We welcomed Don Nelson back to the show for this 90 minute discussion regarding his Commercial Space Shuttle Freighter (CSS Freighter) concept.  During the first segment, Don provided us with an overview of our current launch and human spaceflight situation, he talked about safety and reliability, then he started describing his CSS Freighter Concept.  You can learn more about it at his website, www.spacetran21.org.  He spent time explaining why wings were needed despite the common misconception that they become worthless mass in space.  He said over and over again that if one does the trades, wings come out far better than carrying additional propellant for a vertical landing.  He also said he was a strong proponent of full reusability, not just first stage reusability.  In response to several questions, he said his CSS Freighter was modeled after the shuttle but with new upgrade designs and technology though to save money and reduce development time, the freighters were to be based on existing technology.  He had much to say about the difficulty they had in upgrading space shuttle systems so this time around he said upgrades would be modular and as close to plug and play as possible.  His idea is that the freighters will be built and operated by the private sector.  He suggested the extensive use of composite materials to save on mass and to use reusable Space Shuttle Main Engines (SMEs).  He referenced the Air Force X-37B program, he talked about the advance state of the thermal protection systems (TPS) for this top secret spacecraft suggesting it would be the TPS of choice for the freighters.  Our guest was challenged in both segments regarding other reusability options including the advancement toward success represented by SpaceX and the Falcon 9.  Don said it was first stage only, he was talking about full vehicle reusability and making the case for his approach with wings.  Don’t miss the challenges and the replies. Don also spelled out the advantages of horizontal as compared to vertical vehicle landing regarding reusability.

In the second segment, BJohn asked about the Soviet version of the shuttle, the Buran.  Don mostly talked about lessons learned by their not having a reusable space shuttle main engine (SME).  Don was asked about international vehicle participation in his freighter project. He said not with this Congress and referenced our policy on not talking with China.  Don was also asked for the rational for doing this and he focused on competition.  Make sure you hear this discussion.  He said he was including the Air Force in his plan given the rapid turnaround time for the vehicle (five days).  He explained the Air Force market in detail and is in touch with key Air Force people.  In addition, he has made presentations to members of Congress and their staffs plus key people at NASA.  I asked him how they responded to the concept.  You don’t want to miss what he said about that.  Alex asked an email question about launch pads and NASA having altered or gotten rid of the shuttle launch pads.  Don said launch pads were not an issue, even suggested foreign launch sites, but did say KSC was a prime launch location in the U.S.  Don attacked expendable rockets over and over again in both segments so Ben from Seattle pressed him as to why his reusable freighter would be more reliable than an expendable rocket.  He said each flight of an expendable rocket was a test flight.  Our guest received a questions about suborbital flight evolving to orbital flight, listeners asked about private Bigelow space stations, and one listener wanted his thoughts on the Skylon.  Tim called in and talked about chemical rockets and rocket fuel. He also inquired about scramjets and Big Dumb Boosters.  Doug called in to challenge his reusability comments citing the Falcon 9 to make his case that wings were wasted mass.  Don’t miss this discussion.  When asked if he thought things would change as a result of the coming elections, he suggested that a new congress would likely terminate SLS given our budget & SLS problems.  Don’t miss the balance of his concluding comments.

We welcomed Dr. Jeff Foust back to the program.  In the first segment of our 1 hour 53 minute discussion, Jeff covered many space events and projects including Jeff’s “Commercial Spaceflight After the Antares and SpaceShipTwo Failures” talk at the National Air and Space Museum on Dec. 8th.  We also talked about commercial space and here, Jeff gave us a good definition to use in general for commercial space.  He then provided us with economic stats for the entire commercial space industry and its segments including commercial satellites, ground service, NewSpace, and more.  Our guest said that Orion and SLS were at one end of the commercial space spectrum while at the other end one finds XCOR & Virgin Galactic.  Michael Listner called to talk about the Orion EFT 1 flight needing a commercial launch license as well as a return license given that it was a commercial flight contracted for by NASA in contrast to a NASA flight using a commercial company.  The discussion changed to the Virgin Galactic and Orbital Antares accidents and the potential impact of those accidents on both the companies and the commercial space industry in general.  Orbital’s proposed merger with ATK was mentioned as were possible replacement engines for Antares including the use of an ATK SRB.  A listener then brought up the Russian sanctions and the continued seemingly good relationship we have with Russia regarding space.  As the segment was ending, Alan in Tucson asked about reports that the Russians would leave the ISS in 2020.

In the second segment, our first caller was Dwayne who wanted to talk about delays and slipped launch schedules regarding the SpaceX launch manifesto. Jeff and Dwayne had an excellent discussion on this topic so don’t miss it.  Related topics came up in the discussion including reusability, customer needs such as an on time launch versus wanting a lower price and more.  Jerry sent in an email asking about the Raptor tests by SpaceX but Jeff said not much was being made public about them.  The NASA FY 15 budget came up again and Jeff went into some detail as to what part of NASA got what.  Public/private partnerships were mentioned & fully discussed in the segment.  Jeff did point out that the project must entice a private company to participate meaning that it  probably needs to have a strong business case for the project otherwise why would a private commercial company join with NASA.  Jeff indicated these opportunities might be few and far between at this time but when they work, they are a good way to structure the project.  There was a listener inquiry about SLS and cancellation. Jeff had much to say about this too.  Near the end of the segment, we talked more about public/private partnerships, the Delta 2 rocket and Antares, plus rocket certification for a NASA HSF launch, a science mission, and a DOD launch as all three have different certification requirements.  Our final topics included a brief mention of the suborbital industry, Dragon Lab, Skybox, Google Space, and Planet Labs.  Jeff offered us a good set of closing comments so be sure to listen to them.

We welcomed Anthony Young to the program to discuss his book “The Saturn V F-1 Engine: Powering Apollo into History.  This is an excellent book which I strongly recommend.  Remember, if you buy it through the OGLF Amazon portal, Amazon makes a contribution to The Space Show.  During the first segment of our two hour program, Mr. Young started out talking about the book and why he wrote it.  Since our guest had also written books car engines, I asked him if there were comparisons to be made with the F-1 & the large, complex, & powerful car engines. We also talked about potential plans to rebuild and modernize the F-1 for either the SLS or as a possible engine replacement for the Air Force RD-180.  Anthony did say that it would not be a rebuild of the F-1 but a complete remake of it with modern manufacturing, materials, etc.  Another topic discussed was the F-1 thrust for a new engine.  Marshall called to talk about fuel propellants for the F-1 and air pollution.  This gave Anthony the opportunity to talk about ATK and their efforts to modernize the SRB & solid rocket propellant.  Anthony suggested that we need advanced propulsion for humans to Mars to significantly reduce the transit time, not a new F-1.  Michael called in & talked about SLS being needed to preserve the expertise & knowhow for making large rockets & flying them.  He also spoke about some of his upcoming Space Review articles on the Code of Conduct & other subjects.  He brought to our attention a YouTube video, “The Engines That Came Out Of The Cold” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZnYr94aa9E).  Mr. Young was asked about the existence of NASA lunar programs.  He mentioned several including Lunar CATALYST but suggested they were small robotic missions.  He did not think there were NASA human flights planed for the Moon.  Dwayne called to shed further light on NASA and lunar programs.  He also spoke about the F-1 thrust for a new engine.

In the second segment, John called from Ft. Worth.  He spoke about technology and performance for the engine, other programs now cancelled & the logic of having stayed the course.  He brought up good points on our losing our technology capability, then Anthony addressed many of the NASA KSC infrastructure changes going on to partner with the commercial industry.  Doug called to talk about some of the lunar program comments, to offer a different perspective on SLS, & public/private partnerships as well as international participation.  Anthony was asked for his thoughts on where our space program might be today had the Saturn V & F-1 not been cancelled.  In responding to this, he talked about how complex the F-1 was & how many parts were in it.

Welcome to this 2 hour 2 minute Open Lines discussion.  Jeff was our first caller regarding propulsion, SLS, Orion, SRBs, ATK, advanced technology as compared to existing or old technology, composite materials, and much more.  I also asked him about sequestration in the defense side of space.  Todd sent an email to Jeff to inquire what he thought about the possibility of an SLS cancelation.  We talked about the possibility of canceling the SLS project due to economic issues with the government.  Jeff also spoke about XCOR, ULA, Rocketdyne, pumps, and lower cost options with NewSpace companies.  Charles Pooley called in to talk about the Indian Mars mission, the 4 stage PSLV rocket, and his forthcoming book due out before the end of the year.  Tim sent in a STEM article & he called so we talked about the article but both of us did not think much of the author’s comments on the subject.  Next up was Doug from Southern California regarding articles about Bigelow and Lunar Cots.  The use of SLS was discussed for commercial missions or public/private partnerships and I parted company from his analysis and conclusions.  The articles suggested by Doug included www.parabolicarc.com/2013/11/12/50647 and www.newspacejournal.com/2013/11/12/bigelow-report-calls-for-use-of-cots-model-for-cislunar-transportation.  As frequent listeners know, Doug is a strong advocate of lunar cots.  I also asked him what the profitable commercial mission would for lunar cots.  Mostly Doug talked about selling rides to NASA except with the SLS, they would be using a gov. vehicle. It’s an interesting discussion.  What do you think about the ideas we talked about?  Andrew from Tucson was our last caller and we learned he has been busy with precision tool and engineering for rocket parts.  We also talked about the need for cultural changes in the country and he talked specifics in this area, not with generalizations.  We also talked about astronomy, career paths, and telescopes.

During the first segment of our 91 minute discussion with Mike, we talked about the lack of a coherent national space policy and how best to use tax payer dollars for the public good.  Mike discussed the fact that there was no credible alternative to the RTM program, no clear path to any set of discernible goals.  I asked Mike about NASAs asteroid redirect mission.  He did say it had interesting potential and it was better than nothing but as listeners agreed, it was not a grabbing and inspiring program.  Listeners asked Mike about Constellation which he said was a space system architecture.  We talked about a lunar base and access to Mars.  I asked Mike about the public’s interest in space & you don’t want to miss his response.  Daniel brought up budget issues, commercial ventures, and the current administration.  We also talked public/private partnerships and multi-year programs and policy challenges.  Mike was asked about the VSE and bipartisan support though Jon emailed in his disagreement on that issue.  Mike talked about goals as being important to congress and the need for an effective policy to have bipartisan support.  Mike was asked about the ISS and the potential for discovery and we he responded to a listener question about the mass needed in orbit to support a lower mass on the Moon.  The ratio is 10::1. 

In the second segment, June asked about economies of size in launch vehicles and heavy lift.  Barbara emailed in about a COTS like program for HSF.  Trent called from Australia to inquire about Stratolaunch.  Doug called to ask about cislunar development and what a program that supported that development might look like.  Mike had much to say on this subject, don’t miss it.  We talked extensively about the role of government and the private sector, including government subsidies.  A listener talked about scientific discovery and serendipity.  John asked about the Ares 1 vibration and solids in comparison to liquids for safety.  John in Ft. Worth asked Mike about SLS and Orion as a capabilities holding program and Mike agreed.  The idea is to maintain capabilities until the time they can be used.  During the entire program, I asked Mike about his public service, how he dealt with attacks and criticism, and how he got his interest in space.  This is an important discussion.

We welcomed Hu Davis and Bill Ketchum to the program to discuss the need for space infrastructure development, SSP, and a space leadership policy by the United States. In the first segment of our 91 minute program, we talked about the need for space infrastructure development, reusable rockets, and space solar power.  Our guest Hu Davis has a Power Point presentation on SSP that will be uploaded to The Space Show blog summary so don’t forget to check it out on the blog.  I will also upload to the blog Bill Ketchum’s pdf paper,  “What Will America Do In Space Now?”  We discussed the history of various space infrastructure studies and efforts and the same for SSP studies, pointing out how new technologies, engineering methodologies, and sophisticated manufacturing have made many projects cost effective today when that was not the case years ago.  Our guests fielded several questions from listeners about the SSP business case, reusability and the SLS compared to the Falcon Heavy.  Doug asked about the use of in space resources & our guests suggested that for SSP for example, using in space resources could account for 90% SSP components.  Questions were asked about the land cost and the use of rectennas.

In our second segment, we talked about nuclear propulsion and tax/economic subsidies to our current terrestrial energy industry which make it harder to develop SSP.   We talked about the problem and the lack of viability for SLS.  Questions came in regarding on orbit propellant transfer and cryogenic transfer development.  As our program was ending, our guests talked about space education outreach, persuading congressional leaders and the public to support space infrastructure development, SSP , and more.

You do not want to miss this discussion, especially when I asked about the complexities of the B1 as compared to a spaceship.  We talked about SLS, Orion, & Inspiration Mars which Jerry supports.  In response to an email from Becky, we talked about the NASA astronauts, the fact that there are more astronauts than flight opportunities, and the current situation for NASA astronauts.  Our guest mentioned two year training missions and when I inquired about that time period, we learned that it included learning Russian, training with ESA, Japanese, Canadian, and Russian hardware and more.  Jerry was asked if he rode on a Soyuz. He said no but was in a Soyuz and talked about his going on board MIR.

In our second segment, we started out asking him about faith which is part of the subtitle of his book.  Here again our guest had much to say so listen carefully to this discussion.  As Jerry was part of the team that recovered debris from the Columbia accident, I asked him about it. He told us about his experience in learning about the disaster, crew families and more.  This is a first hand accounting of getting the news and working with the families and the people involved in finding the debris.  Another topic discussed was on orbit construction, mainly with the private companies.  Jerry talked about this at length given his work in establishing how to do it for the ISS and actually doing multiple missions making and assembling parts in space.  We also talked about gender differences in these space walks.  Toward the end of our discussion, space leadership came up as did missions and goals.  The shuttle thermal tiles were discussed and he referenced tile damage on his Atlantis flight which was the third flight after Challenger.  This was an amazing story and luck was really shining on the Atlantis crew.

Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright.  We welcomed Tim Pickens back to the program to tell us about his new company Pickens Innovations.  As Tim explained, he has left Dynetics and formed his own consulting business.  Learn more about his new consultancy and activities by visiting www.timpickens.com.  We started our discussion by my asking Tim about some of the comments I made yesterday in a USA Today telephone interview regarding commercial/private space development.  Since I forgot to record the interview (something I have learned to do for my own protection given edit rights are seldom permitted re the articles or programs), I bounced some of my comments off Tim to see if I was drinking my own Kool Aid about the state of the private space industry, its potential, the positive changes I see happening, and more.  Tim confirmed that I was on the right track so now I await the USA Today article.  In the process of this discussion, Tim had much to say about the emerging commercial space industry, the companies involved, the economics and the markets.  We talked about how things have changed for the better over time and in recent years.  I then asked Tim about Rocket City Space Pioneers, his Google Lunar X Prize entry, for which he remains the team leader.  Tim was quite frank in discussing the program with us, the Google Lunar X Prize in general & many of the critical issues facing the contest & all the contestants.  Do listen carefully to what he said as it goes right to the heart of issues facing the broader commercial & private space development efforts/industry.  Part of our discussion focused on the value chain available for sustainable lunar business, the problems with ride sharing at this time to the Moon and much more. We also talked about essential time lines for the contest.  He said many times that affordable systems were needed, viable and sustainable business models were needed, and he was thinking about a merger or joint venture with other contestants to make it happen.  Tim fielded many questions about his new consultancy, Pickens Innovations. We learned that he was getting involved in other areas than space, specifically medical devices.  He described two such devices and why his company was pursuing their development.  How about market size and potential as compared to space?  In fact, cash flow & revenue from these successful non-space businesses are expected to fund many of his space development activities.  Also in this segment, our guest talked about space hardware issues.

In the second segment, he defined the Man Cave which he talks about on his website.  Tim responded to a listener question about the potential of a Netscape Moment re investing in space businesses, plus he talked about the need to have more fun and be less nerdy, referencing conference presentations and similar things space people engage in from time to time.  As an example, he cited the Big Bang Theory TV show and a new show about to start, Top Engineer.  Later, we talked about SLS and its future, its mission, and its likelihood of being funded to completion.  Suborbital space and vehicle issues were a discussion topic followed by Tim talking about the Space & Missile Defense Conference in Huntsville (www.udreg.com/SMD) later this month. His closing comments were positive & upbeat for our future, especially by using disruptive technologies which he talked about at great length throughout the interview.

Also in the initial segment, we talked about Congress, commercial crew, down selecting, the Space Act Agreement, and theU.S. human spaceflight program, such that it is a program.  Also mentioned was the SLS program along with Orion, then I asked about the space coast economy per the recent 60 Minutes segment last month.  Todd had much to say about the 60 Minutes Segment, especially the visuals they used.  Don’t miss it.  Listener Jane asked about the differences in policy ideas between NewSpace and the old space crowd, especially the very well known astronauts who are most vocal in support of a more traditional NASA program.  Todd had much to say about this and we talked about the future NASA as either a space tax service or an organization that explores BLEO.  Another topic of interest dealt with the Chinese space program and going to the Moon.  Our listener asked if Chinese space plans might start a space competition with theU.S.  We then talked about the FY 13 budget for NASA and the possibility of doubling NASA’s budget as proposed by Dr. Tyson.  As the segment ended, we discussed Planetary Resources and sought Todd’s perspective on what has been made public so far.

In the second segment, Todd went into detail about the Florida Today broadcast for the Falcon 9 launch.  Terry called in to ask about the ISS GPS issue and then we asked Todd to describe what happens when Dragon gets to the vicinity of the ISS.  The process goes on through Wednesday morning.  Another listener asked for Todd’s analysis of the space program over his 25 year history of reporting space news.  Our next topic honed in so the suborbital companies in Mojave, space tourism, and suborbital research.  This discussion included spaceports inFlorida,California,Virginia,New Mexico and elsewhere.  As our program was nearing its end, we talked about Constellation, Ares 1, SRBs, Dr. Mike Griffin, SLS, and civility.  In his closing comments, Todd again said we should have a space program that explores and is not a space taxi service.

We talked about the lack of civility in the space advocacy/enthusiast community as well as the Kool-Aid and lack of realism in some parts of the advocacy/enthusiast organizations.  This applied to space fans as well.  This discussion soon gave way to the SLS topic.  Our guest was supportive of it but got several listener questions stating why so many objected to it.  We talked about its lack of a mission but Wes did define its mission as a preliminary mission in that it was being built for beyond low Earth orbit (BLEO) with the rest to be decided later.  I asked our guests about the likelihood of it being built given the track record of NASA and Congress plus OMB in canceling these projects.  Wes then talked about the roles of Congress and OMB and our space budget. This brought us to our national spending and budget crisis and the space program in general  Other listeners phoned in and emailed us citing the NewSpace perspective on SLS. Don’t miss what Wes had to say about this.  Next, Space X came up as did the process of taking government money and how that might separate a new “commercial” company from other aerospace contractors.  Marshall called us about risk and demo flights, and then we got into a detailed discussion of thrust oscillation (TO) for the Ares 1.  We talked about some advocates making ATK into a villain and Space X and other new companies into saints.  I had much to say about ATK as being evil and Dr. Jurist called in to again tell what happened when he did real due diligence with ATK on the TO issue.  All three of us were very clear and definite in saying the attacks on ATK and other proven companies were unwarranted.  In our second long segment, Wes said we should not have retired the shuttle.  We talked about Mars missions and the origins of the MRI medical device.  Atlanta John called in to be supportive of SLS and its mission.  Jim sent in an email explaining why many are supportive of heavy lift but not supportive of SLS.  We talked about the lack of public awareness regarding space matters.  I then got off on one of my rants about the value of space which took us to STEM education.  We again returned to his theme that we in the advocacy/enthusiast community should be far more united.  When asked about individual organization goals such as the Moon, Mars, the frontier, etc, Wes clearly recommended we subordinate these interests to the overall good of speaking with a untied voice.  For his concluding Pearls of Wisdom, he cautioned us against being space groupies so to speak or running with the cyber pack.  We should avoid group think.  He said space was a team effort requiring all of us to be involved in supporting the team.  If you have questions/comments for Wes, please post them on the blog URL above.
