We welcomed back Dr. John Jurist to present his popular talk, “The Space Program of the 1960s.”  I have uploaded to The Space Show blog his Power Point presentation that he uses with this talk  so be sure to visit it.  He refers to many of the Power Point slides during this two hour Space Show program, especially slides featuring historical pictures.  The specific URL for this program on our blog is https://thespaceshow.wordpress.com/2015/10/24/dr-john-jurist-sunday-10-25-15.  During the first segment of our two hour program, Dr. Jurist discussed the origins of our space program going back to the 1920s with Robert Goddard and his rockets, and even earlier to Tsiolkovsky with the rocket equation.  John then advanced the story through WW2, V2 rockets, the development of the hydrogen bomb, the creation of the NSF, then on to Sputnik and the eventual launch the first American satellite.  During this overview, Dr. Jurist received many listener questions as well as questions from me so this is quite the comprehensive discussion.  John also pointed out the interest in space from the public which drove media coverage.  He referenced Walt Disney, von Braun’s popular work, sci fi films, & Colliers Magazine articles.  He mentioned several stand out events such as JFK’s Rice University speech, the Apollo 1 fire and then Apollo 7 which contained thousands of human spaceflight safety advancements and improvements and the testing of many of those advancements with the Apollo 7 flight.  A listener asked about nuclear propulsion and NERVA.  This resulted in a phone call from Dr. Dewar who continued the discussion with nuclear propulsion but advanced it to include the development cryogenic systems to support the H bomb and then these systems making their way to NASA.  John and Jim had much to say about the H bomb and space development connections so don’t miss this discussion.  By the way, Dr. Dewar is returning to The Space Show on Dec. 6.  John talked about the biomedical advancements in aviation that contributed to safer HSF. Here, he mentioned the work by Dr. John Paul Stapp and others, especially out of Holloman AFB in New Mexico.  Don’t miss this discussion or the relevant PPT slides.

In the second segment, John from Ft. Worth called to continue the discussion about the H-bomb and space connections, huge airplanes to deliver the large bombs and the later development of compact warheads which lead to the use of smaller missiles.  They also compared these advancements to the Soviet Union program of the day as the soviets used a different system for the bomb which resulted in it being smaller than the initial American weapons.  The two John’s continued talking about cryogenic development.  Dr. Jurist then advanced the discussion to the economic benefits of space development and how space has advanced the standard of living for everyone on the planet.  Some side discussion topics including space and former V.P. Spiro Agnew, space shuttles, Skylab, and bone metabolism resulting in the DEXA scan.  Dr. Doug called in to talk about baby boomers and the creation of graduate students in STEM and non-STEM fields.  He also asked if a DEXA scan could be made small enough to go to the ISS for real time measurements.  Dr. Jurist offered an easier way for those real time studies.  Several listeners asked Dr. Jurist if we could recreate this type of program today.  John said he was doubtful, especially given the IRB would likely have a total fit with self-experimentation.  He spent more time on the Apollo 1 fire, then he got questions about the opportunity cost of space development asking if we would not have had the same advancements if not more had we spent the money on programs other than space.  Don’t miss how John responded to this question.  Another listener pointed out emergency and trauma medical advancements as a result of recent wars and asked our guest if those advancements would have come about had it not been for the recent wars that helped develop these new treatment protocols.  Again, don’t miss how Dr. Jurist responded to this question.  As our program was ending, Dr. Jurist offered concluding comments that you will certainly want to hear and consider.

Welcome to this 2 hour 1 minute program.  In our first segment, we started with the first caller, Richard Easton who told us about the passing of his Dad, Roger Easton, the father of GPS.  Richard has been a guest on the show several times &we were most fortunate to have Roger as a guest as well several years ago.  We took this opportunity to honor Roger Easton & talk about the early days of Roger’s timing work which formed the backbone of GPS.  Richard went through some of the early history with us as he has done on previous shows. I urge you to listen to this call plus go back and listen to Richard’s earlier shows, including his first one when Roger was with him. You will hear oral history at its best & from the major scientist/engineer who brought us GPS.  After Richard’s call, we took our first break.

In the second segment, I read a NASA PR announcement about the successful recovery of Dragon bringing back 3,500 lbs. of cargo from the ISS.  Congratulations to SpaceX and NASA!.  John from Ft. Worth called to talk about the U.S. sanctions on Russia regarding the Crimea/Ukraine, the Atlas 5, the RD-180 engine and various straggles that might unfold for the ISS.  John was asking thought provoking questions which neither of us could answer but we do know the situation is largely political rhetoric and posturing right now but could easily change.  I asked John if he thought we might fast track the development of HSF and Dragon.  As he said, we wait and see.  Next, I took a very short break to return with my attempt to respond to the questions about Russia, the ISS, and sanctions asked by Kelly in his email which I read on air.  Our next caller was first time caller John from New Jersey who took us through to the end of the program.  John’s call was an excellent one & I urge you to listen to what he had to say.  We talked about the old shuttle policy, the possible use of depots, lunar settlement & using the Moon for training and experience to go further out in space.  We also talked about Mars and asteroid mission, then the issue of leadership came up regarding policy & in particular, space.  Like so many of us frustrated by our current situation, John was unable to find answers to how to advance policy.  I asked him if the militarization of space by another state actor might be a driver for the type of space activities we had been talking about.  He did not think so but listen to his answer.  One of his favorite comments  was to the effect that “we are having Star Trek dreams in a wagon train universe!”  Prior to ending our program, I went over our upcoming Space Show schedule.

We welcomed our two guests to this 1 hour 35 minute discussion of their new book on GPS, its history, workings, uses, and more.  Remember, if you buy this book through Amazon using the OGLF portal and instructions in our archives, on the blog, and on TSS website as well as OGLF’s website, Amazon will contribute to The Space Show.  If you need further instructions on how to do this, please let me know.  During  our first segment, Richard started out by telling us about the book and why he wrote it, then his meeting up with Eric to be his co-author.  We talked about the early programs that led to GPS including the TRANSIT satellite system (NAVSAT), Naval Research Lab, plus other early tracking systems. We talked about timation and we also talked about the GPS systems in other countries such as Russia, Europe, India, and China.  Eric explained why the book goes as far back as the Sputnik era and at times even earlier.  Doug called in to ask about higher resolution GPS that could for example tell you traffic lane information.  As you will hear, that capability is pretty much available now but the resolution and solutions depend on the GPS product one buys or that is a consumer product.  We also talked about jamming and spoofing regarding the military GPS systems.  Monroe called with questions about GPS Open Source and amateur rocketry, plus signal loss at high speed and 4 g’s or more.  Also in this segment, we talked about the consumer GPS voice wanting to know if it was a real woman’s voice or a computer simulation.

In the second segment, we talked more with Monroe and also about mapping issues as an overlay for the raw GPS data.  Barry called regarding GPS and automatic flight control systems, then we talked some more with our guests regarding the early days leading up to the development of GPS.  Toward the end, our guests mentioned the GPS contribution to our economic GNP! We also honored the 54th anniversary of Explorer 1.  Mr. Mellberg started the discussion with Explorer 1 by talking about the early history of Vanguard, Explorer 1, Werner Von Braun, Ernst Stuhlinger & more. Richard Easton called & we talked about timing, GPS, clock synchronization, his Dad’s work, and Vanguard early history.  Turning to our main topic, comparing the early days of aviation history to the commercial space industry today, our guest said it was a flawed comparison.  During the first segment, he explains in detail his reasoning which has to do with commercial markets, what the government is paying for regarding commercial space as compared to what it paid for with aviation, specifically the Kelly Air Mail Act of 1925.  We also talked about the early history of Fokker Aircraft Company which he tied into our discussion on markets, market timing, and production capabilities.  Mr. Mellberg addressed human spaceflight safety from the point of view that it would be extremely hard for the commercial companies to master safety given the complexities & costs of human spaceflight & the potential damage or even ruination of the company should there be a fatal accident.  Before the segment ended, our guest drove home the lack of commercial markets for human spaceflight.  There must be HSF markets other than the government market for the ISS.  

In our second segment, our guest cited some airplane examples that were ahead of the market and suffered from bad market timing.  He then used the SST as an example of the points he was making about high operating costs, no or limited markets, government subsidies, etc.  He went over the economics of why the Boeing SST was killed by our congress and what happens when the ticket price is so high that a broad market cannot be realized.  Listeners and callers asked about government regulation crippling innovation.  Bill then suggested the path to commercialization was with a program such a what Dr. Spudis and Dr. Lavoie have proposed in their paper “Using the resources of the Moon to create a permanent, cislunar space faring system” as well as on The Space Show. You can read their paper at www.spudislunarresources.com/Bibliography/p/102.pdf.  Bill said that eventually as cislunar economic develop evolves, so would commercial markets and opportunities.  He also recommended the NASA reorganization plan proposed last year by Dr. Harrison Schmitt. You can read his plan at www.spaceref.com/news/viewsr.html?pid=37176.  Our guest suggested that we should use the money being invested in commercial human spaceflight to do space exploration projects because commercial space today is an unnecessary diversion of scarce resources in a tight economy.  Throughout our discussion, he talked about government contracting and why it is different today, not commercial, and unlike what was done in early aviation and with airmail.  At the end of the program, our guest treated us to some of his political humor and impersonations per his program, “An Evening With The Presidents.”
