Today’s Open Lines discussion covered lots of topics with a variety of callers in each segment.  During the first segment of the 2 hour 10 minute program, I started off with a clarification regarding the recent program with Dan Adamo and range safety issues for Brownsville, TX.  Michael Listner was our first caller.  He updated us on the AF-SpaceX litigation, then he spoke about the need to develop a US version of the RD-180 rocker motor. He referenced this Aviation Week article, http://aviationweek.com/space/engine-makers-pushing-am-other-technologies-rd-180-replacement.  I asked Michael for a Code of Conduct update and he also updated us on the Asteroid Bill proposed in the House.  Next, Doug called in to talk about his recent telecom presentation on his “Space Psychology: Space Settlers In Confined Quarters ” PPT on his Cislunarone.com site.  He presented a few slides to us, then I suggested he schedule a full Space Show for this discussion. You can download his Power Point at http://www.cislunarone.com/psychology.ppt.  Some of the issues Doug raised focused on childbirth & pregnancy, & child development in space.  This discussion prompted additional comments by others including a call from Marshall later in the second segment.

In the second segment, Kelly called to talk about the upcoming bid announcement for commercial crew re the NASA down select process. Kelly is working on Dream Chaser and had some interesting comments about Dream Chaser as well as the competition.  Kelly favored Boeing and SNC.  Doug emailed Kelly to ask about Dream Chaser for suborbital flight, then the topic of orbital servicing came up for Dream Chaser.  Gerry Williams from San Diego called us to talk about his Mars Movie Guide which you can find at http://marsmovieguide.com.  We talked about classic Mars sci-fi films as well as the newer Mars films. I asked him about the first ever Mars film which was a five minute 1910 film “A Trip To Mars” made by the Thomas Edison group. You can view this silent film at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=np7VImsSMQM.  I strongly suggest you take a look at it. Thanks to Gerry for bringing this and other information to our attention.  Our last caller was SLS John to  talk about the NASA down select process.  I got him to give us his prediction for the winners:  SpaceX & Dream Chaser.  John also opined on the RD-180 engine and then he questioned the possibility of a change in the speed of light given our recent program with Louise Riofrio.

Please post comments/questions on The Space Show blog.  You can reach any of the participants through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

We welcomed back to the show Louise Riofrio to discuss her new book, “The Speed of Light.”  Remember that if you order this book through Amazon to use the OGLF Amazon portal so Amazon will make a contribution to TSS.  Instructions are on both The Space Show and our blog’s websites.  For more information, visit Riofrio’ s blog at http://riofriospacetime.blogsot.com. During the first segment of our 91 minute program, Louise told us about new developments and her work since her first Space Show appearance on Oct. 27, 2008.  She told her about her science work and related travels at JSC and her work with the moon rocks.  She also explained how her work with the moon rocks was important to human spaceflight, especially a return lunar mission and an asteroid mission.  She talked about why a lunar return mission was so important for science & why it was better to have astronauts on the mission rather than only robotic.  Out of this discussion came another SLS discussion as Louise pointed out the need for heavy lift for a lunar or any BLEO mission.  I explored her thoughts and opinions on SLS, asking her about the perspectives provided by those not supporting SLS.  In my opinion, Louise put forth excellent arguments in support of SLS during the show.  I even suggested she become the spokesperson for SLS and lunar return missions given how well she articulated and explained the need for SLS.  Louise also spoke about the distance from Earth to the Moon and the lunar orbit, referencing the LLRE (The Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment) from the Apollo era.  She used information from this device in comparison with three other measuring methods to support her theory that the speed of light is slowing down.  Listen to her explanation behind her theory assumptions.  Louise then mentioned the very accurate atomic clock soon to go up to the ISS, ACES (see http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Human_Spaceflight/Human_Spaceflight_Research/Atomic_Clock_Ensemble_in_Space_ACES).  She said this would be very helpful in detecting and clarifying the change in the speed of light.  John from Ft. Worth called with several questions and comments about the speed of light.   Next, Paul asked a series of email questions about time travel.

In the second segment, we started off discussing time travel and speed of light changes for a multi-generational human mission.  Louise introduced us to time dilation.  John in Montana asked about GPS timing & the change in the speed of light.   Christine emailed a question about an RTM mission and asked what might change if the speed of light is slowing down.  Next, we talked about Planck units and the equation GM=TC^3 which is the same as M=R=t.  Peer review was discussed as were the challenges of getting new theories introduced into the literature.  As you will hear, old ideas do not go lightly into the dark, so to speak.  Louise then talked about having discovered a lunar orbit anomaly and referenced her paper, “Calculating a Lunar Orbit Anomaly” which you can download at http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2013/pdf/2436.pdf.  As the program neared its end, I asked our guest about her idea that there might be a mini black hole in our sun.  Louise told us about her theory & talked in general about mini black holes.  Our last subject dealt with her interest in positive pressure suits for IVA purposes.

If you have comments/questions, please post them on TSS blog. You can reach Louise through her blog or me.

Guest: Dave Reneke.  Topics:  Space in Australia, a different view of U.S. space policy, astronomy, SETI.  You are invited to comment, ask questions, and discuss the Space Show program/guest(s) on the Space Show blog, https://thespaceshow.wordpress.com.  Comments, questions, and any discussion must be relevant and applicable to Space Show programming. Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright. The Space Show/OGLF is now engaged in its annual fundraising drive. Please see & act upon our appeal at

https://thespaceshow.wordpress.com/2011/11/21/space-show-2011-fundraising-campaign.  We welcomed Dave Reneke to the program to discuss all space issues from the Australian perspective.  Find out more about Dave, his space and astronomy work, plus sign up for his free newsletter at www.davidreneke.com.  Starting out, I asked our guest about the Perth radio telescope used by ESA that seems to be the only location making some contact with the Russian Phobos-Grunt mission.  After talking about Perth and its geography, our guest mentioned the competition for the Square Kilometer Array Telescope (SKA) competition which has been narrowed down to the Australian location or a location in S. Africa.  Dave mentioned the SKA telescope and its capabilities throughout our discussion.  As we learned, the Perth area is actually quite quiet regarding radio noise and a good location for the radio telescope array.  Dave received email questions about the space awareness level of the average Australian as well as for his students.  Having been to the U.S. several times, our guest said that there was not much difference between Australians and Americans when it comes to space awareness and knowledge.  We also talked about commercial space, space tourism, and our current American space policy.  Josh asked about the difference in the night sky from the southern hemisphere view as compared to what most of us see here in the northern hemisphere.  Dave gave us some good comparison notes which I think you will find interesting, especially about the Southern Cross, some of the planets, the Big Dipper, Orion (the Swordsman in Australia), and even the Milky Way.  We talked about national television coverage in Australia of the recent MSL launch, and then some more about issues facing the U.S. space policy of today.  In our second segment, Dave got a listener question about Australian concern and coverage for space debris falling to Earth and he reminded us about Skylab coming down in Australia and told us some interesting stories about it.  I asked him about the Air Force UFO article on his website.  He had much to say about it and his previous work as a UFO investigator.  We then switched to talking about deep space, Pioneer 10, and SETI searches.  We mentioned the potential water planet discovery, Gliese 586g, and much more.  Dave was asked when the effects of our sun cease and a deep space mission starts having effects from a different solar system or from being in deep space.  Dave talked about a region of turbulence hitting Pioneer 10 and suggested deep space really starts when our solar system effects end. He referenced the heliosheath. We also talked about the Voyager Interstellar Mission.  Dave told us a few stories about Apollo 11 that he learned from his day long meeting with Buzz.  He concluded with a long term hundred year vision suggesting that eventually there will be travel beyond the speed of light with routine space travel.  Post your comments/questions on the blog URL above. Dave can be contacted through the Contacts page on his website.
