We welcomed our two guests, Steve Wolfe and Steven Gonzalez for an in-depth discussion on the upcoming Space Commerce Conference & Exposition which will be in Houston November 17-19, 2015. For more information, visit the conference website at www.spacecomexpo.com. During the first segment, Steve Wolfe described SpaceCom as this is an unusual type of conference or space event. Both Steve and Steven spent the majority of the first segment explaining just how unique and different this event is given it is a business to business out reach effort with five industries including medical, manufacturing, energy, communications, and transportation. The outreach is focused on showing these industries that there are new commercial opportunities coming out of today’s space industry, especially through the use of ISS commercial opportunities. Also on their website, you can find information relating to who should attend this event (www.spacecomexpo.com/Content/Who-Should-Attend/5_36 plus all essential event and hotel registration information. That said, our two guests discussed the event and its three days of programming in detail as each day of the conference offers a different structure and program. Listener questions were focused on the conference agenda and structure, plus there were several questions about space advocates attending the event, networking, the Exposition Hall and how that has been set up to facilitate networking opportunities, and more.

In the second segment, I asked about live streaming the conference or segments of it. For this year, the event will not be live streamed but there may be some segments posted on the website at a later date, especially the reports coming out of the second day workshop groups. In addition, we learned that the conference has a focus on STEAM/STEM, a topic we discussed at length during this segment. Later, a listener asked what their outcome expectations were for the event. This provided us with an interesting discussion with outcome and innovation evaluative mechanisms. Listeners asked specific questions about the launch industry, NewSpace entrepreneurial startups, and possible private space stations since the life of the ISS may be limited. Our guests told us the theme for this year’s event was “LEO and BELW.” Make sure you hear this part of our discussion. Near the end of the segment, Brandy wanted to know about changing commercial and NewSpace industry trends. Both guests offered us closing comments and unique take aways for this event.

We welcomed Joan Horvath and Rich Cameron to the show to discuss their new book, “The New Shop Class: Getting Started with 3D Printing, Arduino and Wearable Tech,” the importance of modern shop class training in our school systems, plus modern technology as a learning tool for students.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 42 minute program, Joan explained why they wrote this book, the problem caused by the absence of shop class in schools around the country and the void their book attempts to fill.  The book is targeted to both parents and teachers to assist them in being comfortable with the “new” shop class as the technology, the instruments & tools, and possibilities are totally different from the stereotype of a shop class from previous years.  Joan talked about their pilot project with the Windward School in Los Angeles (see www.windwardschool.org) including the upcoming two day seminar August 14-15,  Design and Maker Class Colloquium: Hands-on with Arduinos, 3D printing, Wearable tech (for details see www.windwardschool.org/design2015?rc=0).  The book is also appropriate for students starting around the 7th or 8th grade but the Foreword to the book was written by a 13 year old student, Coco, who called the show.  Coco was a most impressive caller who works this technology, has a keen interest in it, and I urge you to pay attention to her phone call.  Coco was with us for most of the first segment.  Additional topics discussed in the first segment included the use of Arduinos, STEM and STEAM, portable 3D printers, program funding, teacher and classroom issues. The portable Bukito 3D printer was discussed in some detail and even Coco told us how relatively easy it was to learn to use it.  A few listeners sent in notes asking about how to get a new type shop class started in the schools their kids attend.  Joan and Rich suggested starting small, work with kits, and use the open source world.  It was also suggested that people attend a local MakerFaire or visit a hacker space though the latter may be challenging for students under 18.  Jackie sent in a note asking about both wearable tech and implanted tech.  Rich had some interesting comments on this topic, don’t miss them.

In the second segment, Joan and Rich talked about actionable things by both parents and teachers.  Joan also talked about how students learn and the problems caused for some students when there is no shop class.  She also said there was some parental push back so don’t miss what she had to say about this.  Randy from Tucson emailed in a question about traditional vocational training including the subjects Joan and Rich were discussing.  Joan made a distinction with trade and vocational tech training and teaching young students in a modern school shop class.  Several questions came up for our guests about teacher acceptability of this type of program. Joan said that for teachers, time is a problem as they have to carve out more time to both learn and teach these subjects.  Also, if the teacher and the class are focused on teaching to the test, its an even bigger problem.  Near the end of our discussion, a listener asked about the software used in 3D printing. Our guests mentioned several programs, including freeware, that an interested listener might want to explore.  Prior to the show ending, our guests talked about their upcoming August colloquium per above and fielded one final question from BJohn regarding limitations.  Our guests suggested that in terms of limitations to the use, application, and results of working with this new technology, one’s imagination would likely be the biggest limiting factor.

We welcomed CAP Saucier to the program to discuss her new book, “Explore The Cosmos Like Neil deGrasse Tyson.”  For more information about our guest and her work, visit her website, www.capsaucier.com.  During the first segment of our 1 hour 27 minute program, CAP introduced us to her new book and how she met Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson plus her interviews with him for this book.  Note that this book was a five year project in the making.  I asked her for a few things that she thought stood out with Neil.  One was that he does not have role models. Instead, he has mentors.  We spent some time discussing this and the differences between the two.  Regarding his mentors, Sir Isaac Newton and his parents stood out and were a the top of the list.  During our discussion we went back and forth in talking about Dr. Tyson and the science message in her book which was targeted toward middle school students.  Listeners asked our questions about the level of our scientific knowledge and if Dr. Tyson commented on that.  He did comment and this proved to be a continuing topic throughout our program.  We talked about favorite parts of the book, Neil’s favorite planet and CAP being able to see Andromeda through a telescope at Kitt Peake. This is an interesting story, don’t miss it.  In response to another listener email, CAP said that Neil’s priority was defending against incoming asteroids.

 

In the second segment, we started off talking about science education in the U.S. Our guest said we ranked in the lower half in science education among educated countries. This led us to discussing STEM and the newer form, STEAM.  The “A” is added for Art.  We both talked about the importance of art in addition to the traditional STEM topic.  We talked about where we come from in the cosmos, supernovas, and science fact, all in the context of science fact.  Note the email question from Adrian on this subject.  I asked CAP if we needed to start with better science education in grade school but she said middle school was a good age, around 4th and 5th grade.  CAP introduced the topic of evolution and said it needs to be brought back to science education.  CAP the spoke to her literary style which has been to tell a story through a biography.  In both segments, the subject of the Next Generation Science Standards came up.  Our guest had much to say about them.  Check ou the website,  www.nextgenscience.org/next-generation-science-standards.  Toward the end of the show, listener Pauline in Fargo wanted to know if Neil wanted to go to space.  Don’t miss her answer.

We welcome you to this Space Show Webinar featuring a panel discussion on Space and STEM Education Outreach.  In addition to listening to this discussion as a regular audio Space Show program, you can view webinar video at http://vimeo.com/channels/thespaceshow.  Our panel members for this two hour 27 minute webinar presentation included Lynne Zielinski, Christine Nobbe, Barbara David, and Dr. John Jurist with myself as moderator.  Each panel member brought educational expertise to the discussion ranging from teaching in elementary school through the college graduate level plus Space Grant.  During the first hour of our webinar, each panel member made an opening statement as to why space and STEM education was important plus they shared a few highlights pertaining to their respective backgrounds & accomplishments.  As moderator, I asked panel members about science misconceptions and what they have found over time to best deal with issues at the appropriate grade level.  I also asked about funding issues given our panel of teachers referenced some highly effective and amazing student programs that they used over their respective teaching careers.  We talked not only about the programs, but also how to secure funding and for such programs since most funding now comes from outside the school district.  This was a most important discussion, also a very creative one so you will want to pay close attention to what our panel members have to say.  Several NASA and space organizations programs were identified in this segment.  Doug called near the end of the segment to inquire about conference attendee gender differences & how gender differences might show up in the early grades for space and STEM subjects and teachers.

In our longer second segment, our panel addressed budget issues relating to space and STEM education, and we talked about teaching to the BIG PICTRE plus ways to inspire the students.  Several methods were shared with our webinar audience but one thing for sure was the need to engage the students in the work, not to just lecture to them with their remaining passive listeners.  Cubesats, fieldtrips, competitions, and even video or digital training were all listed as effective ways of inspiring, stimulating and working with students in space, science, & other STEM subjects.  At times during the discussion, panel members cited specific things they had used so again, you will want to listen carefully and jot down these ideas & suggestions.  The use of toys, models, and props were discussed and as you will hear, several of our panel members maintained space & science toy collections for working with their students.  Everyone said teacher networking was important and this included workshops, conferences, and informal teacher events or brain storming sessions.  Later in the segment when I asked each member of our panel to counsel a new teacher on what works and does not work, we heard some terrific suggestions.  I then extended the question to lessons learned and not learned and again, our panel had much to say that can be helpful for us all.  At one point I asked if the teacher needed the subject interest & passion or if students or parents could drive the quality teaching/learning experience.  You might be surprised by what we heard from our panel members.  As our webinar was coming to a close, an 11th hour question came in regarding the impact of TV on students, then each panel member provided us with their respective concluding comments and “pearls of wisdom.”  Our panel members and I invite you to post not just your comments and questions on the blog but also any suggestions you have for teaching and inspiring students in the STEM and Space fields.  What have you found that works and does not work?  Let us know and you can tell us on The Space Show blog.
