Welcome to our Open Lines program.  In the first segment of our 1 hour 56 minute discussion, I mentioned the Dark Matter article from The Economist as my friend sent me the actual article.  You can download or read it here:  www.economist.com/news/science-and-technology/21678126-powerful-gamma-rays-centre-milky-way-look-signs-elusive.  John from Fremont called and mentioned the article, then he talked about advanced propulsion, nuclear propulsion, and Vasimir. He wondered if NASA was serious about nuclear propulsion despite a slight increase in the R&D budget for it. He also wanted Dr. Judy Curry to return to the show in light of the Paris Global Warming Conf. going on this week.  I brought up our recent show on NASA’s OCO-2 satellite with guest Dr. David Crisp.  John from Ft. Worth called to talk advanced propulsion and much about Vasimir.  He also brought up global warming and unfortunately I let that topic take up way too much time on the show today.  We also talked about Dr. Jim Dewar coming back to the show on Sunday, Dec. 6 to talk about nuclear propulsion and his book giveaway which I will announce on the show next week.

In the second segment, I described Dr. Dewar’s book which will be the subject of the fundraiser for OGLF.  Dr. Doug from S. California called in to tell us he was considering a Kickstarter project to build a large inflatable simulated lunar hab, probably in Arizona.  Doug described his project, his lunar hab simulation model, his expectations, his cough estimates, plus he wanted Space Show listener feedback on the idea.  Post your feedback on the blog or send it directly to his email address which he gave out on air, or better yet, do both as listeners would like to know the feedback given Doug on this project.  Don’t miss his call and the opportunity to learn about this potential crowdfunding project.  Rick then emailed us to remind us that PISCES in Hawaii was a lunar simulation program.  Before the show ended, Doug emailed in about advanced propulsion, suggesting we start on programs using existing rockets and of course the Falcon Heavy.  I read his note on air, seems to me he is making sense though to really have an efficient and growing space program I believe we need to implement some form of nuclear propulsion, hopefully sooner rather than later.  Adrian emailed us about Vasimir, CO2 atmospheric emissions, and the use of solar power to offset high electrical costs in places such as California.  John from Freemont had the last word with a shout out for Blue Origin and an article on the www.theverge.com with Charles Miller explaining the differences in what Blue Origin did as compared to SpaceX recovering the first stage of the Falcon 9.

We welcomed back Dr. Jim Logan, Dr. John Jurist, and Dan Adamo for a 1 hour 45 minute discussion about humans to Mars and a critique of the  “NASA’s Journey to Marts: Pioneering Next Steps in Space Exploration (Oct. 2015).”  Please note that our program completed in one long segment without a break.  We started off by asking Dr. Logan to summarize the recent New World Space Conference he attended in Austin, Texas.  Jim pointed out that there were lots of young students there and they seemed eager to hear his message and did not consider him a Debbie Downer.  Jim is an evidence based guy when it comes to space policy and programs, he is also well grounded in the sciences and engineering so he does not typically hang out in the usual space cadet la la land of make believe.  We noted that older, more seasoned space cadets often dismiss those with similar messages based on evidence and fact,  but Jim was impressed by the willingness of the younger group to consider evidence and facts. The other guests plus myself had much to say about this particular issue, then we moved on to Dan who wanted to talk about the paper he has uploaded on TSS blog containing his analysis and comments re the NASA Journey to Mars Document. If you have not yet read it, please do so at this time.  For Dan and our guests, there were issues about a poorly defined definition for exploration vs. pioneering, confusing the two in the Journey to Mars document, the need for congressional action to change the mandate to pioneering, then asking for the rational for pioneering or Martian settlement. Much was said about there being no business case or rational case at all for humans to be on the surface of Mars.  This was an overriding theme for the entire discussion.  Our guests kept asking the question, “why are we doing it.?  This referred to humans on the surface of Mars for pioneering purposes.  Note the definitions Dan used for exploration and pioneering earlier in the show.  Note also the differences Dan suggested for exploration.  Our guests talked about the challenges that make Martian settlement or pioneering beyond our reach at this time.  Dr. Jurist brought up radiation and microgravity issues along with other human factor issues.  Dr. Logan supported what John was saying and called for the need to know the gravity prescription.  Without knowing it, we cannot possibly be serious about sending humans to mars.  Our guests talked about nuclear thermal propulsion and several times they referenced the Aquarius Concept (www.spaceenterpriseinstitute.org/tag/aquarius-concept).  Cognitive decline was also discussed as a leading challenge.  The matter of the Twin Study on the ISS with astronaut Scott Kelly came up.  Jim said a sample size of one does not help as it would only lead to insufficient information.  Our guests talked about radiation shielding, its cost, and added mass.  Dan mentioned a recent Aviation Week article from a September issues saying that nuclear propulsion may have a timeline for development around 2022-24.  John had much to say about this.  John also brought up the economy, potential interest rate rises and the impact on space and NASA. Jim said we needed a 10% growth rate for our interplanetary work.  We addressed the economic issues for several minutes as it was an important part of our discussion.  Later, I mentioned the recent interest I was seeing from Space Show listeners regarding the pioneering of Venus with some sort of settlement in the upper atmosphere. Our guests pointed out the pros and cons for this & we contrasted it with pioneering on the surface of Mars.  Joe sent in an email asking for the action plan or steps to be taken to pioneer Mars.  Don’t miss how our guests responded to Joe’s question.  This provided the opening for more discussion about cislunar development.  Here, our guests had much to say, including rescue opportunities, the lack of a redundant vehicle in contrast to even Apollo 8. Dan talked about this issue in technical terms so don’t miss it.  Near the end of the program, SLS came up but in the context of problems with it regarding mass, the stages, Orion, abort and rescue, black zones and more.  Don’t miss what Dan had to say about SLS and technical problems and issues.  The issues Dan raised are not the typical issues one hears discussed when talking SLS.

We welcomed back to the show Dr. Jason Cassibry from the University of Alabama Huntsville to discuss nuclear propulsion of all kinds.  In our initial segment of this 1 hour 30 minute discussion, I first asked Dr. Cassibry about a fusion drive project as reported at www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-jlv1x3ov4.  Dr. Cassibry spoke about the work going on at the University of Washington which was mentioned in the fusion drive video above.  We then talked about transit times to and from Mars and the differences with chemical propulsion, nuclear thermal, and then fusion.  During this discussion, Jason also described the differences in nuclear thermal and nuclear electric propulsion.  A related issue we discussed dealt with the nuclear regulatory environment.  We talked about the nuclear climate, protests, and how best to overcome such protests.  Doug called asking about timelines and said it was moving at such a slow pace, for his projects that he thinks about, he dismisses nuclear propulsion, instead opting for analysis and mission planning using chemical rockets though many are not much further along than a Power Point at this point in time.  Doug also thought it might be easier to do nuclear propulsion by partnering with Russia as they might be easier on the regulatory environment than the U.S.  Our caller asked about ion propulsion and thrusters as well as thermal protection needs.

In the second segment, Jerry emailed about nuclear propulsion in other countries plus more about possible consumer protests.  Ben asked if we could substantially improve chemical rockets and I inquired as to why the recent nuclear program Prometheus was killed.  VASIMIR was next brought up for discussion.  I asked Jason about nuclear accidents in space or on Mars and would they be as destructive as nuclear reactor accidents here on Earth.  Jason provided a most interesting answer saying he thought nuclear reactors in space would be accident proof!  Christine in Dallas suggested we need a better story for more support for nuclear propulsion.  Don’t miss the reply offered by Dr. Cassibry. Near the end of our discussion, I asked our guest about suborbital propulsion.

We welcomed Dr. Robert (Bob) Zubrin back to the program to discuss the upcoming Mars Society 16th Annual Conference, Mars human spaceflight, Inspiration Mars, Curiosity, RAD, radiation levels, Mars One and much more.  For more information about the conference, visit http://www.marssociety.org/conventions/2013.  For information about The Mars Society, visit http://www.marssociety.org/home.  During our one hour discussion with Dr. Zubrin, we started our talking about the main conference speakers including Dennis Tito and Dr. Steven Squyres, among others.  In talking about Dennis Tito coming to the conference, we spent time discussing the Tito Inspiration Mars mission.  Bob had much to say about this mission, the likelihood of mission success, radiation issues, equipment and life support issues, and more.  In talking about radiation and the Curiosity RAD findings, Bob had much to say about NASA and their willingness to do a Mars HSF mission.  We took several listener emails and a call about radiation & even the use of nuclear propulsion to shorten the transit time for less radiation exposure for the crew.  Bob suggested that if we had nuclear propulsion, he would not increase the transit time (listen to his reason why which has to do with orbits & a free return to Earth), but he would increase the payload to take additional spare parts & life support equipment as he said equipment failures were a major risk factor on such a mission.  Bob talked some more about successes in the private sector, including SpaceX. He was also asked if SLS was necessary and he said he believed in more than one source for a launch vehicle and he supports heavy lift.  He also talked about the importance of government infrastructure and launch services for the future.  Don’t miss this discussion.  Later in the segment, Bob talked about the Mars Society 365 Mission (see http://ma365.marssociety.org).  Bob described this mission, why it is so important & why we should support it.  Jane emailed a question about Bob’s National Review article we mentioned, “Remembering Ploesti,” from August 3 (http://nationalreview.com/node/355074/print) and after extrapolating to today, wondered if humanity was ready for human spaceflight to Mars.  Bob provided us with an exceptional response to Jane’s question and comment so please listen and take note of what he said. First is Boeing’s John Elbon who talks about the Boeing commercial space programs.  The next interview is with John Mulholland, also of Boeing, regarding the Space Shuttle, human spaceflight, lessons learned, and the CST 100.  We talked with both Boeing guests about many topics from contracting types to safety, crew abort, launch vehicles, etc.  The final interview is an update on nuclear thermal propulsion and new fuel development with Dr. Robert C. O’Brien of the Center For Space Nuclear Research in Idaho Falls, ID.  Earlier this year, Dr. Howe of the same organization was with us and introduced us to their organization and their nuclear propulsion work.  Dr. O’Brien updated us on their work regarding fuel development, launch characteristics, applications, commercial uses, and more.  Included in our discussion was a detailed segment on why this propulsion is safe, why it is completely different from nuclear weapons as well as nuclear power plants.

Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright.  You will want to follow the websites along with our guest:  http://csnr.usra.edu/index.html &  www.usra.edu.  If you are interested in the CSNR 2012 Summer Fellowship Program, you can learn more & apply no later than March 9, 2012  from CSNR at  http://csnr.usra.edu/2012_summer_app2.html.  We welcomed Dr. Howe to the program to discuss space nuclear power.  We started out with an overview of both the Center for Space Nuclear Research & the Universities Space Research Association.  Dr. Howe then told us that they were working on nuclear rockets with the Aerojet Corporation, focusing on a new fuel form away from based on tungsten.  During our discussion, he had much to say about this fuel, its advantages, & its testing.  He also talked about ISP & thrust to weight ratios.  He was asked about testing & we learned they plan on doing ground tests at the Nevada Test Site.  Listen to why their tests will be different from earlier nuclear rocket engine tests & how they are expelling the exhaust into the ground.  You will hear There is no radiation, only hydrogen which bleeds into the rock strata.  We also talked about public concern for nuclear power in space, then we shifted our focus to a nuclear rocket mission to Mars.  Dr. Howe told us about the three year Mars mission but also said with a nuclear rocket a one year mission would be possible.  We also talked about the costs for developing the nuclear rocket as well as the possibility of other countries doing it before the U.S.  Next, we talked about the use of uranium & even the possibility of thorium, including why thorium is not useful for weapons. One listener question asked about the Mars Direct method & insitu resource utilization.  Dr. Howe supported the use of insitu but suggested it for later trips as it might be too risky for the initial trips.  He then described their Mars Hopper project which will certainly interest us all.  As this segment ended, we talked about using the nuclear rocket for going to the Moon & for a lunar & even Martian habitat. 

As we started our second segment, Dr. Howe was asked if QuickLaunch could be useful.  Dr. Dewar sent in a clarification note about U-233 as a byproduct of  thorium & why its a problem for weapons.  In talking about a lunar habitat, Dr. Howe told us about the NASA Fission Surface Power Program (FSP).  We also talked about using the new tungsten fuel for habitats.  He told us about the Nuclear Thermal Mars Sample Mission Study that compared the nuclear rocket to Delta IV launches.  Listeners asked about Vasimr & our guest was asked to clarify for us the differences between nuclear electric propulsion & nuclear thermal propulsion & why the latter is preferable.  Dr. Dewar sent in another note to talk about Y-12.  Later, much was said about plutonium & its pending shortage.  Make sure you hear what Dr. Howe had to say about this looming shortage. Near the end, Dr. Howe mentioned his efforts with Hbar Technologies, LLC, suggesting that possibly using these nuclear advancements for medicine, specifically cancer, might be a driver for space applications.
