We welcomed Sarah Scoles to the show.  Check out her website, www.sarahscoles.com.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 54 minute discussion, I first asked Sarah why and how she transitioned from astronomy work to being a science and fiction writer.  She took us through her path which I found to be very interesting.  Next, I asked her about her interest and reporting on various segments of the space industry, starting with NewSpace.  In asking her this, I referenced a recent Popular Science article she wrote (www.popsci.com/what-happens-when-space-industry-collides-with-tiny-town) and the comment made by Mr. Witt  about Interorbital Space Systems “engines that burn up so they can use themselves as fuel.”  We had an interesting discussion about this plus her visit to Mojave which included visits to Virgin Galactic, Stratolauncher, then down the road to Palmdale to see and learn about the NASA SOFIA project.  Sarah shared her interesting experience getting to fly in the SOFIA modified 747.  Don’t miss her telling us about this experience and being in the modified 747 with the SOFIA telescope plus other changes to the jumbo jet.  Sarah also told us about flying in experimental aircraft with test pilots at Mojave.  Sounds like great fun to me!  Later, I asked our guest for her top 2015 stories.  Mojave was a favorite as was the SOFIA reporting and her article re Brian Shiro and Astronauts4Hire. Later, she also mentioned a hard science stories re B-modes.  The scientific work on this project later turned out to be wrong so the paper on it had to be withdrawn.  We talked about the possibility of some kind of life on Mars now or in the past, the same for the possibility of life perhaps elsewhere in our solar system.  Sarah also liked the Dawn Mission which we discussed.  Jack emailed her about one way to Mars trips and Mars One.  We learned that Sarah would consider going to Mars on a one way trip though she did not have much to say about Mars One.

In the second segment, we talked about the potential for at least microbial life elsewhere in the universe.  This led us to talking about exoplanets and I mentioned the previous day’s interview with Dr. Crisp regarding climate change on Venus and Mars.  I told Sarah and the listeners that according to Dr. Crisp, even with an advanced scientific and technical population on those planets, they would have been unable to stop or mitigate the processes that allowed both planets to become what they are today.  Sarah spoke about one of her articles in aeon magazine, “Does Earth have a shadow biosphere?”  or “Earth’s aliens.”  You can read this article at https://aeon.co/essays/does-earth-have-a-shadow-biosphere.  Later in this segment, Rhonda asked Sarah if she received pushback on being a science writer from family and friends.  You might be surprised by her reply.  Our guest received several questions asking how to get published in science magazines such as Sky and Telescope among others.  I asked Sarah if she was familiar several science and technology space projects such as the work by Jim Woodward on Mach Thrusters.  Near the end of the program, Doug emailed her and then called in wanting to know if public support for space was essential.  If so, what percentage of the population was needed for this essential support.  10% was suggested and then I suggested it would have be an activist 10% because there would be a strong need for citizen lobbying for the projects.  Just saying that 10% of the population likes space and would support a larger NASA budget is not enough in my opinion.  I believe such a goal would need to be aggressively pursued so if 10% of the population was what was needed, it better be an active and capable 10%.  Another listener asked her for her favorite destination.  She said it was Mars.  Next, Doug called to mention that at the last Mars Society Conference, he computed that only 18% of those present were women.  He asked Sarah how to get more women involved in space.  The two of them had interesting things to say on this topic.  Sarah offered us a good closing with excellent Pearls of Wisdom thoughts.  Be sure you hear them.

During our 2 hour 12 minute program, we received several calls and answered multiple emails from you the listeners. In the first segment, I spent about 30 minutes updating the audience on my planned medical leave starting later this week, plus I did a detailed summary of our recent Indiegogo campaign to modernize TSS website and archives. I also provided listeners with an update on our website design process with our current time table for launching the new site. In addition, I tossed out some discussion topics including the NASA flowing water on Mars announcement, and the contest to build a 3D printed habitat on Mars. The architects who have designed the new spaceship like Apple HQ has entered the competition to robotically build the printed hab. You can read about this at www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3249387/Firm-Apple-s-Spaceship-HQ-reveals-plans-Nasa-backed-3D-printed-Mars-habitat-built-robots.html.  D.R. Arthur was our first caller to tell us about his Apollo Dividend Project. This project has been designed to cure the world’s economic problems through space development and resource usage. Check it out at www.linkedin.com/pulse/20140612190511-26391015-apollo-dividend-curing-the-world-economic-structure and also at https://twitter.com/apollodividend. D.R. spent about 20 minutes talking with us about this project. A listener emailed me asking me to compare Indiegogo to Kickstarter as she was considering her own crowed funding project. I responded to her as best I could but my Indiegogo experience, as good as it was, was based on only one 501C3 campaign. I’ve just attempted the one campaign plus I have never done a Kickstarter project though many Space Show guests and listeners have used Kickstarter for more than one project. Next was the first of a few UFO discussions based on the comments made in the second half of yesterday’s program with Dr. Stuart Robbins when we discussed his PseudoAstronomy blog. John from Ft. worth was our caller so if this subject interests you, don’t miss it. Before talking about the UFO subject, John wanted me to describe my tour of Dr. Jim Woodward’s physics lab at Cal State Fullerton. We talked about the lab and the Mach Thruster work in detail.

In the second segment, we started out with Dr. Doug’s call regarding the Dailymail article above on the 3D printing of a Mars habitat. Doug was not positive about doing this on Mars, I agreed with him, and this turned out to be a good short discussion on the possibility of doing a robotic 3D printed Martian habitat. Don’t miss what Doug had to say on this subject. Penny emailed us from Boston inquiring about mach thrusters, asking what they were. I made a pass at explaining this work to her, then Ft. Worth John called again to further elaborate on the physics behind Dr. Woodward’s work. Prior to ending his call, John had lots more to say about the UFO topic as he listened to the program with Dr. Robbins but did not call in. We had a fun discussion on the topic for the last 15-20 minutes of our program.

Welcome to these two recorded interviews during the week of the AIAA Space 2015 conference. The first interview for about 40 minutes is with Kathy Lueders, the NASA Commercial Crew Program Manager. I was joined in the interview by my two co-hosts, Rand Simberg and Leonard David. The second interview took place on Thursday, Sept. 3 at Dr. Jim Woodward’s physics lab at Cal St. Fullerton University with the tour being conducted by Dr. Heidi Fearn. Robert Jacobson was my co-host. During the first segment, Ms. Lueders explained the commercial crew program, milestones, budget issues, program objectives, and the certification process. She explained these subtopics in detail. Rand, Leonard and I asked her many questions about the NASA definition of safety, we proposed “crazy thinking” scenarios to her to see how NASA might react in such a situation and if they would be flexible enough to use hardware that may be ready but not yet certified. Kathy pointed out that non-cash assistance was still flowing to Dream Chaser and Blue Origin. When asked if she thought NASA would get its full commercial crew budget that they are asking for, she was positive but you decide after listening to her. This was a good, comprehensive discussion on many important topics including NASA risk taking and the commercial crew astronaut selection process.

In the second segment, Robert Jacobson and I drove down to Cal St. Fullerton to see Dr. Woodward’s lab and to talk with Dr. Heidi Fearn about their mach thruster work. The lab was very small & most the equipment was made by Dr. Woodward years ago. Heidi showed us a mach thruster and explained how to see the effect on the computer that measures the small amount of movement from the thruster. She explained it very well so while you won’t be able to see what she is talking about, I believe you can easily follow along. We walked over to the vacuum cylinder which she explained, she then talked about the floating tables and why the need for them, plus we talked about scaling up mach thrusters. I asked her several questions about their out of the box work at Cal St. Fullerton, students, delivering papers, and her reception by her peers. You will find her responses to these questions to be very interesting. Later during the tour, she turned on the experiment and Robert and I could clearly see the computer recording the movement over the background noise. We have a cell phone picture of it which I will put on the blog for this show. Near the end of our 45 minute tour and discussion with Heidi, we asked her about funding and timelines. She suggested a timeline for going to Alpha Centauri which sounded way too soon to me but she explained why she thought it was plausible. Tell us what do you think?

Please post your comments/questions for either of our guests of the co-hosts on TSS blog above. You can email any of the guests or co-hosts through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

Welcome to this new regular series in support of The Space Show Website & Archives Modernization Program. The Space Show will be bringing you daily short interviews (10-15 minutes each) with listeners who will share with us why they believe the new website and archival quality database will be important to them and enhance their Space Show listening experience. For the fourth of these short programs, we welcomed back John Hunt who is both an avid listener to the program, a frequent caller, and he has been a guest as well. John spoke to the need of having a guest and topic search program, including covering the early shows before 2008 that are not part of the current GuestSearch tool other than by guest name. We talked about having rebuilt the database to given the 2007 and earlier shows key words so that they would be part of our new, fully searchable, archival quality database for the archives. John was clear on the benefits and advantages to himself and other listeners with these Space Show website upgrades. John briefly mentioned having finished “The Martian” and Dr. Woodward’s book on mach thruster physics. We will hear more from him on these topics on Space Show programs.

If you want to share your thoughts with us on one of these short programs, we want to hear from you. Email me at drspace@thespaceshow.com and we will set up an interview time to record your thoughts on what you expect and are looking forward to with our new website. Welcome to our Open Lines show. In the first segment of the program, I suggested a few topics and then talked about our Website Modernization Program and the new fully searchable database to deliver archival quality archives. I went over a few more of the benefits for everyone with the new site and urged listeners to not only participate in our campaign but to help spread the word through their own networks, Facebook, etc. Our support site is at www.supportthespaceshow.com and our campaign site address is www.indiegogo.com/projects/oglf-and-the-space-show- modernization-campaign/x/11584678#/story. By the way, the new site will use hyperlinks!!! John Hunt was our first caller to discuss the book “The Martian,” plus his take on Dr. Woodward’s mach thruster work given he had just finished reading Dr. Woodward’s book. John had much to say about “The Martian,” especially from a technical perspective. It is an interesting and fun discussion. His comments on mach thrusters were somewhat skeptical but he was still thinking about it and Dr. Woodward’s work as detailed in his book. He will give us a report when he has reached his “final” decision. John’s feedback on this is interesting given his knowledge of physics. He was asked what it might mean if Dr. Woodward’s work was to be verified and commercialized. He said it would be revolutionary and would open up the solar system to space travel. Near the end of the first segment, John also mentioned EM drive, the challenges for out of box theories and work when going up against science orthodoxy & related issues.

In the second segment, we heard from Jon in NJ about new uses for space shuttle main engines, SLS, and reusability which he said did not appear to be something NASA was interested in at this time given their engine use plans. Another discussion topic that came up was comparing a Return on Investment (ROI) to a Return on Exploration (ROE). I mentioned that government projects are not typically discussed in terms of an ROI and that it was very difficult to calculate a ROE because for government, that includes many things, variables, and ways of calculating outcomes. I mentioned an earlier Mars Society paper I did years ago on comparing Apollo to the school breakfast program and Hoover Dam. I addressed calculating benefits, outcomes and an economic return for each of those three projects. BJohn emailed in a comment about returns going back centuries for Mars exploration, then we got into discussing the technical knowledge and awareness of society in general. I mentioned the upcoming program with Dr. Lewis Dartnell on his book “How To Rebuild Civilization In The Aftermath Of A Cataclysm.” We talked about starting up space settlements from scratch, what it might take to be independent of Earth & how similar it might be to rebuilding a civilization after a disaster. This topic consumed the balance of the show with listener emails and calls.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can reach any of the callers or those sending in emails through me.

Welcome to hour two hour twelve minute Open Lines program. In the first segment which was 70 minutes in length, besides throwing out some potential topics of interest, I introduced everyone to Spencer Austin-Martin. Spencer, a Space Show listener, stepped forward earlier this year to help us out with our website problem. Since then, Spencer has designed both our support website for our upcoming Indiegogo crowdfunding project to design and build a new website plus develop a fully searchable and archival quality database. Today we launched our support website, www.supporthespaceshow.com which will compliment our Indiegogo site once we take it public next Sunday, August 9 as Spencer will be with us for the full program that day. Today, Spencer explained the basic plan for the new site, what we can do with our archives, what the benefits will be for you the listener and for researchers. We also talked about some of the specifics of our Indiegogo project & incentives. While the support site is now up and running, it will likely be tweaked a bit before next Sunday. We answered many listener questions about the new site and our campaign Later, the topic of written transcripts for the new site came up for now and the future. I understand this would be a valuable benefit for listeners and researchers but for now there are legal, financial, and other constraints associated with doing this. I spent some time explaining the issues but I did say that the new website and archives will be able to deal with written transcripts down the road if we can find out way to get over constraints, of which there are many. Dr. Doug called to promote his idea regarding key words, we had a heated discussion and we certainly disagreed as Doug would like to see a real time notation available for guest usage of key words. I have asked Doug to post his idea (succinctly I hope) on the blog so that you can fully understand what he would like and so that you can chime in on it, tweak it, love it, hate it, or all of the above. In addition in this segment and the next one, I put out a call for help with voice recognition software that I can use to help me out as I recover from major hand surgery and the lack of use of my right hand for six week, plus for down the road use with transcripts. Listen to my call for help in both segments concerning a need for a quality voice recognition program and if you can suggest one, post it on the blog or email me direct.

In the second segment, John from Ft. Worth called to talk about the recent program with Dr. Woodward as he has been reading Dr. Woodward’s book on Mach thrusters. John had some interesting comments to offer us. So far he has remained skeptical but he has not yet finished the book. We hope to hear back from him with his final analysis once he has completed the book. John also brought up Em Drive and I talked about the NASA news release confirming EM Drive results by German Scientists. Here is one of the many news releases: www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3177449/Nasa-s-impossible-fuel-free-thrusters-work-German-scientists-confirm-viability-super-fast-space-travel-slash-journey-moon-4-HOURS.html. Author Anthony Young called to talk about his experience at the NewSpace Conference earlier in July as this was his first ever space conference. Anthony gave a glowing report about the conference and I supported what he said. It was the finest NewSpace Conference I’ve attended. I asked him to comment on the Dr. Linda Billings article I mentioned up front (you can read it here – www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-inexcusable-jingoism-of-american-spaceflight-rhetoric). Anthony then spoke to the entrepreneurial panel at the conference, the networking, the Exhibit Hall and especially the virtual reality project by SpaceVR. Dwayne called to comment about the Virgin Galactic safety article I referenced from the Daily Beast sent in by Dr. Lurio. Dwayne explained the issue and mentioned that this information was appearing in lots of places but he suggested we go to www.parabolocarc.com for the latest. Doug Messier of parabolicarc.com will be our Hotel Mars guest this week on the NTSB report and related VG safety issues. Before signing off, Dwayne offered us his perspective on the Linda Billings article.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can reach Spencer or the callers and those sending emails through me.
