We welcomed Doug Messier back to the program.  During the first segment of our nearly two hour show, Doug started off by telling about his current multi-part series running this past week on www.paraboloicarc.com regarding Virgin Galactic and SpaceShipTwo.  Given the accident happened slightly more than a year ago, Doug put together a comprehensive series of articles on the accident, the pilots, the NTSB report, Virgin Galactic, Scaled and more.  This is a multi-part series you will want to read.  The majority of the first segment’s discussion was based on the articles with questions from listeners and myself about various aspects of the company, the accident, the people involved, the mission control room, and the NTSB report plus supporting documents which Doug studied for his articles.  Listener Alec sent in an email before the show wanting to know if SS2 has been more closely modeled after SS! if the company would have been flying by now.  Doug had much to say in response to this question dealing with the expansion to SS2 which was 3 times larger than SS1 and more.  When asked about return to flight, Doug suggested the possibility of Feb. 2016 but that was not definite.  This was in response to Josh asking for a Virgin time line.  Doug also got questions about Virgin and Spaceport America, then he was asked if noticed differences in Virgin’s presentation both pre and post the accident.  The subject of safety and test flight programs came up for Virgin, XCOR and all the companies.  We talked about safety and test flight programs in general with Doug, myself and some listeners,  agreeing that the test programs were not extensive enough or sufficiently comprehensive.  Don’t miss this discussion which included comments about the flight test envelope challenges, the X-15 as a possible model, and comments made by Neil Armstrong at the recent Suborbital Conference held a few years ago in Palo Alto, CA.

In the second segment, I started out by asking Doug about the new Commercial Space Law agreed upon by the House and Senate, specifically the part about asteroid mining and quasi-property rights.  I pointed out the feedback I was getting about this section being in opposition to the Outer Space Treat and many were not happy with it, nor did we know if it would have any legal standing outside the U.S.  Tim called in to support the asteroid mining provisions in the law.  John from Ft. Worth called in to talk about the DARPA XS-1 program and Masten Space Sciences. Burton in Canada asked about SLS, then Dr. Lurio called in to talk safety and many other topics.  Before the show ended, Tim called back to ask about the XCOR piston pump progress.

We welcomed back long time NBC space news reporter Jay Barbree to the show to discuss his new book, “Neil Armstrong: A Life of Flight.  Our program made use of the 60 minute format and one segment. We welcomed Jay to the show but as you will hear, there was a technical glitch as we started so you will hear the program being restarted.  No program time was lost.  Jay started by sharing with us the timeline he worked on for this book which spanned several decades.  He also set the stage by detailing his special relationship with Armstrong that made it possible for him to write this type of book.  He started Chapter 1 with the story of Neil ejecting from his fighter jet during the Korean War.  As you will hear, Neil was one of the early pilots ejecting from a jet fighter.  He flew into an anti-aircraft wire stretched between two mountains and it removed part of his plane.  He was unable to make it back to the Essex but he did manage to keep the plane in flight and when he ejected, he was over a Marine base.  Jay talked extensively about Neil seeing himself as a research test pilot and he referenced the old NACA plus his efforts that eventually paid off to get a test pilot assignment at Edwards AFB to fly at Dryden which has since been renamed after Neil Armstrong.  Jay talked about one X-15 flight where he overshot the landing.  The flight being described, the Pasadena Over flight, demonstrated Neil’s skills and expertise as a test pilot.  Jay talked about how Neil always wanted to go to space, plus his teaching career later in life.  A listener asked Jay about Neil and the Apollo 11 crew.  Jay had much to say on this subject, & why the specific Apollo 11 crew members were selected by Neil and Deke Slayton.  He also talked about the facts of Neil being the first to walk on the Moon, the conspiracy theory about their not being photos of Neil on the Moon because Buzz would not take any and much more.  Another listener wanted to know why Neil became far more public after the Columbia accident.  In his response to this question, Jay talked about Neil not liking the press and wanting to keep his privacy.  In the book, Jay Barbree referred to Armstrong, Collins, and Aldrin as the misfits.  Don’t miss this great discussion.  Later, another listener wanted to know about Neil’s objections to cancelling the Constellation Return to The Moon program.  Jay went into some detail on this subject, including commenting on commercial space, SpaceX and more.  One thing he pointed out as did Neil and other astronauts was that what SpaceX and the new commercial industry was accomplishing, as outstanding as it was, is, and will be, was already done back in the day with our early space program, especially with Apollo.  As part of this discussion, Jay spoke about the SLS and NASA budgets, suggesting more money for NASA was not needed, but they needed to be more effective and efficient with how they spend their annual $18 billion plus.  He talked about consolidation, wastes at the centers and he told the LBJ story about the president’s insistence on locating Mission Control in Houston.  As our discussion was drawing to a close, Jay talked about Neil’s concept for incremental exploration which started out by going no further from Earth than three days with a 3 day return and no further out than a three second communication delay.  Once we mastered that, we go to the next goal and this way we incrementally explore space as we develop the ability to do so.  As the program ended and since Jay talked about getting old and his age throughout the show, I asked him if he planned to send his ashes to space upon his death.  Don’t miss his answer and our program’s conclusion.

We welcomed back Michelle Evans, author of the best selling book, “The X-15 Rocket Plane, Flying the First Wins into Space.”  During the first segment of our 1 hour 28 minute program, Michelle started off talking about the May, 18, 2014 Michael Adams re-dedication memorial event.  You can see pictures from this event and understand the crash site and location better by viewing the pictures Michelle took and posted. See http://www.mach25media.com/adams.html.  In fact, I strongly urge you to explore her full website, http://www.mach25media.com as it has the best ever collection of X-15 photos plus other aviation and related material, her presentations on the X-15 and collections from her modeling photography.  Michelle took us through the history of the X-15 program and Major Mike Adams up to and including his last and fatal flight.  This was the only fatality in the X-15 program which had 199 flights!  During this segment, we talked about other X-15 pilots including the very recent passing of pilot Bill Dana.  Note the history of the Mike Adams Memorial which had its genesis in a project by Eagle Scout candidate John Bodylski in 2004.  Listeners and I asked Michelle about the X-15, the B-52 carrier planes and the location of X-15 historical craft and related hardware.  B-52 008 which was one of the carrier planes for X-15 is parked outside Edwards AFB while B-52 003 is at the Pima Air Museum in Tucson.  The remaining X-15 rocket planes are at Wright Patterson Air Museum and the Smithsonian.  Michelle also spoke about the two nearby towns to the Mike Adams Memorial, Randsburg and Ridgecrest.

In the second segment, Michelle noted that the remaining X-15 pilot Joe Engle was invited to the re-dedication but his schedule did not allow it.  However, you will find the Joe Engle letter about the re-dedication on Michelle’s website per the above URL.  Michelle was asked if the X-15 was really a precursor for our space program and she said not so much for Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo but definitely for the Space Shuttle, helping to prove the fact that the shuttle could do a power free glide back to Earth and a safe landing.  After talking about several dry lake emergency X-15 landing sites, Paul emailed in a question about Chuck Yeager and the X-15.  Michelle had much to say about Chuck and the X-15 but as you will hear on the recording, there was lots of scratchy noise and a good part of our discussion on Yeager was lost.  I saved as much as I could be saved but about 10 minutes was lost out of the full second segment.  In troubleshooting the problem during and after the show, I discovered loose connectors that acted up with the feed going to the computers that record the show.  The problem has now been fixed but we did suffer some audio loss during this segment of our program.  My apologies to Michelle and The Space Show audience for this problem, the scratchy noise, and subsequent audio loss.  Back to Chuck Yeager, as you will hear Michelle say, he was never part of the X-15 program.  Michelle did go into the reasons why this was so.  We also spoke about other leading and role model astronauts including Wally Schirra and Buzz Aldrin.  Near the end of our discussion, I asked Michelle what was next for her after X-15 and she let us know there was still much life left to her work with the X-15.  In fact, we learned that her book will soon be an audio book.  While she did not know who would be reading it, she did talk about her process in sending the audio publisher a pronunciation guide for the audio version.

We welcomed Dr. James Hansen to the program to discuss his book, the only officially approved biography of Neil Armstrong, “First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong,” on the one year anniversary of Neil’s death.  Dr. Hansen also wrote an op-ed for Space.com which you will find interesting (www.space.com/22510-neil-armstrong-astronaut-icon-remembered.html).  During this one hour 25 minute program, Dr. Hansen had much to say about Neil Armstrong starting with his days as a 21 year old Naval aviator in the Korean War.  In fact, he told us a Korean War story about Neil flying his jet and coming upon North Korean troops exercising.  We also learned that Neil favored aviation over space flight and Dr. Hansen spoke with us as to  why this was so.  Our guest received lots of questions about the Apollo 11 crew, personalities of all the crew members and how the crew interacted with one another on mission work and in their personal lives. He also described Armstrong as being modest and a bit “Garbo-like.”  Listen to his explanation of why he thought that was so.  Dr. Hansen got questions about Neil as a university professor and what his students thought of him, plus did the students pester him about the Moon landing given how modest Armstrong was about the Apollo 11 landing and his accomplishments in general.  We also talked about his role in the Augustine Commission and his perspective about the need to go back to the Moon and to avoid a gap in U.S. human spaceflight capability.

In our second segment, I asked Dr. Hansen to elaborate on the Clint Eastwood effort to do a Neil Armstrong movie.  Dr. Hansen related a good Clint Eastwood and Neil Armstrong golf story to us which you will enjoy.  Our guest was asked about Neil’s role in both the Challenger and the Columbia accidents.  As we learned, Neil turned down an opportunity to be part of the Columbia accident board but he did serve on the Challenger board and Dr. Hansen had much to say about that.   We then spoke about preserving the Apollo landing sites as historical sites, then our guest was asked if the Apollo 11 crew traits discussed earlier in the show were the traits needed for the first HSF to Mars.  Agin, Dr. Hansen had much to say on this issue so don’t miss his comments.  Toward the end, Dr. Hansen spoke about the fact that there were no photos taken of Neil on the Moon as all the photos are of Buzz.  The official line at the time was that such photos were not in the mission plan.  He also told us a never before heard story regarding Jim Lovell & crew selection for the Moon landing.  Dr. Hansen had much to say about these incidents so don’t miss his comments.

Transcripts of Space Show programs are not permitted without prior written consent from The Space Show (even if for personal use) & are a violation of the Space Show copyright.  We welcomed back Dr. Alan Stern to discuss a new kind of business venture, Uwingu (see www.uwingu.com).  During our first segment, Dr. Stern fully explained this new venture and showed why it was like no other.  We also talked about the start-up funding campaign on Indiegogo (www.indiegogo.com/projects/180221?c=home).  For the record, I became a supporter of Uwingu after our program.  I found the Indiegogo process to be especially simple, clear, easy, and quick.  I do recommend you support Uwingu because it does represent a completely different funding model for space ventures, college education, programs such as The Space Show, research proposals, and more.  As you will hear, Uwingu will sell space related products off their website (to be announced later), and the proceeds go to the Uwingu Fund to be used to give out awards based on review, due diligence, and in some cases, peer review.  Alan explained this process in our first segment and in parts of our second segment.

In our second segment, we asked Alan for updates to the New Horizons Mission on its way to Pluto. We learned about important New Horizon events coming up in 2013, including a full rehearsal of the mission prior to its arrival at Pluto.  I asked Alan about the Pluto postage stamp campaign and learned that it is now before the U.S. Post Office for consideration.  Alan talked about other projects he is working on, including the suborbital research flight projects with the Southwest Research Institute.  These projects include his being the PI of the LAMP instrument on NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission, which launched in 2009, and the PI for ALICE on ESA’s ROSETTA Mission.  Going back to Uwingu, Dr. Stern was asked about ITAR issues, the social media contacts for Uwingu, and then he was asked about other questions pertaining to the Kuiper Belt objects, .  As the program ended, Alan talked about the upcoming Next Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference, June 3-5, 2012 in Broomfield, Colorado.  For full information about this conference, visit http://nsrc.swri.org.
