We welcomed Dr. David Crisp to the show to discuss the NASA Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2(OCO-2) satellite. During the first segment of our 94 minute program, Dr. Crisp started out by presenting a short overview of the OCO satellites, the first two of which did not make it to orbit due to fairing failure after their Vandenberg launch. For the third attempt, NASA switched rockets to the Delta 2 and the satellite made it to orbit without a problem. Dr. Crisp then explained how OCO-2 works, how it detects and measures CO2 in the atmosphere from the ground up. He explained the color intensity and why the information is so accurate. I asked him to compare OCO-2 data with climate models. Here, Dr. Crisp stressed the fact that he was not a climate scientist or policy maker. That said, he did compare and contrast OCO-2 data with climate models to the degree reasonable comparisons can be made. We talked about natural sources of CO2 on earth, both land and water (ocean, rivers, and lakes), as compared to manmade sources of CO2. Dr. Crisp explained the emitting and absorption capabilities from the natural CO2 sources, photosynthesis with plants, and the fact that manmade CO2 is only emitted, not absorbed. This CO2 can stay in the atmosphere for a thousand years or so. He talked about the total parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere, how it has gone down and now is going up over the years and the amount of human created CO2 in the atmosphere and how that has increased over the years. Listeners asked about methane but OCO-2 was not designed to detect methane. He was also asked about water vapor. Dr. Crisp explained that water vapor in the atmosphere was detected and measured by other satellites, particularly weather satellites so it was not part of this genre of satellites. Jack emailed in a question to point out that a pause was going on for the past 19 years or so and the planet was not cooling despite human CO2 increases. Dr. Crisp offered an explanation for the pause so don’t miss it.   Jane from Seattle brought up the fact that warming and cooling on Earth has been going on since the beginning of time, without human produced C02. She asked how this could be given the conclusions many make regarding the increase in human produced CO2 levels for today causing global warming. Don’t miss how Dr. Crisp responded to Jane. Dr. Crisp also talked about solar warming and cooling cycles and said we are currently in a solar cooling cycle. Randy emailed in a question about the draught in California and its relationship to CO2 increases.

In the second segment, Becky in Las Vegas sent in a note asking about the climate and atmosphere on Venus and Mars given our guest has studied both planets. She was looking for a common link with Earth or maybe a common trend. Dr. Crisp had much to say about both Venus and Mars. Later in the discussion, I asked if humans were on Venus with advanced technology, could they have intervened in the global warming process and mitigated the impact of it. He said he doubted it, explained why and then the same question was asked about Mars though the situation on Mars was and is different than on Venus. For the most part, Venus was too close to the sun to do anything about it and Mars was too far to do anything about the Martian problems. This is why Earth is in the Goldilocks zone and why we search for exoplanets in this zone. Later, Dr. Crisp talked about today having the highest CO2 levels ever and the growing Earth population which is around 7.2 billion people having nearly doubled over the last 45-50 years. This led us to a discussion about energy, including coal, natural gas & nuclear power. He had some surprising comments about China and coal, don’t miss them. We also talked about India and its use of coal, then Dr. Crisp talk about the need to be able to store power, use solar and wind power, and to enlarge the grid to take wind or solar from areas where it was strong to be able to ship to areas that needed it. He also talked about the need to improve energy storage. Near the end of the program, I asked about any surprises discovered from the OCO-2 data. We then talked about how long OCO-2 would last and here, we talked about the design as a demo satellite without redundant or backup systems. A listener asked if cubesats could do such an OCO-2 type mission. Don’t miss his answer but the simple one was no because the technology for doing this requires hardware that is considerably larger than could be used by a cubesat. Before the show ended, we talked about the NASA Earth Science Budget, the cost per taxpayer, and our ability to freely download OCO-2 data off their website. He then identified the largest user and downloader of the data. I bet you will be surprised by what he said. NASA was the second largest downloader of the data.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog. You can reach Dr. Crisp through me or through a JPL search for his name and information.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Dr. David Brain who is part of the NASA MAVEN team to discuss the recent findings regarding the solar wind as causing the loss of the Martian atmosphere over billions of years. Dr. Brain discussed the findings for the Martian upper atmosphere, he explained the solar wind, the channel which most of the atmosphere seemed to use to disappear, plus he talked about the various stages and ages of the geologic history of Mars. We talked about the conditions needed for surface water, the early Martian history and its cooling which would cause it to lose its magnetic field in the first place. John asked several questions comparing the early history of Mars with Earth, especially regarding magnetic fields, the magnetosphere and shielding from the solar wind. I asked Dr. Brain to explain the solar wind so we would all know what the solar wind is and how it fluctuates. This is an information packed 11-12 minutes, don’t miss it.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience.  Welcome to our 1 hour 55 minute Open Lines discussion.

I started off the first segment with suggested show discussion topics, then John from Ft. Worth was our first caller to discuss the Don Nelson recent show and his idea for a fleet of modern private and commercial space shuttle freighters.  John had some interesting things to say about this idea as well as potential market issues given Don wants his freighters to be privately built and operated.  During the call with John, we talked about the possibility of the Federal Reserve raising interest rates and what that may mean for the space industry as well as other segments of our economy.  Though the NASA part of the budget is small, it is visible and it could be adversely impacted by a rise in interest rates as more money will have to go to paying the interest on our national debt.  Our next caller was Jeff from Tucson.  Jeff pointed out large aerospace industry trends and addressed the recent NASA delay in commercial cargo awards though they told Boeing they were no longer under consideration with the CST100.  Jeff also spoke about other projects with SpaceX, Orbital ATK, ULA and Aerojet Rocketdyne.  He spent a good portion of his discussion time talking about problems facing Aerojet Rocketdyne, possible merger solutions and parts of the business which it may need to let go as compared to pursue and continue developing.

In the second segment, Tim called in with questions about Maven and the recent announcement regarding the Martian atmosphere.  Doug was our next caller. Doug is planning a debate at the upcoming ISDC meeting next year on cislunar plans starring himself with his plan and John Strickland with his plan.  Doug talked about the differences between his position and John’s, wanted to our thoughts on adding more people to the debate with their cislunar ideas, then I asked Doug what his expected outcome was for doing this.  Don’t miss what he said about his expectations.  I told him I would be glad to do a Space Show debate with John and him as a “warmup” to the ISDC event.  I hope that happens.  Doug concluded his call saying he still hoped to call The Space Show while riding and trying to eat on the Gravitron at his local theme park while spinning at 24 rpms.  If he manages to this, it should be an interesting call.

John Batchelor and I welcomed back Dr. Ashwin Vasavada to discuss NASAs recent announcement about flowing liquid water on Mars. We also talked about other locations for water on Mars including ice which could be converted to rocket fuel were there sufficient energy available for such a conversion by those on Mars wanting the fuel. Dr. Vasavada explained the liquid flowing water and answered questions about the Martian atmosphere. We also talked about Curiosity and its examination of the early Martian climate history through its work in Gale Crater. We talked about the possibility of finding signs of life. With respect to this question, our guest said that the odds for finding signs of life are improving all the time. They odds “keep going up.”

We welcomed Dr. John Brandenburg back to the show to discuss his new book, “Death On Mars: The Discovery of a Planetary Nuclear Massacre” & the giant nuclear explosion on the surface of Mars.  Please remember to purchase the book through the OGLF/Space Show Amazon portal so Amazon will contribute to The Space Show. Contact me for added instructions if necessary.  In our first segment of our 1 hour 44 minute program, Dr. Brandenburg outlined the hypothesis behind the theory that there was a giant nuclear explosion on Mars a very long time ago that blew away most of the Martian atmosphere.  He cited evidence given the presence of Xenon 129 in the Martian atmosphere along with the presence of thorium and potassium around Mars.  He suggested listeners look at the Martian thorium and potassium distribution points by searching the maps that are widely available online.  Listeners had lots of questions about all of this, especially since Dr. Brandenburg estimated the size of the two explosions to be equal to something on the order of the Empire State Bldg, or a billion megatons.  We contrasted this explosion size with the largest nuclear bomb exploded on Earth, 50 megatons by the Soviet Union.  Furthermore, because of the size of the explosion, he suggested this was not a natural nuclear explosion but a weapon of some sort regardless of how impractical that might sound.  He also explained how the size and quality of the explosion could be calculated.

In the second half listeners had more questions.  Dr. Brandenburg agreed to send me his Journal of Cosmology article which I will upload to the blog when I archive this program.  The article is titled “Evidence of a Massive Thermonuclear Explosion on Mars in the Past, The Cydonian Hypothesis, and Fermi’s Paradox.”  Later in the segment Dr. Brandenburg did discuss the Fermi Paradox, the Cydonian connection and Mare Acidalium.  Before the show ended, John talked about his science fiction books and the latest one he is working on which will be out sometime this year.  John writes science fiction under the name Victor Norgard.

Please post comments/questions on TSS blog above.  Don’t forget to read Dr. Brandenburg’s reviewed paper on he blog.  You can contact Dr. Brandenburg through me.

We welcomed Bob Zimmerman back to the show to discuss a variety of space news items and events.  During the first segment of our 2 hour 2 minute show, Bob opened up talking about Comet 67P, the Rosetta mission, and the Philae lander which will land on the comet on Nov. 12, 2014.  Bob spent some time describing 67P, the lander, the landing site, and the topography of the landing zone.  Next, I asked Bob about the recent court decisions in Italy regarding the appeals court decision on the seven scientists accused of incorrectly predicting an earthquake that led to lots of damage and death. Bob clarified the issues for us and the decision  of the appeals court.  We talked some about the possible impact on space policy for the recently held mid-term elections.  Bob was asked by a listener if he thought the election result would lead to the cancellation of SLS as well as the NASA ARM project.  See if you are surprised by Bob’s analysis.  Ken in San Diego asked Bob about negative press articles regarding stopping space tourism in light of the SpaceShipTwo accident.  The USA Today editorial of today was cited as an example.  Bob did not think these articles would have any serious or long lasting impact and had much to say about the authors and publications writing them.  Before our break, Rob in Denver emailed in about Comet Siding Spring changing the Martian atmosphere when it swung by Mars.

In the second segment, Jeff emailed in about comments that Virgin has said it would be flying by April.  Bob was very skeptical about that timeline.  He had much to say about the investment and more regarding Virgin.  Bob then spoke about the upcoming Orion test flight set for Dec. 4 and heat shield issues.  Our guest spent some time dwelling on the heat shield issues which he said helped make his case that SLS/Orion were not sustainable projects.  Ben called from Orange County to talk with Bob about the Bigelow module going to the ISS in 2016, then they talked a bit about solar sales.  Ed emailed Bob to see if he knew what alternative launcher Orbital might choose given the Antares problems.  Bob spoke about the upcoming Russian rocket test for the new Angara 5 rocket.  SLS John called in about earlier comments Bob made regarding the Saturn 5, then they talked about SLS.

Please post questions and comments on TSS blog above.  You can reach Bob through me or his website, http://www.behindtheblack.com.

We welcomed Dr. David Brain of the NASA MAVEN Mission team to the program for a discussion about MAVEN and Mars science.  In the first segment of our 1 hour 22 minute program, Dr. Brain provided us with an overview of the MAVEN Mission which was launched on Nov. 18.  As we heard, it is on track for its orbital insertion around Mars on Sept. 22, 2014.  I asked Dr. Brain if he thought Mars orbits were getting crowded and also if he knew if there were traffic management issues in orbiting Mars.  We also talked about the Indian Mars mission, Mangalyaan, as it was launched a few days before MAVEN and will arrive shortly after MAVEN arrives at Mars.  Dr. Brain, in describing MAVEN, said it was going to answer two questions:  1) What happened to the atmosphere of Mars and 2) What happened to the water and where did it go?  We then talked about the absence of a Martian magnetic field but we learned that there are strongly magnetized rocks along the edges and such rocks are 10-20 times the magnetic strength of similar rocks on Earth.  Dr. Brain provided us with theories on this.  We extrapolated that it was possible for something similar to happen on Earth.  He also talked about magnetic fields, how one might generate a magnetic field on Mars & more.  This latter point was in reply to a listener question asking if terraforming included creating a Martian magnetic field.  Our next topic dealt with how these types of missions are developed, the hardware and scientific tool risk issues, the use of heritage hardware and instruments, program funding, and review panels.  Marshall called and talked about instrument redundancy, electronic improvements from mission to mission and more.  We also talked about sending data back to Earth using the Deep Space Network (DSN).  This brought up questions about private Mars missions using the DSN for their communications.

In the second segment, Doug called to ask how MAVEN was impacted by the government shutdown. Dave relayed the shutdown stories to us which were most interesting, especially since it went right up to the minute for possible mission delays of 18-24 months.  In fact, MAVEN did get an exemption from the shutdown but not because of its science.  It was exempted because of its function as a communications relay satellite.  Also in this segment, Dave responded to listener questions asking how the instruments are designed, tested, and protected for their trip to Mars so they would be sure to work.  Dave took us through the entire process for planning, designing, developing and testing hardware & operating components  over and over again.    This is a fascinating inside look at what is involved in a successful Mars, lunar, or planetary mission.  Doug then asked about methane on Mars and here Dave had much to say about competing methane theories and the latest findings from instruments on Mars including Curiosity.

Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog above.  Dr. Brain can be contacted through me.

During our 11 minute plus discussion, John, David Brain, and I talked about the Maven mission from its recent launch to its orbital insertion at Mars in approximately ten months.  We talked about its trajectory course to Mars, its mission to answer questions about what happened to the water on Mars and in the Martian atmosphere, to find out if the water went up to space or down inside the planet or to the polar ice caps.  Dr. Brain was asked about the instrument package and sensors to better understand how Maven accomplishes its mission.  Another topic was the ten year mission for Maven as a relay communication satellite for rover data back to Earth but only a one year mission for the atmospheric studies.  We learned that if the scientists think it is warranted after the year is up, they can apply to extend the science mission.  We talked about the Indian Mars mission also on the way to Mars and arriving a few days past Maven’s arrival.

During our 11 minute plus discussion, John, Dr. David Brain, and I talked about the MAVEN mission scheduled to launch on November 18, 2013.  During this discussion, we talked about the MAVEN mission, the instrument packages and what the instruments are designed to do, plus we talked about the potential for gaining information that might someday assist in terraforming Mars.  Other topics included how the instruments are made and stored on board the spacecraft to survive launch stresses plus many months of travel through deep space.  Dr. Brain talked about how the instruments would measure the Martian atmosphere, gasses, changes, etc.
