We welcomed Don Nelson back to the show for this 90 minute discussion regarding his Commercial Space Shuttle Freighter (CSS Freighter) concept.  During the first segment, Don provided us with an overview of our current launch and human spaceflight situation, he talked about safety and reliability, then he started describing his CSS Freighter Concept.  You can learn more about it at his website, www.spacetran21.org.  He spent time explaining why wings were needed despite the common misconception that they become worthless mass in space.  He said over and over again that if one does the trades, wings come out far better than carrying additional propellant for a vertical landing.  He also said he was a strong proponent of full reusability, not just first stage reusability.  In response to several questions, he said his CSS Freighter was modeled after the shuttle but with new upgrade designs and technology though to save money and reduce development time, the freighters were to be based on existing technology.  He had much to say about the difficulty they had in upgrading space shuttle systems so this time around he said upgrades would be modular and as close to plug and play as possible.  His idea is that the freighters will be built and operated by the private sector.  He suggested the extensive use of composite materials to save on mass and to use reusable Space Shuttle Main Engines (SMEs).  He referenced the Air Force X-37B program, he talked about the advance state of the thermal protection systems (TPS) for this top secret spacecraft suggesting it would be the TPS of choice for the freighters.  Our guest was challenged in both segments regarding other reusability options including the advancement toward success represented by SpaceX and the Falcon 9.  Don said it was first stage only, he was talking about full vehicle reusability and making the case for his approach with wings.  Don’t miss the challenges and the replies. Don also spelled out the advantages of horizontal as compared to vertical vehicle landing regarding reusability.

In the second segment, BJohn asked about the Soviet version of the shuttle, the Buran.  Don mostly talked about lessons learned by their not having a reusable space shuttle main engine (SME).  Don was asked about international vehicle participation in his freighter project. He said not with this Congress and referenced our policy on not talking with China.  Don was also asked for the rational for doing this and he focused on competition.  Make sure you hear this discussion.  He said he was including the Air Force in his plan given the rapid turnaround time for the vehicle (five days).  He explained the Air Force market in detail and is in touch with key Air Force people.  In addition, he has made presentations to members of Congress and their staffs plus key people at NASA.  I asked him how they responded to the concept.  You don’t want to miss what he said about that.  Alex asked an email question about launch pads and NASA having altered or gotten rid of the shuttle launch pads.  Don said launch pads were not an issue, even suggested foreign launch sites, but did say KSC was a prime launch location in the U.S.  Don attacked expendable rockets over and over again in both segments so Ben from Seattle pressed him as to why his reusable freighter would be more reliable than an expendable rocket.  He said each flight of an expendable rocket was a test flight.  Our guest received a questions about suborbital flight evolving to orbital flight, listeners asked about private Bigelow space stations, and one listener wanted his thoughts on the Skylon.  Tim called in and talked about chemical rockets and rocket fuel. He also inquired about scramjets and Big Dumb Boosters.  Doug called in to challenge his reusability comments citing the Falcon 9 to make his case that wings were wasted mass.  Don’t miss this discussion.  When asked if he thought things would change as a result of the coming elections, he suggested that a new congress would likely terminate SLS given our budget & SLS problems.  Don’t miss the balance of his concluding comments.

We welcomed author and photographer Michael Soluri to the show to discuss his behind the scenes documentary work for STS-125, the final Hubble Space Telescope repair mission and his book, “infinite Worlds.”  During the first segment of our 90 minute discussion, Michael provided us with the background on how he was able to go inside NASA, be with the STS-125 crew, and photographically document all aspects of the final Hubble Space Telescope Repair Mission.  His book “Infinite Worlds” is truly a behind the scenes photographic documentation of this mission, a must have book as you will hear me say throughout the program.  Remember, if you buy it through TSS/OGLF Amazon portal detailed on all archived programs and both websites, Amazon makes a contribution to TSS.OGLF.  Listeners asked Michael many questions about the STS-125 crew regarding risk, safety, the rescue mission that was on the pad ready to go and more.  Michael also told us about asking the veteran crew members about the quality of light in space so better space pictures could be made.  This led to a workshop where Michael helped the crew in looking at things in space differently to get better and different pictures.  Michael talked about the support he got from Goddard, seeing the training in the Hi Bay clean room and even meeting and talking with the crew families.  We talked about the initial mission cancellation, then the reinstatement by Mike Griffin.  Michael also worked in his early documentation work on the New Horizons mission to Pluto, a mission he is still documenting as we await the July 2015 arrival at the planet.  He was also asked about the James Webb Space Telescope  and if he thought it might take up and continue in our culture as much as Hubble has been a part of our culture.

In the second segment, we talked about on orbit servicing and the essay in his book by the father of on orbit servicing, Frank Cepollina.  Michael then told about the Hubble tools and how unique and artistic they were being all rounded with features designed for use when wearing a pressure glove in space, not for use here on Earth.  He also told us about being able to photograph the tools in the Hi Bay which he did as objects of art.  Later on in the segment, we talked about the end of the space shuttle, the modern capsules replacing it from SpaceX and the other companies, and the difference with a transportation system which is what is being developed today and the space system which has been lost due to the shuttle retirement.  Michael was asked by another listener about the space entrepreneurs.  He has not had contact with them but says they are different from earlier space venture participants as they are all about business and making money and the business types don talk about “poetry.”  Our guest was asked about NASA public outreach and inspiration and for the most part he said that we had to do that for space, not NASA.  We need to be persistent, to inspire, to be passionate.  He said not expect those within the organization to do it.  The taxpayers themselves need to do it.  Michael offered us interesting concluding comments and thoughts so don’t miss what he had to say.

John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Jeff Foust for the first ten minutes of our special edition Hotel Mars program. Our second guest was Doug Messier for the second half of the program.  During the first segment with Dr. Foust, we talked about the latest news on the recent Orbital Sciences Antares rocket failure.  It seems that Orbital Sciences is going to phase out the AJ26 rocket motor, replace it with a yet unidentified motor, and possibly do some short term launches of cargo to the ISS on an alternative rocket.  In the second segment, Doug Messier of www.parabolicarc.com was our guest to discuss the latest news regarding the SpaceShipTwo accident.  Doug talked about the NTSB investigation and disclosure about the on-off switch for the vehicles feather system, we talked about Virgin Galactic safety and the type of data that was collected which will assist the NTSB in the investigation.

We welcomed Trent Waddington to the program to discuss his take on the recently concluded NewSpace 2013 Conference.  Check out the conference website for information, video archives and more:  http://newspace.spacefrontier.org.  In the first segment of this 2 hour five minute program, Trent went day by day, speaker and panel in his critique of the NewSpace Conference as he took elaborate notes during the sessions.  For this analysis, Trent commented on most of the programming starting out with his initial comments on public/private partnerships & the successful role of the Space Frontier Foundation (SFF) over the years in influence and possibly winning in the commercial space policy debate.  Rather than telling you what Trent had to say about the speakers and panels, I urge you to listen to his comments so nothing is taken out of context in terms of what he said and thought about conference specifics.  During the first segment, Trent covered the first two days of the conference.

In the second segment, Trent started with the early morning talk given by Rick Tumlinson, then the talk about 3D printing regarding Made in Space, then we talked about the video the Foundation made, “There Is Another Way,” to support the Foundation’s perspective of commercial space development, heavy lift, etc.  You can see the 6 minute plus video at http://spacefrontier.org/thereisanotherway.  I read one of the Foundation’s promotion letters regarding the video and then Trent and I discussed it.  I reported on the feedback I’ve received via email since the video was first shown at the conference Saturday morning up to the start of this Space Show program.  Trent had a different take on the video from having seen it at the conference and also having talked to those present for their perspectives.  I urge each of you to watch it. Post your comments on it on The Space Show blog.  After the video discussion, Trent commented on the balance of conference speakers throughout the day, then he reported on space work in Australia which focuses on research and on scram jet development and testing.  His conference conclusions and assessments were interesting, including his use of the term “NewSpace Fanatics.”  Listeners asked him for his takeaways from the conference for which he offered us three so don’t miss what he had to say.  When Trent left San Jose, he drove to Hawthorne and toured SpaceX.  He had much to say about touring SpaceX which I must say, having done it several times myself, is really impressive and inspiring.

We welcomed back to the program Dr. Dennis Bushnell, the NASA Langley Research Center Chief Scientist.  Dr. Bushnell discussed his paper, “Advanced-to-Revolutionary Space Technology Options-The Responsibly Imaginable.” which can be downloaded at http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/20130011698_2013011376.pdf.  In the first segment of our 1 hour 26 minute show, Dr. Bushnell summarized the findings in his paper and talked about how we are still building on technologies from the 50’s and 60’s that were based on “living better with chemistry” and ICBMs.  We began talking about advanced propulsion including nuclear, but our guest made it clear throughout our discussion that what was needed was a reduction in the cost of space access by a magnitude of 10, not by two which is what is happening with new commercial rockets coming on line.  In fact, later in the show when discussing commercial space, Dr. Bushnell was clear that to close a commercial space business plan the reduction in launch costs by a factor of ten was absolutely essential!  I asked our guest to tell us where the bottlenecks were and he said it was in the culture & big cultural changes were required to move forward.  He also talked about the need to experiment and try lots of options and ideas, to triage them, down select, fly them, and choose the best based on the engineering process he described.  We talked about the low technology readiness level (TRL) of many of today’s space ideas and technologies, that we have become focused on instant or near instant gratification but that the process he was talking about would extend over a 25 year period.  Given this, his paper is a frank and factual discussion of many of our space industry segments, a no nonsense, no Kool Aid TRL analysis of much of what we talk about and say we can now do in space or will be doing in the near term.  Safety was discussed, including microgravity, radiation, plus a mention of unknowns regarding what we already know about gut bacteria exposed to radiation given our limited amount of research on this topic to date. A listener asked him about physics as a main reason for space exploration and contrasted that to settlement as the main reason for HSF. Another listener asked him about his mentioning USAF comments that indicated space was a mature and declining industry.  We began talking about commercial space, but we talked about it through the second segment as well.  In this segment, Dennis talked about how we have created economic growth in the past but now we have not only the challenge of economic growth but sustainable jobs and sustaining our standard of living.  Terraforming Mars was discussed as part of our discussion about Inspiration Mars and Mars One HSF missions to Mars.  As this segment ended, a listener asked him about suborbital space and citizen science projects.

In the second segment, John Hunt called in to talk about the high cost of many advanced space technologies, plus he wanted updates on LENR (this used to be called cold fusion).  Dr. Bushnell had much to say about LENR and it potential, we talked about Rossi, and the NASA work being done to better understand LENR effects. With an understanding of it, funding would not be as big a problem as it is today.  He also said LENR had the potential to be transmutational.  Our guest suggested that for more information, we visit the Larsen LENR slideshow:  www.slideshare.net/lewisglarsen/slideshows.  Again, he pointed to cultural issues as major stumbling blocks to this research.  In returning to the focus of his paper, he said there was no shortage of ideas but the culture was preventing them from being tried, tested, and exploited.  Rocket reusability was brought up, our guest mentioned the SpaceX Grasshopper work, and he was asked about SLS and fuel depots.  I asked about BLEO issues and radiation.  In response to another question, he said that were he the space guru, he would focus on “energy” and structural materials. You will want to hear this discussion. Later, Tim called from Huntsville about radiation and HSF to Mars, as well as the economics of the Big Dumb Booster.  I asked Dennis about the target audience for his paper and he said it was meant for NASA and the world since space fairing is a world endeavor. He again talked about potential revolutionary technologies which are needed and which would benefit all of us.  He repeated that we must do the difficult and take the risk and invest.  We also need to look forward with multiyear planning.  Near the end of the program, Dennis was asked about space elevators which he was not enthusiastic about.  Again, he repeated that we needed to make investments to raise our TRL levels.  At the end, I asked why space does not rise to importance in presidential campaigns & elections.  He said space was very good as an Earth utility but beyond that, there was no clear basis for most of it and that was the problem. Don’t miss his comments on this topic.  Our final topic was his assessment of commercial space given his years spent working on it with NASA including budgets into the hundreds of millions to find a way to close a commercial space business case for commercializing the ISS and other things.  This is a very important short discussion, don’t miss it.

Welcome to Part One of taped interviews made while I was attending the AIAA Space 2012/CASE Conference in Pasadena, CA.  I was assisted in these interviews by Space Show supporter and listener, Dr. Doug Plata.  Part One has three interviews. First is Boeing’s John Elbon who talks about the Boeing commercial space programs.  The next interview is with John Mulholland, also of Boeing, regarding the Space Shuttle, human spaceflight, lessons learned, and the CST 100.  We talked with both Boeing guests about many topics from contracting types to safety, crew abort, launch vehicles, etc.  The final interview is an update on nuclear thermal propulsion and new fuel development with Dr. Robert C. O’Brien of the Center For Space Nuclear Research in Idaho Falls, ID.  Earlier this year, Dr. Howe of the same organization was with us and introduced us to their organization and their nuclear propulsion work.  Dr. O’Brien updated us on their work regarding fuel development, launch characteristics, applications, commercial uses, and more.  Included in our discussion was a detailed segment on why this propulsion is safe, why it is completely different from nuclear weapons as well as nuclear power plants.

Walt had much to say about risk during the Apollo era as compared to now.  We extrapolated from this discussion to Columbia’s foam issues. We talked about commercial space.  Walt suggested that today’s commercial space efforts were not purely commercial given government funding & missions. He also said that retiring the shuttle when we did was a big mistake.  He then took us through a cost analysis process to illustrate that space is & always will be costly.  At the end of the first segment, one way trips to Mars & reality TV show funding were mentioned.

In the second segment, Terry called with questions about Von Braun. Walt had high praise & much to say about Von Braun & his experiences with him.  Commercial space came up again & I asked him about asteroid mining.  He did not think it would be a good investment & talked about the need to pay attention to the laws of physics.  We talked about He3 on the Moon, fusion energy possibilities & more.  I read an email from a London listener asking about the Apollo rocket & mission sounds on Apollo 7.  We talked some more about the problems on board Apollo 7, this time regarding Wally & the TV broadcast delay & the wearing of the newly designed helmets during reentry.  Walt talked about climate change & global warming, urging people to do their own research & examine the data rather than believing what people had to say regardless of their position.  John in Atlanta called in about global warming & said that there was no practical mitigation strategy. Our guest shared what he perceived to be the true motivation of global warming extremists.  John also talked about having built a next gen space shuttle from the old space shuttle to avoid retiring it or having to build an entirely new & very costly program.  Walt supported that idea but history proved otherwise.  Toward the end we discussed the pros & cons of international cooperation & competition, Ares 1 as a safe rocket for HSF, & the cost of the ISS being more due to international cooperation.  Our final topic was risk versus reckless behavior & the difference between the two.

Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright.  We welcomed back to The Space Show Rick Searfoss to discuss spaceflight flying, XCOR Aerospace, the Lynx, and much more.  You can learn more about Rick Searfoss by visiting his website, www.astronautspeaker.com.  For more about the Lynx and XCOR, visit www.xcor.com.  We started our discussion with an overview of a successful test flight program.  During this discussion, our guest made it clear that flight tests are supposed to detect the unknown and to catch problems in time for them to be fixed prior to surfacing during commercial operations.  The test pilot is prepared for the unknown and this is why he later said that future XCOR pilots would need to have U.S. military test pilot school experience along with their military flight experience.  Also, the testing starts out very slow and escalates based on the progress and analysis of the tests.  One crawls before one runs, so to speak.  I asked him to compare a spaceship test flight program to information I had on a new Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental Jetliner that Boeing was putting through 600 flight hours of flight tests (www.examiner.com/article/new-boeing-747-8-intercontinental-maiden-flight).  Don’t miss this discussion, its interesting, important, & relevant.  Col. Searfoss received an email from Jeremy asking about humans riding on solid rocket boosters (SRB) and the safety in doing that.  This resulted in another interesting discussion.  We then talked about piston pump technology, suborbital flight, turbo pumps, and the XCOR program working with ULA regarding hydrogen pumps.  I asked Rick to describe the Lynx flight from the passenger perspective.  Doug wanted to know about the first flight timeline for later this year and then Christine wrote in asking if the Lynx cockpit would have dual controls similar to an airplane.  A question came in about the Chinese rendezvous & docking per their current mission & Rick’s take on the process given his space shuttle pilot experience.  Rick talked about this with the shuttle in some detail.

In our second segment, Terry called in to ask about the XCOR flight software.  As you will hear, XCOR flight software means humans.  Listen to what he had to say about this, including issues with space shuttle software.  Our guest then talked more about the flight readiness process including the Technical Review Board and Safety Review Board process.  Other topics discussed included citizen science on board the Lynx, ITAR issues, additional Lynx pilot qualifications, and defense dept. applications for Lynx and the suborbital industry.  Lee called in to ask about an evolution to an orbital vehicle, other questions came in regarding runway requirements, passenger height & weight requirements, and spaceports.  Near the end of our discussion, we talked about an emergency exit from the Lynx, spacesuits and bailout.  Also discussed throughout the program were suggestions for the passenger to better prepare for his/her flight.
