We welcomed back to the show Dr. Doug Haynes for updates with his Haynes Saucer, Blue Ridge Nebula Starline, Blue Nebula company and his work to fly to Mars offering airline like service.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 16 minute program, Doug went over the history of his aviation and space business development.  He talked about Phase 1 in the 70s, Phase 2 in the 90s, and Phase 3 which is his current phase.  He said his Haynes Saucer was certified by the FAA and the number was 7111NH.  He also talked about his previous work with DARPA and composites.  In response to a listener email, he said he currently had an experimental certification but would transfer to a regular certification soon.  Jack asked him about visiting his facilities. Doug suggested attending his Open House programs which he holds a few times a year. He also talked about the potential of private visits to his Colorado facilities.  I asked him about the size of his operations and how many people he employed.  Doug listed the positions and team spots & said he was still growing.  Terry asked him about his saucer propulsion. Doug said it had three different aspects to it but in general it was ion propulsion with constant 1 g acceleration using gravitics. He said his hover craft used tip drive.  Later, I asked how he generated electricity for his saucer.  Don’t miss his response to this question.  Shelly asked him about human medical factors such as microgravity, radiation, etc.  He said he does not worry much about them due to his very fast transit times with his advanced gravitic propulsion.  Again, don’t miss his full response to this question.  As for vehicle size, it is roughly 9 passengers or less with a crew size of 2, all in his ejection pod which you can see in the pictures on the website as a huge glass like bubble on the top of the saucer.

 

In the second segment, he was asked about his pilots having space flight experience.  He said this was not necessary given they are running an airline plus his very fast propulsion.  Don’t miss all of what he had to say on this.  Clark in Chicago emailed in about the need for heavy lift re payloads & useful payloads to Mars.  He said he was running an airline so he goes orbit to orbit but again, don’t miss all of what he had to say n this topic.  He did explain how passengers would get to the Martian surface, then he was asked if he was cooperating or at least talking to other space companies for participation.  He mentioned Mars One several times as a possibility.  The next subject was ticket prices.  He explained that he was pricing his tickets using the same format as airlines, revenue per passenger mile.  He was going to charge $5 per revenue mile.  I pointed out what it would cost to do a one way 60 million mile flight (not including trajectory distance for reasons you will understand when hearing this conversation), then later he said he would be charging a flat fee of $2 million for the trip.  Spaceports were the next topic as he has been working on establishing the Colorado Space Port at the Front Range Airport near Denver International.  Doug talked about horizontal takeoff and landing only, his escape pod, his takeoff, igniting his engines about 45,000 feet to go to space.  Wayne asked about the Dept. of Defense interest in his project and he said he had been in touch with DOD officials and those channels were open.  Near the end of the show, I asked Doug to explain his E-drive AAMPP which he did.

Tim was not constrained by reality, physics, or engineering. His only limitations had to do with his imagination. Sit back and let your imagination go and enjoy the Victorian Space Age stories and times and the amazing images that Tim has produced to illustrate the stories. In our first segment, Tim introduced us to his storyline comprising Tales From An Alternate History. In addition, if you follow along with us on Tim’s Victorian Space Age website, he tells you how to access story lines he is discussing, how to see the illustrations, and to follow the time lines. I strongly suggest you listen to this show and follow along on the website. The first storyline we talked about focused on his book, “Terraforming Venus.” Tim introduced us to the main characters, the propulsion technology, and how Venus was terraformed by figuring out how to change the rotation period to match Earth’s rotation of a 24 hour day. Note again all of this is pure fantasy so let your imagination run wild as Tim details the Victorian Space Age for us, starting with activity on Venus. Later in the segment, Tim was asked how he handled life support issues, microgravity, spacesuits, and more. Given the Victorian Space Age and fantasy, Tim was not constrained by the realities of space travel so the Victorian Space Age space program could do just about anything in space. He also introduced us to silicon based life, to aliens, and in the second segment aliens become more a part of the timelines. In responding to a question about rockets, Tim said rockets were the mainstay of the space program in this period, even for interstellar travel. Don’t miss how he designed interstellar travel for this period. A listener asked if the Victorian Space Age was a private or commercial project or government run program. He said it was government but the US let down in some areas so the European Consortium stepped forward for Mars travel. Before the segment ended, he told us how he modeled a character regarding Mars travel after Dr. Robert Zubrin.

In the second segment, John from Ft. Worth called us to talk physics, fantasy and more. Additional clarification was given us on the European Consortium and Mars with Tim telling us how to access the Mars information on the website by going to the specific timeline and then to specific pages within the timeline. In response to another question, Tim said he has completed 32 stories but hopes to complete a total of 60 such short stories and four books. Other topics Tim was asked about included the use of airships during this time period, spaceports, gravity & radiation issues. Tim was later asked if any of the alien inhabitants on other planets got angry and attacked Earth. He said yes. He was also asked if different species mated with humans to create another species and he said yes, that too was in his alternate history. Dr. Doug emailed about science fiction and fantasy & wondered about readers wasting time with the fantasy, time that was not spent benefitting humanity. Note Tim’s response to Doug’s question plus my comments. I suggested not everything in space had to do with benefitting humanity and I loved a good fantasy and entertainment. Tim’s work is certainly that, no questions asked. Tim mentioned that being off world was a frequent concept he used as in his alternate history as humans were and are not confined to Earth. Later, Tim was asked about nuclear power in steampunk, how he dealt with health, illness, disease and related items in his timelines, then Tim from Huntsville called to ask Tim questions about writing a book and overcoming writer’s block. Tim concluded our discussion by focusing on “Terraforming Venus,” his alternate history timeline, his website, and his Facebook page.

We welcomed back Mark Bray to the program to discuss the role of space policy in his congressional campaign.  During the first segment of our 91 minute program, Mark explained why he was running for congress as an Independent candidate for the 5th District in Alabama.  We quickly focused in on the role of space in his congressional race.  In addition, is space a priority issue, how much of one, and in his district, how space aware are the voters.  I asked Mark about aerospace engineers and other engineers in the U.S. Congress.  I doubt you will be surprised the demographics Mark shared with us.  I also asked Mark for his committee choices should he win and how easy it might be for him to get a seat on one of the science, technology & space committees.  Mark talked about commercial space, the support for it in the Huntsville area, and public/private partnerships.  The art of compromise was discussed & our guest noted the absence of it in congress.  Mark explained the assets a engineer brings to the table in complex decision making and why that background is well suited for being in congress.  Since Mark works on SLS in his engineering job, of course he got a few questions about it.  I wanted to know if members of the public asked or commented to him one way or the other on SLS & its future.  He said SLS comments, when he got them, were more general.  Judy sent in a note about a video on his website, http://www.brayforcongress.com, which focused on the NASA culture of the 60s.  Mark said he was focusing on the new, young NASA that could take on the near impossible and do things because it was not yet a tried and proven member of the government bureaucracy. Today, NASA is the bureaucracy and because of that, it operates differently.  His comments were interesting, don’t miss them.  Bob asked Mark about the private sector creating jobs as opposed to the claims that the public sector creates the job.  Again, don’t miss his reply.  Dr. Rowe asked a question about making astronaut medical data more freely available to researchers, wanting to know if Congress could make such data more readily available.

In the second segment, Mark said he wanted to establish himself as the go to guy on space issues for congress.  Greg called in to talk about why space matters as a national issue.  Tim from Huntsville was the last caller on the program.  He brought up needed ITAR reform to which Mark said there were meaningful reforms on the table that he supports.  He then brought up spaceports and launch restrictions, then I asked our guest to rank campaign priorities including the economy, healthcare, foreign policy, Ebola, ISIS, Russia, and space.  Mark said the economy trumped all issues but listen to see where space is on this list.

We welcomed back Erik Seedhouse to the program to discuss the new Second Edition of “Tourists In Space: A Practical Guide.”  In our first segment of our 1 hour 26 minute show, Erik told us that the second edition was about 80% new and that it would be released the end of August.  If you buy the book on Amazon, you can order it at the special pre-release price.  Also, be sure to use the OGLF portal explained in the archive summary statement, on the blog and on both TSS & OGLF websites.  If you purchase it using the OGLF portal, Amazon makes a contribution to The Space Show.  Erik opened with the manual part of the book and mentioned his suborbital training company, Suborbital Training located in Melbourne, Florida.  For more information on suborbital training, visit http://www.suborbitaltraining.com.  Next, Erik talked about the flight profiles for both the XCOR Lynx and the Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo.  I asked Erik for the top 3 or 4 challenges to the industry and he cited space safety as the largest challenge to overcome.  Other top challenges included the spaceship noise which will be very loud, vibrations, acceleration, and space motion sickness.  He talked about the impact mostly on the cardiac system.  Erik was asked about the use of spacesuits with by the various companies.  We also discussed orbital space tourism using the Dragon and then later using the Dream Chaser.  Erik was asked if spaceflight participant medical exams would be done by special doctors or one’s own doctor even if the doctor has no aerospace expertise or experience.  Before the break & in response to a question, Erik pointed out that the industry was on hold given the all the earlier “cry wolf” announcements about starting revenue flights.

 

In the second segment, Erik talked about going to space at the designated and approved altitude by the FAI in France, the official international record and standards keeping organization for space issues.  He pointed out that 50 miles was not space.  We talked some about the World View project, then our topic switched to spaceports here in the U.S. as well as those planned for outside the country. Erik raised some red flags given the spaceships are under ITAR control which might make it very difficult for them to be operated in a foreign country under present ITAR rules/regulations.   Orbital tourism came up for Dream Chaser, Dragon V2 and the Bigelow Aerospace habs.  In speaking about the industry, our guest pointed out how SpaceX was changing spaceflight by their success.  The Brownsville, TX proposed SpaceX spaceport got lots of discussion time and email questions.  Erik pointed out two commercial spacesuit design companies, Orbital Outfitters and Final Frontier Design.  Near the end of our program, point to point transportation was discussed as were the potential winners in the upcoming commercial crew NASA down select process.

We welcomed Rob Lowe to the program to introduce us to and discuss ShipInSpace, a new entry in the suborbital space tourism industry.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 24 minute program, Mr. Lowe introduced us to ShipInSpace, he described their proposed space tourist flight adventure program, we talked about the vehicle, the entry and reentry g forces, the stacking system for passenger pods and the safety escape system.  Rob also described a typical parabolic flight profile for ShipInSpace once it starts operations in five years.  Rob answered questions about vehicle safety and certification, their two year passenger training program, the vertical launch and horizontal landing design, the hatch closure and opening procedures, plus the use of space suits for the occupants, and their pricing model which is significantly lower than their competition.  Rob also addressed listener questions about ShipInSpace financing, budgets, and the start of ticket sales.  Crowd funding was brought up in the financial discussion, our guest was asked about the competition not only from Virgin and XCOR but from other companies in the U.S., Canada, and across Europe. One of our listeners in India wanted to know how ShipInSpace was different from the AXE APOLLO space project.

In the second segment, Rob was asked about choosing one’s pod mates for the flight given each stacked pod had room for four passengers.  We also learned that initially the flight frequency would be weekly but that might increase over time.  Rob digressed to tell us about his book which is available on Amazon, “The Eccentric Universe.”  Remember, if you buy the book using The Space Show/OGLF Amazon portal (instructions are in all show summaries on the website and the blog plus the blog has a specific link to our Amazon portal), Amazon will make a donation to The Space Show/OGLF.  His book sounds most interesting so check it out. Later, our guest was asked about the possibility of their using Spaceport America and our guest indicated that it was a possibility, as was the use of spaceports in Europe and elsewhere.  Near the end of our discussion, Rob gazed forward with an assessment of the potential of a future space tourism and development industry, then a listener asked them about plans to move toward orbital tourism.  We asked our guest about their proposed flight test program, Point to Point transportation, and a few more questions about their competition.  The last listener sent in an email saying he was a skeptic and wondered about their Plan B if the marketing survey they are counting on turned out to be invalid.  In response he said that the company and the spacecraft were designed to do other types of mission so not to worry. He also cited the demand Mars One has experienced in opening up the application process for their mission as solid evidence of the interest in space tourism and travel.

We welcomed Dr. Dmitriy Tseliakhovich, CEO & CTO of Escape Dynamics (http://escapedynamics.com) to discuss their work on making microwave beamed propulsion possible for space launch.  During our 1 hour 39 minute discussion, Dr. Tseliakhovich talked about his background and passion for space, including helping to open up commercial space.  His work and experience led him to creating Escape Dynamics in 2010 to find a better and more efficient way to space than by using chemical rockets.  Dmitriy then took us through many of the benefits of external launch, including a higher specific impulse, better payload ratios, and even the ability to use an SSTO frame for the vehicle.  During this segment, we also talked about safety issues and using the possibility of using the technology as a space weapon.  During this discussion, Dmitriy was very focused and precise in saying that their systems had to prove out as being safe on all of the issues we were discussing. Next, we learned that the initial beamed propulsion vehicles would be robotic but at some point in the future, eventually crewed launch vehicles would be possible.  We talked about their step by step incremental development and testing plan, including starting with suborbital launches.  I asked our guest about the probable cost of electricity and support from the existing electrical grid.  Our guest had much to say about the cost of electricity, the use of the grid for their power needs & the capability of existing systems to support their needs.  He also did not rule out partnerships with utility companies.  Listeners sent him emails asking about competition and markets as well as the use of hydrogen for fuel.  Our guest was also asked about their heat exchanger, a key component on the vehicle.

In our second segment, Dmitriy was asked about weather issues for launch & we learned that there were concerns and requirements suggesting launching in dry areas would be best.  Another listener asked about ocean launch possibilities & Charles called in expressing skepticism, to support chemical rockets, and to raise questions about the high g force, boost stations, and the size of the ground array needed for the beam propulsion launch system. Roger emailed us to ask about orbital fuel depots & beamed propulsion.  We then talked about the company timeline & learned about 2015 as a suborbital launch target date.  In response to an email about the main challenges, our guest said the challenges to the system were mostly non-technical.  John was our last caller asking about DARPA, project financing, fuels, and more. In closing we talked about available internships and the hiring opportunities at Escape Dynamics.

We welcomed Dr. Philip Metzger to the program to discuss the topic of a coming space resource revolution because of the prospects for a rapid advancement of robotic industry in space.  Please visit his website at www.philipmetzger.com. During our first segment of this two hour five minute program, Dr. Metzger explained the need for space resource usage as a result of a growing Earth population, increasing energy demands, industrialization & an overall feeling of being “squeezed” regarding future demand and resource usage.  From this point, he took us through the technologies, advancements and some visionary plans for setting up a commercial industry in space for space mining robotics and ISRU technologies which are available today.  Dr. Metzger was clear in telling us that the NASA charter was about exploration, not starting up space industry.  We then talked about the ways that industry can access the advance technology created by the NASA exploration and science programs.  Our guest provided us with several robotic examples, including the possibility of making heat shields from Phobos materials which could go a long way toward making a Mars mission affordable.  We talked about technology readiness levels, TRL 1-9.  Phil explained what the various levels meant & how the technology development is passed on to the next development group as the level advances.  I asked our guest to describe a typical day in his lab.  Starting at 6:45AM, Dr. Metzger described his duties and functions and those of the rest of the lab workers.  As you will hear, it’s a mixture of administrative, design, computer work, testing, retesting, & equipment manufacturing.  3D Printing was discussed in some detail and was actually a discussion topic throughout the entire program.  We talked about our being able to repair robotics as compared to building the robotics to avoid needing repair.  Listener Mike sent in an email to inquire about 3D printing, teleoperated & AI robotics for self sustaining lunar/asteroid economies. He also wanted to know how human space exploration fit into the robotic model.  Phil had much to say in response to Mike so don’t miss this discussion. Near the end of this segment, we talked about robotics & the communications time delay, even for the Moon, and what this means for HSF & robotic development. Another concept introduced to us was that of self-sustaining robots that do not need to continue being launched to their destination! Near the end of this segment, Phil introduced us to Lizard Scale Robotics & the different categories going up the scale of robotic development to the top level human scale.

In our second segment, Doug called in from S. California to inquire about starting an affordable industry, financing, and the use of lunar propellant ice.  This took us to a discussion of setting up profitable ventures for space industry development. Phil talked about a new spaceport concept starting with spaceports here on the ground, then in LEO, on the Moon, & then moving out to Phobos.  For a profitable venture, he did say the time line was still too long for capital investment so we discussed public/private partnerships. Also in this segment, we talked hardware designs, the need to start with low technology, even clumsy robots and evolve upward, but avoiding launches & most everything being made in space. We talked about launch capabilities, heavy lift, & getting a specific mass to where it needed to go.  Closing the business case came up & our guest talked about the old “impoverished view” as compared to a new, expanded, multi-potential global view. Don’t miss this discussion.  Mike sent in another note about what it might mean to be second & the value of the exponential potential.  Phil took us through this discussion which made it crystal clear why maintaining our space leadership or being part of it on an international partnership level was so important for our future.  In this context, Dr. Metzger talked about widespread participation in space development for multiple co-owners.

We welcomed Robert Sackheim to the program to discuss NASA, commercial space, the current state of rocket propulsion and advancements in the field.  During our first segment of this 1 hour 47 minute discussion, Mr. Sackheim talked about his background and experience at TRW, NASA MSFC, and his current consulting.  I asked him several questions about the current state of rocket propulsion. Bob had much to say about this, focusing on chemical rocket propulsion, satellite propulsion, electric propulsion, and the need for nuclear propulsion.  He talked about booster rockets, various rocket stages and their propulsion, rocket engines, and even SRBs.  Several questions came in asking him if we had the current technology for HSF to Mars or even the Inspiration Mars flyby mission talked about so much in the recent press.  Listeners wanted to know if our current levels of propulsion were up to the task.  After a rather thorough propulsion discussions, Bob turned to commercial space, lowering total space mission costs, regulatory policy, and commercial spaceports.  He also talked about budget issues and raised the question a few times as to why ten NASA centers were needed given their often overlapping, competitive, and duplicate work.

In our second segment, commercial space took the lead with a discussion on public/private partnerships & the belief that Americans can do anything if we set our mind to it, including space travel.  Of course here the problem as we know lies in leadership and today it appears that leadership in space & other areas is sparse at best.   Bob then focused on geo satellites and the increasing development and capabilities applicable to cubesats.  HSF came up for discussion as did the robotic missions. You might be surprised by what our guest had to say about HSF.  Other issues in this segment included the lunar space elevator, the congressional and NASA track record in canceling ongoing projects & taking lessons from history, SSP, & ways to reform & move NASA forward.  Bob spoke about evolving toward the old NACA model.  I asked about the impact of space advocacy from his perspective given his leadership experience and past positions in leading organizations and projects.  We also asked him about space tourism and hybrid rocket engines. He had much to say about hybrids, don’t miss the discussion.  Bob talked about the Falcon rockets, testing including static fire tests, and SRBs as related to the Constellation project and safety.  Toward the end, our guest was asked about NewSpace, fuel depots, & cryo transfer.  For closing comments, he talked about commercial space being the way to go & the path to our space future.

We welcomes Bob Zimmerman back for a two hour wide ranging discussion on space news, company updates, sequestration, policy, and more.  Be sure to check out his blog, http://behindtheblack.com.   Bob started out talking about the e-book release of his book, “Genesis, The Story of Apollo 8.”  He then talked about the upcoming Falcon 9 launches, their importance and significance.  Bob mentioned ILS and the Proton rocket which is having its problems causing insurance rates to rise. He said the Russians will absorb all insurance cost increases to keep Proton at a price advantage point.  This opened the door to a discussion about SpaceX and price competiveness in the launch industry.  Bob switched gears to the suborbitals and said we should be seeing Virgin powered tests soon.  He also talked about Stratolaunch per a recent Parabolic Arc article.  Bob was talking reusability and the RLV so I asked him if he was aware of economic analysis and data that was not supportive of an RLV short of a substantial increase in launch demand. Bob had much to say about this with his opinion. The RLV economic issue continued to be discussed in both segments of our program. Tim called in about it as well.  We talked about Sen. Rubio and his budget amendment suggesting NASA divest itself of unused assets & use the saved money for commercial space.  Bob then brought up sequestration and the announcement that NASA will be shutting down all public outreach but they will keep their PR arm going for their projects and missions.  We also mentioned Sarah Brightman and both her ISS and Virgin space tourism efforts.  Near the close of this segment, Inspiration Mars was discussed and as you will hear, Bob is skeptical, citing human factors & other reasons for his opinion.  Larry asked about North Korean rockets and threats to the U.S. west coast.  Bob said he took them seriously though their rocket was not yet ready for prime time. Bob also threw in Iranian rockets and threats and said he was more concerned about advances by Iran than N. Korea at this time.

In segment two, we talked about both the science side of NASA and the HSF side.  I’m sure you will find the comparison and mission summaries of interest.  John called in from Atlanta to raise yet again the question of reusability.  He thought it would be enhanced with the use of orbiting fuel depots. Bob was skeptical.  Don’t miss this discussion.  I asked both Bob and John about Inspiration Mars, Jim emailed in a comment about Falcon 1 relative to comments being made by Bob, and we talked about the upcoming Orbital Sciences Antares launch.  We got into the subject of risk taking and Bob and I talked about mining risks as well as caving risks.  As Bob is an accomplished caver, he had much to say about both mining and caving.  Near the end, we got a call about various spaceports in different states and spaceport commercial success so far.  Bob concluded saying that we are in an unstable world which could absolutely adversely impact all aspects of space and commercial space development and progress.
