We welcomed Doug Messier back to the program.  During the first segment of our nearly two hour show, Doug started off by telling about his current multi-part series running this past week on www.paraboloicarc.com regarding Virgin Galactic and SpaceShipTwo.  Given the accident happened slightly more than a year ago, Doug put together a comprehensive series of articles on the accident, the pilots, the NTSB report, Virgin Galactic, Scaled and more.  This is a multi-part series you will want to read.  The majority of the first segment’s discussion was based on the articles with questions from listeners and myself about various aspects of the company, the accident, the people involved, the mission control room, and the NTSB report plus supporting documents which Doug studied for his articles.  Listener Alec sent in an email before the show wanting to know if SS2 has been more closely modeled after SS! if the company would have been flying by now.  Doug had much to say in response to this question dealing with the expansion to SS2 which was 3 times larger than SS1 and more.  When asked about return to flight, Doug suggested the possibility of Feb. 2016 but that was not definite.  This was in response to Josh asking for a Virgin time line.  Doug also got questions about Virgin and Spaceport America, then he was asked if noticed differences in Virgin’s presentation both pre and post the accident.  The subject of safety and test flight programs came up for Virgin, XCOR and all the companies.  We talked about safety and test flight programs in general with Doug, myself and some listeners,  agreeing that the test programs were not extensive enough or sufficiently comprehensive.  Don’t miss this discussion which included comments about the flight test envelope challenges, the X-15 as a possible model, and comments made by Neil Armstrong at the recent Suborbital Conference held a few years ago in Palo Alto, CA.

In the second segment, I started out by asking Doug about the new Commercial Space Law agreed upon by the House and Senate, specifically the part about asteroid mining and quasi-property rights.  I pointed out the feedback I was getting about this section being in opposition to the Outer Space Treat and many were not happy with it, nor did we know if it would have any legal standing outside the U.S.  Tim called in to support the asteroid mining provisions in the law.  John from Ft. Worth called in to talk about the DARPA XS-1 program and Masten Space Sciences. Burton in Canada asked about SLS, then Dr. Lurio called in to talk safety and many other topics.  Before the show ended, Tim called back to ask about the XCOR piston pump progress.

We welcomed Rand Simberg back to the show for a wide ranging discussion on top space news items, the SS2 accident update, space policy issues, and more.  During the first segment of this 96 minute program, Rand led off with the mentioning of the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 12 launch.  Next up was a short discussion about Comet 67P and the Philae lander, then Rand mentioned his current article in PJ Media, http://pjmedia.com/blog/commercial-spaceflights-terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad-last-week-of-october.  Rand talked about what is currently known about the SS2 accident, the NTSB investigation, & that nothing has been ruled out as a cause or partial cause for the accident.  When asked if he thought the accident would cause the FAA to start regulating the industry, he did not think so but listen to his reply.  This topic also came up in the last segment of our show. Rand mentioned that XCOR was moving ahead & there technology is different from the one employed by Virgin.  He also made a point of explaining multiple times that a test flight was not a commercial flight.  Rand got some listener emails about investment in Virgin and if it was waning.  Helen emailed in asking about a possible lapse in the Virgin safety culture.  Carl emailed in about the impact of the SS2 accident on Spaceport America.  We switched gears and talked about Antares, the Orbital-ATK merger, & the use of Russian rocket motors.

In the second segment, Rand was asked about the possible impact on Virgin’s customer base.  Rand said that the bigger risk was the investment risk.  The RD180 came up again as did the Atlas 5, Delta 4, and the Falcon 9.  We talked about possible midterm election impact and here Rand thought there might be more impact on the DOD side than NASA.  We discussed projects that might be cancelled as a result of the election and the ARM topped the list.  he did talk SLS and thought that eventually it would be shut down, especially if SpaceX gets Falcon Heavy flying.  Rand also mentioned the NRC Pathways Human Spaceflight Study but was critical of it, especially the part that said there had been no and will be no launch vehicle advances for the past 30 years.  Dr. Lurio was our first caller & he wanted to discuss possible FAA regulations, his understanding of the test flight vs. commercial flight policy application & more.  They talked about hybrid rocket motor vibrations and the unknowns regarding the current test flight.  Toward the end of their discussion they joked about using SLS to launch many many cubesats.  Kirk emailed us with a question about methane engine.  Rand had much to say about methane rocket motors so don’t miss his reply.  Rand talked about hybrid rocket motors and some of their problems, specifically for SS2 and Dream Chaser.  I asked our guest about the upcoming Orion test flight and the heat shield comments offered earlier in the week by Bob Zimmerman.  I then asked if he thought there would be a surge in return to the Moon projects.  Michael Listner called in regarding the likelihood of safety regulations coming to pass as a result of the accident.  Rand and Michael had an active discussion about this possibility.  As the program was ending, Rand talked about his book, “Safe Is Not An Option” which is available online and in the ebook format.  Remember, if you buy it through the OGLF Amazon portal, Amazon makes a contribution to TSS.  Rand mentioned he might update the book once the NTSB report on the accident is finalized.  Read Rand’s blog, Transterrestrial Musings at  http://transterrestrial.com.

We welcomed Mark Whittington back to the program for a wide ranging discussion on space news, policy, & technical matters.  You can follow Mark on his blog, http://curmudgeons.blogspot.com.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 46 minute program, Mark focused on the SpaceShipTwo accident, the Orbital Antares loss, the Mid-Term elections and what that may mean for space policy, Texas and the commercial space industry including the planned SpaceX spaceport, plus the space interest level of Texas Republicans taking over in the Senate and continuing in the House.  He also spoke the NASA Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) as a possible program to be cancelled referencing the work by Dr. Binzel at MIT who wants it cancelled in favor of finishing the NEO survey.  Later in the segment, Mark mentioned the Falcon Heavy to Mars, Inspiration Mars, and SLS.  He also talked about possible renewed interest in some sort of return to the Moon program.

In segment two, Dr. Doug called to talk about a Lunar Cots like program & a reusable lunar lander.  We addressed Dr. Dava Newman of MIT being nominated for the position of NASA Deputy Administrator.  Dava was a January 2014 guest on The Space Show and as you will hear, I think this was an excellent choice for the position.  We spoke more about SLS, then Mark mentioned the recent Whitehouse.gov call for feedback  on lunar & space policy by Tom Kalil, the Deputy Director for Policy for The White House Office of Science & Technology.  Dr. Doug and Mark talked about the ULA-Masten Zeus lander.  Mark updated us on the Lunar XPrize , we spoke about the book “The Martian” and concluded by talking about upcoming Sci-Fi TV channel space related programming .  As the program was concluding, Mark said space tourism will survive the Virgin accident but Virgin’s survival will come down to investors and customers.  He also suggested their might be congressional hearings which he thought would be fine providing they did not go to the extreme to strangle the industry with regulations & oversight.

We welcomed Michael Belfiore back to the show to discuss his recent XCOR Aerospace article (see www.airspacemag.com/space-exploration/The-Lynxs-Leap-223968551.html).  For more information, visit Michael’s website,  http://michaelbelfiore.com.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 44 minute program, Michael talked extensively about XCOR Aerospace and the Lynx per his above Air and Space Magazine article.  Michael has been a long time follower of XCOR and it shows in this discussion.  We also talked about the other suborbital companies and space tourism in general.  Michael was asked about XCOR’s plans to go orbital from suborbital which was another topic Michael had much to say about.  He said his preference was to fly on a Lynx for the more personal and intimate space experience, including wearing a space suit.  Michael said he was bullish about the overall space tourism industry, he is attracted to the growing small satellite industry but remains partial to human spaceflight.  We talked about SLS which he tends to ignore and discount, SpaceX and Orbital Sciences.  The topic of Cislunar space development came up and while Michael said he was supportive, he is drawn to asteroid economic development.  Before our segment ended, he updated us on the Google Lunar XPrize and I congratulated him for winning the NewSpace Journalism Award this year.

In the second segment, Michael was asked about DARPA which he follows. We talked about Starship 100, the DARPA management style & out of the box operations, the Dec. 20th robotic competition that Michael will attend, plus other important attributes of DARPA.  He mentioned upcoming magazine articles he will be writing for Popular Mechanics and AEON Magazine.  Michael was asked about other national space programs including China’s, Russia’s, and more. Doug called to talk about interstellar DARPA activities, and his cislunar economic ideas.  We also talked about returning to the Moon for settlement.

Our first subject was on Spaceport America and Virgin starting with Doug’s most recent post about possible Virgin rent payment disputes followed by the informed consent issues which may now have been resolved through negotiations with Virgin, the NM legislature, and NM trial attorneys.  We took listener calls and emails and as it turned out, the spaceport and Virgin story was controversial with listeners all over the board on these issues ranging from Charles who believes the spaceport and the industry are way ahead of their time to others who believe success will definitely prevail for the spaceport, Virgin and the industry.  Another issue discussed in the first segment was the hybrid rocket engine, possible Virgin problems with it, and related items. Doug shared his information with us on the subject and provided us with a brief history & overview on the hybrid engine.  We talked about powered test flights and the difficulty in doing these ventures given they always seem to be about two years away from operations.

     In the second segment, Doug told us about activities at the Mojave Air and Space Port including the construction for Stratolaunch.  Somehow we ended up again discussing hybrid engines and informed consent.  Doug was asked about Virgin and XCOR differences and he spoke as much as he could about the Lynx but said he was under NDA with XCOR as he is working on an XCOR book.  He seemed to favor the XCOR approach.  We talked about his future plans for Parabolic Arc. He is thinking of broadening it to other areas and accepting guest contributions.  I asked him about his visits to see the ATK five segment SRB tests and his thoughts on solids, ATK, etc.  He had much to say about it and SLS.  He continued talking about Mojave, I asked him if he had ever seen the Orbital L1011 and he told us about his tour of it and hearing Bill Weaver speak about his SR-71 breakup and survival.  A listener asked him about Interorbital out of Mojave, we talked about Dream Chaser, and more.

We talked about helmet restraint issues, Formula One race cars and taking corners at high speed producing a high lateral G force, jet fighters, rocket flight, roller coasters, and more.  Erik went over the proposed flight profile in g terms for Virgin Galactic and other proposed vehicles.  He also talked about centrifuge research and findings with the general public at the NASTAR facility.  He then switched to g-load force, fighter pilots and the Anti-G straining maneuver and breathing that they do to help counter excessive g’s.  Suborbital flight came up and here, Dr. Seedhouse had much to say given the small amount of suborbital human spaceflight history.  We also talked about bone loss and density issues, osteoporosis, and obesity.  Erik said the best physical profile for resisting high g force was short and stocky.  The worst was tall and thin.  Don’t miss his explanation for this. He also said smokers do better in high g’s over nonsmokers.  Erik got lots of question about the Bill Weaver SR-71 ejection.  Then he mentioned the Armstrong Line and said above that point, blood boils without a pressure suit. Erik also talked about orthostatic intolerance (OI) in the context of g tolerance.  He talked about professional astronaut training for suborbital missions such as with Astronauts4Hire.  We then discussed the financial problems hitting the Canadian aerospace industry with layoffs, closures, and the possible sale of valuable space hardware.  Listeners wanted to know about anti g countermeasures, if any, and laser eye surgery was discussed although Erik said it was no longer a problem.
