We welcomed Dr. Bill Rowe back to the show for this nearly two hour discussion regarding medical risks for spacewalks and astronauts. During the first segment, Dr. Rowe focused on a possible astronaut magnesium deficiency that would cause cardiovascular problems, especially with a space walk. Dr. Rowe explained why, talked about the adrenalin levels being 2 times those on Earth plus decreased plasma levels. He spent some time explaining these issues, their relationships to one another and why he believes them to be risk factors. In his discussion, he referenced health conditions for some of the Apollo era astronauts, plus he talked about microgravity issues and a possible mitigation strategy of using I.V. saline with the astronauts in space. At times the discussion was medically and technically complex but Bill broke it down for those of us not in the medical profession. He also talked about his experience over decades of practicing medicine and being a diagnostician, referencing many of his relevant patient studies along the way, including for example his work with Sy Mah. Dr. Doug sent in an email regarding dehydration and a headward fluid shift. Toward the end of the first segment, Dr. Doug called in to suggest that if an astronaut did an EVA in a pressurized rover vehicle rather than an Apollo era spacesuit, adrenalin levels and other risks would be mitigated. This was an interesting discussion with Dr. Rowe who did not agree with Doug’s premise. Listen and let us know what you think by posting on TSS blog.

In the second segment, Dr. Rowe started off saying more about the use of I.V. saline with astronauts, a topic he discussed in the first segment. . BJohn had several email questions asking about spacesuit gloves and exoskeleton gloves given what Dr. Rowe was saying about finger tips and related items. Other topics discussed in this segment included the ISS, the one year Twins Study, Vitamin D usage in space, iron risks for spaceflight, plus the implication for some of these space risks to the problem of terrestrial urban pollution. As he has done before, Bill advocated for the need to have subcutaneous pharmaceutical administration for astronauts, then he addressed issues relating to the calcium-magnesium ratio. Bill provided us with a good set of concluding comments, plus he suggested healthy guidelines for our lives right here on Earth.

We welcomed Sonia Van Meter to the show to discuss Mars One and the Mars 100 as Sonia was selected to be part of the Mars 100. During the first segment of our 100 minute program, Sonia was asked when she first knew she wanted to go to Mars. Though she has always been interested in space and related topics, it was not until she discovered Mars One that she became interested in going to Mars. During the early part of this discussion, Sonia puts forth why she wants to go to Mars & why she thinks it is important to go there. These themes were repeated throughout our discussion. Sonia got many questions about how difficult it might to leave family and friends plus listeners wanted to know if she was a skeptic about the Mars One mission. Sonia explained the importance of looking forward and focusing on the future, not on being skeptical. She was asked how she got her Mars information. She does due diligence on her own as well as receiving some information from Mars One. Sonia said she was in touch with many of the other Mars 100 finalists and they also due their own due diligence and discuss topics among themselves on a frequent basis. Listener questions by emailed were coming in rapidly asking everything from her backup plan if she did not go to Mars to what she would do for healthcare on the Mars One mission. Many listeners asked her about the risks including human spaceflight medical issues, launch risks, and more. She said the mission would need to be vetted by scientists and medical types and if she did not think it was safe, she would pull out of it. Other listeners wanted to know her perception of living conditions and the Martian environment. I asked if spacesuits would be used and if she did any rough camping, backpacking, etc. as a kid that might have helped her prepare her for tough living conditions on Mars. The MIT Study came up and was discussed as well as growth for the Mars One settlement coming either from Earth, the settlers, or both. She said there would be no childbirth for years as it was not safe so for the time being, the settlement would be growing by subsequent Mars One missions. Doug called to make the case for going to the Moon first. Sonia explained to him that she had no opportunities for going to the Moon though she would take them if offered. The only opportunity she had was Mars One. Sonia was looking at the picture from the vantage point of her own objectives while Doug had the big picture of lunar return and development in mind.

In the second segment, Bill from Virginia asked if Bas or other Mars One executives were planning to go on the mission to Mars. Don’t miss her answer. Todd wanted to know about a possible rescue mission and Andrew sent in a note about Mars One simulations & developing the infrastructure to live off world. I asked our guest if she had factored in launch risks & Randy in Boston asked if she had done a cost benefit analysis on the value of the mission versus the costs of it. Sonia said the educational outreach PR was a large part of the value for her. Privacy issues came up plus she was asked if Mars One went to a moon of Mars would she be disappointed. Don’t miss her answer to this question. Near the end of the show, I asked Sonia for her thoughts should American government regulations make her Mars One trip impossible. I also asked if she had considered or would consider pre-emptive surgery to have her appendix or gall bladder removed before going to Mars. Kris in Denver wanted to know if Mars one went under and the people on Mars were stranded, was it the responsibility of nations and their public sectors to attempt a rescue mission for the stranded “Martians.” Sonia was asked if she would be OK with nuclear propulsion if it shortened her transit time to Mars and then at the end, I asked her about planetary protection and the limits on landing humans on Mars. I directed her to the NASA Office of Planetary Protection for more information.

We welcomed Anthony Young back to the show to discuss the use of spacesuits in suborbital flight based on his Feb. 16, 2015 Space Review article, www.thespacereview.com/article/2695/1. During the first segment of our 1 hour 47 minute program, Anthony talked about his Space Review article and the Virgin Galactic accident from last year plus their goal of flying spaceflight participants in a short sleeve environment. We spent much of the segment talking about the pros and cons of using pressure suits as opposed to having a pressurized cabin and short sleeve environment. Anthony mentioned the other space vehicle programs and what he said were there plans to use pressure suits as opposed to non-pressure suit environment. Listeners asked him several questions by email. For example, BJohn wanted to know if the same spacesuit being talked about could be use for EVA purposes. Michael Listner took issue with Anthony comparing the early days of aviation to spaceflight saying the political, legal and media environment were completely different in the early days of aviation. He suggested that today a serious incident during a revenue-generating flight would raise a huge outcry and would probably kill the industry. Both Anthony and I disagreed with him on his conclusion.

In the second segment, we talked about work being done on a new generation of spacesuits for the commercial space tourism industry and Anthony mentioned several spacesuit companies and developers. He also talked about the special training Felix Baumgartner had to have to avoid panic attacks in the suit. Listeners continued with email questions including one asking if any airline companies had looked into suborbital flight. John in Florida called to talk about efforts to lower the cost for spacesuits. Toward the end, Anthony addressed his latest Space Review article which was about Sarah Brightman going to the ISS later this year (www.thespacereview.com/article/2724/1).

During the first segment of our 91 minute program, Louise told us about new developments and her work since her first Space Show appearance on Oct. 27, 2008.  She told her about her science work and related travels at JSC and her work with the moon rocks.  She also explained how her work with the moon rocks was important to human spaceflight, especially a return lunar mission and an asteroid mission.  She talked about why a lunar return mission was so important for science & why it was better to have astronauts on the mission rather than only robotic.  Out of this discussion came another SLS discussion as Louise pointed out the need for heavy lift for a lunar or any BLEO mission.  I explored her thoughts and opinions on SLS, asking her about the perspectives provided by those not supporting SLS.  In my opinion, Louise put forth excellent arguments in support of SLS during the show.  I even suggested she become the spokesperson for SLS and lunar return missions given how well she articulated and explained the need for SLS.  Louise also spoke about the distance from Earth to the Moon and the lunar orbit, referencing the LLRE (The Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment) from the Apollo era.  She used information from this device in comparison with three other measuring methods to support her theory that the speed of light is slowing down.  Listen to her explanation behind her theory assumptions.  Louise then mentioned the very accurate atomic clock soon to go up to the ISS, ACES (see http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Human_Spaceflight/Human_Spaceflight_Research/Atomic_Clock_Ensemble_in_Space_ACES).  She said this would be very helpful in detecting and clarifying the change in the speed of light.  John from Ft. Worth called with several questions and comments about the speed of light.   Next, Paul asked a series of email questions about time travel.

In the second segment, we started off discussing time travel and speed of light changes for a multi-generational human mission.  Louise introduced us to time dilation.  John in Montana asked about GPS timing & the change in the speed of light.   Christine emailed a question about an RTM mission and asked what might change if the speed of light is slowing down.  Next, we talked about Planck units and the equation GM=TC^3 which is the same as M=R=t.  Peer review was discussed as were the challenges of getting new theories introduced into the literature.  As you will hear, old ideas do not go lightly into the dark, so to speak.  Louise then talked about having discovered a lunar orbit anomaly and referenced her paper, “Calculating a Lunar Orbit Anomaly” which you can download at http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2013/pdf/2436.pdf.  As the program neared its end, I asked our guest about her idea that there might be a mini black hole in our sun.  Louise told us about her theory & talked in general about mini black holes.  Our last subject dealt with her interest in positive pressure suits for IVA purposes.

We welcomed back Erik Seedhouse to the program to discuss the new Second Edition of “Tourists In Space: A Practical Guide.”  In our first segment of our 1 hour 26 minute show, Erik told us that the second edition was about 80% new and that it would be released the end of August.  If you buy the book on Amazon, you can order it at the special pre-release price.  Also, be sure to use the OGLF portal explained in the archive summary statement, on the blog and on both TSS & OGLF websites.  If you purchase it using the OGLF portal, Amazon makes a contribution to The Space Show.  Erik opened with the manual part of the book and mentioned his suborbital training company, Suborbital Training located in Melbourne, Florida.  For more information on suborbital training, visit http://www.suborbitaltraining.com.  Next, Erik talked about the flight profiles for both the XCOR Lynx and the Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo.  I asked Erik for the top 3 or 4 challenges to the industry and he cited space safety as the largest challenge to overcome.  Other top challenges included the spaceship noise which will be very loud, vibrations, acceleration, and space motion sickness.  He talked about the impact mostly on the cardiac system.  Erik was asked about the use of spacesuits with by the various companies.  We also discussed orbital space tourism using the Dragon and then later using the Dream Chaser.  Erik was asked if spaceflight participant medical exams would be done by special doctors or one’s own doctor even if the doctor has no aerospace expertise or experience.  Before the break & in response to a question, Erik pointed out that the industry was on hold given the all the earlier “cry wolf” announcements about starting revenue flights.

 

In the second segment, Erik talked about going to space at the designated and approved altitude by the FAI in France, the official international record and standards keeping organization for space issues.  He pointed out that 50 miles was not space.  We talked some about the World View project, then our topic switched to spaceports here in the U.S. as well as those planned for outside the country. Erik raised some red flags given the spaceships are under ITAR control which might make it very difficult for them to be operated in a foreign country under present ITAR rules/regulations.   Orbital tourism came up for Dream Chaser, Dragon V2 and the Bigelow Aerospace habs.  In speaking about the industry, our guest pointed out how SpaceX was changing spaceflight by their success.  The Brownsville, TX proposed SpaceX spaceport got lots of discussion time and email questions.  Erik pointed out two commercial spacesuit design companies, Orbital Outfitters and Final Frontier Design.  Near the end of our program, point to point transportation was discussed as were the potential winners in the upcoming commercial crew NASA down select process.

We welcomed both Dr. John Jurist and Dr. Jim Logan back to the show to discuss spacewalks (EVAs), spacesuits, human missions to the Moon and Mars, to the Martian Moon Deimos, the newly created Space Enterprise Institute, & the new Aquarius Reusable Human Spaceflight water based launch vehicle.  During the first segment of our 2 hour 5 minute program, our guests started talking about EVAs.  Early in the discussion, Dr. Logan provided us with important & interesting statistics regarding EVAs, then we discussed the challenges with them and spacesuits.  We talked at length about the difference in EVAs and spacesuits for the Moon, LEO, asteroids, & Mars.  We also talked economics for spacesuits given the need for a specific spacesuit depending on the destination/mission.  We talked about new designs for one size fits all & for mitigating dust problems.  Jim talked about the medical complications regarding both lunar and Martian dust.  Our guests then suggested that EVAs will likely be phased out for robotic missions.  Doug asked several questions about this via email.  Also, Jim suggested that EVAs will evolve to the concept of Forward Deployed Humans in the Loop for Telerobotic Operations.  This concept was discussed several times throughout our program.

In our second segment, Jim started with an announcement about the Space Enterprise Institute (SEI).  When it goes live in the next week or so, I will announce it on the show so you can follow it  He explained SEI, its purpose & goals.  He then talked about the concept that both Jim and Dan Adamo have developed over the past few years, Aquarius which is a reusable water-based interplanetary HSF transport.  As soon as the SEI website is online, listeners will be able to download their peer reviewed paper for free.  During this segment, Jim talked about Aquarius, John added in some details, we talked about the need for nuclear electric propulsion and why, plus the role of water with this launcher.  Both our guests explained the advantages of Deimos for the early missions, plus the return shielding and reusability as the return goes to a lunar orbit using existing water.  Radiation shielding was talked about, including the needed water and needed Radiation Protection (RP) levels.  John pointed out one advantage of Aquarius was the use of an open loop life support system.  John in Ft. Worth called about the temperatures that Jim said were needed.  Jim explained the need for 3,000 degrees C.  Both guests offered closing comments about EVAs & the direction we might be heading toward the forward deployed humans concept.  Both guests said the telerobotic concepts discussed would reduce risks, timelines, & overall mission costs.

We welcomed Kevin Heath, CEO and President of Waypoint 2 Space, a new human spaceflight training company located near JSC near Houston, Texas.  Visit their website for more information, http://www.waypoint2space.com.  While our program was 90 minutes and covered two segments, since we talked about Waypoint 2 Space in both segments, along with their training program and plans, this summary will cover both segments as one.  We started our discussion with Mr. Heath providing us with an historical overview leading up to the creation of Waypoint 2 Space followed by the why of starting this business.  One of the important points made early in the discussion was the fact that Waypoint has received the FAA Safety Approval which is important, especially for the platform customers.  Kevin then went over their training plans and programs, explaining that they will have three main programs, a Level 1 Spaceflight Fundamentals; Level 2 Sub-orbital Training & Level 3 Orbital Training.  Waypoint also has a Commercial Payload Specialist Program which was explained to us.  Our guest went through the special equipment they have and will acquire as Kevin made the point throughout our discussion that Waypoint provided comprehensive spaceflight training.  As you will hear, the programs are being implemented as the markets appear. For example, the Level 3 Orbital Training Program will be delayed until there are orbital flights available for their customer base.  Kevin talked a lot about spacesuits in the training, having sizes for their customer base, and he described more regarding their comprehensive spacesuit training.  He also talked about making Waypoint broad to appeal to and serve a large and diverse market.  When asked, our guest went over the physical requirements for the program along with the guidelines for one’s health.  Listeners asked lots of questions, including wanting to know if training for focus, calmness, and on psychological concerns was part of the training.  Others asked questions about the training per se, space sickness, competition, and of course the pricing.  The price for the Level 1 Program is $45,000 & Kevin spent some time discussing pricing with us.  Later we learned that Waypoint has expansion plans that may even include a foreign type of franchise at various spaceport locations around the world.  Kevin was asked about special lunar or Mars mission profile and settlement training, plus I asked him if he used space tourism market studies in his creating the business.  Our guest had much to say about this particular subject.  Others wanted to know about class size, registration, & possible NASA endorsements to the training.

We welcomed Dr. Jim Logan and Dr. John Jurist to this special 2.5 hour Space Show classroom in-depth discussion on space radiation. We focused our discussion on deep space, Mars, the Moon and BLEO missions. Note that on both The Space Show blog (see above) and The Space Show Classroom blog (http://spaceshowclassroom.wordpress.com),  Dr. Jurist has a Power Point presentation on radiation.  During the program, our guests referred to specific slides that you will want to check out.  In our first segment, Dr. Logan started out by telling us about his interest in the subject, why he has been writing a paper on the subject for publication, and how this Classroom show came about.  He cited our short duration spaceflight experience, the Apollo missions, Space Shuttle flights, and then how things started to change when we had six month ISS visits.  Dr. Logan also made it clear that space was not a benign emptiness type of environment.  He said the reality was that interplanetary space was a sea of disruptive ionizing radiation wrecking havoc on biologic systems.  We moved forward in our discussion from that point.  We talked about the findings of the MSL RAD instrument regarding radiation on the way to Mars and on the surface of Mars.  Both John and Jim spent some time putting the RAD numbers through analysis to let us know what this means for human missions to Mars.  We talked shielding, possible materials, passive and active.  We talked extensively about water and the use of hydrogen as well for shielding.  Our guests addressed the two types of radiation, the GCR (galactic cosmic rays) and the CME/solar flare.  Here, John suggested listeners look at his slide 13 as we talked about protons and neutrons.  Jim said there was no magic bullet and talked about shielding effects of Earth’s atmosphere.  Pay attention here as Jim introduced us to the  RP scale.  For being on the surface, he said nothing less than RP100 would suffice.  For the vehicle, an RP5 was required.  John introduced us to career limits for radiation for men and women astronauts of different age but the career limits are for LEO and not BLEO.  BLEO limits are expected to be more restrictive when made public in April 2014.  Earth Mars transit times were discussed, especially in the context of Brian’s email that suggested a 180 day transit time.  Both our guests said that was unlikely with chemical propulsion and all of us again stressed the need for nuclear thermal propulsion.  Microgravity was talked about, especially in the context of side effects due to the radiation environment.  Jim then brought up the EVA subject and spacesuits.  Briefly, Jim said that quite possibly the ISS construction represented the zenith of EVAs which may become a thing of the past.  Don’t miss why he said this plus his description of serious spacesuit limitations.  We talked about life support to Mars and here Jim suggested we should use Open Loop! Again, listen to the rational behind this recommendation.  Don’t miss what our guests said about theories & movies making it sound easy to go to Mars and that the radiation would be nothing more than just a few more cigarette packs a year.  Our last topic addressed informed consent issues.

In the second segment, I asked our guests for a readiness timetable were there sufficient funding and technology advancements.  I also inquired if Russia, China, and others assessed the radiation risks in a similar way to the U.S.  We then talked about radiation and space pregnancy, fetus development, birth, and informed consent for the fetus, a baby, and a child under 18.  Ethical issues regarding child birth and space pregnancy were talked about as well.  Curt had sent in email questions which our guests answered, especially about drinking irradiated water and microgravity DNA damage & what this may mean for radiation effects.  Next, I asked Jim and John to tell us their 2-5 steps for the start of designing a Mars human mission.  Jim went first and listed Day 1 and Day 2 activities, John listed his top three priorities which were different than those suggested by Jim.  Don’t miss this discussion as its very instructive as to how to do or at least start mission planning for a human mission BLEO.  Roger sent in a question asking if the crew should be senior citizens since they have more resistance to radiation.  Don’t miss what our guests said about this idea.  It may surprise you.  Our next topic was would going to Deimos be easier.  Yes, it would but it would be a very different kind of human  mission.  Jim had some great comments about Mars gravity.  Briefly, he said it was the “best.” Later, when asked to compare the Moon and Mars, our guests said lunar radiation was worse than Mars.  Also, the Mars atmosphere does provide limited shielding while there is no such thing on the Moon.  Jim had earlier talked about a sphere being the perfect shape for an interplanetary spaceship.  Shelia emailed in wanting to know if heavy lift made a difference and if the sphere was so good, why were capsules being used? Don’t miss the response.  We then talked about the complexities of rendezvous and docking, especially in the context of fewer launches (heavy lift) as compared to many more launches (smaller rockets).  Near the end, I asked our guests if either thought our nation, the public, NASA, our leaders and politicians were sufficiently motivated to do a human Mars mission.  Jim did not think so and had much more to say in reply to this question.  John was more pessimistic.  Both thought it was more likely that the private sector would mount a human Mars mission rather than our seeing a government mission, but raising the needed capital might turn out to be a show stopper.  The three of us then talked about what it was like growing up in the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s as compared to today.  John and I (John is a bit more than 2 years older than me) were probably more harsh than Jim in our assessment of today, but we all realize that the younger generations will be taking us to space, building the next smartphone and more. I talked about my visits to Google, Apple, SpaceX, etc. and the excitement in the air in belonging in their work forces which does not seem to exist with NASA. This opened the door for Jim to put it on the line about his NASA experiences and the potential opportunities providing NASA can somehow reorganize.  He did not think the type of reorganization he was talking about would happen.  Both our guests left us with excellent takeaway points and concluding pearls of wisdom.

We welcomed Adam Johnson to the program for a fascinating discussion regarding the lost science, photography, and people behind the famous 2001: A Space Odyssey movie.  In the first segment of this 1 hour 33 minute discussion, we talked about Adam’s book, 2001: The Lost Science; The science and technology of the most influential film ever made.  The book, published by Apogee Prime, is a large format, high resolution picture and fact book documenting the making of the 2001 movie.  The people behind the movie and the science are both fact and photographed detailed, the models used and developed for the film are in the book, and little or unknown facts behind the making of this film are revealed, maybe for the first time.  Adam talked at length about the science advisors including Fred Ordway, Arthur C. Clarke, Henry Lange, and others.  He had much to say about Kubrick and his making of the film, plus his visit to the archives at the space center in Huntsville and getting those archives in order for research and for historical purposes.  Adam found blueprints related to the film and so much more. He was asked about the movie sets and props and we learned that Kubrick ordered them destroyed after the film was made to keep them from being used in a B rated sci fi movie.  Listeners asked about the science fiction in the movie largely becoming reality today.  Mr. Johnson had much to say about the utopian viewpoint expressed in the movie, the fact that Russians actually visited the set and one was a spy.  We even discussed the still photography, the two photographers, and black and white as compared to color photography.  Doug asked about the large scale props in the moving having influence on our use of large scale space hardware for real such as in heavy lift the and the shuttle.  At the end of the segment, we learned that Adam is working on Volume 2 to be released next year.  Also, he mentioned the Kubrick and other view that only scientists and educated people, test pilots, and the like would ever be able to go to space.

In the second segment, Dave Hook emailed in to ask if our guest could reference modern sci fi movies that would be icons like 2001.  He mentioned two movies.  Billy wanted to talk about Apollo 13 and the later film, Apollo 18.  When Adam was asked what was most impactful to him, he mentioned the Russian story and the contributions by Fred.  I asked about the theme song and Kubrick having taken it from the famous Strauss symphony.  Adam gave us the fascinating history behind the use of this music.  Hint: God , asking unanswerable questions about ourselves and our place in the universe.  Near the end, we talked about modern day space having a legacy from this film.  We also talked about the nuclear rocket and how the movie changed the lives of countless people that saw it.

We welcomed Dr. Ryan Kobrick to the program to discuss Yuri’s Night 2012 with us.  According to the Yuri’s Night website (www.yurisnight.net), “Yuri’s Night is a global celebration of humanity’s past, present, and future in space. Yuri’s Night parties and events are held around the world every April in commemoration of April 12, 1961, the day of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s first manned spaceflight, and April 12, 1981, the inaugural launch of NASA’s Space Shuttle.”  Please note that today’s program review will not be by segments given our discussion was ongoing throughout the show and the subjects and topics discussed did not change that much per segment.  Dr. Kobrick started us out with a brief history of Yuri’s Night but we soon got into the global parties and events, how to find a party or event near you, and how to host an event.  As you will hear, if you contact Yuri’s Night through their website, many people are willing to help you organize an event and there are lots of supporting materials for you to use.  We also talked about Yuri’s Night educational outreach for students of all grades.  Previous Yuri’s Night celebrations were discussed, we took a look at the different countries where events are held, and our guest fielded several listener questions on these issues.  One question Ryan received from Chuck asked why a Yuri’s Night and not a similar celebration for Apollo 11.  Don’t miss what both Ryan and I had to say about this in our response to Chuck.  This particular question brought up the subject of NASA support for Yuri’s Night and our guest had much to say about this as well.  Another program Ryan talked about was Yuri’s Night Live (http://live.yurisnight.net).  Listeners also wanted to know if Yuri’s Night was supported by other national space agencies and why there were no events in China.  Later in the program near the end, we asked Dr. Kobrick about his own background in space, how he got his space interest, and what he hoped to be doing in the future. Visit his personal website, www.ryinspace.com.  As you will hear, he has been involved in some interesting projects, spacesuit engineering and design projects, lunar dust studies, and he wants to go on to be a university professor when he finishes his Postdoctoral Associate program at MIT.  After talking with him on The Space Show and having met and talked with him in person at conferences, I can honestly say that there are going to be some very lucky college students out there who end up in one or more of his classes.  Before our program ended, we returned to discussing Yuri’s Night and Ryan urged us all to register to attend an event or host one.  With one month to go before Yuri’s Night 2012 is here, the time is now to either plan and host an event or make arrangements to attend an event and participate.
