We welcomed back Charles Miller to discuss in detail the recently released NASA Study, “Evolvable Lunar Architecture that Leverages Commercial Space Capabilities and Public Private Partnerships.” You can read and download the report, “Evolvable Lunar Architecture that Leverages Commercial Space Capabilities and Public Private Partnerships” at http://titan04.ksc.nasa.gov/shuttle/nexgen/Nexgen_Downloads/NexGen_ELA_Report_FINAL.pdf. During the first segment of our 1 hour 39 minute show, Charles introduced us to the study, the background as to why the need for the study, plus he said that to find an affordable way to move humans out into the cosmos there needed to be an affordable way to do it. He briefly summarized the history of efforts to return to the Moon since Apollo, then explained why this new approach, modeled after the COTS program, was so much better. Through the creative use of the public-private partnership program, returning to the Moon can be easier and more affordable. Charles was asked lots of listener questions including questions that addressed the TRL level of both NASA and the private companies to go to the moon, public and private risk taking, commercial competition, and the strategic use of fuel depots to further reduce mission costs. He explained their program step by step through three phases. Listener Dan asked a series of question about robots being serviced on the Moon, asking if the humans would be better placed elsewhere to control the lunar robots using low latency telepresence rather than humans on the Moon. Don’t miss how Charles responded to this series of questions that Dan emailed us. BJohn was also active with questions ranging from asking about the Lunar Mission One program to questions about the costs and assumptions used in the NASA study, even the use of GEO. Other listeners wanted to know about lunar settlement as part of this study, lunar habitats, and using L2 rather than the lunar surface. Listeners also asked Charles about lunar microgravity issues and radiation. Charles had the most to say about radiation issues. Later in the segment he said the plan called for a migration of the initial program to something like an international lunar authority modeled after CERN and modern airport authorities. Dan asked another question about getting astronauts off the moon in an emergency wondering if there would be greater safety margins if humans were not required on the lunar surface. Charles indicated that there would be a lunar escape system on the Moon. When questioned about the economics, it was clear that the study had in mind to facilitate human expansion BLEO so options not expanding the human presence BLEO were not options considered for the study. Todd asked if SLS was considered in their analysis. The answer was no as they only looked at commercial launch options, not government launchers. More questions came up about how the project would be financed relative to the NASA budget. Don’t miss this analysis and explanation.

In the second segment, BJohn asked about the Falcon Heavy regarding fuel depots. Charles said it was a LEO only launcher so not considered in their study. More listener questions came in regarding depots. BJohn also asked about the use of GEO. Charles explained why this was not an option. Eric and Charles had quite the email exchange about needing humans on the lunar surface. Charles said they were primarily there to repair and maintain the robots and equipment. Eric kept asking about using robots for the repair and maintenance but Charles said that technology was not available at this time. Their give and take was a good discussion of the subject. As Charles pointed out, since a commercial company would be on the moon with the robots, they would have every reason to advance their technology to be more cost effective so moving toward robotic servicing of the lunar surface robots would be something a company would be motivated to do to save on operating costs. However, that technology was not available today. Listener Josh wanted to know about other potential lunar businesses including lunar tourism. Charles was asked about lunar cubesats, then near the end he was asked about property rights and lunar resource exploitation. As the program was about to end, we talked about the political process and progress the study needed to make as it worked its way through the policy makers, Congress, and others. We welcomed UCSD freshman aerospace engineering student Darren Charrier to the show to discuss his UCSD SEDS projects including building a 3D rocket motor and a 6U cubesat communications center for their lunar lander. Make sure you see the video of his TED talk, www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9umkenQDoY.  In the first segment of our 1 hour 27 minute program, Darren started off explaining his interest in space, the Moon, and mining lunar HE3 to solve energy problems around the world.  He also explained why he decided to attend UCSD over other aerospace engineering schools.  We then got into the specifics of the three SEDs projects being worked on at UCSD by Darren’s team, the 3D printed rocket motor which was an existing program before Darren came to UCSD, plus the lunar lander and the 6U cubesat lunar orbiting communications satellite needed for their lunar lander.  The group intends to ride share to the Moon but it was too early to announce anything specific about that.  The timeline is by Darren’s graduation from UCSD in approximately four years.  We also learned that the 3D rocket motor will enter the competition later this summer in Green River, UT (we usually do a Space Show program on this event once the winners are known), plus their 6U cubesat bird will be entered in a NASA competition.  Darren was asked about his team and the UCSD administrative support for their projects, plus he was asked for specifics regarding the 3D printed rocket motor including its performance specs.  Darren talked about fuels that will likely be used by the 3D motor plus they may use a version of it to propel the lunar lander which they want to make a soft landing on the lunar surface.  Abut the lander, I inquired what it would do on the surface.  He said they would be pleased if it accomplished the soft landing plus survived a lunar day.  They want it to call home and take photos.  Our guest received several questions about the UCSD SEDS chapter as well as SEDS on a national level.  One listener asked him if they had ITAR issues, especially with foreign students.  Don’t miss his response to this question.  Bill called from Chicago to talk about Darren given he knows hm.  We learned much about this young, inspired student and future industry leader.

In the second segment, I asked Darren if he wanted to carry out his lunar plans as a private company or with government. He wants to be a private company with the government as a customer.  We also talked about Darren’s larger set of plans for the Moon including his starting a lunar landing business, servicing lunar tourism, additional mining over and above HE3 and more.   When asked about going to Mars, he said the path to Mars was through the Moon.  He supported asteroid mining but thinks it is far from being ready now and the path again goes through the Moon.  Doug called to ask more questions about the 3D motor and mining HE3 on the Moon. This latter subject was a major part of the Part 2 discussion with listeners as there were many questions about mining HE3, fusion development, HE3 on Earth, and even seriously using thorium rather than trying to develop lunar HE3 resources.  John from Ft. Worth called in on this and suggested using lunar HE3 for advanced spacecraft propulsion from the Moon rather than bringing it back to Earth.  There was plenty of listener interest in the fusion-HE3 discussion.  Returning to asteroid mining, Darren said one of his goals was to mine asteroids but that it was still a very long ways off.  He said “mine the moon first!”.  As the show was ending, we talked some more about thorium here on Earth, appropriate conferences for Darren to attend and he gave a shout out to his team members.

In the first segment, Anatoly said the Russian program was at a crossroads wanting to develop new systems for the lunar mission & BLEO, building a new launch site ,Vostochny, while maintaining existing programs including the ISS.  He talked about programs falling behind schedule, proposed timelines followed by delays.  I asked him about the Russian tax system. Anatoly told us it was a flat tax system but that it was driven by their natural resources, especially energy.  In response to many questions, we learned that the Russian program has some struggles that make it similar to what is happening with NASA.  Anatoly talked about the new rocket Angara.  The Angara 5 is supposed to have its test flight on Dec. 25.  He also said there was a super SLS type rocket being planned but specifics were unknown at this time.  When asked for the biggest challenge to the Russian space program, he said it was the budget.  A listener asked about a possible joint China-Russian lunar or Mars program.  Anatoly suggested that were something like that to happen, China would probably be  behind it.  We talked some about the second printing of his book, “Russia In Space: The Past Explained, The Future Explored.”  Another listener wanted to know the origins of the Russian program.  We talked politics, sanctions, and the ISS relationship with NASA.  Returning their Proton rocket to flight was mentioned & Anatoly talked at length about their quality control problems.  SLS John called to talk about Russian nuclear propulsion.  The last caller of the segment, Richard Easton, talked about Russian GPS, GLONASS, timing & the early days with the Russian navy.

In the second segment, Anatoly talked about the Russian planetary program including EXOMARS with ESA for searching for life on Mars, their proposed HSF lunar program plus other missions on the planning table.  In response to a question, he did say their was lots of competition between the planetary side and HSF.  Roger wanted to know about becoming a cosmonaut, & Barbara wanted to know about space tourism to the Moon.  For the balance of the year, Anatoly said eyes were on the Dec. 25th test flight for the new Angara 5 heavy rocket.  Re the ISS, he expected it to remain as it is today.

We welcomed Josh Hopkins back to the show to discuss his Stepping Stones approach to affordable human spaceflight from Earth orbit to the Martian moons.  We also discussed exploring the lunar far side from the Earth-Moon L2 point.  In our first segment, Mr. Hopkins introduced us to a potential list of missions in sequence from LEO to the Moon and beyond.  We zeroed in on the lunar farside, both from the L2 Earth-Moon point and from the lunar surface.  Our guest focused our attention on the Aitken Crater Impact Basin and rock sampling for lunar and solar system science regarding different theories about the age and origins of the universe, all of which can tell us much about the Earth, the possibility for life elsewhere, and provide valuable science to further our understanding of the universe.  Mr. Hopkins was both detailed and comprehensive in this discussion, then we switched to robotic as compared to human missions, orbiting missions as compared to lunar surface missions.  Callers inquired about how such missions would be paid for and from which part of the NASA budget.  For example, does the NASA science budget fund the mission, does the cost come from the human spaceflight side if humans are involved, how would they share costs, & is there international cooperation.  One of the important issues brought up in this discussion dealt with the fact that in the science part of NASA, missions are competed for against one another, a process that seems to work well. Inquiring about mission competition with human spaceflight involvement is yet to be determined. Telerobotic missions were discussed and communication latency concerns were brought to our attention.  Josh talked about planned ISS telerobotic demos back on Earth at NASA Ames & with ESA.
      In our second segment, Josh talked about orbital telerobotic cost issues as compared to being on the lunar surface. A listener wanted to know about traversing the Moon from a habitat to the farside & Josh explained the challenges in doing that.  Josh talked in some detail about a radio astronomy observatory at the L2 point & on the lunar surface.  He talked about noise issues at each location & the advantages each brings to the table. Josh was asked about lunar tourism & its potential impact on a radio telescope observatory on the farside. A listener asked about the Google Lunar X Prize for sample return, another inquired about the lunar space elevator, and yet another called in to ask about Stepping Stones as part of the Flexible Path. ISRU lunar development was also a discussion topic.

Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright.  We welcomed back Marsha Freeman to discuss the GLEX 2012 Conference, her interviews with the head of the Russian Federal Space Agency, Vladimir Popovkin, plus other space news, the Chinese program, or domestic & European economic crisis, and more.  We started our first segment with a discussion about the Russian space program, their lunar plans, their thoughts on our commercial space efforts, lunar probes, tourism, and more.  Marsha talked about budget priorities and how best to fit in or prioritize space programs & efforts.  She talked about the impact on Russia regarding the U.S. led European Ballistic Missile Defense System plus the Russian concept for their Strategic Defense of Earth proposal.  Marsha informed us about other talks at GLEX, Mike Griffin, AIAA, and leadership. She also commented on the fact that many at GLEX & in other venues, in talking about the commercial/private space efforts, while supporting these efforts make the distinction that great countries do great things, especially in space.  She stressed great things as being the responsibility of the nation.  Don’t miss her comments on this topic.

For our second segment, we certainly ventured into some controversial policy and opinion areas with our guest going all out & not holding anything back.  We started with questions about the Chinese space program. Here, Marsha had much to say that included comments on the U.S. policy toward China.  She was asked about the plans to use a Soyuz to do lunar tourism.  We talked some more about ISS and our guest was asked about the proposed NASA center closure plan being discussed.  Marsha expressed strong opinions on the base closure idea so don’t miss her comments.  We then started talking policy & asked for her thoughts on various NASA administrators that she had spoken with over the years.  She told us stories about Charlie Bolden, James Webb, Tom Paine and Mike Griffin.  Marsha next spoke about vision & shared her thoughts with us on several outspoken space visionary leaders. I asked her if she had ever met with the President Obama or his science advisor.  She said no and then had much to say about presidential science advisors in general & specifically she had much to say regarding the current science advisor.  She was also asked about the problem space enthusiasts seem to have in connecting with the general public to have better space policy & funding. Marsha disagreed with my question, pointing instead to economic issues that need resolution before space can resume its rightful place of leadership in our national policy.  Many of you may find her comments a bit controversial but remember, on The Space Show we air all sides of the issues.  Don’t hesitate to let us know your thoughts on the many issues Marsha talked about by posting them on the blog.  Marsha linked the Eurozone economic crisis to what happens in the U.S., our space program & more.  She repeatedly called for government restructuring, recommending a specific path that she believes will be most beneficial for the nation.  Do you agree?  In conclusion, she did say that out of crisis can come wide & beneficial changes.  She also said we needed to start our space program with an incremental & common sense approach to lunar development.

We welcomed back Professor Madhu Thangalevu who was joined by Frankie Sharpe, one of the architectural graduate students in the USC Moon Studio program that just ended.  Dr. Thangalevu started out by telling us about the USC School of Architecture program and their space studio classes including the Moon Studio, Space Studio, and the program with the engineering department for the Engineering Space Concepts Studio.  Madhu then introduced us to Frankie Sharpe who talked about his lunar tourism project he did for the Moon Studio graduate class.  You can see some of his slides for his project at http://cargocollective.com/frankiesharpedesign/Tour-the-Moon and http://uscmoonstudio.blogspot.com.  In the process of Frankie telling us about his lunar tourism model, he talked about the learning process, the need to address engineering, cost, and human factors for his project, the solutions he developed for dealing with the new NASA guidelines for protecting and visiting the historical Apollo landing sites and more.  You will see how he creatively used holographs for the visitor to experience the actual lunar landings, how radiation issues were resolved, and much more.  I asked Frankie a series of questions about interest in his space work in the regular architectural firms has and is working for & you might be surprised by what he had to say.  You will also find it interesting that prior to being given the opportunity to enroll in the Moon Studio, space was not on his graduate school agenda.

In our second segment, Dr. Thangalevu talked about other USC space studio workshops and then we talked about space policy and the proper role for space in policy and our lives.  Professor Thangalevu talked about large global space projects that involve people everywhere such as planetary defense and climate change research.  We also talked aboutU.S. leadership in global space projects.  One of his suggestions was to consider that it might be time for a U.S. Department of Space to deal with these issues but he did say a paradigm shift had to take place for space to be fully realized.  He then introduced us to the cosmopolitanism concept.  This led us to an interesting discussion about the space “elders” passing the torch to the younger generations for their leadership forward.  During this discussion, we talked about the need to fail, to push to the design & function limits to failure so that something new & better comes from the lessons learned in the failure.  Our last topics included suborbital space, producing nuclear fuel for propulsion on orbit, hydrogen from algae on orbit, a lunar super computer connected to the aging Deep Space Network, and space & spirituality.
