We welcomed back to the show Dr. Jason Cassibry from the University of Alabama Huntsville to discuss nuclear propulsion of all kinds.  In our initial segment of this 1 hour 30 minute discussion, I first asked Dr. Cassibry about a fusion drive project as reported at www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-jlv1x3ov4.  Dr. Cassibry spoke about the work going on at the University of Washington which was mentioned in the fusion drive video above.  We then talked about transit times to and from Mars and the differences with chemical propulsion, nuclear thermal, and then fusion.  During this discussion, Jason also described the differences in nuclear thermal and nuclear electric propulsion.  A related issue we discussed dealt with the nuclear regulatory environment.  We talked about the nuclear climate, protests, and how best to overcome such protests.  Doug called asking about timelines and said it was moving at such a slow pace, for his projects that he thinks about, he dismisses nuclear propulsion, instead opting for analysis and mission planning using chemical rockets though many are not much further along than a Power Point at this point in time.  Doug also thought it might be easier to do nuclear propulsion by partnering with Russia as they might be easier on the regulatory environment than the U.S.  Our caller asked about ion propulsion and thrusters as well as thermal protection needs.

In the second segment, Jerry emailed about nuclear propulsion in other countries plus more about possible consumer protests.  Ben asked if we could substantially improve chemical rockets and I inquired as to why the recent nuclear program Prometheus was killed.  VASIMIR was next brought up for discussion.  I asked Jason about nuclear accidents in space or on Mars and would they be as destructive as nuclear reactor accidents here on Earth.  Jason provided a most interesting answer saying he thought nuclear reactors in space would be accident proof!  Christine in Dallas suggested we need a better story for more support for nuclear propulsion.  Don’t miss the reply offered by Dr. Cassibry. Near the end of our discussion, I asked our guest about suborbital propulsion.

We welcomed Dr. Dmitriy Tseliakhovich, CEO & CTO of Escape Dynamics (http://escapedynamics.com) to discuss their work on making microwave beamed propulsion possible for space launch.  During our 1 hour 39 minute discussion, Dr. Tseliakhovich talked about his background and passion for space, including helping to open up commercial space.  His work and experience led him to creating Escape Dynamics in 2010 to find a better and more efficient way to space than by using chemical rockets.  Dmitriy then took us through many of the benefits of external launch, including a higher specific impulse, better payload ratios, and even the ability to use an SSTO frame for the vehicle.  During this segment, we also talked about safety issues and using the possibility of using the technology as a space weapon.  During this discussion, Dmitriy was very focused and precise in saying that their systems had to prove out as being safe on all of the issues we were discussing. Next, we learned that the initial beamed propulsion vehicles would be robotic but at some point in the future, eventually crewed launch vehicles would be possible.  We talked about their step by step incremental development and testing plan, including starting with suborbital launches.  I asked our guest about the probable cost of electricity and support from the existing electrical grid.  Our guest had much to say about the cost of electricity, the use of the grid for their power needs & the capability of existing systems to support their needs.  He also did not rule out partnerships with utility companies.  Listeners sent him emails asking about competition and markets as well as the use of hydrogen for fuel.  Our guest was also asked about their heat exchanger, a key component on the vehicle.

In our second segment, Dmitriy was asked about weather issues for launch & we learned that there were concerns and requirements suggesting launching in dry areas would be best.  Another listener asked about ocean launch possibilities & Charles called in expressing skepticism, to support chemical rockets, and to raise questions about the high g force, boost stations, and the size of the ground array needed for the beam propulsion launch system. Roger emailed us to ask about orbital fuel depots & beamed propulsion.  We then talked about the company timeline & learned about 2015 as a suborbital launch target date.  In response to an email about the main challenges, our guest said the challenges to the system were mostly non-technical.  John was our last caller asking about DARPA, project financing, fuels, and more. In closing we talked about available internships and the hiring opportunities at Escape Dynamics.

We welcomed back Dr. Madhu Thangavelu for a 1 hour 45 minute discussion on a wide ranging set of topics from space visionary concepts to HSF to Mars, radiation and other issues, fantasy vs. reality thinking, and the synthetic mind. USC Space Concepts Studio website : http://denecs.usc.edu/hosted/ASTE/527_20111, 4. latest USC Eng. magazine carries an article, p16-17: http://viterbistorage.usc.edu/Public/USCVITERBIMAG.pdf.  In our first segment, Madhu opened up by talking about students and space inspiration.  Based on his own USC teaching experience, he said students were fired up.  Our guest was asked to compare robotic missions to HSF missions and Madhu spent some time on this discussion.  He also talked about the NASA plan to capture an asteroid, referring to this as a possible wild goose chase.  He talked about the ISS and using it more and more to accomplish important space goal.  Madhu received several questions about Tito’s Inspiration Mars flyby mission.  Here, he had much to say, especially about radiation, deep space communications, food & nutrition, and even physiology degradation.  We talked about using nuclear propulsion for such a mission & he suggested a better mission profile using two Falcon rockets.

In the second segment, Paul asked about using nuclear electric propulsion as compared to the two Falcon rocket idea. Madhu talked about the nuclear propulsion history with NERVA & the use of nuclear fuel on many of our robotic missions. Michael called in and said there was no real political will for nuclear so it probably would not happen anytime soon.  Later, Madhu was asked many specific radiation questions regarding the Mars flight.  Madhu suggested possible mitigation strategies, including his favorite, self cellular repair.  Allison emailed in to inquire about his Studio students and how he holds the line from reality thinking as compared to Kool Aid thinking.  Madhu talked extensively about this issue, discussed the philosophy of idea generation, visionary thinking with some fantasy while at the same time being grounded in engineering, physics, financial and other subcomponents of the concept. We welcomed Don Beattie back to the program for this riveting 1 hour 25 minute discussion relating to Don’s experiences and careers with NASA on the Apollo program, NSF, the early days of flight with the U.S. Navy, a Mobil Oil energy expert in Columbia, plus a host of other experiences.  I urge you to buy his book, “No Stone Unturned: A Life Without Bounds” at www.cgpublishing.com then clicking on the Apogee logo link.  We talked about Don’s NASA experiences with the Apollo program for a good part of the first segment as well as the second segment.  Since Don was a geologist, he worked with lunar maps, helped plan the lunar science missions, and even trained the astronauts in geology by going to analog sites with them all over the world.  I asked him about his experiences with the different Apollo crews, his favorite missions & crews, and even to compare the NASA of the Apollo era to the NASA of today.  Don had much to say about the importance of NASA and having a focused mission to carry out.  He was asked about the SLS rocket which he said would be important if we ever go to NEOs or beyond, but he expressed concern over the very low launch rate planned for SLS.  Don was also asked to compare NASA to NSF since he was with both organizations.  Near the end of the first segment, a listener wanted to know about Werner Von Braun and his work with the MSFC.  Don had quite a bit to say about Von Braun and even more about his relationship with MSFC teams. 

In the second segment, the subject of the Boy Scouts and astronauts came up as a result of comments made at the Montana Rocky Mtn College astronaut panel discussions which Don viewed.  Scouting has always had strong representation with the types of people who are attracted to NASA, space exploration, and being an astronaut.  Also in this segment, we talked more about a NASA mission and NASA’s management.  He told us about the NASA management and teams in place during Apollo and stressed that they made the program successful.  Another listener asked what he did during the Apollo 13 mission.  We also talked about the possibility of nuclear electric propulsion.  I asked him for his favorite NASA Administrators and he named two.  Late in the segment, we talked with Don about his energy work, Mobil Oil, Columbia, wind turbans & NASA, and the fracking of wells.  Near the program’s end, a listener asked if had changed any of his views on the ISS per his book, ISScapades from a few years ago.  Don said no, we talked about ISS crew size and the need for the centrifuge which was a priority but never materialized.  At various times during our discussion we talked about our technical capabilities to go to Mars, Mars One, Inspiration Mars, commercial lunar missions, and human medical factors for long term spaceflight.

Contact Dr. Livingston for questions about our copyright and trademark policies.  We welcomed back Dr. Madhu Thangavelu and our new guest, Perry Edmundson to discuss the Cosmic Mariner space cruise ship concept which Perry developed while a graduate student in Dr. Thangavelu’ s Space Exploration Architectures Concept Synthesis Studio.  You can find Perry’s slides and his presentation paper on The Space Show blog.  Our first segment of this nearly two hour discussion covered the basics of the USC class taught by Dr. Thangavelu, including prerequisites and needed student background.  Madhu talked about class objectives & goals along with explaining his methodology in teaching the class.  We then switched over to Perry who began explaining the Cosmic Mariner concept.  If you follow along with his slide presentation which is on the blog, you will see terrific illustrations plus his comments will be supplemented by important visuals.  Perry explained the concept, talked about his design incorporating inflatable modules, the three main elements of style he incorporated in his design, the role of the ISS, and why he decided to make use of the ISS.  As for challenges to bringing the concept to reality, he talked about radiation issues along with other human factors issues.  One issue he zeroed in on dealt with the psychological issues faced by crews on longer missions.  Life support was discussed along with the need for far more powerful propulsion such as nuclear electric propulsion.  Perry spent some time discussing nuclear propulsion and related issues.  Madhu brought up the benefits of using hosted payloads & both our guests talked about SpaceX & its progress toward human spaceflight.
     In our second segment, Perry talked about bandwidth issues and urged the use of optical transmission as a solution path.  Trent asked about the NASA Gateway Program & we talked about using his cruise ship concept to go to Mars.  Perry explained what some of the modifications would have to include to make his concept viable for Mars.  Again, he stressed the human factors challenges.  John from NJ called in to talk about funding issues & challenges.  He also asked why the ISS was being used given it may meet its end in a few more years.  Perry suggested that his concept would provide a new purpose for the ISS.  We talked about the development of new technology for problem solving & were introduced to the concept of “technology evaporation.”

Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright.  You will want to follow the websites along with our guest:  http://csnr.usra.edu/index.html &  www.usra.edu.  If you are interested in the CSNR 2012 Summer Fellowship Program, you can learn more & apply no later than March 9, 2012  from CSNR at  http://csnr.usra.edu/2012_summer_app2.html.  We welcomed Dr. Howe to the program to discuss space nuclear power.  We started out with an overview of both the Center for Space Nuclear Research & the Universities Space Research Association.  Dr. Howe then told us that they were working on nuclear rockets with the Aerojet Corporation, focusing on a new fuel form away from based on tungsten.  During our discussion, he had much to say about this fuel, its advantages, & its testing.  He also talked about ISP & thrust to weight ratios.  He was asked about testing & we learned they plan on doing ground tests at the Nevada Test Site.  Listen to why their tests will be different from earlier nuclear rocket engine tests & how they are expelling the exhaust into the ground.  You will hear There is no radiation, only hydrogen which bleeds into the rock strata.  We also talked about public concern for nuclear power in space, then we shifted our focus to a nuclear rocket mission to Mars.  Dr. Howe told us about the three year Mars mission but also said with a nuclear rocket a one year mission would be possible.  We also talked about the costs for developing the nuclear rocket as well as the possibility of other countries doing it before the U.S.  Next, we talked about the use of uranium & even the possibility of thorium, including why thorium is not useful for weapons. One listener question asked about the Mars Direct method & insitu resource utilization.  Dr. Howe supported the use of insitu but suggested it for later trips as it might be too risky for the initial trips.  He then described their Mars Hopper project which will certainly interest us all.  As this segment ended, we talked about using the nuclear rocket for going to the Moon & for a lunar & even Martian habitat. 

As we started our second segment, Dr. Howe was asked if QuickLaunch could be useful.  Dr. Dewar sent in a clarification note about U-233 as a byproduct of  thorium & why its a problem for weapons.  In talking about a lunar habitat, Dr. Howe told us about the NASA Fission Surface Power Program (FSP).  We also talked about using the new tungsten fuel for habitats.  He told us about the Nuclear Thermal Mars Sample Mission Study that compared the nuclear rocket to Delta IV launches.  Listeners asked about Vasimr & our guest was asked to clarify for us the differences between nuclear electric propulsion & nuclear thermal propulsion & why the latter is preferable.  Dr. Dewar sent in another note to talk about Y-12.  Later, much was said about plutonium & its pending shortage.  Make sure you hear what Dr. Howe had to say about this looming shortage. Near the end, Dr. Howe mentioned his efforts with Hbar Technologies, LLC, suggesting that possibly using these nuclear advancements for medicine, specifically cancer, might be a driver for space applications.
