We welcomed back Emily Lakdawalla for a far ranging planetary science and mission discussion.  During the first segment of our 90 minute program, Emily was asked questions about the Planetary Society’s solar sail mission, LightSail.  Look forward to a special Space Show program about this project in the near future.  I asked her about her Cassini Icy Moons article on her Planetary Society blog which can be found at http://www.planetary.org/blogs/emily-lakdawalla.  We talked about the photo mosaics and Emily told us about the software and how any of could easily do similar mosaics.  As you will hear, we talked about icy moons throughout our program.  The Dawn mission with its approach to Ceres was an important discussion topic as was New Horizons on the way to Pluto.  As all of you have heard before, this is the year of the Dwarf Planet!  Dan called with questions about Mars 2020 and the sample return mission.  We touched on human spaceflight and addressed the NASA planetary budget.  Roy called to ask about the Thursday press conference about Ganymede, then before the break we got a question about the Rosetta mission and the Ceres bright spot.

In the second segment, Emily had more to say about New Horizons, how photos and data would be sent back to Earth, and the upcoming cliff hanging moments with New Horizons and why they are considered cliff hanging.  Don’t miss our New Horizons discussion.  Callers and questions came in about Europa, the overall cost of planetary missions for the American taxpayer, the Dawn orbit around Ceres and limitations due to hydrazine.  One listener even asked if there would be public events around New Horizons arriving at Pluto.  Near the end of the segment, Doug sent in several emails asking about Uranus and Neptune and here Emily had much to say in support of such missions.  I asked our guest about her preference between inner and outer planets.  We also talked about returning to the Moon.  Near the end of the program, Carl wanted to know what was going to happen with planetary science after New Horizons.  A series of lunar questions came in with one asking about a lunar sample return.  I asked Emily if a lunar sample return was needed given the quantity of Moon Rocks that we have from the Apollo era.  Don’t miss her most interesting reply with a focus on possible contamination from the lunar Imbrium event.  As our program was ending, Barry wanted to know why we were using radio communications from the outer planets rather than light.

We welcomed back Dr. Doug Plata to the show to discuss his ideas and concepts for an initial lunar base which he named Lunar Base One.  Follow along with this important website.   http://www.cislunarone.com/lunarbaseone.htm.  Be sure to click on the link in the upper left hand corner to download the Lunar Base One Reference Material. In the first segment of our 2 hour 1 minute discussion, Doug focused on introducing us to his Lunar Base One concept and Lunar Cots.  To follow this discussion, make sure you go to the Lunar Base One website per the above URL as he follows the information on that site for our discussion.  During Doug’s discussion, he took calls and emails from listeners on a wide range of associated topics, questions, and comments.  Listener questions covered telerobotics, wireless power transfer, artificial gravity & the use of a centrifuge at the base, wired power as in missile wire, laser beam power, battery usage, lunar dust, radiation, water, a lunar greenhouse, and check lists re solar panels, propellant, fuel cells, radiation, and more.

In the second segment, Eric called using a cell in Florida to discuss robotics over humans.  Later, Doug was asked if returning to the Moon would divert resources needed for going to Mars, the moons of Mars, or even an asteroid.  Don’t miss his response to this question.  BJohn asked about line of site communications with Earth or if there would be a need for lots of communication satellites.  Doug and John from Ft. Worth had an interesting discussion on several key points, then Doug spoke to lunar tourism, the transportation needs, then I asked him about changing space policy.  Specifically, I asked what he would say before Congress re changing our policy as to why the Moon were he to testify before both House and Senate committees.  Give your ideas on this on the blog because no matter how cool the technology and engineering may be, without a policy to go back to the Moon, most likely nothing will happen.  Rasmus called from Toronto suggesting the use of mylar over a small crater. You don’t want to miss this discussion.  As the show was drawing to a close, Doug spoke about his return to the Moon track at this year’s Space-Access Conference  which will be in Phoenix in late April.  He finished up his discussion talking about artificial gravity, the use of a long arm centrifuge on the Moon running at about a 5.4 RPM by the lunar team.  He also spoke about inflatables and what he learned in his discussions with the University of Maine professor.

We welcomed Michael Belfiore back to the show to discuss a variety of space news and current events items, plus trends in the industry.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 41 minute program, Michael talked about DARPA given his recent book on the agency, then we turned to the recent commercial crew down select NASA announcement naming the Boeing CST100 and SpaceX Dragon as the two companies that NASA will continue supporting for commercial crew.  We spent lots of time talking about Boeing and SpaceX plus everyone was wondering if Sierra Nevada and Dream Chaser would find a way to stay in the game.  The next topic was the Google Lunar X Prize challenge. Michael pointed out that a government had gotten to the Moon fist with a rover, the Chinese, thus the rules of the contest were changed to allow the contest to continue.  Marshall called to talk about the down select process and winners. SLS John called to tell us that he thought Dream Chaser and SpaceX would be the winners.  He and others suggested Boeing was the conservative choice.  He also asked about the news that a Boeing-Bezos deal was in the making for the new American made RD180 engine replacement.  Michael suggested throughout our discussion that the old guard or the traditional aerospace industry and participants were under lots of pressure from NewSpace.

In the second segment, we took a call from Doug who commented on the down select process.  Michael then talked about the Tesla deal for Nevada and their proposed gigafactory for electric car batteries.  We talked about electric cars in general, then Tim called to suggest a conversion kit for conventional autos to turn them into electric cars.  I questioned that from a market perspective.  Michael then introduced space manifesting and we talked about the 3D printer on the way to the ISS.  Michael mentioned Maven which was to be inserted into Mars orbit Sunday evening, 9:37 EDT.  News update:  Maven’s orbital insertion was a big success!  Congrats to NASA and the entire Maven team.  We also talked about Comet Siding Spring,  Suborbital flights came up and we heard Michael express concerns about Virgin Galactic & confidence with the Lynx and XCOR.  He talked about the early spaceflight participants and the risks they would be taking.  Visit his website, http://www.michaelbelfiore.com. In our second longer segment, Ron called in to talk about the history of the wheels on the Lunar Rover and an ad campaign by Goodyear that incorrectly describes the history of the rover wheels.  Ron talked about the use of piano wire, how the original wheels were made, who made them, and more.  The paper about this important history that we mentioned on air can be read at www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/lrv_historical_origins.pdf.  We talked about the history of the lunar rovers, the cosmic radiation impact on them over time on the Moon, and their design which included harmonic drives and engineering to shield from lunar dust problems.  He mentioned a good source of information, a journal edited by Eric Jones & Ken Glover, the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal. You can find this journal at www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj.  Ron directed listeners to the document section for Apollo 15, 16, and 17.  John from Atlanta followed Ron, had much to say about the recent success of the Dragon & Falcon 9, then he talked about human factors, one way Mars missions as being suicidal, the regulatory environment & the possibility of excessive or restrictive regulations.  We also talked about the new sci-fi movie, Prometheus.  The article I mentioned about the movie can be read at http://cavalorn.livejournal.com/584135.html.  If you plan on seeing the movie, I suggest you see the movie first, then read the article which is titled Prometheus Unbound: What The Movie Was Actually About.  It is written by Cavalorn.  Tim was our final caller.  He took issues with human factors medicine & Dr. Rowe. Also the risk of over regulation, especially if someone dies going to space. He expressed his thoughts on other things as well. While our discussion was civil, as you will hear, I did not agree with much of what he advocated.  I urged him and other space enthusiasts to be more inclusive of other ideas for space exploration and development rather than just believing their way is the best or even the only way.
