We welcomed both Jay Wittner and Ron Jones to the program to discuss the Integrated Space Plan (ISP), “a real and detailed timeline of our future in space for the next 100 years. Vehicles, Stations, Settlements, Moon, Mars, Asteroids.” You can see the ISP at https://integratedspaceanalytics.com/cms/plan and also their previously successful Kickstarter site, www.kickstarter.com/projects/486671231/integrated-space-plan-envisioning-humanitys-future. During the first segment, Ron provided us with the history of the ISP which goes back several decades. He explained its purpose and how it has changed and evolved over time. In fact, later in the show I asked our guests if the time had finally come for the ISP to come into its own given the developments and progress in space development. You will certainly want to hear this discussion which comes much later in the show. The first segment is mostly devoted to describing the ISP and responding to basic listener questions about it as it was new to most listeners. I also urge you to look at it on the web using the above links so you can be come familiar with the plan and its blocks. Remember, it is a broad enabling approach that includes many different paths to accomplish space development, exploration and a spacefaring economy/society. It is not about a specific program or project as we are used to discussing on The Space Show. Specific plans and projects can nicely fit in the appropriate blocks on the ISP as the ISP is a collection of logical and plausible multiple paths to space development without saying this or that specific plan is THE plan we must follow. Toward the end of the first segment, John in Freemont, CA asked about the Shackleton Energy plan as was recently discussed on The Space Show. This was a good example for our guests to show how the ISP could nicely accommodate the Shackleton plan but that the ISP was actually much broader and more inclusive than just the three part Shackleton plan discussed on The Space Show. As you will hear, there is no conflict between the two.

In the second segment, Jay was asked how people could get a poster copy of the ISP. Jay and Ron told listeners how to order a poster copy (the rolled version in a tube is the best way to get it). We also talked about support for the ISP by many from within all segments of the space industry. Later, much was said about outreach for the private sector and also the student population, especially through SEDS. Jay and Ron invited listener participation and feedback and they gave out their respective email addresses or told listeners how to find their addresses on their website, www.thespaceplan.com.   We talked about disruptive technologies and how they were represented on the ISP. GPS was used as an example since I referenced Uber from our Friday Space Show program. As part of our disruptive discussion, our guests talked about SpaceX, the Falcon Heavy, reusability, and more. A listener asked about cislunar development and how that was represented on the ISP. Frequent Space Show guest Gerald Driggers called in with many interesting comments so make sure you listen to his discussion. His call was followed by John from Ft. Worth asking about actual markets & customers for the businesses.  Our guests talked about the key to customers would be lowering the cost to orbit, then they mentioned space tourism and specific payloads. As our program was ending, both guests offered closing comments and take away statements.   Both made a final appeal for listener participation and feedback as the ISP is a continuingly evolving plan.

We welcomed back Debra Facktor Lepore to this special one hour one segment program in which we discussed numerous space industry topics.  We started out getting an historical overview of Ball Aerospace, including our learning about some of their new projects with S. Korea and new technologies.  We did a 135  year overview in just a few minutes.  The company really does have a fascinating and most interesting history, including the Ball jars dating back to the 1880s when the company started.  The aerospace part of their history dates back 60 years.  Debra did a good job in summarizing their aerospace history, including moving forward with NewSpace, non profits, cubesats and more.  Listeners asked our guest many email questions including her view of the trends in the space industry, especially among the entrepreneurial segment.  Other topics discussed included disruptive markets and technology, the launch industry, SpaceX, ULA & others, plus the need for viable, productive space  markets.  One market she talked about that was in demand was the market for space data.  Debra had much to say on this subject so don’t miss it.  Debra was asked about human spaceflight which she classified as exploration, discovery, and human nature.  Listener Jack asked Debra about space projects based on the “coolness factor” rather than commercial or national security value.  This proved a very interesting conversation so again, I urge you not to miss it.  Another listener asked about trends toward public only projects, public/private projects, and international cooperative space projects.  Near the end of the show, we had a few listener questions about kids studying engineering but preferring something like an Apple employment to NASA or the space industry because space projects take so long and are often cancelled.   Debra had much to say about this subject plus the potential of space to impact so many other fields.  This prompted an email from a listener who drives part time for Uber.  She pointed out how it was disruptive and based on space technology.  This too was a most interesting discussion that I am sure you will appreciate.  In conclusion, Debra paid her respects to the late George Mueller who recently passed away.   George was a great influence on her life , her career, and the space industry as far back as Apollo.  You can read about Mr. Mueller at http://spacenews.com/george-mueller-apollo-manager-and-kistler-founder-dies.

We welcomed Dr. Gil Levin back to the show to discuss Mars new updates, the possibility of life on Mars, and news based on his Viking Labeled Release life detection experiments from the two Viking missions to Mars in 1976. During the first segment of our 93 minute show, Dr. Levin told us about three important announcements that have either happened or will happen. The first was is by the ISRO in India saying they would release their methane experiment data from their Mars orbiter on Oct. 1. We discussed the implications of Martian methane later in the program. The second announcement which will take place on Monday, Sept. 27 with an afternoon NASA press conference is expected to announce the confirmation of flowing water on Mars. All NASA will say is they are going to finally disclose answers about a significant Mars mystery that has finally been answered. The speculation all points to water. The third news announcement was that the Viking 1 landing site from 1976 has been selected by the appropriate NASA team as the first landing site for the Mars human mission. Dr. Levin spent most of the rest of the first segment talking about the Viking Labeled Release experiments, why the science continues to be rejected today and some theories behind the rejection. Some of this discussion followed us into the second segment. I asked Gil to describe what a modern life detection experiment would consist of and he went into that in some detail. Gil was asked if he believed in conspiracy theories. He did not want to go there but we did talk about them from time to time during the show. BJohn for example suggested NASA did not want to announce life on Mars for fear of planetary protection rules and policies stopping their humans to Mars program. We also talked about that being a possible stumbling bloc for wealthy private sector space entrepreneurs to launch their own life detection experiment because planetary protection rules would impact their plans just as they would NASA. The 25 year NASA Roadmap to Mars program came up and like many others, Dr. Levin did not think it was credible. We spent mor time discussing wealthy private sector people possibly funding their own Mars science and eventual human missions. Gil addressed methane on Mars in some detail and what finding it on Mars may mean for life detection. He was also asked if he could propose experiments for missions from other national space agencies. He said he could but then told how he was doing that for Russia in 1996 & then the mission was cancelled because the US blocked him from exporting and talking about Carbon 14. As the first segment ended, Gil identified scientists that had published credible research in support of life on Mars. Don’t miss what he had to say about the scientists, their work, and what happened when it was published.

In the second segment, Gil suggested that possibly his work was dismissed because he was an engineer, not a scientist. He talked about this possibility in some detail. I asked him to support his contention that life existed on Mars now. For a significant part of this segment, he listed experiment after experiment, solid evidence, some solid theory, all in support of and to back up his claims. It was a convincing impressive list so don’t miss this part of the discussion. Ben from Chicago challenged Gill with a few hard hitting questions about his work being dismissed. Essentially he asked Gil if he might just be dismissed because he is seen as an old, angry guy, fighting for his decades old experiment to be valid so his claims and efforts are pretty much dismissed for those reasons. Gil agreed with part of it and said he was looking and hoping for younger, more open minded researchers to take a fresh look at the data. We talked about open minded researchers, their organizations, and institutions for a good portion of this segment. As the show was nearing its end, we talked about NASA life detection experiments that flirted with detecting past or present live as compared to experiments designed to confirm once and for all life or no life. As the show was ending, BJohn asked why everyone was in such a hurry to do the life detection experiments given Mars was not going anywhere. I thought Gil gave a terrific answer to this question which also served as his conclusion to our discussion. Don’t miss his response to BJohn. We welcomed back Anthony Young to discuss his new book, “The Twenty-First Century Commercial Space Imperative.” During the first segment of our 92 minute discussion, Anthony talked about writing the book as part of the Springer Briefs In Space Development Series. He talked about commercial space emerging into a huge venue, then he outlined the format of his book which is for the most part the book’s Table of Contents (check out the book’s Amazon page to read the Table of Contents). You can follow along with us as our guest discusses the major topics and themes based on the Table of Contents. During this segment, I sked Anthony why he thought commercial space was the twenty-first century imperative. Don’t miss his response to my question. Other topics discussed in this segment included entrepreneurism, start-ups, even NASA projects. In chapter 2, Anthony talked about game changers in the industry. Here, he specifically cited SpaceX and Stratolaunch. Later, he included the developing cubesat industry and then in a later chapter, he cited the personal spaceflight industry. Anthony talked about reaching students and addressing the issues surrounding STEM, plus he talked about what was happening with private space outside the United States.

In the second segment, we talked about the upcoming movie, “The Martian” and the fact that it addresses a government mission and has nothing to do with commercial or private space. Anthony cited a recent headline he had seen saying the movie would do nothing to advance commercial space. Returning to the Moon came up next as did international projects which he said were a significant contributor to global peace. Near the end of the segment, a listener asked about the impact of the SpaceShip 2 accident and our guest talked about the NTSB findings. Despite the accident, he said their was significant potential for growth in the personal spaceflight segment of the industry, both for suborbital as well as for orbital flight. Anthony was asked about both the role and risk of government regulation in the emerging commercial space industry. As we were nearing the end of the program, I asked him for his thoughts on what the industry would look like ten years from now. Before our discussion ended, Anthony said he was working on a another book regarding the Apollo lunar samples.

We welcomed back Dr. Madhu Thangavelu to discuss the Planetary Defense Team and their work at the ISU Summer Session which was held this year at Ohio University. About 20 minutes into the show, he was joined by one of the student participants in the session, Tihomir Dimitrov (Tisho). Madhu explained that he gave the team an impossible scenario to solve. The scenario was that a comet was heading toward Earth and would impact us in two yeas. The students had to come up with a mitigation strategy. The first segment of our program talks about the considerations, the plans, & the mitigation means which included directed energy and modified nuclear weapons. Listeners and I pushed both Dr. Thangalevu and Tisho on these two strategies, plus I challenged them on their goal of changing the world by engaging in planetary defense of the Earth, the Moon, and even Mars. I kept asking them why they don’t improve humanity in Africa and the Middle East because as host, I can play the part of the devil’s advocate to challenge their reasoning and thinking. In the end, it seemed that the solution to the problem was based on how much work was done in the time leading up to the discovery of the incoming comet. Our guests also talked about evacuation strategies and making touch decisions for the good of society and the planet but maybe not so good for the city, town, region or people that get hit by the comet. Its an interesting discussion and I am sure all of us would have enjoyed being in this summer session class. In the second segment, Madhu talked about his upcoming design studio class with the theme this year of exploring the role of the Moon in our future space activity. He talked about the role of governments in making the Moon part of our future in space as compared to the role of private companies and entrepreneurs. At one point he said the key would be in how we change the way we look at space. When asked by a listener, Dr. Thangalevu clarified that he was talking about the role of the Moon in human space activity, not just robotic missions. We welcomed Russell Cox to the program for our 92 minute discussion of the Lunar Initiatives workshops. Follow us at www.lunarinitiatives.com. Russell began the discussion by providing us with the background that led him to create the Lunar Initiatives workshop series. The start goes back to 2009 with the lunar missions that showed there was water ice at the poles. He said this changed the Moon and science for all time and opened up an entirely new realm of lunar possibilities and opportunities. He spent some time discussing the key lunar missions & their significance. Next, we turned our attention to the Lunar Workshops, Lunar Art, and the Lunar Challenges. All are described on his website so check them out. Regarding the workshops, he has a LunarCubes workshop, the Lunar Surface Applications workshop, the Lunar Scientific Opportunities in Cislunar Space (SOCS) workshop, and the Lunar Conference. Read about all of these events on his website but for our discussion, we mostly talked about LunarCubes and cubesats, Cislunar space, and near the end of the show, LunarArt. In addition to discussing The Lunar Initiatives events, Russell talked about returning to the Moon, lunar hackathons, prizes and contests, entrepreneurial efforts to go to the Moon, the Google Lunar XPRIZE, cubesats, the Do It Yourself (DIY) emerging markets, and more. Listeners asked him questions about lunar exploration, the technology readiness level of the entrepreneurs wanting to develop a business for going to the Moon, lunar settlement, lunar habitats, and using the Moon as a stepping stone for other solar system destinations. Don’t miss his response to these questions.

 

In the second segment, Russell spent more time on human lunar exploration and settlement and the need to push the technology today to do what we can today rather than waiting to be able to do more in future years. He said the road to the Moon is open! Russell described several existing opportunities including one by Space Systems Loral that you will find interesting. A listener asked him if we needed to focus on developing cislunar transportation, then our conversation switched to Lunar Art and their programs and contests in this area. He said poetry and short stories were included in this category and the contest. Late in the segment, Tim called in to raise questions about settlement given the possibility of gamma ray bursts plus comments from Dr. John Lewis regarding the Moon. We welcomed back Jeremy Straub with several of the student participants in this summer’s UND undergraduate research program for small spacecraft satellites. Jeremy was joined by Delia, Davila, Wentong Zhang, Samuel Jackson, Alexander Layton, Emily Jenkins, and Matthew Russell. During the first segment of our 82 minute program, Jeremy introduced us to students Samuel Jackson, Matthew Russell, Wanting Zhang & Delia Davila. Each student spent a few minutes going over their research project and interests. I’ve listed each student & their project in the bio section of this archive program but we did focus on issues dealing with cubesats and higher orbits with the need to deorbit them without causing debris. Neural networks were discussed along with adversarial examples and training problems using a grass and a cow as an example. Don’t miss this discussion. Samuel talked about cryptographic algorithms and picture encryption, then Matthew talked about the adaptive attitude control systems for a small satellite or cubesat. He said he was focusing on intrusion detection security for existing satellite security solutions. Jeremy added in details for each of the student research projects and tied the focus to smallsats, especially since all were attending this year’s SmallSat Conference in Logan, Utah.

 

In the second segment, Alex Layton led off with his project to find new ways to measure distances with cameras using image processing techniques. He addressed X-Y coordinate issues and more. Emily focused her research on astrodynamics for maintaining orbits and deorbiting small satellites and cubesats from much higher altitudes such as 600 miles above Earth. She had much to say about cubesat orbits today and how they were evolving to higher orbits in a very short period of time. Throughout both segments, Jeremy and the students spoke about various NASA programs and funding opportunities, getting a launch and being placed on a ride share launch manifest. We also had quite the discussion on cybersecurity issues, at times comparing a cyber attack to a physical attack on a satellite. Don’t miss what Jeremy had to say on this subject. As our program was nearing the end, we talked about the SmallSat Conference this year, networking opportunities for the students and their future plans.

We welcomed Brent Sherwood back to the show to discuss the rational, potential, and economics for the use of space solar power (SSP). During the first segment of our 1 hour 27 minute discussion, Brent first introduced us to Dr. David MacKay from Cambridge University who in 2009 was appointed Chief Scientific Advisor to the Department of Energy and Climate Change. Brent talked about Dr. MacKay’s book during our discussion, “Sustainable Energy-Without The Hot Air” which is available for free on the internet. You should follow along in the book with Brent’s discussion, especially in the first segment, as our guest referred to pages and visuals frequently. Check it out at http://withouthotair.com. Most of the first segment was spent using information from Professor MacKay’s book to explain the current energy and climate situation on Earth and to justifying moving away from petroleum, eventually to SSP. Brent talked about CO2, energy disruption, the transition to something other than fossil fuels, and how to develop SSP. Dr. MacKay used modeling for the UK which Brent referenced, especially from page 215 with the UK map. Brent then talked economics, again referring to the work by Dr. MacKay suggesting an SSP system costing $1.4 trillion! Spread out over a number of years, that price was not much different from what is spent on several government departments and policies, including NASA at this time. Brent listed several examples of this so don’t miss this discussion. Brent then suggested the least path of disruption would focus on the key which would have to be electricity. This took us to our next topic which addressed how to generate the amount of electricity needed, including his identifying several newer technologies that could lower some industry costs. He talked about some of the main challenges including transportation, storage, transmission, & operations. Later in the segment, Brent delved into the cost per kWh for electricity. Marshal called to talk about key new technologies including advancements in related and applicable photo voltaics and more.

 

In the much shorter second segment, Brent talked about macro engineering projects and huge platforms in GEO space. He said that such SSP GEO platforms would be around 7,000 sq. km. or three times the size of the paved U.S. national highway surface. Brent then addressed why none of this ever happens and he pointed to this not being a purpose of NASA as an example. To counter this, he advocated for a serious demo project, even suggesting the use of the ISS for the demo. Our guest talked about the challenge in attracting private capital to this because it is so futuristic right now. However, private capital has flowed to the futuristic industry of asteroid mining. We both asked why to one and not to the other? The last email question of the day was from Carol who pointed out that government policy to regulate coal and CO2 over 30 years is off point. Instead, government policy should produce a serious demo project that confirms the technology and the potential market, then let the markets and industry self-regulate and invest for the future.

We welcomed Dr. Julie Robinson, ISS Chief Scientist, to the program. During our 71 minute discussion, Dr. Robinson provided us with an overview of science on the ISS, specifically identifying two goals: 1: Research for BLEO; 2: Developing LEO for long term space use and for benefiting life here on Earth. We discussed the logistics of science on the ISS, the ISS international partnership and how ISS resources are allocated to the partners for science as well as other projects. Our guest further broke this down between Russian and the U.S. and then said that for the U.S. segment, the U.S. has about a 76% usage allocation of ISS resources. We talked about the science done on the ISS, the mix with government and commercial projects, then we started talking about the 1 year study with the Russian cosmonaut and American astronaut while at the same time doing the Twin Study with astronaut Scott Kelly on the ISS with his brother Mark Kelly here on the ground. Dr. Robinson spent much of the balance of our interview time going into the specifics of these concurrent studies, the investigation categories for each study, and more. Our guest fielded questions about the length of time for the study being fixed at one year rather than being longer and objective oriented. As you will hear, ISS logistics, using the Soyuz as a lifeboat, and the overall ISS operations and other experiments going on all contribute to why a one year study was settled on rather than a long duration study or one based on achieving certain accomplishments or objectives. Dr. Robinson talked about the possibility of future studies given that they anticipate issues and information from this first study suggesting more refined studies to be undertaken in the future. Listeners emailed our guest several questions including asking her about the assumed low science productivity on the ISS, a statement Dr. Robinson refuted with evidence. BJohn also asked about low gravity issues. Later, in a follow up question, BJohn asked about a Phobos mission and doing human spaceflight mission simulations on the station. Don’t miss Dr. Robinson’s response to these questions. Dr. Bill Rowe called to talk to her about CO2 buildup, oxidative stress, EVAs, and possible magnesium deficiencies in astronauts while in space. We talked radiation issues, the OSHA rules for maxing out on radiation, and finding astronauts for the long mission that would not be disqualified due to the OSHA radiation rules. Vision problems, fluid shifts and other complications were discussed throughout our interview with Dr. Robinson. A listener commented that both participants in the 1 year study were men and wanted to know about gender differences which Dr. Robinson addressed. Another listener wanted to know about shared access of the information and if it would be made available to the commercial industry, the space tourism industry, even Mars One as an example. Later in the segment, Dr. Robinson went into much more detail regarding the investigation categories for both the 1 year and the Twin Study. When talking about fluid shifts, she was asked about differences in the Russian approach as compared to the American approach. One example that she provided us was the Russian use of their Chibis suit which sucks fluid back down to the legs. In making additional points in reference to space settlement questions, Dr. Robinson talked about comparisons with space to early oceanic exploration and said that people are not living at sea for their entire life even today. Don’t miss this discussion. Based on other questions, the human gravity RX was discussed along with the use and challenges regarding centrifuges in space, alternative propulsion to get to a destination much quicker, and the fact that even a low gravity body is better for people than no gravity. Again, don’t miss the discussion. We talked more about behavioral studies, Dr. Doug asked a series of three questions that took us through to the end of our program with other listeners asking questions in-between Doug’s. For example, cognitive issues came up as did timelines and influences to making rapid research progress including money and financing. As we were about to end, I did ask about genetic screening, experimentation, and modification. Don’t miss what our guest had to say about this and why. As we were ending, I inquired about research plans once the ISS was deorbited. Again, don’t miss the options that were discussed with us. We welcomed Michael Mackowski to The Space Show to discuss his book “Adventures in Space Advocacy,” space advocacy in history through to the future, spacecraft model building and much more. During the first segment of our 90 minute program, Michael talked about growing up as a “child of Apollo” and being inspired by our early space program. He went on to get an EE degree and to work in the industry. He said it was an exacting time, especially when the Galileo Jupiter mission finally happened. He talked about the start of organizations such as L5, The Planetary Society, AIAA, and his own early ventures into space advocacy which are detailed in his book, available at Amazon at www.amazon.com/Adventures-Space-Advocacy-Personal-Activism/dp/1511564911/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1438189701&sr=8-1. He talked about moving, heading to Phoenix and engaging in space advocacy once again after a brief pause when he was in Washington, DC. This led us to a discussion about individual advocacy efforts as compared to group or organizational efforts. Michael was asked how he has sold human spaceflight to a general audience, his most receptive audience, and lobbying congress. Our guest spent some time discussing the challenges in advocating human spaceflight to the general public so don’t miss this discussion. Space tourism came up as a probable kick starter once the industry starts commercial operations. Michael thought that space tourism could provide a crucial boost for industry support even outside the space community.

 

In the second segment, we talked about Michael’s interest in spaceflight models. Michael described the industry, licensing challenges, specialty model builders and more. He also talked about using models in the form of make and take kits when talking to young students about space. Model building through 3D printing was discussed, then I switched the topic to inquire about his success in outreach with adults and children. He said 5-7th grade was the best group to talk with as high school was probably too late. As for speaking to adult groups, he said it was usually about entertainment but that it seldom produced advocacy action on the part of the adults hearing the talk. I seconded that experience given my talks with adults on space this and that. Near the end, we talked trends, the increasing influence of social media, passion, and connecting pace to our future.
