zoo vet as compared to the typical vet we use for our dogs and cats.  Larry emailed in to ask if an animal had ever been on a space walk.  Rick said not his knowledge, talked about the need for an animal EVA suit of which there are none, and when I asked about taking an animal with an astronaut on an EVA for research purposes, he explained why that was impractical.  The microgravity simulation work in the NASA neutral buoyancy pool came up and our guest said that for about every hour he spends on an EVA, he would have spend about 12 hours in the pool.  Near the end of our hour long discussion, Jack emailed in for the best goals for human space flight.  Our guest suggested evolving stage by stage with cislunar, La Grange points, lunar settlement and out further and further to other destinations as our capabilities and technology improved.  B John had emailed in a few questions about microbes and the sea plankton announced by the Russians as existing on the outside of the ISS.  While we discussed these questions earlier in the show, near the end I asked our guest his question about microbes traveling greater distances in space than humans have and if our missions that have entered interstellar space carry microbes with them.  In his summary, Dr. Linnehan stressed the importance of continuing to explore space, to leave our planet, set up settlements, and to do what we can to keep pressure on the policy makers as we know the importance of space development and exploration.  He supports the private/commercial efforts and missions and even suggested he would do a one way Mars trip to help open up a Martial settlement.

We started our discussion with Dr. Schmidt stating the problem(s) with astronauts in the extreme space environment, longer mission duration stress, plus other factors.  Dr. Schmidt followed by Dr. Goodwin then explained and discussed personalized medicine in human space flight and the use of Omics analysis.  Their work was also applied to the emerging space tourism industry as well as for suborbital missions.  Regarding the suborbital flights, the interest seems to be more with the pilots who will be making many trips to space rather than the participant who will likely be doing it only once.  Our guests put forth the reasoning for personalized space flight medicine, we talked about the capabilities to do this screening and the studies today, what will be near term and what we can expect over the longer term as technologies develop.  Listeners asked about conventional mitigation strategies such as shielding, exercise, etc.  Our guests pointed out that they were not talking about eliminating the usual mitigation strategies but tailoring needs to an individual’s DNA and genetic makeup since  individual astronauts may have genetic and DNA differences that will respond better to a customized mitigation.  We talked about varying degrees of DNA stability & unstable DNA.  Much was said about the effects of RX medications and drug profiles.

In our second segment, we talked more about the suborbital flights and the interest in the pilots due to their repeat flights.  We talked about targeted RX medications for an individual, how medications are metabolized & how that might actually differ in the astronauts leading to customization.  Doug asked about a type of primate ISS experiment regarding fractionalized gravity.  Listeners also wanted to know about adding mass and cost to a mission due to personalized space flight medicine which as you will hear, was not the case.  In the concluding comments, our guests pointed out that personalized space flight medicine was going to be the future of human space flight.  Personalized and target DNA and genetic medicine is already starting to happen here on Earth so its extension to space is only natural.

He discusses both of these in the program’s first segment.  Dr. Graveline started out with an overview of his early work, how he got into the field, his decision to join the Air Force and why this area of medicine interested him.  He explained his early bed rest tests and talked about the challenges with the test subjects. Heather and Dr. Graveline compared those early tests to those of today that Heather has participated in.  It was a fascinating compare and contrast, especially regarding the discipline of test subjects then and now. Dr. Graveline talked about water immersion, the aerospace lab he used, and his water immersion tank.  Don’t forget to check out the picture of it on the blog.  Dr. Graveline is looking through the window at the floating test subject.  Would you like to float as Dr. Graveline explained for one full week nonstop?  Throughout our discussion, Dr. Graveline told us many interesting and sometimes funny stories from his past like his visit to the Today Show and their wanting him to wear “flippers!”  Our guest described the low body negative pressure device (LBNP) which you can see in the second photo on the blog.  He talked about it, the old Soviet program, Mir and tilt table tests.  Dr. Graveline talked extensively about the Soviet program, how he was able to monitor much of their data, & he told us about Alexi Leonov when he had serious problems when caught outside his spaceship.  Many questions were asked about early animal studies, Laika, and more.  He told us how they were able to do blood pressure readings on dogs & the Soviets bragged about it since Dr. Graveline was able to figure out, copy, & improve the Soviet system.  Mice and centrifuge studies were discussed in some detail & Heather and Dr. Graveline had comprehensive discussions about exercise in the bed rest studies of today as compared to none in the early days of the studies. Dr. Graveline talked with Heather about his idea to abandon exercise in space so the astronauts could concentrate on their work, then return in a hydropod and rehab completely back on Earth for a few months.  You don’t want to miss this discussion or explanation from Dr. Graveline as to why this approach should be considered and tested by NASA.

     In the second segment, we talked about bone density issues and the applicability of space research and findings to terrestrial medical issues for people with this medical problem.  He was asked about a long duration HSF to Mars and he said the bigger problem was galactic radiation which he talked about in some detail.  He said that as of today, there are no mitigation tools for this problem.  The discussion went back and forth about water immersion and the use of the hydropod for returning astronauts & Heather talked about prohibitive costs & that immersion is not used today.  One of our UK listeners asked Dr. Graveline about his being part of Group 4 – The Scientists.  As this was the first astronaut group that was not composed of test pilots, our listener wanted to know about the selection process & getting more scientists to the Moon & on missions.  Dr. Graveline had much to say about this subject & shared with us some terrific & historical stories from the past.  He talked about Spacelab, astronaut Bill Pogue, & shared science stories with us.  During our program, Heather, with her bed rest study experience & her recruiting work (listen to her Space Show program on the studies she has recent completed at http://archived.thespaceshow.com/shows/1926-BWB-2013-01-08.mp3 from Jan. 8, 2013), contributed greatly to the discussion and Dr. Graveline was equally interested in talking with her about the program today as compared to the program he started decades ago.  Dr. Graveline’s book, “From Laika With Love: Secret Soviet Gifts to Apollo,” is still available. If you want to ask Bas & his team questions, use info@mars-one.com.  Dr. John Jurist joined us as co-host regarding many of the human factors, technical, and media financing discussion topics.  Since our topic addressed many of the same issues with crossover for both segments, I have summarized the program without regard to segments.  We started by asking Bas about the Curiosity landing per the European media and the interest in Holland which is his home.  It was clear that Curiosity fever was strong and exciting across the pond just as it was here.  I then asked Bas to tell us about Mars One.  For the next half hour, Bas talked with us about why he started Mars One, plus he went over in some detail the Mars One plan, including financing, technical, engineering, human factors, and research issues.  After our introduction to Mars One, Dr. Jurist and I began asking questions about the Mars One media financing plan, human factors, micro and partial gravity issues, life support issues, and more.  We covered a broad range of issues including launches, launch state liability, family settlement on Mars, children on Mars, pregnancy, before the launch medical procedures, astronaut selection, etc.  We received several listener emails which we discussed with Bas throughout our 90 minute discussion.  After our initial introduction to the Mars One program, our discussion revolved around Bas responding to our questions and those asked by our listeners.  Some other issues discussed included time line, mission delays, the loss of a resupply mission & its impact on the overall Mars One timeline, RX medications on Mars, solar power as compared to nuclear power for Mars One missions, Mars EDL plans for both cargo and humans, outsourcing components for Mars One and payload integration services & needs, plus settlement sustainability issues with possible timelines.

Artificial gravity and radiation were discussed along with vision problems for astronauts having spent at least four months on orbit.

As we started the second segment,Marshall called in and wanted to know about athletic and sports games to pass the time for the crew on long spaceflights.  Dr. Seedhouse thought more of the idea to have some sort of sport or athletic game at the destination rather than on the spaceflight.  We also talked about what it would take to change attitudes and policy to undertake an interplanetary mission.  At one point in the discussion, our guest suggested we might be too soft in modern times to explore and that we were no longer as interested in exploring as we once were.  Make sure you hear this entire conversation.  We fielded more listener questions and calls, talked about humans being able to adapt to the space environment over a long period of time and genetic screening for crew selection.  We covered crew selection in some detail which then took us to the subject of bioethics which do not yet exist in any formal way for an interplanetary mission. Erik did include his version of an Interplanetary Bioethics Manual as Appendix II. We talked about pregnancy, pre-emptive surgery, death of a crew member, death of a family member back on Earth, waivers that would need to be signed by both crew and family members, and much more.  Toward the end of the program, our guest was asked about interplanetary propulsion systems and multigenerational crews.  Erik talked about the VASIMR and we asked lots of questions about the 2nd and 3rd generation members of the multigenerational crew and how to be sure they become doctors, engineers, and other positions needed for the crew’s survival and success.  We also talked about modernizing space suits and Erik told us about Blue Suit Days as a requirement for Canadian astronauts for space outreach support.

Please see & act upon our appeal at https://thespaceshow.wordpress.com/2011/11/21/space-show-2011-fundraising-campaign.  We welcomed Dr. James Hughes to the program to discuss his new book, “Citizen Cyborg: Why Democratic Societies Must Respond To The Redesigned Human Of The Future.”  Please note that we experienced telephone noise which you will hear as audio noise on this show.  Unfortunately, we could not edit out the phone line background noise.  Our discussion started with a focus on bio and medical ethics and an assessment of an anti-technology, anti-science movement in various segments of society and that impact policy making.  In Citizen Cyborg, Dr. Hughes talks about using human enhancement and other  technologies to push the boundaries of humans to improve the quality of our lives.  Fundamental to being able to do this is overcoming the opposition and this was a significant part of our discussion.  We had several listener emails asking about playing God by pushing these technologies and engaging in the human enhancement technologies.  This took us into a discussion about God, religious and spiritual issues.  I believe you will find this discussion to be most interesting.  At times during our discussion we extrapolated to the space field, particularly human spaceflight.  In our second segment, listener Lonnie asked Dr. Hughes to describe some of the main bioethical issues.  Here, we got into animal research, morality, Apes, Great Apes, and even pets, specifically dogs.  We talked about our eventual settlement on Mars or elsewhere, making modifications for us to live on Mars or another world, and the ethics of making it possible for animals to live on the new world with us.  We talked about medical research, cloning, and human genetic modification, especially for space travel.  One listener asked if humans were cloned and we sent the clone on a deep space mission, was that the same as sending humans.  The answer was yes but you will want to hear the full discussion on this topic.  Later in the segment, Dr. Hughes was asked if human spaceflight could be a leader in developing human enhancement technologies or would it be a beneficiary.  Our guest said beneficiary and pointed to the main issue of needing cheap propulsion for human spaceflight.  Our guest was asked about his term bioLuddites which he uses in his book.  Dr. Hughes provided us with a brief history of Luddism and then we discussed the mix in society that makes up the bioLuddites.  Another listener asked if cosmetic surgery was also human enhancement and we asked Dr. Hughes about his theory as expressed in his book that happiness is an illusion.  Near the end of the program, he mentioned the organization of which he is the Executive Director, The Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies (www.ieet.org).  This Space Show discussion not only addressed human enhancement technologies for human spaceflight, but also for our society in general.  For those of you interested in the subject, I strongly recommend you read his book, Citizen Cyborg.  Please post your comments and questions on The Space Show blog URL above.
